NJPW Presenta CMLL Fantasticamania 2020 Night 7 - 1/19/2020; KENTA, Jay, Ospreay, ELP at ROH Supercard Of Honor XIV on 4/4/2020; Rocky Romero in Black Label Pro 1/18/2020
The tour resumed for its final two shows today, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. Two title matches, as well as the annual tribute match to Victor Mar Manuel, Black Cat, took place on this show.
Black Cat Memorial Match: Caristico, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tiger Mask IV d. Negro Casas, Euforia & Barbaro Cavernario (Tanahashi > Casas, High Fly Flow, 11:23)
The pre-main ceremony featured not only Black Cat’s widow, but his cousin Juan Mar Manuel, and his nephew, Scandalo. Caristico made a challenge to Barbaro Cavernario, to also make their title match tomorrow a mask v. hair match. Considering Stuka v. Okumura turned out to not be a mask v. hair match (but did become a title match after all), I wouldn’t hold your breath. Mask/Hair challenges get made all the time in lucha, oftentimes not amounting to anything. If tomorrow’s main event does become mask v. hair, I will be very surprised.
Los Hermanos Chavez + Titan beat the Dinamitas in the final prelude match for their title match tomorrow. This really is one match where I can’t tell which way it will go, and we may see a title change tomorrow. They have done a very good job of building to this match all tour.
El Desperado, no matter what mask he wears, continues to be a nemesis for Young Lions everywhere.
Several NJPW wrestlers have been announced for Ring Of Honor’s Supercard of Honor XIV, during Wrestlemania Weekend, on 4/4/2020 in Lakeland, FL, 45 minutes away from actual Tampa. Announced so far have been KENTA, Jay White, Will Ospreay and El Phantasmo. No word on what they may be doing as yet.
The upshot here, is that on the surface, there still continues to be some sort of relationship between NJPW and ROH. This, despite there being no Honor Rising shows on the schedule this year, and the heavy discussion we all everyone had around Wrestle Kingdom and whether or not the future lay with AEW. All that, in addition to NJPW Of America being formed. Considering there was virtually no NJPW involvement with ROH post-G1 Supercard (indeed, last year’s War Of The Worlds tour was with CMLL, not NJPW), up to and including Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr. both flat out saying they would not be returning, it looked doubtful. For that matter, the health and viability of ROH itself looked doubtful for a lot of 2019. And yet, here we are.
We’ll see if any more NJPW talents will be named for this show, or if this even means anything long-term.
Last night in Crown Point, Indiana, Rocky Romero took part in Black Label Pro’s Nobody Puts BLP In A Corner event (the name itself being a bit of an inside joke, after the original name, Crown Point Jewel, got them a C&D letter from WWE). This was the same promotion near me that hosted Ren Narita back in November, however I was not able to attend this one sadly. Rocky defeated long-time Chikara veteran Ophidian at the event, in addition to holding a day-long seminar for wrestlers before the show.
The tour finale is tomorrow, with two title matches, and will be live on NJPWWorld.
- 1/20/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Fuego & Ryusuke Taguchi v. Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI [SZKG]
Tiger Mask IV v. Tiger
Flyer, Audaz & Guerrero Maya Jr. v. Euforia, Luciferno & Namajague
Tiger Mask, Taguchi & Audaz vs. Gedo, Ishimori & Templario
Audaz/Templario are certainly more exciting midcard guys than last years group of Drone/Disturbio/Puma/Fuego, no offense to those 4 men. They just weren’t doing all that much then and continue to be sorta irrelevant except Puma who has left CMLL to get more to do.
Can’t really say I understand NGD being split up on this card, but oh well. This match should be fun, but mostly to see Forastero locking up with Liger. Titan/Flyer fighting Taichi/Kanemaru should be good too, but isn’t as exciting.
Atlantis & Atlantis Jr. vs. Okumura & Sanson
What? This is a weird tape debut for Atlantis Jr. I don’t get why Sanson is teaming with Okumura. They should have swapped one of them out for a better tag partner, but oh well.
