The Emergence of NFTs: Transforming Digital Ownership and Creativity
Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have revolutionized the way we think about digital ownership, art, and collectibles. By leveraging blockchain technology, NFTs provide a way to create, buy, sell, and own unique digital assets with verifiable provenance and scarcity. This article explores the world of NFTs, their impact on various industries, key benefits and challenges, and notable projects, including a brief mention of Sexy Meme Coin.
What Are NFTs?
NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are unique digital assets that represent ownership of a specific item or piece of content, such as art, music, videos, virtual real estate, and more. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, which are fungible and can be exchanged on a one-to-one basis, NFTs are indivisible and unique. Each NFT is recorded on a blockchain, ensuring transparency, security, and verifiability of ownership.
The Rise of NFTs
NFTs gained mainstream attention in 2021 when digital artist Beeple sold an NFT artwork for $69 million at Christie's auction house. This landmark event highlighted the potential of NFTs to transform the art world by providing artists with new revenue streams and collectors with verifiable digital ownership.
Since then, NFTs have exploded in popularity, with various industries exploring their potential applications. From gaming and music to real estate and fashion, NFTs are creating new opportunities for creators, businesses, and investors.
Key Benefits of NFTs
Digital Ownership: NFTs provide a way to establish true digital ownership of assets. Each NFT is unique and can be traced back to its original creator, ensuring authenticity and provenance. This is particularly valuable in the art and collectibles market, where forgery and fraud are significant concerns.
Monetization for Creators: NFTs enable creators to monetize their digital content directly. Artists, musicians, and other content creators can sell their work as NFTs, earning revenue without relying on intermediaries. Additionally, smart contracts can be programmed to provide creators with royalties each time their NFT is resold, ensuring ongoing income.
Interoperability: NFTs can be used across different platforms and ecosystems, allowing for interoperability in the digital world. For example, NFTs representing in-game items can be traded or used across multiple games and virtual worlds, enhancing their utility and value.
Scarcity and Collectibility: NFTs introduce scarcity into the digital realm by creating limited editions or one-of-a-kind items. This scarcity drives the collectibility of NFTs, similar to physical collectibles like rare coins or trading cards.
Challenges Facing NFTs
Environmental Impact: The creation and trading of NFTs, especially on energy-intensive blockchains like Ethereum, have raised concerns about their environmental impact. Efforts are being made to develop more sustainable blockchain solutions, such as Ethereum's transition to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.
Market Volatility: The NFT market is highly speculative and can be volatile. Prices for NFTs can fluctuate significantly based on trends, demand, and market sentiment. This volatility poses risks for both creators and investors.
Intellectual Property Issues: NFTs can raise complex intellectual property issues, particularly when it comes to verifying the rightful owner or creator of the digital content. Ensuring that NFTs are legally compliant and respect intellectual property rights is crucial.
Access and Inclusivity: The high costs associated with minting and purchasing NFTs can limit accessibility for some creators and collectors. Reducing these barriers is essential for fostering a more inclusive NFT ecosystem.
Notable NFT Projects
CryptoPunks: CryptoPunks are one of the earliest and most iconic NFT projects. Created by Larva Labs, CryptoPunks are 10,000 unique 24x24 pixel art characters that have become highly sought-after collectibles.
Bored Ape Yacht Club: Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is a popular NFT collection featuring 10,000 unique hand-drawn ape avatars. Owners of these NFTs gain access to exclusive events and benefits, creating a strong community around the project.
Decentraland: Decentraland is a virtual world where users can buy, sell, and develop virtual real estate as NFTs. This platform allows for the creation of virtual experiences, games, and social spaces, showcasing the potential of NFTs in the metaverse.
NBA Top Shot: NBA Top Shot is a platform that allows users to buy, sell, and trade officially licensed NBA collectible highlights. These video clips, known as "moments," are sold as NFTs and have become popular among sports fans and collectors.
Sexy Meme Coin (SXYM): Sexy Meme Coin integrates NFTs into its platform, offering a decentralized marketplace where users can buy, sell, and trade memes as NFTs. This unique approach combines humor and finance, adding a distinct flavor to the NFT landscape. Learn more about Sexy Meme Coin at Sexy Meme Coin.
The Future of NFTs
The future of NFTs is bright, with continuous innovation and expanding use cases. As technology advances and more industries explore the potential of NFTs, we can expect to see new applications and opportunities emerge. From virtual fashion and digital identities to decentralized finance (DeFi) and beyond, NFTs are poised to reshape various aspects of our digital lives.
