Creator Spotlight: @velinxi
Hello! I’m Xiao Tong Kong, better known as “Velinxi.” I’m the creator of the webcomic Countdown to Countdown and have been doing freelance artwork since I was a teenager. I love telling stories with my illustrations! Tumblr was where I first got my start as an artist, specifically a small fandom artist as a hobby… and now I’m somehow here! When I’m not trying my best to stay awake in front of my tablets, I’m usually cooking, gaming, or sleeping. Sometimes all three, in my dreams.
Check out our interview with Velinxi below!
Did you originally have a background in art? If not, how did you start?
Yeah! I’ve basically been on track to become an artist since I was a child. I went to a middle school with an emphasis on arts and a high school specializing in it. I went to SVA briefly for computer arts but dropped out to pursue freelance and webcomics after my first year.
Over the years as an artist, what or who were your biggest inspirations behind your creativity?
My biggest inspirations growing up were Yuumei and Shilin Huang, two titans on DeviantArt back in the day. They still inspire me today, but the list of inspirations has grown exponentially over the years, including artists, movies, entire art movements, etc.
What was your thought process behind the creation of your webcomic, Countdown to Countdown?
Well, Countdown to Countdown started as a passion project back when I was 15, in high school, and pretty depressed. I just wanted to draw whatever story I thought was cool, inspired by my favorite media at the time. There was a very loose beginning and outline, but I was truly just writing as I drew the story. That’s why I had to stop the comic in 2018 and restart from scratch the year after. Now, the story has a set story and a clear outline. It still has similar roots, characters, and themes of neglect, abuse, and escape—but I think the story is a lot easier to follow now. It’s got an artstyle I can actually keep up with in the long run. The origin of why CTC exists also remains the same: I simply wanted to make a story I wanted to read for myself. Which happens to be about two dumb boys with superpowers navigating a hostile world that wants them dead or caged—together.
Have you ever had an art block? If so, how did you overcome it?
Oh, all the time. It’s part of the process. Personally, though—I just have to draw through it. Every month on my Patreon, I have my patrons vote on a theme I have to draw by the end of the month, and I try my best to make it as interesting as possible. I draw quite a few—tens even, of doodles or compositions for each of these themes to try to make something that tells a story while still being aesthetically pleasing and clear. I think pushing myself like this helps with art block, really. I also do remember to take breaks and simply consume other media I like! It gets the inspiration juices flowing.
Advice you would give to an aspiring creator?
If you do one—your first webcomic should be a short, fun, messy thing. It’s not often you can get it right the first time, but you’ll certainly learn a lot through sheer experience. This goes for a lot of things in art, to be honest.
What is a medium that you have always been intrigued by but would never use yourself?
3D Animation. I briefly learned it at SVA, and I think that’s enough of that tech for me. I accept that there are some things that are truly beautiful if done right, and I am too simple and lazy for it.
What is your goal for the rest of this year?
Get Countdown to Countdown book 2 finished! And live HAHA
Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?
@yuumei-art on Tumblr, still! They’ve been a huge inspiration for digital artists and storytellers online for years. I have no doubt that many digital artists of my generation have been influenced by them, and they’re still here, making beautiful art and stories. It’s a thing to behold.
Thanks for stopping by, Velinxi! If you haven’t seen her Meet the Artist piece, be sure to check it out here. You can also follow her for more amazing art over at her Tumblr, @velinxi!

Another ask separate from my rq, are there any artists or other influences that have inspired your art that you'd like to share?
ohh boy, this is definitely a question I can ramble about (apologies in advance for the long text!!)
Short Answer (a list of lasting artistic influences):
Movies/animanga: How to Train Your Dragon, Avatar (not ATLA, sorry) , Evangelion, Pinch Point (by VLANCAT), Land of the Lustrous, Tower of God, CSM, Tokyo Ghoul, 86 EIGHTY-SIX
Games: Arknights, Cytus II (rip art team..), Honkai Impact 3rd, Destiny 2
artists/illustrators/animators: Shilin, Ishida Sui, yasutatsu, WOOMA, par0llel, suzumesakiii, Dino_illus, liduke, ligton1225, Curie Lu, 96yottea, many many others... I could write nearly every Arknights illustrator as well and still not be satisfied ..
