Ranji Trophy 2023-24: Mumbai’s roster for the match against Andhra Pradesh now includes Shreyas Iyer

In Ahmedabad, Sarfaraz Khan and bowler Tushar Deshpande will play for India A against the England Lions, while all-arounder Shivam Dube has been called up to the Indian T20I team to play Afghanistan.

Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy match, against Andhra, is scheduled to take place at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy ground on January 12; that match will mark Shreyas Iyer’s maiden appearance in the competition in five years.

After Mumbai began the Ranji campaign with an innings victory in Bihar, Shreyas, who will not play in India’s T20I series against Afghanistan, will make sure Mumbai won’t miss Sarfaraz Khan too much.

Sarfaraz and fast bowler Tushar Deshpande will play for India A in Ahmedabad against the England Lions.

Shreyas, the mysterious batter, last appeared in a Ranji match at Nagpur during Vidarbha’s crushing of Mumbai in the 2018–19 season. Due to overseas obligations and several injury absences, he hasn’t been spotted in Mumbai’s whites for the previous five years.

Sylvester Dsouza was chosen by the Rajeev Kulkarni-led selection committee to replace Deshpande. Shivam Dube, an all-rounder, will also be missed by Mumbai as he has joined the Indian T20I team.

Tributes to Shamrao Kamble, the unsung music maestro of Hindi cine music industry, on his birth anniversary today.

Shamrao Kamble was an eminent and excellent music arranger who had worked with almost all the music directors in 60s and 70s. Basically a Harmonium player, he was also a master in organ and vibraphone playing. He was a favourite arranger of music directors Laxmikant -Pyarelal, Roshan, Rajesh Roshan, Jaidev and Sudhir Phadke. He was the melody section conductor in Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music and worked with them throughout their career. His music arrangements in films like 'Mujhe Jeene Do', 'Prem Parbat', 'Gharonda', 'Reshma aur Shera' (with Jaidev), 'Anokhi Raat' (Roshan), '’Kunwara Baap’, ‘Julie' (Rajesh Roshan) and the hit Marathi album 'Ritu Hirwa' was amazing.

He had also composed music with the veteran violinist Prabhakar Jog for the English film 'Birbal My Brother' under the name 'Shyam-Prabhakar'. We have listened to his unbeatable harmonium in the songs like 'baai mi wikat ghetala sham", 'thakale re nandalala"(‘jagachya pathivar’), "jaane kahan gayi" (‘dil apna aur preet paraai’) and organ in "yashomati maiya se bole nandalala" (‘satyam shivam sundaram’. . Very few know that Shamrao himself was a brilliant composer as well. He used to compose Bhajans and once on listening to the Bhajans he composed, music director Pyarelal asked him “Shamraoji if you can compose the tunes so nicely, why don’t you think to be a full-fledged music director for films ?” He just said “I am more interested in the Music Arrangements..” Pyarelal asked him jokingly, “so shall I use your compositions ?” smiling, within a second he said, “Pyareji, my all work is for you… you may use whenever you wish..!” I am very much sure that if Shamraoji had taken music-direction is a career, he would have definitely achieved the position in the list of most talented and successful composers in Indian music field," said Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, the ace music director.

"His knowledge and devotion towards music was so deep, that he even used to guide or suggest the top artists like Rais Khan (sitar), Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute), Shivkumar Sharma (santoor) about the playing during the recordings. He also used to express that a particular music piece would be more effective if improvised in a different manner etc. And the greatness of those artists also, who used sportingly accept Shamraoji's suggestions and appreciate the same.. This was only because they were fully aware of Shamraoji’s knowledge and capacity. And also this was the reason that we had given total freedom to him in our work also," said Pyarelal.

In his early career, Shamrao had worked as a notation-writer. He was the one who wrote down the notation for Dinanath Mangeshkar's natya sangeet (Chandrika hi janu, Vilopale madhu meelanat ya, Yuwati mana etc).

He was well-versed in western idiom too. He brought sophistication to the music pieces of Sudhir Phadke, Roshan and Jaidev. His speciality was reading the lyrics and composing music interludes to set the mood for the next stanza. His interludes for 3 stanzas used to be all different (e,g. Jo waada kiya nibhana padega). He completed Roshan's 'Anokhi Raat' in his absence when Roshan died halfway through the movie.

He assisted Rajesh Roshan in his first two movies 'Kunwara Baap' and 'Julie', and young 'Shridhar Phadke' for his 'Rutu Hirwaa' album and continued even later.

A producer once came to Jaidev asking him to score for Gharonda, but asked him to give music like R.D.Burman. Jaidev refused, but Shamrao said "You just say yes, we will see what to do". He is the one who transformed Jaidev's difficult tunes into modern rhythm and orchestration, using strings, transichord and whistle effectively. After the movie was released, Jaidev rang him up "Arre ye tune kya kar diya? My music is so successful, now everyone wants music like that. I have to attach your name to mine, too".

Shamrao was the senior partner in Shyam Kamble & Party (along with Laxmikant and Pyarelal who were kids) performing at the Ganeshotsav programmes.

