Lightning—one, two, three—and thunder. For centuries, people have estimated the distance of a thunderstorm from the time between lightning and thunder. The greater the time gap between the two signals, the further away the observer is from the location of the lightning. This is because lightning propagates at the speed of light with almost no time delay, while thunder propagates at the much slower speed of sound of around 340 metres per second.

Earthquakes also send out signals that propagate at the speed of light (300,000 kilometers per second) and can be recorded long before the relatively slow seismic waves (about 8 kilometers per second). However, the signals that travel at the speed of light are not lightning bolts, but sudden changes in gravity caused by a shift in the earth’s internal mass. Only recently, these so-called PEGS signals (PEGS = prompt elasto-gravity signals) were detected by seismic measurements. With the help of these signals, it might be possible to detect an earthquake very early before the arrival of the destructive earthquake or tsunami waves.

However, the gravitational effect of this phenomenon is very small. It amounts to less than one billionth of the earth’s gravity. Therefore, PEGS signals could only be recorded for the strongest earthquakes. In addition, the process of their generation is complex: they are not only generated directly at the source of the earthquake, but also continuously as the earthquake waves propagate through the earth’s interior.

Until now, there has been no direct and exact method to reliably simulate the generation of PEGS signals in the computer. The algorithm now proposed by the GFZ researchers around Rongjiang Wang can calculate PEGS signals with high accuracy and without much effort for the first time. The researchers were also able to show that the signals allow conclusions to be drawn about the strength, duration and mechanism of very large earthquakes. The study was published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

An earthquake shifts the rock slabs in the earth’s interior abruptly, and thus changes the mass distribution in the earth. In strong earthquakes, this displacement can amount to several meters. “Since the gravity that can be measured locally depends on the mass distribution in the vicinity of the measuring point, every earthquake generates a small but immediate change in gravity,” says Rongjiang Wang, scientific coordinator of the new study.

However, every earthquake also generates waves in the earth itself, which in turn change the density of the rocks and thus the gravitation a little bit for a short time—the earth’s gravity oscillates to some extent in sync with the earthquake. Furthermore, this oscillating gravity produces a short-term force effect on the rock, which in turn triggers secondary seismic waves. Some of these gravitationally triggered secondary seismic waves can be observed even before the arrival of the primary seismic waves.

“We faced the problem of integrating these multiple interactions to make more accurate estimates and predictions about the strength of the signals,” says Torsten Dahm, head of the section Physics of Earthquakes and Volcanoes at GFZ. “Rongjiang Wang had the ingenious idea of adapting an algorithm we had developed earlier to the PEGS problem—and succeeded.”

“We first applied our new algorithm to the Tohoku quake off Japan in 2011, which was also the cause of the Fukushima tsunami,” says Sebastian Heimann, program developer and data analyst at GFZ. “There, measurements on the strength of the PEGS signal were already available. The consistency was perfect. This gave us certainty for the prediction of other earthquakes and the potential of the signals for new applications.”

In the future, by evaluating the changes in gravity many hundreds of kilometres away from the epicentre of an earthquake off the coast, this method could be used to determine, even during the earthquake itself, whether a strong earthquake is involved that could trigger a tsunami, according to the researchers. “However, there is still a long way to go,” says Rongjiang Wang. “Today’s measuring instruments are not yet sensitive enough, and the environmentally induced interference signals are too great for the PEGS signals to be directly integrated into a functioning tsunami early warning system.”

Canada runs roughshod over host Denmark at hockey worlds

Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are showing that the chemistry they’ve built as linemates with the Edmonton Oilers can translate to the international stage.

Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and McDavid had three assists as Canada cruised to a 7-1 victory over host Denmark on Monday at the world hockey championship.

Canada beat Denmark 7-1 for their 2nd straight win at the 2018 World Hockey Championship, moving them into 2nd place in group B behind the United States. 1:24

“They played quite a bit together down the stretch at the National Hockey League level and they’ve continued on here internationally,” Canada coach Bill Peters said. “They think the game at a high level and read off each other real well.”