Efforts to address environmental concerns, improve accessibility, and ensure legal compliance will be crucial for the sustainable growth of the NFT ecosystem. Collaboration between creators, platforms, and regulators will help build a more robust and inclusive market.
Conclusion
NFTs have ushered in a new era of digital ownership, creativity, and innovation. By providing verifiable ownership and provenance, NFTs are transforming industries ranging from art and entertainment to gaming and virtual real estate. While challenges remain, the potential benefits of NFTs and their ability to empower creators and engage communities make them a significant force in the digital economy.

North Korean hackers have stolen the equivalent of billions of dollars in recent years and the nation is seeking to amass even greater wealth through illicit means, experts told DW.
Hackers belonging to the Lazarus Group — a notorious North Korean crypto theft ring — stole a record $1.5 billion (some €1.37 billion) in digital tokens from Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange ByBit in late February. The company said the hackers had accessed its digital wallet for Ethereum, the second-largest electronic currency after Bitcoin.
Binance News, a new platform operated by cryptocurrency exchange firm Binance, reported last month that North Korea now has some 13,562 Bitcoins, the equivalent of $1.14 billion. Bitcoin is the world's oldest and best known cryptocurrency, often compared with gold due to its alleged resistance to inflation. Only the US and Great Britain have greater reserves of the currency, Binance News said, citing crypto data provider Arkham Intelligence.
"Let's not mince words — [North Korea] achieved this through theft," Aditya Das, an analyst at cryptocurrency research firm Brave New Coin in Auckland, New Zealand, told DW.
"Global policing agencies like the FBI have publicly warned that North Korean state-sponsored hackers are behind numerous attacks on cryptocurrency platforms," he added.
Hackers use social engineering against crypto firms
Despite those warnings, however, crypto firms are still being robbed and North Korean hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the analyst said.
"North Korea employs a wide range of cyberattack techniques, but they've become especially known for their skill in social engineering," said Das.
"Many of their operations involve infiltrating employee hardware, then using that access to breach internal systems or lay traps from the inside."
The hacker's primary targets are crypto startups, exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms due to their "often under-developed security protocols," he said.
Recovery of funds 'extremely rare'
Elite North Korean hackers tend to take their time when infiltrating a legitimate global organization, often by impersonating venture capitalists, recruiters or remote IT workers to build up trust and breach firms' defenses.
"One group, Sapphire Sleet, lures victims into downloading malware disguised as job applications, meeting tools or diagnostic software — essentially turning victims into their own attack vectors," Das said.
Once crypto has been stolen, Das says recovery is "extremely rare." Cryptocurrency systems are designed to make transactions irreversible and striking back against North Korean operatives "is not a viable option because these are nation-state actors with top-tier cyber defenses."
Kim Jong Un's regime 'saved' by cryptocurrency theft
Park Jung-won, a professor of law at Dankook University, said North Korea previously relied on risky transactions — such as smuggling narcotics and counterfeit goods or supplying military instructors to African nations — to earn illicit funds.
The legal expert says the advent of cryptocurrency "has been a huge opportunity" for dictator Kim Jong Un.
"It is probably fair to say that given the way the world was cracking down on Pyongyang's smuggling efforts, crypto has saved the regime," Park told DW. "Without it, they would have been completely without funds. They know that and they have invested heavily in training the best hackers and getting them up to a very high level of skill."
"The money that they are stealing is going straight to the government and the assumption is that it is being spent on weapons and greater military technology as well as the Kim family," according to Park.
North Korea immune to international pressure
Park does not believe that outside pressure would force North Korea to end hacking attacks.
"For Kim, the survival of his dynasty is the most important priority," the law professor said.
"They have become accustomed to this source of revenue, even if it is illegal, and they will not change," he added. "There is no reason for them to suddenly start abiding by international law and there is no way to apply more pressure."
Das agrees there are few tools available to influence North Korea. He says companies need to do everything in their power to avoid becoming the next victim.
"Best practices like secure-by-design smart contracts, constant internal verification and social engineering awareness are essential if the industry wants to stay ahead," he said.
Crypto firms need universal security standards
There's growing momentum for sector-wide information sharing which would help crypto firms detect North Korean tactics and avert attacks, but Das warns that crypto remains "fragmented" because there is no universal security standard. Also, North Korean hackers are good at turning security tools against their users, according to the analyst.
