Another Damn Murder Mystery, Part 3: ...
I can’t do this anymore. I’ve tried so hard to keep my head down, to not make trouble, to make my sire proud of me. All I want is to be left alone with my family and my art. But no matter what I do things keep going wrong, and when I try to fix them I just make them worse…
At least Sarah is safe. I saw her off on a train a few nights ago. I made her a budget for the new life she’s starting, and if she sticks to it she should be okay. I even managed to hang out with her for a bit. She and Ares and I had a night in, playing board games and watching terrible movies. She introduced Ares and I to this one called “The Room,” and it was so hilariously bad I almost forgot how terrible my life is. Part of me wishes I’d gone with her. In the end there was nothing I could do for Caroline. She was convicted of Hooper’s murder and sentenced to a century of forced wassail, locked in a secluded cell in the basement of Elysium. And it was all my fault! I’m the one who said we should tell Bethany what happened, before we got even further in over our heads. And if it weren’t for some last minute intervention from the Tremere then Michella would be locked in that cell too. God, I was stupid. I thought if we came clean about the murder, especially given how Caroline wasn’t even herself when she did it, then we’d be able to save her. I should have known better than to trust any of the people who run this city. Even Bethany, who’s actually reasonable, can’t do much when all her peers are rotten.
Bethany says saying those things counts as treason, but honestly I stopped caring about the Camarilla when Maxwell called that blood hunt on me. He doesn’t care about the truth, or due diligence, or anything like that. Passing judgement on Amelia, myself, Xavier, and now Caroline, all of it was done without verifying evidence, or any using any effort to try and look past his own preconceptions. At Caroline’s trial he straight up admitted he didn’t care if there were any extenuating circumstances. If it weren’t for Isaac and Michella I’d give up on this city entirely. But I can’t leave them, especially now that Michella and I are the only ones left of our coterie. Michella needs me. I’m not going to abandon her.
Given that Michella and I are the only ones who really care about the truth of what happened to Caroline, I’ll write it down one more time so it won’t get lost forever: According to Michella’s sire, Caroline most likely did feed on a werewolf. After she woke up in that parking garage her disciplines starting working above and beyond what they normally do, and her blood was buffing her strength without her actually telling it to do so. She’d been having nightmares as well. I remember reading one of my grandsire’s books and seeing that Gangrel used to hunt wolves who were on the cusp of transforming for the first time, specifically for that power boost. But if they didn’t know what they were doing, or weren’t strong enough to contain it, it’d result in a frenzy so powerful the conscious mind of the kindred wouldn’t be aware of anything. That was what Caroline went through. Her beast was mad with rage and lashed out at the first thing she saw: Hooper.
In short, the entire situation was the result of a miserable coincidence. There was no way Caroline could have known what she was biting, and had it not been for that... well I’d call the whole thing an accident before I called it murder. But the long and short of it is that Caroline’s gone. Not forever, but who knows what person will come out of that cell in a hundred years’ time? I tried looking into other scenarios, like someone setting Caroline up. It turns out that Hooper and Sash were trying to switch coteries; they’d been working for a gangrel named Cicero and wanted to leave, so I thought perhaps he’d retaliated against them and used Caroline as a patsy. I went to talk to the man Hooper had been trying to defect to, a ventrue named Saul, but in the end he couldn’t help me. He offered to forge evidence for us, but he wanted us to work for him in return, and I’m not going to swear myself to anyone at this point. Especially not this guy. He said he wanted the entire coterie in his pocket, but his real interest seems to lie in me, and it is… distressingly sexual. He’s also the one who sent the creepy guy to tail Ricardo.
Christ, why did I even bother? I can’t help anyone without sending the entire situation to hell. How many lives has my presence ruined? Or ended? Gary, Wretchid, Xavier, Caroline… Oh, and Charlotte too. I thought I could protect her by keeping her ghouled after Xavier’s death, but it just made her blood addiction worse. So now I have to deal with that too.
