We went for a long walk and saw some big snake tracks! It was really pretty down by the river but we got a little lost on our way back - even though we could see the camper in the distance, we couldn’t figure out which way to get there! I had to show my humans the way! Silly humans! Woof!

And then you taste it.  I didn't want to, but you HAVE to.  This shit will rot your teeth.  I'm not joking.  Thick and viscous, the sugar inundates all in a corn-syrup funeral pyre where all things resembling fruit have vanished.  Disgusting layers of what I am guessing the mixologist behind the blending computers at this winery call *structure* cheapen and further obfuscate whatever fruit you try to decipher from the gaudy mouthfeel. Alcoholic burn plays hard into the mix, and I am sure the awkward drying out of all life and pulse and anything even resembling wine in the finish will be described on the back label as a "sense of place" and the ridiculous *legs* will be praised and highlighted, photographed through to the "amazing food and wine lifestyle experience" I'm sure this "small family winery" offers. Hair and Clothing:

“As a break from the heat, as well as a break from the habits of the local farmers, years ago I decided to wear red shorts in the field as opposed to the jeans, which are the farmers’ usual field dress. Fending off the catcalls and whistles of my fellow farmers, I told them that I wear the red shorts each April 1st as a sacrifice to the “weather gods,” and don’t take off the shorts until each Lodi farmer completes their harvest. Yeast:

“Once we bring the grapes into the building I always welcome them to their new home, thank them for thriving ephemerally and also let them know that we are grateful for them and this is what they were grown for. While I mix yeast, I don’t allow people to talk to me because yeasties (as I call them) are living organisms and I only want good vibes around them. That means I focus my good energy on them in hopes that they will manifest a thriving and healthy fermentation. On the morning a wine is being bottled, I wish it Happy Birthday and note the astrological sign under which the birthday falls in my records. I tell the wine how much “Mama” loves her, and I send her off with best wishes to make others as happy as she makes me. Every time I pitch a bucket of yeast into a fermenter to get it started, I find myself saying, “Get happy little yeasties,” trying to encourage an elegant fermentation out of them. After the tanks are inoculated, often being the first one at the winery, I will turn on Pearl Jam (something from the album Ten) and speak to each tank while it is fermenting, trying to ensure that they stay happy. Perhaps I should start to play the song “Happy” instead… Also, during bottling season we always try to avoid Mondays, with the fear of what our native “winery gnomes” may have done to the bottling line over the weekend. “Being a female winemaker, I cannot participate in the harvest ritual of shaving, and just thinking about wearing the same socks/underwear throughout harvest gives me the willies. What I learned from Lynn Penner-Ash is the elegant route of toasting the first grapes received with a bottle of Champagne. I always gather the entire team (sales/marketing included) at the ungodly hour of 5 or 6 a.m. to gather around our first bin of grapes for my harvest quote of the year and a taste of Champagne…remembering to always give a pour for Bacchus over the grapes. This year, we added the tradition of starting every processing day with the song “Troglodyte (Caveman)” by Jimmy Castor Bunch as remixed by Lo-Fidelity Allstars. One of the superstitions we have adopted at the winery is ‘dar el remojo.’ The direct translation (‘give a soaking’) doesn’t make much sense, but the idea is this: when you are lucky enough to have something good happen in your life - a good harvest or a new forklift - you share your good fortune and encourage future luck to come your way by buying burritos, donuts, or beer for your friends and/or employees. Day 9 - Sequoia Grove

The next winery on our agenda was Sequoia Grove. This was also our last winery in Napa! We were greeted by Mike, the head winemaker, Molly, the winemaker, Dean, the wine educator, and many other employees that were very warm and welcoming. 

First, Dean led us through a very educational tasting of Cabernets. He was very thorough with the history and aspects of the different vineyards and how they were reflected in the wines. We also paired the different tastes with a Cabernet to prove salty and sour pair well, but sweet does not. Do not try to eat grapes and Cabernet, it was gross.

Vineyard manager Jake, and his one-eyed dog Willie, briefly walked us through a small plot of grapes that contained Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet, tasting the grapes as we travelled through. Molly then led us through yet another tasting, this time with Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. Before we left for lunch, they gave us a goodie bag with a nice coaster, glass, and an entire bottle of wine!! The people at Sequoia Grove were not only extremely generous, but very excited that we were there visiting. 

To finish our time at Sequoia Grove, Molly, Jake, and Cameron (assistant winemaker), took us to a favorite spot of theirs - Farmstead. We had a beautiful family meal consisting of cheddar biscuits (much tastier than Red Lobster’s), warm burrata, salad of arugula, figs, Point Reyes bleu cheese, chicken with salsa verde, smoked heritage St Louis ribs, broccolini, braised heirloom beans (the best thing on the table), and finished with a cookie jar. And yes, I was very full after lunch. 

After leaving, we were due in Sonoma, so we took the back and extremely winding/narrow road up and down the mountain side. It was terrifying to say the least. We relaxed for a bit, then when to In and Out, which was my first time! To be frank, I didn’t understand the hype, the burger was just ok, and the fries were fresh, but lacked flavor. At least I can now say I’ve had it!