"In the Bybit case, the attackers exploited Safe, a multi-signature wallet system meant to enhance security. Ironically, this added security layer became the very exploit they used," he said.
And in practice, Das added, "some firms still treat security as an afterthought."
"From my experience, teams often prioritize shipping fast over building secure systems and until that changes, the space will remain vulnerable," Das said.

American R&B singer Aliaune Thiam, professionally known as Akon, has long wanted to help Senegal, the country he grew up in. He started Akon Lighting Africa in 2014 to install cheap Chinese solar-powered lighting systems across the continent. He hoped to do something more significant for Senegal. But how to fund it?
The answer turned out to be the same one adopted by a growing number of governments and entrepreneurs: a mixture of cryptocurrency and urban planning. It’s a combination that offers the promise of development without any of the tricky details—and which tends to turn out to be little more than vaporware. There was Bitcoin City in El Salvador, but also Painted Rock in Nevada, Satoshi Island in Vanuatu, Cryptoland in Fiji, or the Crypto-Kingdom of Bitcointopia in Utah.
In 2018, Akon announced a new cryptocurrency, to be called “akoin.” Akoin would enable Africans to, as the singer put it at a launch event, “advance themselves independent of the government”—in some manner. Most importantly, akoin would fund the creation of Akon City, an advanced planned city to be built in Senegal. Akon announced akoin and Akon City at the Cannes Lions Festival in June 2018. Akon said in November of that year that he had “everything planned out” for the city. But both Akon City and the akoin token remained only ideas for many months.
Akon was interested by the promises of cryptocurrency—specifically, free money by some unclear mechanism—but he was not up on the details of its technical or financial issues: “I come with the concepts and let the geeks figure it out,” he said. The akoin team featured initial coin offering (ICO) entrepreneurs such as Lynn Liss of ICO Impact and Crystal Rose Pierce.
The akoin cryptocurrency was pre-sold in a 2019 crypto token offering called “token of appreciation.” Each dollar “donation” would give you up to four tokens which would convert to akoin.
Akoin had not launched in Senegal at the time, despite billboards across the country. The West African CFA franc is the only legal currency in Senegal; BCEAO, the central bank, warned that akoin could not be used as a currency in the country.
Akoin promised all manner of functionality—special akoin wallet software, direct exchange with other cryptocurrencies or with cellphone minutes, an application marketplace, various “building blocks for entrepreneurship.” None of this was ever implemented.
Akoin finally started trading on a crypto exchange in November 2020. The akoin token didn’t do anything or have any particular utility; it was just a crypto token that you could trade. Pre-sale buyers dumped their akoin immediately and the price crashed. That’s not unusual: As of 2022, 24 percent of new cryptos fell 90 percent or more in their first week.
Akon posted on social media in January 2020 that he had “finalized the agreement for AKON CITY in Senegal”—though he had previously claimed that construction had already started in March 2019. The new city would be built near the small town of Mbodiène, about 100 kilometers south of the capital, Dakar.
Akon City would be a “smart city” inspired by the futuristic African nation of Wakanda from the 2018 movie Black Panther. The city would feature boldly curved skyscrapers, shopping malls, music and movie studios, “eco-friendly” tourist resorts, and a parking garage for flying cars.
Akon claimed in August 2020 that $2 billion of the $6 billion needed to build Akon City had been secured. He laid the foundation stone for the city on Aug. 31, 2020, and said that construction would start “next year,” in 2021.
Construction did not start in 2021, to the disappointment of locals. It was not clear where the $6 billion needed to build Akon City would come from. A representative for KE International, the United States-based contractor for Akon City, told AFP that more than $4 billion had been secured, with Kenyan entrepreneur Julius Mwale as lead investor, and that construction would start in October 2021—but it did not.
By 2022, Akon told the BBC that construction was “100,000 percent moving.” He said the COVID-19 pandemic was partly to blame for the delays. Akon was surprised at the “thousands of studies” that had to be done before work could even commence.
Senegal’s Society for the Development and Promotion of Coasts and Tourist Zones (SAPCO) had claimed the land by eminent domain in 2009 before offering it to Akon City in 2020. By 2023, no building work had been done at the Akon City site—though Axiome Construction insisted that geotechnical studies and environmental assessments were still under way. By this time, according to the Guardian, the only construction was a youth center nearby in Mbodiène, paid for personally by Akon—and built upon the foundation stone that he had laid in 2020.
Senegal finally lost patience with the project. Akon had missed several payments to SAPCO, and in June of this year, SAPCO sent a formal notice to Akon warning that work had to start by the end of July or SAPCO might take back almost all of the land grant.