And lastly, as if all of this wasn’t enough, Bethany’s ordered me to break up with Ares. I told her he helped try to find out what happened to Caroline and she said enough was enough. Apparently that’s too close to breaking the Camarilla/Giovanni treaty for her liking. Christ, I am sick of these politics! As I said before, the Camarilla really isn’t making a strong case for itself at this point. But what would my other options be? Running away with Ares and relying on the Giovanni for protection? Even I’m not that stupid. I am going to start limiting my time with Ares until the fallout surrounding Caroline blows over, but it’s not for Bethany’s sake or anyone else’s. It’s just to keep Ares and me safe. If no one thinks we’re together then no one will harass us about it. There’s so much more that I should write down, but what does it matter? I’m done. If anyone needs me they can find me in my studio. But they’d better have a damn good reason.

The Mandalorian: Giancarlo Esposito Playing Ex-Imperial Moff Gideon
Tumblr media
New details have emerged regarding The Mandalorian and Giancarlo Esposito's mysterious character. Set five years after the destruction of the second Death Star and the fall of The Empire, the series will mark Disney's first foray into a live-action Star Wars television show since purchasing Lucasfilm. It will also be one of the flagship offerings of their new Disney+ streaming service, with the first episode premiering on the day of the service's launch. With the first season comprised of eight episodes, a new one will subsequently be released on a weekly basis rather than a traditional binge-model demonstrated by Netflix.
Game of Thrones' Pedro Pascal will play the titular character, who will forge a career as a notorious bounty hunter on the increasingly lawless outer planets. Alongside him, the show will star Gina Carano as Cara Dune, a former Rebel Shock Trooper-turned-mercenary, and Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, the leader of a bounty hunter guild. The episodes will also feature appearances Werner Herzog, Bill Burr, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D's Ming-Na Wen, and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi as the voice of droid IG-11. Run by the MCU's Jon Favreau in collaboration with Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni, the first official trailer for The Mandalorian was released at D23.

During an exclusive set visit, EW was able to glean even more new details about this new corner of the universe. That was especially true of the wholly original characters that will occupy said world and around which the story will revolve. Previously described as having the potential to be a gangster or a savior, the outlet has reported that Esposito will play Moff Gideon. As the title of Moff suggests, Gideon was formerly a governor within the Galactic Empire originally established by Emperor Palpatine. In the wake of the Rebel's decisive victory, the character will have experienced the collapse of his world. Personally discussing the character, Esposito had this to say:
"He’s an Imperial remnant of a very fine officer who then switches to become sort of the guardian of the people. But what does [Moff Gideon] really want? This guy is going to be a big player because he has an idea of how to keep order."
Tumblr media
Although the Italian-American actor has worked steadily for over three decades, he came to widespread prominence for his critically-acclaimed turn as Gus Fring on Breaking Bad. He would later reprise the role on the prequel, Better Call Saul. Given the character's ultimate fate on the former, however, he's unlikely to make an appearance on the upcoming Jesse Pinkman-centric movie, El Camino. Instead, Esposito most recently appeared on Amazon's new hit show, The Boys.
With the Skywalker Saga set to officially conclude with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December, a lot is riding on the show to keep the Galaxy Far, Far Away in the public consciousness and justify the expense of a new streaming platform. Disney and Lucasfilm evidently have a lot of faith in the series, however, with The Mandalorian season 2 already moving forward. Esposito's comments will no doubt add to fans' advanced belief in the show - especially regarding the potential avenues the story could go. His use of the word "order" could be especially curious, given the fact it's now confirmed that the show will explore the origins of The First Order. Thankfully, fans won't have to wait too long to find out.

Never have streaming services seemed more crucial to our collective consciousness than right now. In these uncertain times, we’re all looking for a way to escape, whether it’s through home workouts, baking, or something a little more thrilling.
Thankfully Aussie legend Stan has the goods with a slew of brand new thriller releases. So dim the lights, grab a bowl of movie-grade popcorn and get ready to stay in, sit back and enjoy.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels
What: A spiritual descendent of the original Penny Dreadful story, the brand new series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is a twisting, supernatural crime caper set in 1938 Los Angeles – a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.
When a grisly murder shocks the city of Los Angeles, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zavatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) find themselves embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before too long Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.