Angel de Oro/Dragon Lee/Mistico vs. Cuatrero/Gran Guerrero/Ultimo Guerrero
Should be fun, brothers with the 3rd members in Angel de Oro and Cuatrero who of course kicked off their great 2018 feud here at FantasticaMania last year. This time of course Angel de Oro is maskless thanks to Cuatrero. Raijin
Raijin(Sho), Fujin(Yoh), Henare, Kojima vs. Los Ingobernables(Shingo, Bushi, Naito & Terrible)
This should be fun. I’d probably prefer Rush to Terrible as Rush had this cool brother vibe. I hope Terrible has the same chemistry, but perhaps cool uncle? Sho/Yoh seem to be using their CMLL names for this show, but their gimmick wasn’t all that different. Wish Rocky was in this match instead of Kojima or Henare, but oh well. This match is a little too NJPW too for my tastes.
Kushida, Soberano Jr. & Volador Jr. vs. Namajague(Desperado), Barbaro Cavernario & Caristico
This should be fun. Kushida announced that once January 31st comes around he is done with NJPW. So strangely enough some of his last matches with the company will take place on this tour. Also of note is that Desperado will be using his CMLL name as well. I don’t know if he will use his old mask or if he will use a Namajague like design for his Despy mask.
January 16th
Kushida, Taguchi & Titan vs. Gedo, Ishimori & Forastero
Forastero/Kushida and Titan/Ishimori are both exciting pairings, hopefully they are the focus of this opener.
Raijin(Sho) & Fujin(Yoh) vs. Shingo & Bushi
Hurray Mexico? I don’t really like this... on a FantasticaMania card.
Audaz, Soberano Jr. & Angel de Oro vs. Namajague(Desperado), Okumura & Barbaro Cavernario
Should be fun and a nice treat to see Okumura teaming with one of the men he helped mentor on excursion. A good use of these talents.
Henare & Kojima vs. Naito & Terrible
I like one of these teams, I’d hope that team would dominate team NJPW.
Tiger Mask, Jushin Thunder Liger & Caristico vs. Templario, Gran Guerrero & Ultimo Guerrero
Team masked icons vs. Los Guerreros Laguneros sound great on paper, but at the same time Liger/Tiger Mask aren’t as spry as they use to be. If anyone can carry a match the Los Guerreros Laguneros guys can.
Atlantis Jr. & Atlantis vs. Cuatrero & Sanson, in a 1st round family tournament match
They did this last year and it was fun, I’d assume the same for this year too. Though it seems pretty obvious Atlantis & Jr. will win or be beat in the finals. Since Atlantis Jr. is making his debut on this tour. Makes a little more sense now that this wasn’t the debut match for Atlantis Jr.
Dragon Lee & Mistico vs. Flyer & Volador Jr., in a 1st round family tournament match
Should also be a good match. Flyer/Volador Jr. could actually win this. They did after all win the Gran Alternative Tag Tournament in 2018, which is a bigger deal than this just established family tournament. Them going on too would free up Dragon Lee and Mistico for bigger spots in following days.
January 18th
Family Tournament Semi-Finals
Can’t say too much about this. I’d assume Mistico/Lee vs. Atlantis/Jr., but who knows. It’ll be a good final regardless as all 8 talents it could be are good. Well except maybe Jr., who is an unknown at the moment. Winner here will take on Gran Guerrero/Ultimo Guerrero who won last years. Making it seem even more likely the Atlantis team will go on since Ultimo Guerrero and Atlantis are arguably each others greatest rivals.
Soberano Jr. vs. Barbaro Cavernario in a special 60 minute time limit singles match
Likely match of the show and could be match of the tour. These guys have had great matches before, so they’ll likely do it again here. I’d like to see just how long these two could go.
Raijin(Sho), Fujin(Yoh), Henare, Kojima vs. Los Ingobernables(Shingo, Bushi, Naito & Terrible) in the Black Cat Memorial Match
Should be fun, but seems like lots of NJPW talent still. Would be more fun overall if it was Rush, even if I do like Terrible.
January 20th
Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero vs. XXX & XXX Family Tournament Finals
I have confidence in the Guerreros regardless of who they face, but as noted above, Atlantis and Atlantis Jr. seem the most likely.