Akon had already been looking for other opportunities to place akoin. In April 2021, he started talking to Uganda about setting up an Akon City there as well. In January 2022, the Ugandan government allocated him one square mile in Mpunge, in the Mukono district—despite objections from the National Unity Platform party and protests from Mpunge residents wanting compensation, which could not be paid before 2025.
Akon said that Akon City, Uganda, might be completed by 2036. At a 2021 news conference, he evaded questions on what the new city would cost or how it would be funded. The Forum for Democratic Change party said that the Ugandan Akon City would never happen and accused the government of granting “sweetheart deals” to developers.
Akon City was tech solutionism that leveraged the political power of celebrity. Akon wanted to launch a large project and thought that cryptocurrency, the buzzword of 2018, might fund his dream. He thought that this one weird trick would do the job.
In this case, the miracle technology was crypto. These days, such pushes by celebrities or entrepreneurs of new projects will typically use artificial intelligence—whatever that might mean in a particular case—as the marketing hook for a “smart city.
In his 2023 book Let Them Eat Crypto, Peter Howson of Northumbria University detailed how to head off solutionism-inspired blockchain projects that were heavy on publicity but light on the necessary bureaucratic work on the ground. His approach is broadly applicable to tech solutionism in general: Pay attention to the men behind the curtain. Howson has written recently on “smart city” plans as marketing for crypto tokens.
The Akon City plan was a worked example of speculative urbanization. A project is proposed with science-fiction concept drawings and a pitch aimed at tourists rather than locals; land is allocated; something might eventually be built, but it will bear little resemblance to the brochures. Christopher Marcinkoski of the University of Pennsylvania described Akon City as just one of many such initiatives, particularly in Africa, calling it “very much a real estate play.” The important output from such projects is local political capital—even as they never work out as advertised.
Cryptocurrency was an application of speculative urbanization to money—a high concept, a pitch to financial tourists, and the only end result being a token to speculate on and a tremendous amount of fraud. The Akon City project, however good Akon’s own intentions, seems functionally to have been merely the pitch for a crypto offering that failed—leaving an empty site, disappointed locals, and an embarrassed figurehead.
By 2024, akoin had been removed from the few crypto exchanges it had been listed on; it was effectively worthless. Akon sold short videos on Cameo—but he would not do requests related to cryptocurrency.
The speculative urbanization pitch rolls on. Actor Idris Elba has recently floated plans for an “environmentally friendly smart city” on Sherbro Island off Sierra Leone.

🚀 This Coin Could Make You a Millionaire – Here’s Why I'm Using UPB to Invest in It

Have you ever looked at a coin like Bitcoin or Ethereum and thought, "If only I had invested earlier..."? You’re not alone — I’ve been there too.
But here’s the thing: 2025 is full of opportunities that weren’t around 2 or 3 years ago. There are undervalued altcoins quietly gaining momentum — and if timed right, the returns can be life-changing.
Today, I want to share one such coin I’ve been watching closely, and why I’m using UPB (Universal Payment Bank) to invest in it securely and efficiently.
💡 My Crypto Journey: From FOMO to Focus
Like many of you, I got into crypto during the late 2020s hype. I rode the wave, made some gains — and also learned a few hard lessons about volatility and security. One thing that stuck with me was this:
Success in crypto isn’t just about “what” you buy — it’s also how and where you manage your assets.
That’s when I came across UPB – Universal Payment Bank, a modern crypto banking platform that gives me control, confidence, and convenience in one place.
But more on UPB in a bit. First, let’s talk about the coin that could turn the tables in 2025.
🌟 The Coin: Real Utility, Real Future
I’m not giving financial advice here — just sharing what I’m personally looking at. The coin is called XYZ Token (let’s call it that for now). It’s currently priced well under $1 and has:
Strong developer backing
Real-world utility in decentralized finance (DeFi)
Partnerships with fintech apps and NFT platforms
A growing user base in Asia and Europe
Why does that matter? Because projects that solve real problems and show consistent development are more likely to survive — and thrive — in the long term.
Based on current trends, if XYZ reaches even a fraction of the market cap of top 10 altcoins, early holders could see 10x to 50x returns.
🔐 Why I Use UPB to Invest in Crypto
Now here’s where UPB comes into play.
In 2023, I made the mistake of spreading my assets across multiple wallets and exchanges — it became a nightmare to track, and security was always a concern.