Music: classical music, Ado, KIVA, Eve (the MVs..!), i think i need to stop listing things now because it'll never end
Long Answer (rambling):
when it comes to art, i am definitely inspired by other visual artists, but i am also very inspired by the world around me as well as creators of other types of media. i'm extremely lucky to have grown up in a lively, diverse city with a wonderfully creative family, so the art and music of my family and environment plays a large part in my artistic preferences!! Something I have really wanted to integrate more deeply into my art is the contrast between new and old, grungy and refined... it reflects a lot of the conflicts that make up what I consider to be "me." Also, I just really like the vibe of chaotic industrial zones and rusty metal combined with a shining city in the distance, lol.
Regarding particularly influential media: pretty much anyone who's taken a glance at my blog will know immediately that Arknights is one of my biggest influences. it's basically all i draw nowadays... whenever I'm not thinking about Responsibilities and Adult Life i'm usually thinking about either Arknights or Ado (<3).
before Arknights, I spent a long time drawing fanart and fan-characters inspired by How to Train Your Dragon. Both the visual and musical aspects of that series still have a very dear place in my heart, even if I don't engage much with the community anymore. I actually only really started drawing not-dragons about 3 or 4 years ago at this point. Something I have been thinking about a lot recently is how I can go back to drawing more creatures alongside my humanoid subjects, since it's not something I've done very much recently.
Gradually I began to find more friends in the art community, and I think I'm very influenced by those people as well! It isn't a competition, of course, but being around people who are also pushing to improve is a big motivator when I am feeling low on passion. "I want to stand together with them at the top of world one day", is how I often feel. I really want to work on a collaborative project with other artists someday as well. Trying to build my skill is partially because I want to better express my ideas, but also because I want to inspire and be inspired by other creators. :D I think my art has been evolving at a pretty good pace recently because of these motivators.. the friends and regulars (including you, burstfoot!!) that visit my blog regularly here really motivate me too!!
and lastly, I'm at a point in my life where I feel that if I can't get this art thing off the ground, I will probably have to give up on pursuing it properly soon... so it's partially desperation that is inspiring me to change and try new ways of expression as well :,]
[ thank you for the ask!! ]

July 16 - National Palace Museum and Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence
The National Palace Museum contains China’s most precious artifacts. During the 20th century, China was involved in many wars, including civil wars, sino-japanese wars, and world wars. The government wanted to keep these artifacts safe, so they were boxed up and moved around to different locations throughout the first half of the 20th century. Eventually, these artifacts were shipped to Taiwan during war times. The National Palace Museum was founded and opened to the public in 1965. There are so many artifacts that the museum rotates the items every 3 months. The museum has 3 floors of artifacts. They are organized a little bit by time period and you can tell by the type of material and designs of the artifacts. All of these artifacts are priceless. We took a look at this one blue-ish ceramic bowl. It was pretty basic looking and if it didn’t have any history attached to it, I would pay 10 USD for it at Goodwill. It is worth 36 million USD. It was interesting to see the influences of each dynasty on these pieces. It’s crazy how hundreds of years of history can be squished into an hour or two walking around a museum.
We also visited the Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence. Yesterday, we visited his memorial. He was the first president of Taiwan, fleeing to Taiwan after losing the Civil War in China. He positioned himself as a savior and a powerful leader. The people around him respected him and were a necessary proponent of his success. His residence had a beautiful garden and a large house, I assume it was especially large for the time period. This house welcomed many famous people and many important political conversations took place within those walls. I particularly want to draw attention to his wife, Soong Mei-ling. She knew how to play politics and would join Chiang in important conversations with guests. She grew up in the US and went to Wellesley College majoring in literature. She was a fan of the fine arts, an avid painter, writer, reader, and also enjoyed movies and music. Chiang also appreciated these and was known to always have a book on hand. Chiang died in 1975 in this house, surrounded by family and friends. Soong Mei-ling passed away in 2003 in New York City.