Kojima vs. Terrible
Fuck Kojima. Not to be blunt, but we got a Kojima singles match last year. I’d rather see Terrible fight someone like Suzuki/Goto/Ishii literally anyone else on the roster in a singles match. This is legit one of the most boring NJPW names you could give a singles match vs. a CMLL talent in 2018. I feel sorry for Rush last year and I feel sorry again for Terrible this year.
Raijin(Sho), Fujin(Yoh) & Henare vs. Shingo, Bushi & Naito
Where’s the lucha? This is the main event to a night of FantasticaMania? Okay... I guess? A bit disappointing.
January 21st
Audaz & Flyer vs. Templario & Barbaro Cavernario
Great opener, think these guy could have a fantastic match. With Audaz/Templario fighting so much here, hopefully we get a good feud out of this. Something that sorta was stop and go in 2018.
Atlantis Jr. vs. Okumura
Atlantis Jr. is an unknown, but look for Okumura to stooge for him here.
Raijin(Sho), Fujin(Yoh), Henare, Kojima vs. Los Ingobernables(Shingo, Bushi, Naito & Terrible)
We don’t need this match... this often.
NGD(Sanson, Cuatrero & Forastero) (c) Angel de Oro, Titan & Atlantis for the Mexican National Trios Championships
Should be a good match and the challenging team are credible threats. I know Atlantis seems like he may be past holding gold, but with a trios belt he could easily work light and let Titan/Angel de Oro carry the reign. I imagine this match will deliver like the NGD defense from this last Friday.
Soberano Jr., Dragon Lee & Mistico vs. Namajague(Desperado), Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero
Again Dragon Lee is facing Despy, so perhaps a mask match being set up isn’t so wild. This match has plenty of promise and will hopefully live up to that promise. Could be the best match of the night.
Dragon George & Sweet Gorilla Maruyama vs. Gypsum mask & Cockroach Mask in a "Papa bad guys champion" Special Tag Match
I have no idea what the fuck this is. I’m all for a good joke, but seems oddly placed as the semi-main of the final night.
Volador Jr. vs. Caristico in a 60 minute time limit match
Ehhh... I have confidence that these two can have a good match, but this isn’t all that exciting of a match to end it on. I hope both guys have planned some new shit and this isn’t just a match they have had a million times, but I fear it being more the latter than an exciting opening for them to reinvent the wheel.

NJPW Presenta CMLL Fantasticamania 2020 Night 8 - 1/20/2020
The final show of this year’s edition of Fantasticamania has come and gone, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. The featured matches were two title matches built through the tour, as well as an oddball singles match.
The tour is over, and no titles changed hands once again. Despite looking likely NGD might drop theirs, but such as it is. The ending finale had everyone in the ring (bar Ingobernables) celebrating another successful Fantasticamania. This really is one of the most fun tours of the NJPW calendar. The two title matches today are worth a watch, as is the LIJ v. Dulce/Tana/Uemura match.
Tiger Mask v. Tiger was... OK, I guess? Kanemaru proved once again he is one of the laziest workers in NJPW. And with this, El Desperado gets to put Namajague in mothballs once more, at least, until next Fantasticamania.
The next few shows are interesting, as NJPW will be running two tours at once. The New Beginning in USA tour starts this coming Friday night in St. Petersburg, FL, while Saturday will see the start of the Road to the New Beginning in Japan. Neither show will be shown live on NJPWWorld. Indeed, the next live show will be the first night of The New Beginning in Sapporo on 2/1/2020. The USA shows may show up on tape delay at some point.

Omega, KUSHIDA Leaving NJPW; Iizuka Retiring; Ibushi Out Next Tour; Full Fantasticamania, New Beginning Cards Announced
Strong Style Story Podcast Episode 48 on Pro Wrestling Only
New Japan Pro Wrestling just got done with a press conference, in which Fantasticamania tour cards were announced (Just in time for us to release a podcast about it without them, see above or below) as well as feature matches for The New Beginning tour.