When I discovered UPB Online, everything changed.
Here’s why I’ve stuck with it since:
✅ Easy & Secure Login
UPB offers a seamless login experience with 2FA and session protection, so I know my funds are safe.
✅ Multi-Coin Support
Whether it’s BTC, ETH, or newer altcoins like XYZ, UPB supports a wide range of assets in one clean dashboard.
✅ Real-Time Tracking
I can monitor my portfolio value and individual coin performance without needing to switch apps.
✅ Peer-to-Peer Transfers
Transferring crypto to friends or my hardware wallet is fast, with low transaction fees and no hidden charges.
✅ Trust & Transparency
UPB is gaining a reputation for being one of the most trusted crypto banking solutions, with compliance, encryption, and responsive customer support.
If you’re serious about growing your crypto wealth, having a reliable financial platform like UPB is non-negotiable.
📈 How I’m Planning My Next Move
Here’s my current strategy (again — not advice, just personal experience):
Accumulation Phase – I’m gradually buying XYZ Token every week instead of a lump sum.
Using UPB for Storage – Once purchased, I move my assets to UPB to track and manage securely.
Goal-Based Holding – My target is to hold until the coin reaches a realistic price target — not hype-based.
Patience is key here. I’m not chasing pumps; I’m building long-term value.
🧠 Final Thoughts: It’s Not Too Late
A lot of people believe they’ve missed the boat with crypto — but I disagree. The market is maturing. Real utility is being built. Platforms like UPB are making crypto safer and simpler for the average user.
So ask yourself:
What if this is your second chance?
What if the next big thing isn’t Bitcoin, but a smaller altcoin flying under the radar?
Whether it’s XYZ Token or something else, the right tools make all the difference.
And for me, that tool is UPB.

The Rise of DeFi: Revolutionizing the Financial Landscape

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) has emerged as one of the most transformative sectors within the cryptocurrency industry. By leveraging blockchain technology, DeFi aims to recreate and improve upon traditional financial systems, offering a more inclusive, transparent, and efficient financial ecosystem. This article explores the fundamental aspects of DeFi, its key components, benefits, challenges, and notable projects, including a brief mention of Sexy Meme Coin.
What is DeFi?
DeFi stands for Decentralized Finance, a movement that utilizes blockchain technology to build an open and permissionless financial system. Unlike traditional financial systems that rely on centralized intermediaries like banks and brokerages, DeFi operates on decentralized networks, allowing users to interact directly with financial services. This decentralization is achieved through smart contracts, which are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code.
Key Components of DeFi
Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs): DEXs allow users to trade cryptocurrencies directly with one another without the need for a central authority. Platforms like Uniswap, SushiSwap, and PancakeSwap have gained popularity for their ability to provide liquidity and facilitate peer-to-peer trading.
Lending and Borrowing Platforms: DeFi lending platforms like Aave, Compound, and MakerDAO enable users to lend their assets to earn interest or borrow assets by providing collateral. These platforms use smart contracts to automate the lending process, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
Stablecoins: Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets like fiat currencies to reduce volatility. They are crucial for DeFi as they provide a stable medium of exchange and store of value. Popular stablecoins include Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), and Dai (DAI).
Yield Farming and Liquidity Mining: Yield farming involves providing liquidity to DeFi protocols in exchange for rewards, often in the form of additional tokens. Liquidity mining is a similar concept where users earn rewards for providing liquidity to specific pools. These practices incentivize participation and enhance liquidity within the DeFi ecosystem.
Insurance Protocols: DeFi insurance protocols like Nexus Mutual and Cover Protocol offer coverage against risks such as smart contract failures and hacks. These platforms aim to provide users with security and peace of mind when engaging with DeFi services.
Benefits of DeFi
Financial Inclusion: DeFi opens up access to financial services for individuals who are unbanked or underbanked, particularly in regions with limited access to traditional banking infrastructure. Anyone with an internet connection can participate in DeFi, democratizing access to financial services.
Transparency and Trust: DeFi operates on public blockchains, providing transparency for all transactions. This transparency reduces the need for trust in intermediaries and allows users to verify and audit transactions independently.
Efficiency and Speed: DeFi eliminates the need for intermediaries, reducing costs and increasing the speed of transactions. Smart contracts automate processes that would typically require manual intervention, enhancing efficiency.
Innovation and Flexibility: The open-source nature of DeFi allows developers to innovate and build new financial products and services. This continuous innovation leads to the creation of diverse and flexible financial instruments.