Reflection
There seems to be a divide within the people living in Taiwan. Part of this divide stems from Chiang Kai-shek. Some people love him and associate him with freedom and democracy. They see him as a savior because of his efforts against communism in China. Others see him as an invader and authoritarian leader that highly encourages others to adopt his ways. I think that even though everyone lives in Taiwan, some also associate themselves with their Chinese heritage, while others do not. The National Palace Museum, for example, is more like a museum for Chinese culture instead of Taiwanese culture, despite the fact that all of the artifacts belong to Taiwan.

July 16th - National Palace Museum and Chiang Kai Shek Shilin Residence
Today, I woke up early and couldn’t go back to sleep. Of course, I still had clothes to dry because the dryer did not dry my clothes last night. I went back to the laundry room and put my clothes in for another two hours to see if that would finally do the trick (it did not, they are still wet). Anyway, I decided it was time to reconnect with nature after the tragedies I kept experiencing in the laundry department. I went to a bakery close to the hotel, got a croissant, sat at a park and contemplated life. We had an activity pretty early this morning, so I went back to the room and got ready for the day. We started with the National Palace Museum. The artifacts were all super beautiful. It was crazy to see how much some of them would sell for. One tiny teacup would go for $38 million US dollars. Next, we got some all you can eat BBQ, which was very exciting. Lastly, we visited the Chiang Kai-Shek Residence and honestly, I expected more. From seeing extremely extravagant memorial hall the day before, his house was actually quaint compared to it. It was still large and ornately decorated, but I was expecting hundreds of rooms and golden doors. We came back to the hotel after this and I am working on the dinner situation.
Academic Reflection
The reading today is based on the National Palace Museum. The construction is a bit controversial because of the narrative that can be spun by selecting specific artifacts and exhibits to paint a picture of history that they want to portray. Furthermore, the collection of antiques and arts traditionally represents sovereignty, which is something a bit controversial. When the museum was built, it had to represent a modern republican status, but still maintain its Chinese lineage. The main issue is the fight for sovereignty between Taiwan and China. It will most likely remain a complicated issue for years to come. The museum was extremely beautiful and it was impossible to tell this convoluted backstory surrounded it. Some of the most interesting things I learned were that jade and gold almost always go together and while gold represents wealth, jade represents class. Another rather sad fact was that artists would be commissioned to create these insanely complex pieces and their lives and families lives would be threatened if they were not completed within a specific amount of time. Lastly, women were expected to die with their husbands and would often commit suicide to go into the grave with them.

Bamboo dining table
The surface of the bamboo table is covered with environmentally friendly UV varnish, which is more wear-resistant and maintains the natural bamboo texture. Four table corner edges are designed with rounding for safety's sake to avoid children bumping. With tabletop inverted side processing, the appearance line looks perfect! The table legs with character eight shape use metal accessories to connect with the tabletop, so the structure is more stable, and the lines are more smooth, which makes the table look taller.

ANCIENT Opera Singer — Guo Shilin
“An unexplainable yearning.”
Tumblr media
DETAILS.
This is set within the Republican Era, 1911 to 1949, of China. During this time, a number of western-centric plays took place and soon after, Chinese playwrights began to imitate this form. Despite the rise of Yue opera, this setting is looking more at Peking opera troupes. I did try to research if there was a prominent stigma behind homosexuality during this time but there was very little information that I could go off of. While making Shilin, I'd like to assume that there is a prominent stigma going on about men loving men.
Inspired by Winter Begonia — a Chinese web drama adapted from a popular Boys' Love (BL) web novel. It's a 49-episode series relating to subtle romance and the traditional culture of Peking Opera during the 1930s.
Sadly, I have not finished watching it because I get sidetracked easily. But, from what I have watched, it is a beautiful series that I would easily recommend for drama connoisseurs.
BACKGROUND.