However, that seems to pale right now to the announcements at the press conference, as well as one released by Tokyo Sports. Let’s get to those:
Tokyo Sports has published a feature story saying Kenny Omega is leaving NJPW. Now mind you, some of the language in Kenny’s statement to the press seems really worked, and is similar to when he took a few months away from New Japan following WK11. The article points out that his only real options are WWE or All Elite Wrestling. AEW holds a press conference in Jacksonville, FL, on Tuesday 1/8/2019. There are also rumors that AEW may be trying to work out a co-promotion deal with NJPW and ROH. Omega may come back to NJPW from time to time. Nobody really knows anything with AEW right now beyond a couple of signings and some T-shirts. And this could all be a massive work. We’ll know sooner or later, probably sooner.
Meanwhile, at the press conference, NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi announced three things of his own. The biggest news item from all this is that as of 1/31/2019, Yujiro Kushida, aka KUSHIDA, will no longer be part of NJPW. He’s been with the company 8 years, and established himself as one of the top junior heavyweights in the entire world in that run. The date of his departure means his finale in NJPW will either be one of the two Korakuen Hall Road to New Beginning shows, with an outside chance of the New Beginning USA in Los Angeles on 1/30/2019 being one as well. (More on those below) There has been talk of a WWE offer, and he said he was heading overseas, so unless AEW also has a sweet offer for him, expect to see Kushida in NXT or on 205 Live soon. I’ll probably write a longer tribute once we know what his final show will be.
The presser also mentioned the impending retirement of Takayuki Iizuka, aka Suzuki-gun’s Takashi Iizuka, on 2/21/2019, a New Japan Road show at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. Iizuka is 52, and debuted on 11/2/1986 against Akira Nogami, and has been signed to NJPW his entire career. Again, a longer tribute will be coming soon.
Sugabayashi took time to mention that Kota Ibushi will be out the next tour (presumably meaning New Beginning) to recover from the concussion suffered by Will Ospreay’s elbow during WK13. We wish his recovery.
In the meantime, the full cards have been announced for Fantasticamania (well, mostly), as well as the New Beginning in Sapporo & Osaka shows.
The Fantasticamania shows seem to be a bit of a mish-mash, and indeed the three Korakuen Hall shows are not fully announced yet. They are running a CMLL Family Tag Team tournament this year, similar to last year’s Brothers Tag Tournament, and at one point, the winners of last year’s (Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero) will face the winners of this year’s. There is also a Mexican National Trios title match, with the Nueva Generacion Dinamitas (Sanson, Cuatrero, Forastero) defending against Atlantis, Titan & Angel de Oro. There is also a special My Dad Is A Heel Wrestler match, with NJPW guys under masks, although I’ve not seen the movie so I don’t know who is whom.
One interesting part of this is some of the talents. There are clear listings for wrestlers named Raijin, Fujin and Namahage. Raijin & Fujin, of course, were the identities of Sho Tanaka & Yohei Komatsu when they went on excursion, prior to returning as SHO & YOH in Roppongi 3K. Namahage is interesting case, because Kyosuke Mikami, who is currently El Desperado in Suzuki-gun, was Namajague on his excursion, and lost his mask. It’s neat they are bringing these personas back however there seems to be a lot of units involved this year, moreso than most, and it’s filling the cards.
As for the New Beginning shows, we pretty much knew what title matches were coming here. Hiroshi Tanahashi will defend the IWGP Heavyweight title against Jay White. LIJ all have title matches against Suzuki-gun. One thing that is pretty clear is that since Tanahashi, Okada, LIJ, Suzuki-gun and Bullet Club are all spoken for on the Sapporo shows on 2/2 and 2/3/2019, there will be not many big names actually appearing at the USA shows. Which is kind of a shame, but there we are.
Angel de Oro & KUSHIDA d. Cuatrero & Taichi [SZKG] (Angel > Cuatrero, La Campana, 8:31)
Atlantis, Flyer & Atlantis Jr. d. Sanson, Shigeo Okumura & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] (Flyer > Okumura, Avalanche Spanish Fly, 9:24)
Mistico, Titan & Soberano Jr. d. Ultimo Guerrero, Barbaro Cavernario & Forastero (Mistico > Forastero, Swanton Bomb, 16:16)
Relevos Increiblas: Caristico, Gran Guerrero & Namajague d. Volador Jr., Dragon Lee & Tiger Mask IV (Gran > Dragon, Avalanche Michinoku Driver II, 10:38)
I would assume the main event is going to end the same way on tomorrow’s show too. Maybe not so much for the Black Cat Memorial match on 1/18/2019.