Josh Bailey, Aaron Ekblad, Jordan Eberle, Ryan O’Reilly and Tyson Jost also scored for Canada, which now has two regulation wins and a shootout loss through three games.

Nugent-Hopkins, normally the No. 2 centre in Edmonton, was elevated to the left wing Oilers’ top line late in the NHL season and had 15 points in 13 games playing with McDavid.

The two are clicking again in Denmark. McDavid, who now has seven points through three games, had a hand in both of Nugent-Hopkins’ goals.

“The first one, I got a little lucky with where I placed it,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “I just tried to chip it out and get some speed. Connor drove the net, which drove back the [defenceman] a little bit. I just had to put it five-hole.”

‘I never want to give up a goal’

On his second goal, Nugent-Hopkins said: “Connor made a great play on the blue line, again. He created a lot of space and tried to find Schwartzy [Jaden Schwartz]. It bounced off the D-man’s skate and came to me out front. I just had to tuck it upstairs.”

Making his second start in as many games, Toronto Maple Leafs backup Curtis McElhinney was perfect until he was beaten on a shot by Jesper Jensen Aabo that deflected off a Canadian player, 8:07 into the third period.

“Just a redirection — that’s how things are going to go at this point I think,” said McElhinney. “Teams are just looking for bounces and stuff. They got one at the end.

“It’s tough; I never want to give up a goal but I thought overall the team played great in front of me tonight.”

The 34-year-old McElhinney, who is suiting up for Canada for the first time in his career at any level, made 14 saves as he continued his strong bid for the No. 1 job.

“Every test that he’s gotten, he’s stepped up to it,” Peters said. “There have been some really good chances that we’ve given up so he’s had to be sharp. That’s exactly what he’s done.”

Monday’s much-anticipated matchup between McElhinney and Maple Leafs goaltending partner, Frederik Andersen, didn’t materialize. Denmark coach Jan Karlsson elected to rest his top netminder against Canada after Andersen faced 80 shots in his first two games.

The host nation is currently in tough to reach the quarterfinal — tied for fifth place after three games, with the only top four advancing to the elimination round. Andersen will be needed for Denmark’s more winnable games through the remainder of the preliminary round.

Ice was tilted in Canada’s favour

Sebastian Dahm got his first start of the tournament for Denmark, making 22 saves on 29 shots.

The ice was tilted in Canada’s favour right from the opening puck drop. The visitors outshot their hosts 14-2 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead off a power-play goal from Bailey and an even-strength slap shot from the blue line by Ekblad, set up by a smooth cross-ice pass from McDavid.

After Mat Barzal had a power-play goal early in the second period waved off due to goaltender interference, Eberle converted in the slot on another power play for his second of the tournament at 4:16, before O’Reilly showed off his strong skating and slick hands with a roof job over Dahm’s glove at 6:53.

Nugent-Hopkins made it 5-0 just 24 seconds later, off the rush on a delayed penalty. He added his second of the game at the 6:43 mark of the third, and Jost finished off the scoring with his third of the tournament with 1:50 left in the third period.

With its enthusiasm sagging, the crowd of 10,800 at Jyske Bank Boxen sprang back to life when Denmark got on the board in the third period off a deflection in the slot that went between the legs of a surprised McElhinney. Fans stood and applauded their team with a thunderous ovation as the final seconds of the game wound off the clock.

In earlier action on Monday, Keith Kinkaid earned his second-straight shutout as the United States defeated Germany 3-0 to stay on top of the Group B standings, while Russia recorded its third-straight shutout with a 6-0 win over Belarus in Group A in Copenhagen. In the late game in Group A, Sweden beat France 4-0.

Canada now sits second in the Group B standings, one point behind the United States.

Canada’s next game is Thursday against Norway, which is 0-1-1-0 through two games.