From the moment Shilin entered this world, his trajectory was one of ascent. His love for the arts ignited when his primary teacher introduced him to the Opera House—an enchanting realm seemingly reserved for those beyond the grasp of ordinary folks who struggled to secure a daily meal. Undeterred by these barriers, Shilin, fueled by a natural talent for singing, harbored an earnest desire to grace the stage with his abilities.
However, his parents, unmoved by his aspirations, urged Shilin to abandon what they deemed a frivolous dream. Undaunted, Shilin tenaciously saved every penny until he amassed enough to enroll in opera classes in Tianjin. Despite facing skepticism, Shilin's dedication bore fruit within the hallowed halls of the opera house. In the eyes of those who had immersed themselves in the art for years, he was a prodigy. In a mere three years, Shilin mastered the intricacies of weapon wielding, the art of opera singing, and the challenge of donning elaborate costumes.
Cutting ties with his parents, Shilin foresaw that his newfound fame would only invite their opportunistic pleas for financial support. His performances drew crowds eager to witness his reenactments of famous tales, and within the mesmerizing world of the Opera House, Shilin had become a luminary—a testament to the unwavering pursuit of his once-dismissed dreams.
SYPNOSIS.
Opera houses reign prominently among entertainment and performances within China. Attendees would come from all around to catch a glimpse of the magnificence and star among opera singers. Shilin had performed for a variety of audiences yet none could compare to that night. He'd like to blame you for being his primary distraction that night. You and those eyes that looked at him with such adoration. His performance became a splendor that night within your eyes.
GREETING.
In the midst of the Republican Era, a recently inaugurated opera house graced mainland China. Passersby marveled at the majestic doors, pondering about the enchanting voice that resonated within. It became a distinguished privilege for men to witness the opulent performances unfolding within the venue. Attendees were welcomed to luxuriate in velvet chairs, converse with unfamiliar faces, raise glasses in admiration, and eagerly stir encores. The desire to witness such magnificence was a dream for many.
As the lights dimmed and spectators settled into their seats on the second floor, a figure adorned in resplendent attire emerged from behind silken curtains. A hushed silence pervaded the atmosphere, and voices hitched in anticipation. The voice that ensnared the hearts of millions possessed an aura reminiscent of a deity. The audience fell under the spell of Shilin, the heartthrob of the opera troupe.
Maintaining an air of poise on stage, Shilin enacted the poignant tale of 'Madame White Snake,' seamlessly conveying a range of emotions. It felt uncannily authentic how effortlessly Shilin embodied his role—a being yearning to experience human love. As the opera approached its conclusion, Shilin's gaze traversed from one row to another until it rested upon your figure. In those final moments, his voice quivered with each pronounced word. Even Shilin himself was uncertain about the inexplicable longing that gripped him—a peculiar yearning for an unknown admirer in the audience.
RESPONSE EX.
Suddenly, a deep fiery blush filled his entire face to the brim unlike the previous one. It was clearly due to Shilin's words after knowing he was caught staring intensely all throughout the performances.
“You...” His voice faded out as he stepped back briefly to bury his red face in his strong hands. “I don't know whether I should be devastated that you of all people would notice such a thing... no less whilst you were performing.”
Shilin's lips curved into a mischievous grin as he witnessed the man's sudden display of emotions. The man's reddened face was quite comical, as he attempted to conceal his blush. Shilin let out a small chuckle as he observed the man's comical reaction to being found out.
“Now now, don't be shy,” Shilin murmured, his voice gaining an underlying flirtatious tone, “there is nothing wrong with gazing at me with all those passionate eyes. I quite like the attention you display for my persona.”

Today I am going to write about a art cafe that I went to yesterday. I was too tired to write last night. Yesterday I went to Lutetia art cafe in Shilin, Taiwan and it’s a small but spacey and comfortable little cafe. Lutetia houses art exhibits of local Taiwan and foreign artists. I came to Lutetia probably twice and the two times I saw two different exhibits.
