Carole King's Joyous 'Beautiful' Is Voice of Generation
Carole King’s Joyous ‘Beautiful’ Is Voice of Generation
s
By Lynn Venhaus Managing Editor Legendary singer-songwriter Carole King’s joyous and wistful music is the sound of a generation and her remarkable life story parallels the evolution of women in the 1960s and 1970s.
How she found her voice is chronicled in the wildly popular long-running show, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” now on tour at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis for a limited…

Okay so this is gonna be a long post because I have a lot of feelings about a lot of things rn. ~First of all the set is like so pretty and the colors literally transport you back in time, it’s a gloriously crafted and we’ll blended set/lighting design. So well done. I loved it. ~Second, this is a show that for me, was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. They immediately break the fourth wall and I was constantly aware that I was intruding on these peoples lives. I’m typically so engrossed in a show that I forget I’m sitting in a theatre, but something about this show was different and I loved it. ~I got the tour shirt, which my mom bought me b/c she also wanted a coffee cup. ~As we were walking in the theatre attendant pointed out my Newsies bag but I had to inform her that I did not get a chance to see it live because *someone* didn't want to go. Okay onward and forward! ~Carol King man. Sarah Bockel absolutely nailed that role. I heard several ladies saying they liked her more than Jessie Mueller and IDK about that, but she definitely nailed every single piece of that performance. She’s not in the Playbill? She may have just joined the cast but her pic/description was inserted with a slip. ~Liam Tobin needs to just stop, because I’m not a fan of Gerry and so he needs to stop being so damn smooth all the time. Hate to love him I guess. ~Erika Olson, who is pretty new to the professional scene was just too good for me to comprehend. Absolutely beautiful voice and wonderful stage presence. ~I could not gush enough about this ensemble. The ensemble is a really important part to the show b/c the play like Little Eva, Janelle Woods, Marilyn Wald, the Shirelles, and the Drifters. So like these super iconic people, singing iconic songs and they have a lot to live up too, and the really hit it out of the part. When the Drifters showed up to sing Some Kind of Wonderful, I nearly had a heart attack because they were so good. I would love to hut each and everyone of them. ~The costumes were really awesome. Especially this one coat that Barry Mann wears that made my sister how with laughter. Also the dresses were so pretty. I want them all. Especially Cynthia’s. ~The guy in front of me was really tall, so I spent the show leaned on my sister and we held hands and got really hype whenever Ben was on stage. ~The orchestra was phenomenal. My sister and I ran up to thank them after the show because they were so amazing. Love the orchestra people. They deserve it. ~I love so many of the songs and how they do the songs is really fun but by far my favorite to hear live was We Gotta Get Out of This Place. On Broadway had me feeling some kind of way as well. ~Ben. Fankhauser. Oh. My. God. I have no ability to explain how blessed I feel to have gotten the opportunity to see him live and in person. I can’t believe he was literally right there. I have so much to say about Ben, and Barry in general (who is my second favorite character, I mean Carol King guys). First off: I didn’t get to meet him, the cast didn't do the TalkBack tonight for some reason. The lady didn't actually say why but fate is fate I guess, and the theatre this show is at doesn’t have actual stage dooring so like this lady was like “wait here and hope for the best” we saw him walking across the street and he turn the opposite direction and we sadly stood there as he walked away. He was wearing a rather dapper sweater, just fyi. But you know what? I heard Ben Fankhauser riff in person and I have been cured of all ailments. So for those of you who don’t know much about Barry(Ben’s character, and a blessing to this Earth) he’s a hypocondriac, ladies man, song writer, who married Cynthia Weil, and wrote a lot of freaking fantastic songs. This character fits Ben super well. I don’t really know how to describe it, but like Ben is really good at being a character. Like Barry is slightly over the top, and is often the comic relief in the scene without being labeled as so. He has a lot of really good one liners and Ben nailed each one. You know how Ben just manages to take a line and make it stand out even though it normally wouldn't? Idk how to explain it but I'm now in love with Barry Mann so thanks Ben. I can’t even begin to describe how well Ben fits the character. I was just in love from start to finish. Also I have been blessed with the Fankhauser Piano Playing. Holy bless. I audio recorded it, so if it's any good I might post some Ben snippets when I get the time. During curtain call my sister and I screamed like hell when Ben did his bow and he looked towards where we were sitting (there is no way he could see us thanks to the giant in front of me) but them we screamed "Size the day Ben!" And waved frantically. I'm going to believe he was us and yeah. He also did the little Broadway Cares speech at the end and I feel blessed that Ben Fankhauser spoke directly towards and audience I was a part of. Every time he sung it was like butter. Every worry I've ever had melted away upon hearing his harmonies in Walking in the Rain. He was ridiculously in sync with the orchestra. I could feel it in my soul. Who Put The Bomp was much too short. That song brings back a lot of memories for me and hearing Ben sing it was ridiculous! We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is my favorite song. Ben with a guitar was all I needed in my life, and it was a different type of song than I'm used to hearing him sing so that was great. I've been excited about that one since I got tickets. ~And @pontmarius the nose is indeed as beautiful in real life as it is in your dreams. Even more so, actually. Barry Mann wishes he was a smooth as Ben Fankhauser's nose. (And Barry Mann is pretty smooth tbh) All-in-all I'm glad I pulled an all-nighter the other night, or this never would have happened. I'm so blessed and super thankful that I got to see this show. It's incredible, please see it if you can. I can't believe I just saw Ben Fankhauser in real life.