Osterode. Die Entscheidung um den Gesamtsieg im ADAC Rallye Masters 2017 fällt beim Finale bei der ADAC 3-Städte Rallye Ende Oktober. Nach ihrem jeweils sechsten Divisionssieg liegen Carsten Mohe / Alexander Hirsch (Crottendorf / Tannenberg) in ihrem Renault Clio R3T aus der Division 4 weiterhin knappe 3 Punkte vor Max Schumann (Riegelsberg), der wieder mit Co-Pilotin Maresa Lade (Wallenhorst) im Suzuki Swift die Division 6 gewann. Da im ADAC Rallye Masters nur die besten sieben der acht möglichen Resultate gewertet werden, könnten sich beide mit einem weiteren Sieg beim Finale auf die maximale Punktzahl verbessern. Die Punktgleichheit würde dann die höhere Anzahl der Teilnehmer in den Divisionen über den Titel entscheiden. Bei der ADAC Rallye Niedersachsen (08.-09. September 2017) rund um Osterode am Harz waren Ruben und Petra Zeltner (Lichtenstein) im Porsche 911 GT3 auf Gesamtrang vier das schnellste Team aus dem Masters-Feld.

Hinter Mohe und Schumann ist auch der Kampf um den dritten Gesamtrang extrem spannend. Roman Schwedt (Opel Adam R2, Division 5) mit 101 Punkten, Peter Corazza (Mitsubishi Lancer, Div. 2, 100), Florian Just (Citroen C2R2, Div. 5, 94) Peter Wald (BMW M3, Div. 3, 92) und Sebastian von Gartzen im Citroen DS3 R3T (Div. 4) mit 91 Punkten können sich noch berechtigte Hoffnungen machen.

Der Fernsehsender n-tv zeigt bereits am Sonntag direkt nach der Rallye (10. September) um 07.30 Uhr das halbstündige Magazin “PS – DRM – Die Deutsche Rallye-Meisterschaft”. Division 2 Auch wenn Peter Corazza (Oelsnitz) zusammen mit Jörn Limbach (Ermsleben) im Mitsubishi Lancer erneut die Division 2 dominierte, war der Sachse nicht zufrieden: “Das Auto wollte an diesem Wochenende nicht so ganz wie wir. Die straffe Asphaltabstimmung für dieses Jahr konnten wir kurzfristig nicht an die Gegebenheiten hier anpassen.” Platz zwei belegten Michael Bieg / Dietmar Moch (Lindlar / Kürten) in einem weiteren Lancer, “auf der Freitagsetappe haben wir nicht direkt attackiert, da wir lange nicht mehr im Regen gefahren sind. Am Samstag lief es dann besser, ich habe mehr Mut gefasst und bremste später. Am Ende wollten wir nur noch ins Ziel und die Punkte mitnehmen”. Ebenfalls in einem Lancer beendeten zwei Lokalmatadore ihr Heimspiel auf dem dritten Platz. Das Ehepaar Carsten und Marina Kratzin aus Osterode strahlte, “damit haben wir überhaupt nicht gerechnet, wir konnten uns immer weiter nach vorne schieben.”

Division 3 Sie sind zurück: Der zweimalige Deutsche Rallye-Meister Ruben Zeltner und Ehefrau Petra präsentierten erstmals ihren neuen Porsche 911 GT3, von den Fans liebevoll ‘brüllendes Zebra’ genannt, bei einem Lauf zum ADAC Rallye Masters. “Wir sind wieder zurück und es macht richtig Spaß, das Zebra brüllt und alles war gut”, freute sich Zeltner über den souveränen Divisionssieg. Platz zwei ging an Timo Grätsch / Alexandra Gawlick (Handewitt) in ihrem BMW M3. “Die beiden ersten WP im Regen auf Slicks, das war definitiv die falsche Wahl. Als dann Andreas Dahms im Porsche so weit zurückfiel, haben wir nur noch den zweiten Platz verwaltet und die Punkte ins Ziel gerettet.” Für die Divisionsdritten Andreas Dahms / Inka Lerch (Sprenge / Eickeloh) endete jede Ambition auf eine bessere Platzierung schon in der ersten WP. “Wir hatten bei der Reifenwahl falsch gepokert und rutschten in unserem Porsche 911 Carrera direkt in einen Graben. Dennoch hat die Aufholjagt viel Spaß gemacht, ich mag diese regnerischen Bedingungen.”