Why should you watch it? If the action-packed trailer alone, with its sinister lighting, old-school gangster guns, grizzled but dreamy detectives, explosions, horror, occult references and supernatural undertones isn’t enough to convince you, then consider this: one of the TWO major battles the show is built around sees Magda (Natalie Dormer) face off against the literal personification of death Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo) who just so happens to be her sister! It’s the demonic family feud we’ve all been waiting for, and the city of sinners is the perfect place for it to go down.
If Penny Dreadful: City of Angels was a band it would be:  Slipknot (there’s a LOT going on and it’s ALL awesome)
When to watch: Right now, right here.
The Gloaming
What: A powerful and provocative crime thriller set against the surreal landscapes of Tasmania, and from The Kettering Incident creator Vicki Madden, the Stan Original Series The Gloaming is a crime TV masterpiece not to be missed. When an unidentified woman is found brutally murdered, Detective Molly McGee (Emma Booth) uncovers chilling evidence that links the body to an unsolved crime from over two decades ago. Driven to finally get both the truth and justice, Molly teams up with ex-partner and old-flame Alex O’Connell (Ewen Leslie), only to be thrown headfirst into a murder mystery that rapidly goes from routine investigation to something much more insidious. As political corruption and shady business intertwine with sinister crimes and occult practices, The Gloaming becomes a genuinely unsettling puzzle.
Why should you watch it? If the above paragraph wasn’t enough to convince you, consider this: self-isolation has likely taken your brain to some strange and dark places this month, but none of them will be as deeply disturbing, unsettling and unexpected as the events depicted in The Gloaming. This is the type of murder mystery that will keep you awake until you’ve binged it all in one day, and the pay-off is absolutely worth it. It also scores bonus points for a stellar cast, the gorgeously ominous fog-covered Tasmanian scenery and the episode titles, which are all amazing (eg. The Mark of the Witch).
If The Gloaming was a band it would be: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
When to watch: This one is perfect for when you want to escape into the great outdoors (and not just for some essential exercise). Every episode of this Stan Original Series dropped as part of the platform’s massive summer line up, so you can jump right in.
Better Call Saul
What: Joining the universe of Breaking Bad, one of television’s most critically acclaimed shows, Better Call Saul is a darkly comedic crime series centred on Walter White’s criminal/lawyer, and tracks his transformation from small-town attorney James ‘Jimmy’ McGill (Bob Odenkirk) into the dodgy, lowlife, scam artist, alter-ego, Saul Goodman.
Set six years before Breaking Bad kicks off, Better Call Saul gifts viewers a front-row seat to the series of extraordinary, and extraordinarily tragic, events that forged one of television’s most truly despicable beings. Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, we get inside the mind of McGill as he takes on a job as the lawyer for a former police officer whose skills allow him to enter the criminal underworld.
Why should you watch it?  If for some reason the prospect of another five seasons of critically acclaimed TV featuring Bob Odenkirk as he becomes Saul Goodman wasn’t enough reason for you to watch alone, the welcome return of fellow Breaking Bad alumni Jonathan Banks as hitman Mike Ehrmantraut, and malevolent chicken king Gus Fring played by Giancarlo Esposito, should do the trick. Simply put, if you were addicted to the greatest television show ever made (or just like good TV), then you better watch Saul. If Better Call Saul was a band who would it be? Kyuss
When to watch:  Every episode of all FIVE seasons are available right now, so get streaming before the final season drops next year and we say goodbye forever. Bonus: If you’ve never seen Breaking Bad, you can also stream every episode of the series  – there’s a solid month of self-isolation viewing sorted!
The Little Drummer Girl
What: Based on John le Carré’s best-selling literary masterpiece, The Little Drummer Girl is an immersive thriller series about a  fiery actress who, upon meeting a mysterious stranger in Greece, is drawn into a high-stakes international espionage operation.
Set in the late 1970s, the pulsating drama stars the fantastic Florence Pugh as Charlie, the unfulfilled British actress and idealist whose resolve is tested after she meets Alexander Skarsgard’s Becker while on holiday. It quickly becomes apparent that his intentions are not what they seem, and their encounter entangles her in a complex plot devised by the spy mastermind Kurtz, played by the incomparable Michael Shannon. Charlie takes on the role of a lifetime as a double agent in the ‘Theatre of the Real’, but despite her natural mastery for the task at hand, she increasingly finds herself inexorably drawn into a dangerous world of duplicity and compromised humanity.
