My intent was to post here how to hook up and operate a stepper motor here using the Raspberry Pi 3B+. Then I thought that since I am trying to start this to be oriented for beginners, I would start with something simple. Light an LED. So I hooked up the few required parts. A current limiting resistor in series with an LED. So then I went to the raspberrypi.org website to follow their beginners project to light an LED. The website is difficult to navigate. When you find the project, it is simple and mostly easy to follow, however, they are using a graphical programing language called “Scratch” which I wasn’t familar with. It is a drag and drop sort of programming technique, which I can see will give a good view of the structure of programming that would be easier to remember and understand than just text. So I am having to back up further and learn the “Scratch” graphical programming environment. To complicate this effort, there are various versions of “Scratch”. There is “Scratch”, “Scratch 2” and now “Scratch 3”. Some of the Scratch lessons say that only work with “Scratch 3”. I noticed that my Pi only had Scratch and Scratch 2 on it, so I went to find out how to get 3 on it. I was pointed to a website that had Scratch 3, but it was only for other computers, like ones with Windows or macOS and the like. So I am going to try using scratch 2 to learn the programming environment. So you can see, I have had to back up a bit from my original intent to have the Pi move things with a stepper motor.

MacBook. Pong. Making It Happen.

Decided that onNovember 1, 2019 I am going to be buyhing a refurbished MacBook Pro from the Apple reseller around the corner from my apartment and as soon as I get my hands on it, I am going to make a Ponggame (a GOOD one!) and put it up on itch.io + Newgrounds.com :))))

I have been wanting to make this Pong game for a while and since I basically know what I am doing (+ learn quick, anyway) from building my FIRST Pong game in the #CS50x class in 2018, this thing is going to be a blast to make, and I am going to be building it in #Scratch2.

I am going to be doing this 100% for ME and for FUN and if you cannot already tell, I had a very productive therapy appt today, and I gained a hell of a lot of confidence in myself. Good times, indeed.

Also, I bought a lot of fruit and coffee and other good stuffs at the store earlier, and have nothing to do tomorrow AM so I am going to get in a 4+ mile walk at Cliff Cave Park (again) around 8:30 AM as long as the #STLWX is good (and it will be).

Priority #1 : exercise

Priority #2 : build the Pong game

No other outstanding priorities in my life at this time. LOL! Seriously though, these are the things I am focusing most on. I suppose it is good to be an early Millennial and not have to give a fuck about having kids or obtaining a mortgage or burdening my life with stress and other bullshit when I can just be a happyindividual all by my damnself and not care about conformity. That sounded a bit chessy, but whatever.

To list every package installed on your Raspberry Pi you can use :

dpkg -l

This command will list all packages, with this format :

The df command doesn’t directly display the space used by each program, but to find the most significant packages you can do something like this :

This command will get the size of each package, and sort it by size You can replace the last -10 option to get more results

Learning coding by doing, with Scratch v2

Or how much more good material is out there?

After various attempts at python, it was time to try something else though I will probably be back for more later.

This time this is the old Scratch, for quick gaming/prototyping.

What amazed me was the ease with which my daughter was able to chime in towards the end. She will get a chance at doing it from scratch (literally and literally) soon enough.

After trying to create entire real scale maps from Excel, I went back to sprite based plotting based on a 2D map stored as a string. Regarding checking of possible movements, solutions gravitated first around sensory solutions ( sprite color X detected to encounter color Y below) then ended up more on the map derived approach.

I wish the variables were less buggy when used in conjunction with messages, but this is no deal breaker. Also, variables do stack up eventually, will need to optimize.

Not sure how to handle tables yet, and I have not yet found return values for functions.

Well, this gives me quite an appetite for finding the minimal solution on this platform, and what a joy to have a working game in a few hours!

The graphics approach also seemed in line with some screenshots I saw on the NASA ‘s SPHERES program I saw not so long ago, both are somehow linked to MIT.
