Thom’s New Gibson ES-330 in Detroit
Tumblr media
A photo of Thom with his latest Gibson ES-330, from Tom Skinner’s instagram account.
On December 4 in Atlanta, The Smile performed the song Teleharmonic for the first time. The song was first used on the soundtrack to the sixth season of Peaky Blinders, under the title “Teleharmonic Phaser”. It was also listed as an alternative song on Thom’s setlist for his solo show at Zermatt Unplugged, using the title “Teleharmonic / Europa” (presumably he couldn’t decide which to use). However, Thom decided not to play the song in Zermatt. The name of the song was doubtless inspired by the Make Noise Teleharmonic eurorack module, since Thom has become a massive fan of Make Noise in recent years.
For the premier performance of Teleharmonic in Atlanta, Thom played a faded-looking Gibson ES-330 guitar. He used the same guitar for the most recent show in New Orleans too. We first saw the guitar in a photo titled “Detroit pt. 3 : Thom” from Tom Skinner’s Instagram account. The photo was posted on December 3, but The Smile played Detroit on November 28, and possibly spent a couple days there given Tom Skinner’s abundant photos. The ES-330 has a 3-tone sunburst finish, and the cracks in the finish suggest it’s a vintage instrument, probably from the 1960s. The guitar also appears to have bound f-holes, which indicate that it’s a new guitar for Thom. Bound f-holes are rare on an ES-330, so the original owner might have custom ordered this instrument from Gibson.
Tumblr media
Thom with his sunburst Gibson ES-330 on Radiohead’s 2012 tour (photo by David Hall). Note the absence of binding on the f-holes, showing that this is a different guitar to the one played in Atlanta.
It’s notable that Thom played an ES-330 because he hasn’t been seen with one in almost a decade. He played a sunburst ES-330 heavily during the King of Limbs and Atoms for Peace eras (2009-2013). He’s even seen playing that guitar in a rare photo (taken at Drew Barrymore’s LA home) from the recording of The King of Limbs. However, during Radiohead’s 2012 tour, Thom borrowed Ed’s vintage Epiphone Casino for a few songs. It seems Thom liked the guitar, because he almost immediately after bought a pair of vintage Casinos for himself. After 2013, he stopped playing out with the ES-330.
Modern reissue versions of the Gibson ES-330 and Epiphone Casino can vary quite a bit. But in the 1960s, they were pretty similar, which is unsurprising since Gibson bought Epiphone in 1957. Both were true hollowbody guitars with Gibson P90 pickups. The main differences were the finish on guitar and the headstock. On Gibsons, the upper bout is painted solid, while on Epiphones the upper bout has the same burst as the rest of the guitar. The headstocks are also different shapes, and each has the name of the brand printed. Given the similarities, it’s unsurprising that Thom is a fan of both guitars.
There’s a couple key differences between the ES-330 and its more popular sibling, the ES-335. The semi-hollow ES-335 has humbuckers and a solid center block, which gives it a sound very similar to a Les Paul or SG (despite any marketing claims, the main difference in the plugged-in sound of the LP, SG, and 335 comes from tolerance variations in pickups and capacitors). In contrast, the ES-330 is a true hollowbody guitar, and it features P90 single coils. The very similar Epiphone Casino is also a true hollowbody with P90 single coils. That construction is the reason the ES-330 and Casino are prone to feedback at high gain. But they can also feel more resonant and “alive”, which is perhaps the reason Thom likes them. After all, he makes great use of that feedback during There There at live shows (playing a hollowbody Gibson ES-125T).

If you have an instrument in your room you should play it as much as possible or else I'll do it for you. I have sexual feelings for your beautiful Squier semi hollowbody guitar with the pearlescent pickguard and if you don't treat her right then I will and she won't want to hang out with you anymore. She felt so good under my hands

lagu
akhirnya ku tlah temukan kamu
"liriknya bagus. lagu baru?" tanyanya.
"baru, tapi bukan laguku." jawabku.
dia mengerutkan dahi mendengar jawabanku barusan. "terus lagu siapa dong?"
"lagu artis label, tapi kebetulan aku dibolehin buat nyumbang lirik." ujarku.
"lirik sebagus itu kamu kasih secara cuma-cuma ke orang lain?" dia bertanya dengan wajah keheranan.
aku tertawa mendengar ucapannya. "ya ngga cuma-cuma dong, Ya. kan nanti aku juga dapet bayaran."
"lagipula suaraku sama suara dia ya jelas bagusan suara dia." lanjutku.
"hah? apa? gimana?" dia membulatkan matanya.
"ya, iya. kamu yang jadi sumber inspirasiku selama ini." jelasku sambil menatap matanya lekat.