Challenges Facing DeFi
Security Risks: DeFi platforms are susceptible to hacks, bugs, and vulnerabilities in smart contracts. High-profile incidents, such as the DAO hack and the recent exploits on various DeFi platforms, highlight the need for robust security measures.
Regulatory Uncertainty: The regulatory environment for DeFi is still evolving, with governments and regulators grappling with how to address the unique challenges posed by decentralized financial systems. This uncertainty can impact the growth and adoption of DeFi.
Scalability: DeFi platforms often face scalability issues, particularly on congested blockchain networks like Ethereum. High gas fees and slow transaction times can hinder the user experience and limit the scalability of DeFi applications.
Complexity and Usability: DeFi platforms can be complex and challenging for newcomers to navigate. Improving user interfaces and providing educational resources are crucial for broader adoption.
Notable DeFi Projects
Uniswap (UNI): Uniswap is a leading decentralized exchange that allows users to trade ERC-20 tokens directly from their wallets. Its automated market maker (AMM) model has revolutionized the way liquidity is provided and traded in the DeFi space.
Aave (AAVE): Aave is a decentralized lending and borrowing platform that offers unique features such as flash loans and rate switching. It has become one of the largest and most innovative DeFi protocols.
MakerDAO (MKR): MakerDAO is the protocol behind the Dai stablecoin, a decentralized stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. MakerDAO allows users to create Dai by collateralizing their assets, providing stability and liquidity to the DeFi ecosystem.
Compound (COMP): Compound is another leading DeFi lending platform that enables users to earn interest on their cryptocurrencies or borrow assets against collateral. Its governance token, COMP, allows users to participate in protocol governance.
Sexy Meme Coin (SXYM): While primarily known as a meme coin, Sexy Meme Coin has integrated DeFi features, including a decentralized marketplace for buying, selling, and trading memes as NFTs. This unique blend of humor and finance adds a distinct flavor to the DeFi landscape. Learn more about Sexy Meme Coin at Sexy Meme Coin.
The Future of DeFi
The future of DeFi looks promising, with continuous innovation and growing adoption. As blockchain technology advances and scalability solutions are implemented, DeFi has the potential to disrupt traditional financial systems further. Regulatory clarity and improved security measures will be crucial for the sustainable growth of the DeFi ecosystem.
DeFi is likely to continue attracting attention from both retail and institutional investors, driving further development and integration of decentralized financial services. The flexibility and inclusivity offered by DeFi make it a compelling alternative to traditional finance, paving the way for a more open and accessible financial future.
Conclusion
Decentralized Finance (DeFi) represents a significant shift in the financial landscape, leveraging blockchain technology to create a more inclusive, transparent, and efficient financial system. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is backing away, one by one, from the volley of lawsuits and investigations it brought against cryptocurrency businesses under the Joe Biden administration, in a reversal described by a former attorney at the regulatory agency as “unprecedented.”
In the weeks since Donald Trump returned to the White House, the SEC has wasted no time in overhauling its crypto division. The day after the inauguration, the agency established a “crypto task force” responsible for developing a “comprehensive and clear regulatory framework for crypto assets.” Then, the SEC rebranded its crypto investigations branch into a smaller-scale “cyber and emerging technology unit.”
On February 13, a federal judge granted a joint request by the SEC and Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, to pause their ongoing litigation while they await new rules from the crypto task force. The SEC petitioned for a similar pause on Wednesday in a separate case against Justin Sun, the Chinese crypto entrepreneur who recently announced he had invested $75 million in a crypto project with ties to the Trump family.
In the last week alone, the SEC agreed to drop its lawsuit against crypto exchange Coinbase outright, while trading platforms Robinhood and Uniswap, nonfungible token marketplace OpenSea, and crypto software company Consensys all celebrated the apparent end of SEC investigations into their respective crypto activities.
The recalibration of the SEC’s previously adversarial stance toward crypto is meant to afford companies the “freedom to experiment and build interesting things,” said SEC commissioner Hester Peirce in a recent statement, while still shielding investors from fraud. But others have interpreted the pivot as a signal that the crypto industry will be subject to a far-reduced level of scrutiny.
“The dismantling of the SEC enforcement program is mammoth. The radical turnabout that the SEC has undertaken in the last month is truly unbelievable,” says John Stark, who served for 18 years as an attorney at the SEC. Ultimately, he says, the SEC’s lawsuits against crypto firms “are all going to be gone, gone, gone.”
The SEC did not respond to an interview request or a request for comment relating to this story.
