I started a cult within my school. I’ve always liked sharks and one day I just decided to buy a twelve pack of these little stuffed sharks (cough in the picture cough) and I’m in a high school marching band. And for those of you who know, it is intense. Obviously the band immediately took to the sharks and started worshipping them. The main shark (mine) is named Shostakovich. The others include Stephen, Steven, Neil, Stravinsky, Strauss, Sebastian, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, and one remains unnamed (it’s my drum major’s and he’s lazy ) (I’ve been slowly giving sharks to people I deem worthy) Shostakovich has been to every competition and football game and he has marched a show. My band directors are well aware of this cult plaguing the band, and they fully support it. Shostakovich has directed an entire marching band practice. Worship him. He is your new God. A deity.

!!!2022 recap!!! (again, thank you @katecaru for tagging me!)
Here we go!
Top 3 films/shows:
1. "Jeeves and Wooster" — a well-known comedy series about the adventures of a silly gentleman and his personal gentleman (including jazz, unwanted engagements, shenanigans and boys and girls with weird names). 10/10.
2. "Winter Evening in Gagry" — another touching story by Karen Shakhnazarov which made me cry so damn hard. A brilliant work of Yevstegneev. A film full of pain, melancholy and tension. 10/10.
3. "Interns" — oh well, don’t even ask me why. I was just so stressed because of the upcoming exams and at some point I simply had to watch something stupid and flippant so that I could relax a bit. So instead of watching "House, M. D." I decided to watch its russian adaptation where all the interns always fail and Bykov mocks them in an incredibly sarcastic manner. 10/10, definitely.
Top 3 books:
1. "All Quiet on the Western Front". It was horrible. Painful and horrible. That’s why I love Remarque. 10/10.
2. "The Noise of Time". It was rather interesting and I read it in like…2 days. The whole book is just Shostakovich’s thoughts about everything. 10/10. Thank you, Julian Barnes!
3. "All the King’s Men". No thoughts. Head empty. It was fantastic. 1000000/10. Warren nailed it.
Top 3 biggest improvements:
1. Said bye-bye to my comfort zone and started visiting lots of places, museums etc. in Moscow and talking to lots of interesting people and actually living and doing something (and not just reading books and watching films and staying in my wonderful but — alas! — imaginary world).
2. Started caring more about my health, both mental and physical.
3. Wrote lots of fics and kinda improved my writing skills (haha wellll at least I hope so).
Top 3 resolutions:
1. Start my preparation for the RNE (esp. history).
2. Become more self-confident.
3. Get rid of migraines and vegetovascular dystonia.
Favourite song:
"Les feuilles mortes" by Yves Montand.
Favourite quote:
"Все пройдет. Страдания, муки, кровь, голод и мор. Меч исчезнет, а вот звезды останутся, когда и тени наших тел и дел не останется на земле. Нет ни одного человека, который бы этого не знал. Так почему же мы не хотим обратить свой взгляд на них? Почему?"
(it’s the end of Bulgakov’s "White Army" in case you want to read its translated version).
So yeah!!! That’s it! Happy New Year guys!!!❤️
Tagging my beloved mutuals @i-hate-radishes @pixcit @madame-karenina if you’re willing to share your impressions about this crazy year — welcome!

{{ Weirder asks: 3? 6? 11? 31? 33? 43?
3. do you leave the window open at night?
Often. I like to keep my sleeping temperature within a relatively narrow range (especially since I don't wear anything to bed) so it varies based on what's going on outside and whether I'm in my apartment, my parents' house (not as well insulated), or somewhere else.
6. why did you do that?
I watched My Cousin Rachel tonight because Rachel Weisz My Beloved.
11. favorite extracurricular activity?
My school had terrible extracurriculars. In theory I think it would have been some kind of quiz bowl thing, if available.
31. what type of music keeps you grounded?
Classical (mostly Romantic/post-Romantic--Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, Verdi--and some Baroque), jazz (especially piano jazz--Bill Evans, Bud Powell), sometimes old-school folk or blues.
33. the last adventure you’ve been on?
Already answered!
43. what’s your take on spicy foods?
LOVE them. Lowkey judge other people for not loving them. Have eaten ghost peppers and been fine after ten minutes and a glass of milk.