Shamrao Kamble was one such soul who has contributed endlessly to the music industry. For many he was a guide and father figure in the music industry. And more than all this he was a great great human being. So modest and down to earth for all his amazing achievements..

Shamrao Kamble passed away on away on 17th October 2008 at Dombivli due to a Brain Stroke. He was 83.

Although the void created by him can never be filled, his art and work will remain in everyone’s memory eternally.

May the noble soul of Shamrao Kamble rest in eternal peace.

The Court of Appeal tore the police case against Shani Abeysekera to pieces in its bail order, calling the charges a sham designed to ‘prejudice and harm’ the star criminal investigator and former CID Chief by the ‘backers of convicted murderers.”

The Court slammed what it called “extraordinary delays” filing the complaint against Abeysekera and three junior officers who investigated the Mohammed Shiyam murder in 2013. Two witnesses in the trial came forward in 2020, to claim Abeysekera had coerced their testimony and fabricated evidence to implicate DIG Vas Gunewardane who was convicted of the murder by a High Court Trial-at-Bar. The case against Shani Abeysekera is being investigated by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) which Vas Gunewardane led before he faced trial for murder.

But the Court of Appeal in its 14 page order granting bail to Abeysekera, said the delays strongly demonstrated that”the allegations against the suspect Shani Abeysekera are a result of falsification and embellishment”, and a “creature of afterthought”.

According to the Court of Appeal, complaining about Abeysekera’s conduct during a murder investigation eight years ago cost the complaint the “benefit of the advantage of spontaneity.” The Court of Appeal said the complainants had ample time and ability to make the complaint.

The delayed complaint “smacks of the introduction of a fabricated, false version and an exaggerated account or concocted story involving a set of collaborators or conspirators to unduly cause prejudice and harm to the suspect Shani Abeysekera,” the Court of Appeal said in its order.

The CA Order, written by Justice Bandula Karunaratne, said that the statements provided by witnesses who complained against Abeysekera in 2020 are contradictory to statements they had made in 2014, when the murder probe was underway.

The Court observed that the police had made a “blatant attempt to frame allegations through fabrication of false evidence” against Abeysekera, by reporting the statements of “apparent backers and supporters or collaborators of the convicted murderers” before the Magistrate’s Court of Gampaha.

The Court of Appeal said that based on the material presented to court, no credible evidence had been provided to substantiate the position that Abeysekera had committed offences under the Penal Code, and the Offensive Weapons and Explosives Act. “No credible evidence had been brought to the attention of the Court to substantiate this position or credibly establish a semblance of a prima facie case,” the Court of Appeal said, referring to the CCD Investigation against Abeysekera.

The Court order said that while Abeysekera had been in remand custody for 10 months, there was no cogent material before Court to establish that witnesses had been intimidated by the ex-CID Director.

The order also noted that evidence had been presented to court by Abeysekera’s lawyers that his health was failing.

“Considering the totality of the material placed before us, I am of the considered view that the suspect Shani Abeysekera be enlarged on bail, subject to strict conditions imposed by this Court,” the order said.