Why should you watch it? The Little Drummer Girl blurs the fine lines between love and hate; truth and fiction; and right and wrong, and will leave you in a state of near-constant suspense as layers upon layers of depth and intrigue are added each episode. And thanks to the international settings, it’ll feel like you’ve taken a trip to the other side of the world, multiple times, without ever leaving your house.
If The Little Drummer Girl was a band who would it be? Placebo
When to watch: All episodes of the thrilling British miniseries are available to stream right now.
Supernatural
What: When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester were children, they lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. All grown up, the brothers embrace their inner Buffy as they traverse the country seeking truth, vengeance, and their missing supernatural hunting father, kicking the ass of whatever force, human or otherwise, dares try to intervene.
Along the way, Sam begins to develop disturbing powers, including the ability to see graphic visualisations of people’s deaths before they happen. It’s these premonitions that then give additional purpose to the Winchester brothers’ quest as they try to prevent these lives being lost
Why should you watch it?  Put simply, Supernatural is one of the best shows of its genre ever made. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% across 14 (yes 14!) seasons, it’s a genuine masterclass in TV worldbuilding, with every episode playing a crucial role in the telling of a truly epic paranormal tale that expertly blends horror, mystery, drama and thriller conventions into one supernaturally good show.
If Supernatural was a band who would it be? Coheed and Cambria
When to watch: When you feel like some sibling bonding time, tuck into all 14 seasons of this iconic series on Stan.
Parasite
What: A pitch-black modern fairytale thriller, Parasite follows the near destitute and increasingly desperate Kim family as they infiltrate the ludicrously wealthy Park family, one lowly service job at a time, in a calculated effort to survive. A symbiotic relationship is forged, yet beneath the surface a parasite dwells, feeding on greed and class-discrimination, threatening to expose the truth.
Parasite is a film best enjoyed without any further context, so we’re not going to spoil the plot any more – all we’ll say is you’ve never seen a film t like it, and it’s very likely that once you’ve seen it, you’ll never be the same again.
Why should you watch it? After winning 4 Academy Awards, including the historic accolade of being the first foreign-language film to ever win ‘Best Picture’, and the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Parasite is South Korean director/writer Bong Joon-Ho’s (The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja) masterpiece. Perfectly cast and brilliantly layered, every single shot, plot twist and piece of dialogue uttered in Parasite is absolutely essential in adding to the omnipresent suspense. It’s funny, haunting and thrilling all at once, but the scariest and most shocking quality of all is just how POSSIBLE it seems. This is a movie that will haunt not just your nightmares, but your daydreams as well. Stop reading this, and watch it immediately. That 99% Rotten Tomatoes score didn’t get there by accident.
If Parasite was a band what would it be? Envy
When to watch: After being fast-tracked from cinemas, Parasite is already available to stream so get to it – just make sure you’re emotionally prepared.

In Search Of…
I didn’t realize the TV series In Search Of… which was hosted by Leonard Nimoy had such a long life. I only discovered the show which originally ran from 1977 to 1982 in syndication when History Channel began airing old episodes of it in the 1990s alongside things like Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious World. But while there were just 13 episodes of the Arthur C Clark series, there were more than 140 of In Search Of….
In Search Of… covered everything in the pseudoscience arena, from UFOs, to ghosts, the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis… and everything in between. Most of episodes asked a lot of questions but didn’t provide a lot of answers. Hence pseudoscience.
Ironically, where In Search Of… was an oddity on a channel in the 1990s that aired lots of documentaries and series about historical things, nowadays the simply titled History instead aires a lot of reality series like Forged in Fire and Mountain Men along with pseudoscience series of their own like Ancient Aliens. So I suppose it makes a lot of sense to reboot In Search Of… for a new generation.