Division 4 Mit dem sechsten Divisionssieg verteidigten Mohe / Hirsch im Renault Clio R3T ihre knappe Führung in der Gesamtwertung des ADAC Rallye Masters. “Unsere Division war wieder extrem stark besetzt, vor allem Walter Gromöller im Opel Ascona 400 war gut unterwegs. Wir geben weiterhin unser Bestes und wollen unsere Konkurrenz schlagen, die Entscheidung fällt jetzt beim Finale.” Walter Gromöller / Maik Bredenförder (Gütersloh / Melle) rutschten auf den finalen Prüfungen durch eine falsche Reifenwahl auf den dritten Platz ab. “Mit der Divisionsführung nach der Freitagsetappe fing die Rallye sehr gut an und auch am Samstag konnten wir teilweise sehr gute Zeiten fahren. Alles in allem bin ich mit dem Auto und dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden”, sagte Gromöller. Den zweiten Platz erkämpften sich Sebastian von Gartzen (Gießen) und Co-Pilot Hans-Peter Loth (Frankfurt) im Citroen DS3 R3T. “Wir sind teilweise mit einem Regen Set-up gefahren und die Strecke war trockener als erwartet. Wir sind zum ersten Mal im Nassen mit dem Auto gefahren, dafür ist das Resultat super.”

Division 5 Turbulent ging es in der Division 5 zu. Roman Schwedt / Henry Wichura (Heusweiler / Berlin) lagen im Opel Adam R2 ab der zweiten Prüfung an der Spitze und konnten die Führung auf gut eine halbe Minute ausbauen. Nach der fünften WP sprang ihr Adam nicht mehr an, die Fehlersuche im Service und die anschließende Reparatur sorgte für eine Verspätung und wurde mit 150 Strafsekunden geahndet. Mit einem Rückstand von zwei Minuten machte sich der 18jährige DSK-Youngster auf die Aufholjagd. Im Ziel fehlten 3,9 Sekunden auf Florian Just / Marco Schönfelder (Burgpreppach / Neuhengstett) im Citroen C2R2. Doch diese haderten ebenfalls mit der Technik: “Auf WP 6 ist uns der Schaltheben abgebrochen, Marco und ich mussten jeder mit einem Finger dann ganz vorsichtig schalten. Das hat uns gut eine Minute gekostet. Durch die Verspätung an der Zeitkontrolle kamen noch zehn Sekunden dazu”, berichtete Just. Über seinen ersten Divisionssieg freute er sich riesig, “wir kommen im C2 immer besser zurecht, mit diesen Punkten haben wir uns die Chancen auf den Divisionssieg und einen Podestplatz in der Gesamtwertung des ADAC Rallye Masters erhalten.” Hinter Just und Schwedt belegten Johannes Treimer / Gerd Brudermann (Wangels / Stade) im Opel Astra den dritten Platz.

Division 6 Der saarländische Youngster Max Schumann (Riegelsberg) dominierte gemeinsam mit Co-Pilotin Maresa Lade (Wallenhorst) im Suzuki Swift erneut die Division 6 für die kleinsten Fahrzeuge im ADAC Rallye Masters. Im Ziel hatten sie gut dreieinhalb Minuten Vorsprung auf Tobias, den jüngeren der Just-Brüder (Burgpreppach) und dessen Co-Pilotin Sabrina Türk (Himmelkron) in einem weiteren Swift. “Wir konnten von Anfang an einen Vorsprung herausfahren und dann verwalten. Das war wichtig, denn gerade an entscheidenden Ecken konnten wir ein wenig Gas rausnehmen, das hat gepasst”, sagte Schumann. Mit Blick auf den Gesamtsieg im ADAC Rallye Masters – hier liegt er weiterhin knappe drei Punkte hinter Mohe – erklärte er: “Wir erwarten das große Finale in Bayern und dann schauen wir, was dabei herauskommt.” Für Just war Platz zwei ok, “unser Speed passt, ich bin sehr zufrieden, teilweise konnten wir sogar das Tempo von Max mitgehen. Das war meine erste Rallye mit dem Swift im Regen, auf der ersten Prüfung am Freitag fühlte sich das an wie in der Fahrschule.” Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol und Co-Pilotin Jennifer Lerch (Saarbrücken / Eickeloh) fuhren in einem weiteren Swift auf Rang drei ins Ziel.