Trying to imagine how other people will react to music, and then tailoring your music to elicit these reactions, is equivalent to writing advertising jingles. It may be honest work; it may even have some value to society; but it’s not art, it’s business.[…] It sounds pretentious, I know, but the fact is that a composer’s duty is not to any particular listener or any particular imagined audience; a composer’s duty is to the work itself. A composer has to remember that a true work of art is rich, multifaceted, and challenging. Its aim is not popularity, its aim is truth. It doesn’t give up all its secrets at first hearing, because it’s built to last: designed not merely to charm at first hearing, but to withstand the test of fifty hearings.[…] Who is my audience, then? The practical answer is: an audience of one listener, myself. Only if I write music that makes my blood race, that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, do I have any hope of writing something truthful enough to have the same effect on another listener.[…] By the way, this doesn’t apply only to new music. Far from it! At a preconcert talk in Los Angeles a few years ago, an audience member asked me: “I come to the symphony to relax. Why are you doing this to me?” And I answered, as gently as could, that he had come to the wrong place. Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony is not for relaxing; neither — despite its glaring difference in quality — is my music.[…] . Assuming the best will in the world, how do you get the most out of listening to unfamiliar new music? Let me offer five short pieces of advice: (1) don’t expect the wrong things; (2) be prepared for discontinuity; (3) don’t try too hard; (4) expect new instruments, new sounds, and new influences from other cultures; and (5) give yourself permission to dislike what you hear.
1. Don’t expect the wrong things. The music of the traditional Bach-to-Brahms repertoire operates with familiar elements: major and minor keys; motifs, melodies, and themes; chord progressions; familiar forms like sonata or rondo; ways of playing instruments and using sounds that we have learned to recognize. One of the ways in which contemporary music often differs is that any or all of these familiar elements may be missing, or may be turned to radically different purposes. Adams may use familiar chords in unexpected contexts. Or Ligeti may pile melody upon melody until they are all submerged in a bundle of sound. To listen to these sorts of music using the old mental and aural categories can be frustrating, even infuriating. Let each new piece you encounter set its own agenda, create its own frame of reference, define its own terms. Check all your preconceptions at the door; they’ll only slow you down.
 2. Be prepared for discontinuity. Traditional modes of continuity — how one gets smoothly from one musical event to the next, and how these events are made to seem to belong together — are largely a thing of the past. Many composers have adopted new techniques deriving from the dominant new artistic medium of our century, the film. Thus, instead of orderly, sectional Classical schemes linked by smooth transitions, we might hear instead dissolves, jump cuts, flashbacks.
 3. Don’t try too hard to”understand.” Lots of contemporary music is composed using elaborate, esoteric techniques. But so were Bach’s Musical Offering, Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, Brahms’s Haydn Variations. All these works move us deeply, but not because we are following the composer’s every machination: In place of anxiety over your skills as a listener, focus on the delicious excitement of facing new music absolutely, bracingly alone: without historians or critics or traditions to tell you what to think, free to form your own spontaneous impressions.
 4. Expect new instruments, new ways of playing and singing, and influences from other cultures. Throughout the development of Western concert music, composers have restlessly expanded their resources by borrowing instruments and ways of thinking from outside their own tradition. Debussy’s generation discovered the music of the Javanese gamelan and was deeply changed by the encounter. Aaron Copland’s and William Schuman’s infatuation with 1920s jazz was essential to the music they created. Today, John Adams’s music would be very different if you subtracted his love for the big bands of the 1940s; Steve Reich’s music would be impossible without the inspiration of West African drumming; György Ligeti depends heavily on the music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
 5. And finally, give yourself permission to dislike what you hear. If all your best efforts fail, nobody says you have to like every new piece you hear. One of my favorite moments happened a few years back after a concert. A line of people came backstage to shake my hand and tell me they enjoyed my piece in the usual way. But then a large man came up to me, smiled, extended his hand, and said cordially, “I really hated your piece.” That man meant more to me than all the rest, because — instead of telling me politely that it was “very interesting,” or more likely just going home mad without saying anything — he took his own reactions seriously enough to seek me out politely and talk about them.
Give yourself permission to dislike what you hear. But please — don’t explain your dislike by claiming that “it isn’t music.” History is strewn with rash talk about what is and isn’t music: even Beethoven was regularly declared an antimusical lunatic by critics hearing his radical new symphonies for the first time. The boundaries of music have been expanding for centuries, and, inexorably, they will continue to widen. But since Mahler, Bartók, and Shostakovich have already become accessible (at least to our beloved 4% market share), perhaps someday soon the composers whose music we are about to hear will be too. We owe it to ourselves to hope for — no, to work for that day.