Hosted by Zachary Quinto — who ironically like Nimoy also played Spock in Star Trek — this new 21st century version is essentially the old series all over again. The first episode covered UFOs and had the ubiquitous interview with three people who claim to have been abducted; one failed a polygraph test about his experiences, the other had an “implant” in a toe that turned out to be a rock while a third built a contraption so non-abductees can feel what it’s like to have that experience. There were also interviews with scientists too who were searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. Spoiler alert, nothing found… yet.
There’s nothing new in this overly long and drawn-out at an hour 2018 version of *In Search Of…” that hadn’t already been done before 40 years ago in the old. Since we’re living in 2018 and not 1977 the questions I would’ve liked answered are — if we live in a world that’s increasingly being constantly recorded from security cameras outside businesses to cameras within people’s doors and if essentially everyone on the planet are carrying around cameras in their mobile phones 24/7, then why aren’t we recording evidence of UFOs and abductions on a regular basis rather than less than before? To me that would’ve made an interesting episode, not the same thing that’s been done over and over and over again for decades now.
So far the new In Search Of… is just that, a lot of looking but not a lot of finding.
Doctor Who “Shada” animated special
I don’t think people are ever going to uncover a “lost” episode of Star Trek. All of the episodes of that show that were ever shot have aired, are available in many home media formats and it’s not like there were any episodes that were aired once and never seen again. Sure, maybe they’ll find clips of episode or reels of henceforth unknown behind the scenes footage of DeForest Kelley eating a hamburger on the bridge of the Enterprise, but not a whole episode people haven’t seen in years. However, that’s not the case for classic Doctor Who series. That show has nearly 100 episodes that are considered lost that aired a few times but the original archival tapes either went missing, were destroyed or taped over.
Shada
But just because those episodes are lost today doesn’t mean that they won’t be found tomorrow. In fact just a few years ago a batch of episodes were uncovered in Africa. However, not all episodes like this can be found, case in point “Shada” which originally was set to air during the 1979–1980 season. That episode, written by Douglas Adams, yes, that Douglas Adams, was partially shot but never finished due to a work strike. So with “Shada” it’s the case of BBC having some completed footage but not enough for a whole episode. What they’ve done is to put together an episode that’s partially composed of these already filmed live-action elements as well as portions of the episode that were created via animation like “The Power of the Daleks from a few years ago to fill in these gaps.
“Shada” is interesting if a bit difficult to watch for a non-Doctor Who fan. In fact, I think even fans of the modern Doctor Who series probably wouldn’t dig “Shada” — Matt Smith obsessives probably need not apply here. “Shada” is difficult to watch partially because the classic stories were always a bit slow — there’s a part of the episode that features the Doctor and his companion taking a long, leisurely boat ride down a river — and also because the switch from live-action to animation can be quite jarring. Because TV shows aren’t filmed in order means that a character can be outside one second in a live-action scene and walk through door into an animated scene.
“Shada” is for die-hard Doctor Who fans only, and luckily since I’m a die-hard Doctor Who fan it means “Shada” is for me.
Killing Eve
Can I talk about Killing Eve for a moment? This series has won loads of critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination and was a show I was excited to see before it premiered. That was before BBC America advertised it into the ground for me. Before the first episode aired BBC America began promoting the show like most networks do for new and upcoming series. But they didn’t just promote it, they promoted it several times each commercial break. Which meant that every time I watched an episode of The X-Files or Star Trek I’d see ten commercials for Killing Eve every hour. Watch a few episodes of anything on BBC America and you can see why I quickly grew tired of Killing Eve before it ever aired. I can still hear that, “I have to kill you, I’m really sorry,” song echoing around in my head from hearing it so much on the commercials.
So I never watched an episode of Killing Eve. And again, it’s getting great reviews so it’s my loss, but I figured that once the first season ended in May BBC America would be done with it until next year. Except they weren’t/aren’t. They’re still airing promos for the show only this time telling views to “binge” Killing Eve this summer and ones congratulating Sandra Oh for her Emmy nomination.
I give up, BBC America, you win. If I publicly say that Killing Eve is the best show on the planet even though I’ve never seen an episode will you please stop airing commercials for this show?
If this works for you contact me via this website. I am not joking.