ADAC Rallye Masters: Carsten Mohe übernimmt allein die Führung • Peter Corazza ist erneut schnellster Pilot aus dem ADAC Rallye Masters • Carsten Mohe führt knapp vor Max Schumann • 30 Minuten Rallye-Magazin auf n-tv am 25.06.2017 um 07.30 Uhr Lübbecke. Der Kampf um die Gesamtführung im ADAC Rallye Masters geht in die entscheidende Phase. Nachdem Carsten Mohe (Renault Clio R3T, Division 4) und Max Schumann (Suzuki Swift, Division 6) bislang je viermal ihre Divisionen gewonnen hatten und punktgleich an der Spitze lagen, gab es nun die erste unterschiedliche Punktevergabe. Beim fünften von acht Saisonläufen bei der ADAC Rallye Stemweder Berg (23. – 24. Juni 2017) konnten beide ihre Divisionen nicht gewinnen. In der Gesamtwertung führen Mohe (Crottendorf) mit Co-Pilot Alexander Hirsch (Tannenberg) nach Platz zwei mit 118 Punkten vor dem saarländischen Youngster Max Schumann (Riegelsberg, Platz drei) mit 115 Zählern, der diesmal mit Co-Pilotin Maresa Lade (Wallenhorst) unterwegs war. Als schnellstes Team aus dem ADAC Rallye Masters belegten Peter Corazza / Jörn Limbach (Oelsnitz / Ermsleben) im Mitsubishi Lancer beim Lauf in Lübbecke den siebten Platz der Gesamtwertung und schoben sich mit dem dritten Divisionssieg in Folge mit nun 75 Punkten auf Rang vier der Masters-Gesamtwertung.

Division 2 Vom Start weg übernahm Corazza die Führung in der Division und konnte sie stetig ausbauen. “Das war letztendlich auch das Problem, da ich nur gegen mich selbst gefahren bin habe ich mich am Ende sogar kurz rausgedreht. Ich fighte lieber, als den Vorsprung zu verwalten”, sagte Corazza im Ziel. “Für unser Punktekonto war der dritte Divisionssieg in Folge natürlich auch gut.” Das Podium wurde komplettiert von zwei weiteren Lancer-Teams. Auf Platz zwei fuhren Sebastian Wolf / Andreas Luther (Lich / Eisenach). Bei seiner allerersten Rallye sicherte sich Dennis Rostek (Bückeburg) gemeinsam mit Co-Pilot Siggi Schrankl (Obing) direkt den dritten Platz auf dem Podest.

Division 3 Zwei Porsche Teams in ihren identischen 911 Carrera 3,2 machten den Sieg in der Division 3 unter sich aus. Am Ende lagen Andreas Dahms / Inka Lerch (Sprenge / Eickeloh) vor Kai-Dieter Kölle (Grube), dem schnellsten Bauern Deutschlands, mit Co-Pilotin Lena Zornig (Seedorf). “Auf identischen Autos gegeneinander anzutreten macht riesigen Spaß”, sagte Kölle, “es freut mich wirklich, dass Andreas endlich mal vorne liegt”. Dahm strahlte, “es ist so toll, dass wir die Führung bis ins Ziel verteidigen konnten.” Der dritte Rang ging an die Saarländer Sascha Winter / Christian Schwindt (Wahlschied / Heusweiler) in ihrem BMW M3. “Gegen die beiden Porsche hatten wir keine Chance, aber die Prüfungen hier machen unheimlich viel Spaß”, strahlte Winter. Peter und Michael Wald (Sennfeld), das Vater-Sohn-Duo im BMW M3 sicherte sich trotz Überhitzungsproblemen mit Rang vier die so wichtige Divisionsführung nach den bisherigen fünf Läufen. In der Gesamtwertung des ADAC Rallye Masters belegen sie weiterhin Rang drei.