(Photo above from Will Henderson)
IWGP US Heavyweight champion Juice Robinson and David Finlay Jr. appeared at the Atlanta Ring of Honor TV tapings last night. At this event, Juice, Finlay, Tenille Dashwood and debutants Bandido, Mark Haskins & Hot Sauce Tracy Williams formed a new unit called LIFEBLOOD, whose purpose is to “bring honor back to ROH,” whatever the Hell that means. This brought out ROH World Champion Jay Lethal, who put the group over huge, and this lead to a 10-man tag match to end the show, where LIFEBLOOD beat Lethal, Dalton Castle, Jeff Cobb, Herb Flip Gordon & Jonathan Gresham. Apparently Juice also said that he wasn’t there for “a cup of coffee” and was planning to be there extensively in 2019. Which is... interesting.
If that’s the case, it puts the status of the IWGP US belt in an interesting light, since it seems like that belt maybe SHOULD be defended in ROH primarily. Also, considering the three New Beginning USA shows coming up, that potentially gives more talents to work the shows, since most of the main players will be at Sapporo. So while there may be less Juice and Finlay in NJPW in 2019, we might get Bandido in the NJPW ring sooner than Best of the Super Juniors 26. I try to find the bright side in everything. Ahem.
The tour continues tomorrow:
- 1/14/2019, Gifu Industry Center
Audaz, Tiger Mask IV & Ryusuke Taguchi v. Templario, Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] & Gedo [Bullet Club]
Angel de Oro & Flyer v. Cuatrero & Taichi [SZKG]
Atlantis, Atlantis Jr. & KUSHIDA v. Sanson, Shigeo Okumura & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG]
Dragon Lee, Titan & Soberano Jr. v. Gran Guerrero, Barbaro Cavernario & Forastero
The finale of this year’s edition of Fantasticamania has come and gone, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. There was a title match, as well as a tribute match to My Dad Is A Heel Wrestler on this show.
- 1/21/2019, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Barbaro Cavernario & Templario d. Flyer & Audaz (Cavernario > Audaz, La Cavernaria, 9:35)
Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero & Namajague d. Mistico, Dragon Lee & Soberano Jr. (Ultimo > Soberano, Guerrero Special, 13:25)
My Dad Is A Heel Wrestler Special Tag Match: Dragon George & Sweet Gorilla Maruyama d. Gokiburi Mask & Ginbae Mask (Dragon > Ginbae, Dragonmaker, 13:05)
Volador Jr. d. Caristico (Spanish Fly, 17:55)
Volador winning the tour finale, as he usually does if he’s in it. The Dinamitas retain their trios title. Atlantis Jr. gets a surprise singles win, and Okumura showed respect post-match. The opener was just fine, I just wish Audaz and Templario had a singles match with one another. Hopefully both will be back, maybe sooner than later. SHO & YOH ditched the Raijin & Fujin gimmicks for the final day.
Overall, it just seemed through the tour that the luchadors were not really the focus this year. Sure, the Kojima v. Ingobernables tag matches set up Kojima v. Terrible, but it also seemed like a way to backdoor a setup of Roppongi 3K v. BUSHI/Shingo for the junior tag belts, that is, if they retain them. And then today’s match was a no-contest fuckfinish because Suzuki-gun attacked, as setup for The New Beginning matchups between BUSHIngo and Kanemaru/Desperado, as well as Naito v. Taichi. Same with the My Dad Is A Heel Wrestler match (do I need to reveal who was whom?), which was non-consequential fun, but then Taiji Ishimori attacked Ryusuke Taguchi. A lot of this tour was NJPW angling, and I think that kind of goes against the spirit of it. I hope next year there’s more singles matches, and less focus on bizarre familial tag teams. Last year it was something different. This year was not so much. Let’s do something bigger for the 10th anniversary of this tour.
That’s that for Fantasticamania 2019. Next up, the Road to the New Beginning kicks off on Saturday. There still are not matches announced for the New Beginning USA shows either.