DIG Vas Gunewardane, the convicted murderer, is a close associate of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. From other sources Tributes to Shamrao Kamble, the unsung music maestro of Hindi cine music industry, on his birth anniversary today.Shamrao Kamble  was an eminent and excellent music arranger who had worked with almost all the music directors in 60s and 70s. Basically a Harmonium player, he was also a master in organ and vibraphone playing. He was a favourite arranger of music directors Laxmikant -Pyarelal, Roshan, Rajesh Roshan, Jaidev and Sudhir Phadke. He was the melody section conductor in Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music and worked with them throughout their career. His music arrangements in films like 'Mujhe Jeene Do', 'Prem Parbat', 'Gharonda', 'Reshma aur Shera' (with Jaidev), 'Anokhi Raat' (Roshan), '’Kunwara Baap’, ‘Julie' (Rajesh Roshan) and the hit Marathi album 'Ritu Hirwa' was amazing.He had also composed music with the veteran violinist Prabhakar Jog for the English film 'Birbal My Brother' under the name 'Shyam-Prabhakar'. We have listened to his unbeatable harmonium in the songs like 'baai mi wikat ghetala sham", 'thakale re nandalala"(‘jagachya pathivar’), "jaane kahan gayi" (‘dil apna aur preet paraai’) and organ in "yashomati maiya se bole nandalala" (‘satyam shivam sundaram’. .Very few know that Shamrao himself was a brilliant composer as well. He used to compose Bhajans and once on listening to the Bhajans he composed, music director Pyarelal asked him “Shamraoji if you can compose the tunes so nicely, why don’t you think to be a full-fledged music director for films ?” He just said “I am more interested in the Music Arrangements..” Pyarelal asked him jokingly, “so shall I use your compositions ?” smiling, within a second he said, “Pyareji, my all work is for you… you may use whenever you wish..!” I am very much sure that if Shamraoji had taken music-direction is a career, he would have definitely achieved the position in the list of most talented and successful composers in Indian music field," said Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, the ace music director."His knowledge and devotion towards music was so deep, that he even used to guide or suggest the top artists like Rais Khan (sitar), Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute), Shivkumar Sharma (santoor) about the playing during the recordings. He also used to express that a particular music piece would be more effective if improvised in a different manner etc. And the greatness of those artists also, who used sportingly accept Shamraoji's suggestions and appreciate the same.. This was only because they were fully aware of Shamraoji’s knowledge and capacity.  And also this was the reason that we had given total freedom to him in our work also," said Pyarelal.In his early career, Shamrao had worked as a notation-writer. He was the one who wrote down the notation for Dinanath Mangeshkar's natya sangeet (Chandrika hi janu, Vilopale madhu meelanat ya, Yuwati mana etc).He was well-versed in western idiom too. He brought sophistication to the music pieces of Sudhir Phadke, Roshan and Jaidev. His speciality was reading the lyrics and composing music interludes to set the mood for the next stanza. His interludes for 3 stanzas used to be all different (e,g. Jo waada kiya nibhana padega). He completed Roshan's 'Anokhi Raat' in his absence when Roshan died halfway through the movie.He assisted Rajesh Roshan in his first two movies 'Kunwara Baap' and 'Julie', and young 'Shridhar Phadke' for his 'Rutu Hirwaa' album and continued even later.A producer once came to Jaidev asking him to score for Gharonda, but asked him to give music like R.D.Burman. Jaidev refused, but Shamrao said "You just say yes, we will see what to do". He is the one who transformed Jaidev's difficult tunes into modern rhythm and orchestration, using strings, transichord and whistle effectively. After the movie was released, Jaidev rang him up "Arre ye tune kya kar diya? My music is so successful, now everyone wants music like that. I have to attach your name to mine, too".Shamrao was the senior partner in Shyam Kamble & Party (along with Laxmikant and Pyarelal who were kids) performing at the Ganeshotsav programmes. Shamrao Kamble was one such soul who has contributed endlessly to the music industry. For many he was a guide and father figure in the music industry. And more than all this he was a great great human being. So modest and down to earth for all his amazing achievements..Shamrao Kamble passed away on away on 17th October 2008 at Dombivli due to a Brain Stroke. So Baba asked for and took Dakshina, and while the devotees took leave, He gave Udi as Prasad, besmeared some of it on the Bhaktas' foreheads and placed His boon-conferring hand on their heads. When Baba was in a cheerful mood, He used to sing merrily. One such song was about Udi. The burden of the Udi song was this,"Oh, playful Rama, come, come, and bring with you sacks of Udi." Baba used to sing in very clear and sweet tones.

 Places to see in Shirdi

 Baba's Sacred Body has been laid to eternal rest (Samadhi) here. The edifice of this main Mandir (Temple) was constructed with Baba's blessing, by Shri Gopalrao Butti of Nagpur, an ardent devotee of Baba. It is therefore also  known as "Butti Wada". Baba's Beautiful lifesize idol is installed near His chennai to shirdi flight packages  Samadhi in this shrine. All rituals, comprising Pooja, Abhishek and daily four Aaratis, are performed here. This is the place where sacred body of Baba is resting in Samadhi. Shri Gopalrao Butty of Nagpur constructed this building, This place is also known as 'Butty Wada'.  This was Baba's abode (located within Samadhi Mandir Complex) continuously for sixty years till He took Samadhi. Baba blessed innumeranble devotees here. The Sheela (Stone), on which Baba used to sit, is located in Dwarkamai. The sacred fire (Dhuni) lit by Baba is also eternally burning here. Baba used to give Sacred Udi (Ash) from this Dhuni to His devotees to fulfil their wishes. Even now, Udi distributed to devotees is from this Dhuni. Baba used to cook food here distribute it among His devotees.

 Chavadi is located nearby, on the eastern side of Samadhi Mandir Complex. On every alternate day, Baba used to proceed in Procession from Dwarkamai to Chavadi at night and sleep there.

 Baba was first spotted when he was a lad of sixteen. Baba used to refer to this spot as His Guru's (Mentor's) location. The famous Margosa (Neem) tree, refered to in Shree Sai Satcharitra stands here. It is the experience of devotee that they burn incense here on Thursday and Fridays, their ailments get cured. This is the place where Baba first appeared to the world as boy of 16 years and this place    is supposed to be Baba's Gurusthan. The famous Margosa (Neem) tree is here which has a reference in "Sai Sat-Charitra".

 This is the place where Shri Sai Baba used to go for a stroll. Nandadeep (oil flame) is kept constantly burning near  the Pimple   tree planted by Shri Sai Baba himself. There is also Datta Mandir in this garden and Shri Sai Baba's beloved horse 'Shamkarna' (Sham Sundar) is taking Eternal rest here. There is also a well here called as 'Baba's Shirdi'.

 Valuable things used by Baba during his time are drinking vessel (Tumbler), Baba's Paduka (footprints), Baba's Satka, Grinder, Gramophones, Bowl of Hukka, Horse bridle-habiliments, the kaphani and Sandals worn by  Shri Sai Baba and the original photographs of Lord Sai. All these valuable things are kept in the museum Hall for Sai devotees. This is the place where sacred body of Baba is resting in Samadhi.