Week 4: Halloween
Sorry for not writing an entry for last week, I was swamped with work (and last week’s show didn’t really need a blog entry, I think (?)). Anyways, I’m back this week to bring you some spooky Halloween-esque music that should put you in the mood to put on your costumes and run outside! Hopefully, you’ll show restraint and wait until Tuesday. I hope you’ll doot along with some classic Halloween pieces and some interesting takes on the genre!

Fun and cute couple costume idea #1-- Pickled Richard from the hit T.V. show “Richard and Mortimer” and show creator Dan Harmon!
1. String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor (Mov. 3 - Allegretto) by Dmitri Shostakovich (Performed by the Brodsky Quartet)
Oh wow, look who’s back for the third week in a row. Real surprise!! I promise that I won’t have any Shostakovich for the next few weeks. But, I thought this middle movement from my Favorite Piece of All Time had a very creepy and unsettling feel to it. It’s a waltz, but a really demented waltz. The kind of music you might hear in an abandoned carnival coming from a sound machine that looks like it should be broken... OH NO WHAT IS THA-
2. Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky (Performed by the New York Philharmonic)
This is the one truly, truly cliched piece on the playlist. So cliched, even, that I felt obligated to include it. However, I think it’s a popular Halloween trope for a good reason. It’s really dark and foreboding, and the source material is about a witches’ Sabbath (foreshadowing!) on Kupala Night, which is a event in Eastern Europe in late June that celebrates the baptism of St. John. Kupala Night is a time when people engage in a “mischief night,” when people perform pranks and mild vandalism, in a very similar fashion to Halloween. It would make sense, then, that this piece invokes some of the same feelings we associate with Halloween.

Fun and cute couple costume idea #2- Music aficionado and rapper extraordinaire Cal Chuchesta and his roommate Tony
3. String Quartet No. 14 “Death and the Maiden” (Mov. 4 - Presto) by Franz Schubert (Performed by the Ehnes Quartet)
Some composers, faced with their own mortality, wrote some of the most enduring and powerful works ever composed. Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique Symphony, Shostakovich’s Eighth and Fifteenth String Quartets, and Schubert’s Death and The Maiden all fit this description. Music critic and writer Walter Wilson Cobbett views this fiery finale as a dance with death itself, modeled after the tarantella, an Italian dance supposedly used to ward of the madness and convulsions incurred by being bitten by a tarantula. I don’t really think it gets more Halloween than that.
4. Bacchanale by John Cage (Performed by Alan Feinberg)
In the interest of offsetting the popularity of Night on Bald Mountain, I present for your listening pleasure John Cage’s Bacchanale. I’ve come to really enjoy prepared piano parts in pieces, so I was very excited to listen to a piece written exclusively for it. This piece has all the fun spooky Hallow’s Eve vibes of the other pieces, with the added benefit (for me) of cultural obscurity. “Oh yeah, you like John Cage? Name a piece that he wrote that isn’t just 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence.” Sometimes, it’s fun to pretend to be an obnoxious music hipster. Sometimes, I don’t even need to pretend.
Tumblr media
Fun and cute couple costume idea #3- Harry Potter and Severus Snape!!
5. Symphonie Fantastique (Mov. 5 - Dream of the Night of the Sabbath) by Hector Berlioz (Performed by The Chicago Symphony)
Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique is one of the most interesting programmatic pieces out there, in my opinion. A young man falls in love, and follows his love to a dance, where he gets spurned and falls into a depression. He ventures out to the meadows to collect his thoughts, but they only become more dark and tortured. He resolves to kill himself, thinking that this young lady is is only love and does not love him back, by overdosing on opium. He does not succeed, however, and the final two movements of the piece take a very drastic turn. In the fourth movement, he dreams that he has killed his love, and envisions himself at his own execution by guillotine (At the end of the movement, you can even hear his head fall into the basket!). In the final movement of the symphony, which is the one I feature in this playlist, Berlioz writes:
He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath ... Roar of delight at her arrival ... She joins the diabolical orgy ... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies Irae, the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies Irae.
6. Spooky Scary Skeletons by Andrew Gold
Tumblr media
Happy Halloween! The ƒ-hole will return next Friday at 10 AM on WMUC Digital, this time probably actually (maybe?) featuring John Williams’ March from 1941. Thanks for stopping by!