The New Crypto Game Plan
During the Biden presidency, the SEC was a thorn in the side of crypto businesses, which it repeatedly asserted had violated US securities laws by failing to register with the agency. It was near-impossible to do business in the US, Coinbase told WIRED in 2023, with the constant fear of litigation hanging overhead and without any crypto-specific rules to follow.
In response to what crypto businesses considered outright hostility from the SEC under Biden, the industry embarked on a colossal lobbying effort in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Crypto companies and their executives funneled more than $150 million into three super political action committees—Fairshake, Protect Progress, and Defend American Jobs—set up to support pro-crypto congressional candidates. Meanwhile, high-profile crypto figures—among them Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, cofounders of the crypto platform Gemini, and Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, venture capitalists heavily invested in crypto startups—came out in support of Trump. The strategy apparently worked.
In July, on the campaign trail, Trump promised a crowd of bitcoiners that he would fire previous SEC chair Gary Gensler if reelected. “I didn’t know he was that unpopular,” said Trump, referring to the crowd’s rapturous response to the pledge. In November, after Trump won the election, the crypto industry got to help handpick the nominee to replace Gensler, landing on Paul Atkins, a former SEC commissioner who has expressed the view that crypto businesses have been treated unfairly in the US. (Atkins remains sidelined for now, pending confirmation.)
The argument advanced by the crypto industry—that it was subjected to wrongful lawsuits by a politically motivated regulator—is likely to have struck a chord with Trump, says Anthony Scaramucci, founder of the crypto-focused investment firm SkyBridge Capital and former communications director for Trump. “Trump is a big believer in lawfare,” says Scaramucci. “If you go to Trump saying you’re a victim of lawfare … he’s going to side with that.”
According to Stand With Crypto, a nonprofit pushing for bespoke crypto regulation in the US, more than 250 pro-crypto representatives were elected to Congress in 2024. The crypto industry claimed high-profile scalps in races in which it had invested most heavily: In Ohio, incumbent Democratic senator Sherrod Brown, depicted as an archvillain in crypto circles, was unseated by Republican Bernie Moreno. Through Defend American Jobs, the crypto industry spent more than $40 million in support of Moreno.
Having witnessed the efficacy of the crypto lobbying machine, politicians concerned about the security of their own seats are potentially less likely to voice opposition to the industry in the future, says Scaramucci, which in turn increases the chances of crypto-specific regulation falling into place and crypto-focused legislation making it into law.
“The Democrats have gotten the life scared out of ’em,” says Scaramucci. “You have to have regulatory clarity. With the Trump administration, you’ll get that. You’ve got enough Democrats scared that will side with [Republicans] to create that.”
A Double-Edged Sword
The SEC’s retreat from its outstanding lawsuits against crypto businesses will be received as an early signal of the agency’s intent to work arm in arm with the industry to come up with a set of rules to govern crypto transactions and products.
That rule book will clear up the question at the heart of the lawsuits: Which crypto assets should be classified as securities, the specific type of investment product over which the SEC has jurisdiction, and in what context?
“I think the industry sees regulators willing to work across the table from them,” says Coy Garrison, a partner at law firm Steptoe and a former SEC attorney. “That’s the difference. Four years ago, the other side of the table was just the enforcement arm.”
But it’s a mistake to interpret the SEC’s withdrawal from the crypto-related cases as a total loosening of the leash, claims Garrison. “Sometimes, it’s easy for people to only see the top line,” he says. “The SEC is still going to be policing potential fraudulent activity within its jurisdiction relating to crypto.”
It is unlikely that the SEC’s new stance toward crypto will trigger an immediate proliferation of new crypto products and services in the US. But once the crypto task force has set out its rules, crypto companies will feel emboldened to enter new corners of the US market, sources say.
“The creativity of the crypto industry knows no bounds,” says Stark. “From retirement money to 529s, exchange-traded funds, asset-backed securities, and derivatives. Expect crypto to infiltrate everywhere. Why not?”
Meanwhile, assets like memecoins, a class of crypto coin that typically has no strict purpose but to act as a vehicle for financial speculation, are likely to go unregulated by the SEC. A few days prior to his inauguration, Trump himself launched a memecoin, which was roundly criticized—including by members of the crypto industry—as an alleged money grab and a potential vector for bribery.
In recent lawsuits brought against memecoin platforms and promoters, complainants sought to argue that memecoins meet the definition of a security in certain conditions and should therefore be subject to securities laws. But on Thursday, the SEC put out a statement outlining the view that memecoins do not fall within its jurisdiction.