While hoping that things had gotten relatively easier, Light wasn't one to get his hopes up. And he was glad he didn't when they went into the main room of the base when they had thought everyone had gone to bed.
Gibbous' face alone told just how both of them felt upon seeing the blue speedster sitting where Light normally would when he would play his guitar for the toddler. A huff was given in response to the raised gloved hand in greeting, but Light at least was civil enough to raise his in return.
"Look..." That was one way to start the conversation, Light mused and shifted to sit down with his guitar on one leg. Mismatched eyes and a neutral expression made him hard to read, but that didn't seem to stop Sonic.
Although he did try to keep from stepping too close to Gibbous.
"I... I'm sorry. I know you're here to help and we kinda reached out to you after you pulled that whole stunt in Robotropolis." Light remained quiet, leaning a bit on his guitar in the process. "It's just hard. Ya know? You were made by HIM... Both of you were and it... she was dragged around my cell daily to flaunt how good of a pet I would make once they broke our spirits..."
Seeing Sonic struggle did bring both bioprojects pause as they looked at one another. Gibbous scrunched her nose, debating something, but soon just made her way to sit next to the former soldier's leg. Jade eyes looked up at the hero as he looked down to her. "I can't just forget those things, but I... I shouldn't be taking it out on you..."
She said nothing, just turned her head away to look up at Light when he reached down with one hand to rub between her ears. "But she's right. I've been an asshole... To both of you and I shouldn't be. You both didn't have a choice in the way your lives started... So.. I wanted to make it up to you."
Now there was a question on Light's face. A scarred brow had raised as he turned his head just slightly. There was a catch in there. There had to be, but his golden eyes were drawn to the instrument being held out to him.
"You only have the acoustic... right?" Light nodded at the question. "Well.. Thanks to you, I have a guitar I can play anytime, anywhere. Figured maybe you could make some use outta this one? Since I don't need it."
For a moment, the room was silent. Semi-comfortable but as it grew, there was something that seemed to draw the former soldier's thoughts. He wasn't sure what exactly had compelled him to set his acoustic to the side and stand, but his hand reached out to take the offered guitar.
Gibbous had panicked at the sudden flash of light that filled the room. "Daddy?"
As quick as it came, it disappeared. Sonic and Light stood still for a moment before they instinctively took a step back from one another.
The guitar had gone from being handed off, to settled around the former soldier with a black strap. From the bright red color to a much more subdued orange sunburst with black edges. Even the body shape had changed from an electric Stratocaster Solidbody to a Les Paul Hollowbody. It felt so natural that Light's hands had settled on it the moment he had the familiar weight of the strap on his shoulder.
"What the..." Light was at a loss for a moment, looking down at the instrument in disbelief. And as quickly as it had appeared, if vanished in a familiar flash of light, leaving the former soldier reeling. Until he looked at his wrist, to what looked like a wristband with the symbol of a guitar length wise.
"Guess I'm not the only one with a magic guitar now..."

The hollowbody has been there through it all, from the dawn of the electric guitar through rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, punk, and classic rock. Although the hollowbody electric guitar has been threatened by the widespread availability of more compact and lightweight solid and semi acoustic electrics, its enormous body contains more than just air; it also conceals a unique tone that its competitors can't duplicate. If you look around, you'll see that there are more than a few hollowbody guitars available, and that means you have a lot of alternatives to consider when deciding which one is the best for you. The Jacob Golden will guide you to the best hollow body electric guitar in 2022.