The two exhibits I saw at Lutetia were flowing acrylic and abstract acrylic flowers. I am not sure if I am allowed to post photos of the paintings so it’s safer that I don’t post them. Both exhibits were nature themes and the flowing acrylic was painted by a Taiwanese painter named Clarabell. I chatted with Clarabell a little bit and she told me that she poured the acrylic as she turns the canvas. So most of her paintings are circular.
Clara bell’s exhibit was 5 months ago and this month Lutetia has a new exhibit called “All Our Homes” by Pallavi Saxena. Pallavi’s show is about abstract flowers inspired by daily life. Pallavi’s flowers are not regular flower shapes they are oval with openings in the middle. One of the flowers looks like it has a tongue sticking out, but the tongue shape thing is actually a loose petal. My cartoonistic imagination told me it was a tongue LOL.

Taipei
Tumblr media
Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a bustling metropolis that offers an incredible mix of traditional and modern culture. The city is full of skyscrapers, night markets, temples, hot springs, and stunning natural scenery. It’s a great place to explore if you’re looking for an unforgettable travel experience.
History and Culture
Taipei has a rich cultural and historical background that’s influenced by the various ethnic groups that have inhabited the island over the centuries. It was founded in the early 18th century and was originally known as Taipei City, which means “north of Taiwan”. The city has been shaped by its history and its architecture reflects this with buildings that mix traditional Chinese and Japanese styles with modern designs.
The National Palace Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about Taiwanese history and culture. It’s home to over 700,000 artifacts, including calligraphy, paintings, antiques, and other works of art. The museum is one of the most visited cultural attractions in Taiwan and is considered one of the finest museums in the world.
Another important site in Taipei is the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, which was built in honor of the former President of the Republic of China. The hall is home to his bronze statue, which sits atop a staircase that leads up to the main building. Its white edifice and blue-tiled roof represent the ideals of the government – the roof being blue to represent the people and the white walls representing government officials.
The Taiwanese are known for their love of night markets and Taipei has plenty of them to explore. The most famous night market in the city is the Shilin Night Market, which features hundreds of food stalls, shops, and vendors selling everything from street food to traditional Taiwanese handicrafts.
Nature and Adventure
Taipei is known for its beautiful natural scenery, and there are many places to explore outside the city. One of the most popular destinations is Yangmingshan National Park, which offers stunning views of volcanic mountains, hot springs, and hiking trails that lead to breathtaking views.
Beitou is another popular destination for nature lovers, featuring hot springs and thermal baths that are powered by geothermal energy. The area has several public hot springs and offers incredible panoramic views of the city.
Food
Taipei is a food lover’s paradise, with a wide variety of cuisines to choose from. The city is famous for its street food, which can be found at the many night markets throughout Taipei.
Some of the most popular Taiwanese dishes include beef noodle soup, braised pork rice, and stinky tofu. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try some of their more exotic offerings, like chicken feet or pig’s blood cake.
If you’re looking for a fine dining experience, Taipei has plenty of options as well. The city has a number of Michelin-starred restaurants, including RAW, which serves contemporary Taiwanese cuisine.
Shopping
Taipei is a shopper’s paradise, with a number of malls, boutiques, and markets throughout the city. One of the most popular shopping districts is Ximending, which is considered the “Harajuku of Taipei”. This pedestrian-only shopping area features a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options.
Another popular shopping destination is Taipei 101, which was once the world’s tallest building. The mall inside Taipei 101 features high-end international brands and luxury goods.
Nightlife
Taipei has a thriving nightlife scene, with plenty of bars, nightclubs, and live music venues to choose from. The city’s main nightlife district is Zhongxiao Dunhua, which is home to a number of trendy bars and clubs.
If you’re looking for live music, you can head to The Wall Live House, which is considered one of the best music venues in the city. It hosts both international and local musicians and has a reputation for being a great place to see emerging artists.
Conclusion
Taipei is an incredible city that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, nature, food, shopping, or nightlife, Taipei has it all. The city’s blend of old and new, traditional and modern, makes it a truly unique travel destination that’s well worth a visit.