“The likelihood of the SEC conducting an investigation into a memecoin is slim to none—and slim just left town,” says Stark.
The obvious benefits for crypto businesses associated with the changes at the SEC must be weighed against the potential reputational downsides that come with the unwillingness of the new-look agency to police the most unserious and grift-heavy corners of the sector.
Similarly, the warmth shown toward the industry by the White House comes with a caveat: Trump appears intent to share in the financial upside through crypto endeavors of his own, which some have argued will heap scorn onto the industry and undermine its search for legitimacy.
“With Donald Trump, you get the entire buffet table. There’s no à la carte,” says Scaramucci. “You start with the grifting and self-dealing,” he alleges. “Then you’re getting some pro-crypto ideas and regulation. You’ve got to eat everything.”

A Complete Guide to Adding Custom Tokens on STON.fi

Cryptocurrency is constantly evolving, with new tokens emerging regularly. While some tokens make it onto default exchange lists, many remain unlisted, requiring users to manually add them. If you’ve ever come across a token that isn’t available by default on STON.fi, you’ll need to import it using its contract address.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know about adding custom tokens to STON.fi, understanding community assets, and ensuring safe trading.
Understanding Token Imports
When a token isn’t included in STON.fi’s default selection, it doesn’t mean it’s nonexistent or unusable. Some tokens are newly launched, project-specific, or community-driven. STON.fi allows users to add these manually using a contract address, ensuring greater accessibility for traders.
But here’s the thing: manually importing a token means taking full responsibility for verifying its legitimacy. Unlike pre-listed tokens that have been reviewed and approved, imported tokens can be created by anyone.
Step-by-Step Process for Importing a Token on STON.fi
Adding a token to STON.fi is a straightforward process, but attention to detail is essential.
Step 1: Obtain the Contract Address
Before anything else, you’ll need the contract address of the token you want to add. A contract address is a unique identifier that ensures you're adding the correct asset. You can typically find this on:
Official project websites
Blockchain explorers (like TONScan)
Verified community announcements
Using the correct contract address is crucial. Many scam projects create tokens with similar names to well-known assets, tricking traders into adding fake tokens. Always cross-check the address with reliable sources.
Step 2: Search for the Token on STON.fi
Once you have the contract address, proceed to STON.fi and:
1. Open the token selection menu.
2. Paste the contract address into the search bar.
3. Wait for the system to fetch the token details from the blockchain.
At this stage, STON.fi retrieves key information about the token, including its name, ticker symbol, and available trading pairs.
Step 3: Confirm and Import the Token
If everything checks out, the next step is to finalize the import:
Click ‘Agree and Proceed’ to add the token.
The token will now be accessible in your interface.
Once imported, it will be labeled as ‘Imported’ on your current device, ensuring you can track it easily in future transactions. Other users won’t see it unless they also import it or have community assets enabled.
Community Tokens: What They Are and Why They Matter
STON.fi provides users with access to community-listed tokens, expanding trading opportunities beyond default selections. However, community tokens come with their own risks.
Key Points About Community Tokens:
They are user-added – Anyone can create and add a token to STON.fi, meaning they aren’t reviewed or verified by the platform.
They require due diligence – Traders must research liquidity, security, and legitimacy before investing.
They can be volatile – Low liquidity or lack of development support can lead to price instability.
To access all community-added tokens, enable the ‘Community Assets’ option in settings. This allows visibility of tokens others have added, reducing the need for manual imports.
Deprecated Assets: What You Need to Know
STON.fi also gives users the ability to view Deprecated Assets—tokens that were once on the platform but later removed. There are various reasons why a token might be deprecated:
The project is inactive or abandoned.
Liquidity has dropped to unsustainable levels.
The token was flagged for security concerns.
If you enable Deprecated Assets, you’ll be able to see these tokens, but they won’t appear by default. This feature is useful for traders who want a full overview of all previously supported tokens.
Final Thoughts: Trade Wisely, Stay Informed
STON.fi’s token import feature is a valuable tool, but it puts the responsibility on the trader. Unlike pre-listed tokens that have been reviewed, imported and community tokens require personal research and caution.
If you’re adding a new token, verify its contract address, check its liquidity, and assess its market activity. By staying informed, you can expand your trading experience while minimizing risks.
With this knowledge, you now have full control over which tokens appear on your STON.fi interface—allowing for a personalized and flexible trading experience.