As I watched this Lesser Black-backed Gull catch a wave I couldn't help but think about surfing and remembering hocking my surfboard so I could afford to buy a Fender Telecaster Thinline (electric guitar). I loved that surfboard, but honestly, living on the east coast of the USA I didn't use it much and I loved that guitar more! I eventually hocked the telecaster though, to get a semi-hollowbody Gretsch Tennessean with a Bigsby tremolo. That guitar was the beautiful instrument that I ever laid eyes upon and that guitar carried through most of my musical career until... Yes, you guessed it, I hocked it! Do you see a pattern emerging? Letting go of attachments is an enlightening experience that I believe truly improves the way one can look at the world. Which brings me back to watching this Gull here, what this moment is about was not surfing, or guitars, but the journey we take when we choose the path of freedom. What we gain far outweighs what we lose. #best_birds_of_ig #best_birds_of_instagram #wildlifeaddicts #exclusive_wildlife #wildplanet #birdswatching #majestic_wildlife_ #animal_sultans #wildlife_perfection #capturethewild #wildlife_vision #animalfanatics #birdyourworld #birdsmagazine #raw_animals #naturegrampixels #lesserblackbackedgull #larusfuscus #oceanwaves #catchawave #noattachments #birdsinflight #flyingbirds #choices #beautifulmoments #seabirds #gulls #seagull #jonathanlivingstonseagull #marthasvineyard (at Martha's Vineyard) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmWn3zBuLoK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Courtney’s green Mercury guitar.
This is a hugely detailed back story so bear with me. Less than 100 of these guitars were ever made – some even say as little as 30.
Tim George and Danny Babbitt were the original creators and designers behind Mercury Guitars – based in Atlanta, Georgia.
They started on the aesthetic development of the Mercury in early ’92. The actual shape was inspired by the smaller Rickenbackers.
It was originally called the “Gemini” – they wanted a name which was timeless and somehow they settled on ‘Mercury’.
The guitars were designed to be mass produced. This is the reason for the string through body design, it was a bunch cheaper - they actually got the parts from the hardware store.
The first Mercury prototype had a brown sunburst body. At this point, things started to go fast for Tim & Danny.
The original ones built were of various colours. Danny worked during the day at a huge store in Atlanta called Rhythm City and they allowed him to put the guitars in the store. They sold one to the band Collective Soul, they sold one to a guy in a band called Head Hunter. Another one was sold to the guitar player for Porno For Pyros. One was sold to Guy Picciatto of Fugazi.
They built a metallic green Mercury (a special vintage General Motors paint colour, a paint typically used for cars) for Tim personally. One night, Danny saw Nirvana was in town and he wanted to try and get it in front of Kurt. Somehow he got backstage and he met Courtney Love and she fell in love with the vintage green Mercury guitar and asked if he could sell it to her. Of course they could! They were now on cloud 9. This was huge. Soon after they sold Courtney the guitar, they went to another Nirvana show (they think Mississippi) and got back stage again. They met the band (minus Kurt) and pre-sold a guitar to Pat Smear and somehow got the go ahead to build one for Kurt. This was “off the charts” (according to Tim) and they went home in a daze. Pretty soon after this, Kurt passed away and Courtney went on tour.
Things after that got pretty tough for Tim & Danny – life became tumultuous due to some personal happenings (bad landlords, getting kicked out of their share house and having to get rid of their guitar making tools) and they grew apart emotionally and lost their passion for making guitars together.
Right before they left their home in Georgia, Courtney had called to ask for more guitars for the tour. This was not possible. “I don’t think we even replied. This was foolish because she probably would have paid for us to build a shop or at least bought us the tools we needed.” – Tim.
Some time passed.
“I saw the Hole “Violet” video one night at a bar and got to see our guitar make music video history. You will notice the Mercury 3+3 headstock in the video and the Mercury pick-ups. I went to see Hole play at Lollapalooza and saw our design on the big stage and cried. A Rolling Stone magazine image of her with the guitar was next. I was happy to have given something back to music/guitar history.” – Tim
The first time she used the Mercury was at Reading Festival in August 1994.
She adorned the guitar with 4 four leaf clover stickers at the bottom of the guitar (sometime between December 1994 and January 1995). One of them peeled off and she stuck it to the top. And the volume and tone knobs were eventually gaffa taped down to stick them in place because Craig Montgomery (Court’s guitar tech) was sick of her fucking with the sound (lol).
The Mercury was absolutely trashed and thrashed on stage during 1994 and 1995. You’ve seen the videos. It was roughed up pretty badly.
By July 1995, Courtney had added a new guitar to her touring repertoire (alongside the Mercury, a Univox among others): the Fender Venus. Seeing her play both the Mercury and Venus interchangeably, it was very evident that the Fender Custom Shop had directly copied the body shape of the Mercury with their normal hockey stick headstock.
I am unsure if this was sheer laziness on Fender’s part but the guys from Mercury didn’t appreciate this – as you can imagine. I think they wanted to sue, but two guys going up against a global giant probably wouldn’t bode well for them. Plus there’s some weird law that says you cannot patent guitar body shapes or something.
By the end of the 95 Hole tour, the Mercury was officially retired. When Hole started touring in 98/99, the Fender Venus was her go-to, alongside the occasional Telecaster or her vintage Gretsch.
Tim and Danny are still friends to this very day and are in constant search for one of the original guitars to come up for sale. They have have no complete Mercury’s left. Let me know if you run across one. They are planning on building the Mercury’s again one day when they get older just for the fun of it.
See below for some other photos: Tim & Danny with one of their Mercury guitars (these examples look like they are semi hollowbody’s rather than the solid body Courtney owned.) The bottom guitar in the stack of guitars picture is an example of a guitars they were in the midst of making for Kurt.
