#Save Star Trek Prodigy

When I found out Paramount+ was removing Star Trek: Prodigy I bought all 20 episodes of S1 from Amazon Video since that was the only way for me to watch all 20 at the time. On 6/27, I lost access to episodes 10-20. Amazon has done what they can, which isn't much.

All 20 were accessible when I paid for all 20. The full season is what I was buying. Now, I only have access to 9 of the episodes.

What is the point of buying digital content if they're just going to steal it back from you afterwards?! Is this not false advertisement?

Paramount trying to get away with pretending a whole series doesn't exist as if they don't remember theyre talking to the Star Trek Fandom. The same fandom who made a holiday entirely to ensure that 27 years later no one ever forgets the canon, emmy award winning, salamander babies.

Please… everyone who likes Star Trek. PLEASE watch Prodigy. It’s on Netflix. There are 2 season, 40 episodes. It’s FANTASTIC.

The problem with Paramount+ removing, not just cancelling but removing, Star Trek Prodigy is that for Star Trek to exist as a franchise, as a thing that continues to be produced past the next 5-10 years Prodigy is the single most important Trek property.

The other shows are good and enjoyable but they’re made for existing Star Trek fans and aren’t picking up young fans the way Legacy Trek did. People are either too young to know this or it’s been so long that they’ve forgotten but Legacy Trek, particularly the Original Series, The Next Generation and Voyager, all had young fans because they aired in prime time on major networks when families watched TV together. Children would watch with their parents both because this is what passes as family time but also because the shows were appropriate and accessible to kids. They might not understand everything, but they’d get basic plot and could appreciate the character relationships. Don’t believe me? Go check the age rating for Voyager. It’s listed as 8+.

Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds aren’t interested in gaining new fans, particularly young fans. They move fast and don’t explain important concepts like how technologies work, political history, traits that are typical to each species. Great for old fans, adults, and for people who catch on fast but not great for kids. Additionally if parents even feel it’s appropriate to watch around kids the kids can go watch one of the many plot and character driven shows that are specifically made for 7-14 year-olds (we didn’t have that in the 90s. We had bootleg anime and comedy shows that started to lose appeal by the time we were 10).

There is no future for Star Trek without Prodigy. It is the thing that will keep Star Trek alive. You cannot have a successful franchise without children. By removing Prodigy Paramount is making it very clear they don’t have long term interest in Star Trek. If you like Strange New Worlds you’d better care real hard about Prodigy. Anson Mount knows that. Kate Mulgrew knows that. As long as Prodigy is unavailable Star Trek’s future is critically at risk.

Edit: I’ve seen some tags on this referencing piracy but Prodigy is not dead yet. The producers have said they’re fairly confident they can find a home for season 2 (and they seem like they think additional seasons are still possible) and the best thing we can do to help it find one faster is to buy the blu-ray, DVD, or paid downloads to show streaming networks that there’s a market for the show. Right now, July 9th 2023, the DVD and blu-ray are bouncing around the 10.99-19.99 price range on Amazon in the US. Prodigy was one of Paramount+’s most viewed shows, it was mostly likely removed as a tax write-off, so this is far from a hopeless cause.

So here’s something funny.

Animation (writers, actors, etc) is covered by different agreements than WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

So, imagine you were a network who had a critically and audience acclaimed animated show, with a new season almost done anyway, and no current strikes to stop you from producing more.

But you canceled it.

Star Trek Prodigy is one of the overall highest rated Star Trek series to date. It was saved by dedicated fans who campaigned hard to get Netflix to pick it up. Everyone who worked on the series has been excited and wanting to do more. Season 2 of Prodigy is one of the current best selling Blu-Ray DVD sets on Amazon. The show has been seen by and reviewed more positively in one month than in the 2 years since it was initially debuted. Like I cannot begin to tell you how hard it was to drum up interest in this show back during Season 1, and now it’s one of the most favorited Trek series in this current batch of Star Trek revitalizations.

Maybe I’m just feeling optimistic in the first time in years but… how could this NOT be a win for Netflix to pick up? This seems like the perfect storm of profitable for them. I really hope Netflix is smart and orders at least one more season. Please! 🙏