11 Plays and Musicals to Go to in N.Y.C. This Weekend
Our guide to plays and musicals coming to New York stages and a few last-chance picks of shows that are about to close. Our reviews of open shows are at nytimes.com/reviews/theater.
Previews & Openings
‘AMERICAN UTOPIA’ at the Hudson Theater (in previews; opens on Oct. 20). Heaven, David Byrne once sang, is a place where nothing happens. But Broadway is not. And it is hosting the latest theatrical experiment from Byrne (“Here Lies Love,” “Joan of Arc: Into the Fire”). Byrne and 11 barefoot collaborators sing and discuss music and justice. Annie-B Parson does the choreography. 855-801-5876, americanutopiabroadway.com
‘BELLA BELLA’ at City Center Stage I (in previews; opens on Oct. 22). Bella Abzug, the radical lawyer and politician, had a signature style — jaunty hats, vibrant blouses, the occasional strand of pearls. Harvey Fierstein might not dress the same (well, he may don a hat), but he will channel her spirit in his affectionate tribute to Battling Bella, set at the close of a hard-fought senate campaign. Kimberly Senior directs. 212-581-1212, nycitycenter.org
‘DR. RIDE’S AMERICAN BEACH HOUSE’ at Ars Nova at Greenwich House (previews start on Oct. 21; opens on Nov. 5). Blasting into space, doable. Navigating gender and sexuality on Earth, harder. Liza Birkenmeier’s play, set in 1983, invites itself over as four friends (Susan Blommaert, Marga Gomez, Erin Markey and Kristen Sieh) enjoy a rooftop party the night before Sally Ride’s spaceflight. Katie Brook directs for Ars Nova. arsnovanyc.com
‘FIRES IN THE MIRROR’ at the Pershing Square Signature Center (previews start on Oct. 22; opens on Nov. 11). Anna Deavere Smith’s astounding excavation of civil unrest in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, returns to the stage, starring Michael Benjamin Washington and directed by Saheem Ali. Reviewing the play’s premiere in 1992, Frank Rich called it “quite simply, the most compelling and sophisticated view of urban racial and class conflict, up to date to this week, that one could hope to encounter.” 212-244-7529, signaturetheatre.org
‘FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE/WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF’ at the Public Theater (in previews; opens on Oct. 22). Ntozake Shange’s epoch-defining choreopoem, which premiered at the Public Theater in 1976, reappears this month. Okwui Okpokwasili and Adrienne C. Moore are among the actresses unpacking their lives and hearts. Leah C. Gardiner directs, with choreography by Camille A. Brown. 212-967-7555, publictheater.org
‘IS THIS A ROOM’ at the Vineyard Theater (in previews; opens on Oct. 21). Is this a play? This Half Straddle drama, which had a celebrated run at the Kitchen in the winter, returns. The text is drawn, verbatim, from the transcription of an interview that F.B.I. agents conducted with Reality Winner (played by Emily Davis), an intelligence specialist who leaked evidence of election tampering by the Russians. 212-353-0303, vineyardtheatre.org
‘POWER STRIP’ at the Claire Tow Theater (in previews; opens on Oct. 21). A play that doesn’t protect from surges, this drama by Sylvia Khoury, set in the recent past, centers on Yasmin (Dina Shihabi), a young woman, originally from Syria, in a Greek refugee camp fighting for autonomy and amperes. Tyne Rafaeli directs for LCT3, with Peter Ganim, Darius Homayoun and Ali Lopez-Sohaili. 212-239-6200, lct3.org
[Read about the events that our other critics have chosen for the week ahead.]
‘SCOTLAND, PA’ at the Laura Pels Theater at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theater (in previews; opens on Oct. 23). Is this a musical you see before you? Yes. The playwright Michael Mitnick and the composer Adam Gwon adapt Billy Morrissette’s cult 2001 film, which resets Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in a fast-food franchise. Ryan McCartan plays Mac, Taylor Iman Jones is his ambitious wife, and Lonny Price directs. 212-719-1300, roundabouttheatre.org
‘A WOMAN OF THE WORLD’ at 59E59 Theaters (previews start on Oct. 24; opens on Oct. 30). When death kindly stopped for Emily Dickinson, the task of editing of her poems fell to the writer and editor Mabel Loomis Todd. In this new play from Rebecca Gilman, directed by Valentina Fratti for the Acting Company and starring the perpetually radiant Kathleen Chalfant, Loomis Todd, late in life, invites audiences to her Maine home. 646-892-7999, 59e59.org
Last Chance
‘BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL’ at the Stephen Sondheim Theater (closes on Oct. 27). Before it’s too late, baby, you can see this 2014 musical, which is ending its Broadway run. The show follows Carole King, now played by Sarah Bockel, from her teen mom days as a breakout Brill Building songwriter to her post-divorce triumph. Ben Brantley called it a “friendly, formulaic bio-musical.” 212-239-6200, beautifulonbroadway.com
‘VICTOR’ at Axis Theater (closes on Oct. 26). Edgar Oliver’s new solo show, a chronicle of his friendship and love affair with a homeless man, closes its doors. According to Ben Brantley, Oliver is “a sui generis bard of urban solitude,” who conjures an East Village “as cozy as Sherwood Anderson’s ‘Winesburg, Ohio,’ and as otherworldly as a fairy-tale forest from the Brothers Grimm.” 866-811-4111, axiscompany.org

Former Muny Executive Director Paul Blake and Associate Producer Mike Bosner Left St. Louis for New York and Have a Tony-winning Show still running on Broadway
By Lynn Venhaus Managing Editor After Paul Blake listed “Carole King Musical” on a Muny survey one summer and it received only a few votes, he worried if the in-the-works “Beautiful” would draw an audience. His fretting was all for…