Division 4 Die Entscheidung um den Sieg in der Division 4 fiel erst auf den letzten Metern und dann auch noch so knapp. Vom Start weg übernahmen Sebastian von Gartzen / Hans-Peter Loth (Gießen / Frankfurt) im Citroën DS3 R3T die Führung, mussten sie aber nach drei WP wieder an die Seriensieger Carsten Mohe / Alexander Hirsch (Crottendorf / Tannenberg) im Renault Clio R3T abgeben. Mohe bleib zwar bis zur letzten Prüfung vorn, konnte sich aber nie entscheidend absetzen. Auf dem finalen Durchgang der WP Ströhen setzte von Gartzen dann den Joker, “die Prüfung lag uns einfach richtig gut”, setzte die Bestzeit und war nach einer Gesamtfahrzeit von 1:26:06,4 Stunden um den Hauch von 0,9 Sekunden schneller. “Ich hätte nie geglaubt, dass wir auf einer Prüfung alles entscheiden könnten,” strahlte von Gartzen über seinen ersten Divisionssieg. “Wir wollten unbedingt gewinnen, auch wegen der Punkte fürs Masters”, sagte Mohe, ergänzte aber, “Sebastian hat diesen, wenn auch knappen Sieg wirklich verdient.” Im schnellen Rallye-Oldie namens Opel Ascona 400 sicherten sich Walter Gromöller / Klaus Bröckelmann (Gütersloh / Rietberg) den dritten Divisionsrang.

Division 5 Für Niklas Stötefalke begann sein Heimspiel bereits mit einer Schrecksekunde, als er im Shakedown seinen Opel Adam R2 unsanft an eine Mauer anlehnte. Nach der erfolgten Reparatur übernahm er im Wettbewerb das Kommando und ließ seinen Markenkollegen Roman Schwedt (Heusweiler) hinter sich. Das Duell endete am Samstagmorgen, als er den Adam wegen Thermikproblemen abstellen musste. Der Divisions-Sieg ging erstmals an Schwedt, der sagte, “leider dauerte der spannende Zweikampf um den Sieg mit Niklas nicht bis zum Schluss. Bei der letzten Rallye hat es mich erwischt, dieses Mal Niklas, wir sehen uns wieder beim nächsten Lauf in Thüringen”. Platz zwei ging an Ralf Schlerfer / Normen Standke (Hohen Neuendorf / Neuruppin) im Honda Civic, den dritten Platz belegten Gerd Sonntag / Fabian Peter (Gütersloh) im Mitsubishi 1600 GSR.

Division 6 Max Schumann (Riegelsberg) ist der Seriensieger in der Division 6. Auch am Stemweder Berg übernahm er im Suzuki Swift zunächst die Führung. Auf WP drei verbog er sich beim Kontakt mit einem Hindernis die Hinterachse und musste aufgeben. Mit 15 Minuten Strafzeit als Ballast nahm er nach der erfolgreichen Reparatur am Samstag den Kampf wieder auf um wenigstens noch einige Punkte zu retten. “Kleiner Fehler, große Wirkung, aber das passiert halt mal”, so Schumann. Danach lief alles für den Saarländer: Die Konkurrenten mussten den anspruchsvollen Prüfungen Tribut zollen und einer nach dem anderen aufgeben. Der Divisionssieg ging an Toni Mosel / Eric Fiedler (Neuwürschnitz / Oelsnitz) im Renault Twingo R1. “Das ist mein dritter Start hier, die erste Zielankunft und dann auch noch der Divisionssieg”, strahlte der Erzgebirgler. Platz zwei ging an Martin Ritschel / Christoph Kapser (Langenberg / Frankfurt) im Suzuki Swift. Für den dritten Platz erhielt Schumann dann nur drei Punkte weniger als sein direkter Konkurrent Mohe, der ebenfalls den Divisionssieg verpasste. “Aber entschieden ist noch nichts, denn im Masters werden nur sieben der acht Resultate gewertet, da heißt es jetzt bei den folgenden Läufen Gas geben”, sagte Schumann.
