R.I.P. to the fic ideas I think up as I’m trying to fall asleep for the night. You may never get written, but you soothe me to sleep every time.

Do you have any recommendations on where to find good jhashrancher content (fic/art/analysis/etc)?
only source i've got is the confines of my brain, unfortunately... it's been quite a while since i even looked, but when i did, it didn't seem like there was anything at all. there's some stuff for shrancher, of course, but i saw nothing for the three of them.
if there's new stuff that's been made since, that would be fantastic, don't get me wrong. i'm just not aware of it.

It's such a struggle to be a Phlox fucker, I'm not even kidding. It's not the lack of hot Phlox appreciation or the other people thinking it's a bit or even the hypocrisy of Quark and Garak being treated as sex symbols (I mean yes they're hot too but you know what I mean) while Phlox is just treated as some funny guy. All of that sucks but it's not what's hardest for me. No, it's the shipping.
I have been trying really hard to find someone to consistently pair him up with in my mind - I have already given up on finding a ship there's actually considerable content for, if you go to Phlox' ao3 tag and go to filter by relationship literally none of the options even involve him which is fucked up if you ask me - but there's always some kind of snag.
(Note from future me when I was finishing writing the rest of this message: I don't touch on every possibility, only ones I think could evolve into any kind of relationship rather than a quick one off shag (thinking of Trip here) so there's not even that many but I wrote way too much, especially on candidate #3)
The first I saw suggested was Archer which, fair enough I guess, but at that point I had not yet met Shran or knew about Shrancher and now that I do it's not like I stopped with the Phlox x Archer but it's just no longer a priority. And yes, you can totally make Archer having two alien boyfriends work, especially since both Denobulans and Andorians are poly by default, but while I haven't seen Shran and Phlox interact yet (and thus could be totally off) I just don't feel like they'd vibe enough to even hang out casually tbh. Again, I do still ship this but pretty low key.
The next option I wanna talk about is T'Pol and I think that at least initially, she's the most "realistic" option and if the show had been twice as long they probably would've been at least teased at some point (in part ofc since it was the 00s and so heterosexuality was the only option but y'know) and the whole "only two non-human crew members" thing adds something that vibes with me, too, but there's just no way you could ever make them work in the long run because Vulcans are just PAINFULLY monogamous and I simply don't think she's willing to break with that. Phlox would off-handedly mention one of his wives and T'Pol would be absolutely seething. This is not a long term ship.
Then possibly my favourite so far is Tobin Dax. Technically it's only beta canon that Tobin was around during Ent (in the alpha timeline Lela died in 2226 (thus presumably when Tobin was joined) which is over 60 years after the end of Ent and there's no alpha info on what he was doing before but in the beta timeline Tobin was definitely already joined by the 2160s and probably quite a bit before) so unless you wanna go with unjoined Tobin (whom we have zero alpha info and as far as I can tell little to no beta info on) you gotta go beta timeline which I know so little about that it's hard for me to daydream about. But at least Phlox and Tobin are said to have met in beta canon tho I don't know if there's scenes of their interactions. I can probably forget about any non me made content too since beta Tobin is already "commonly" (considering it's all beta) shipped with Iloja of Prim who, fun fact, is actually given as Jadzia's favourite Cardassian writer in alpha canon. Anyway, point is I just don't know enough about (beta) Tobin or beta canon in general to generate anything here.
(And I would consider other Dax hosts as well but unless you count the (alpha timeline) three years between Lela's joining and Ent ending there's not much opportunity for this without time travel. I should mention two things here, one: I don't think Lela is one of the Daxes that I'd ship with Phlox and two: I am not strictly opposed to time travel for the sole purpose of PhloxDax and I can defo imagine him with Jadzia, Curzon, maybe Torias and possibly Emony, but it's an extra level of complication that I frankly can't be bothered with if I'm the only one doing it.)
(Also, just for completeness' sake: in the beta timeline we know Phlox was alive at least until the 2260s which would put him parallel with Dax until at least Audrid tho it's very feasible he made it until after her death in 2284, the two subsequent hosts (who as you know didn't make it long) and Curzon's 2285 (again, beta timeline, it's '86 in alpha) joining. There's different lifespans given for Denobulans (about 300y in beta tho, according to memory beta) but even by the shortest I found (which said 170 to 280) it's very much possible since Phlox was born in the 2080s (beta)/generally sometime late 21st century (alpha). But that's just additional info.)
In summary, I may have to read Uncertain Logic (last Rise of the Federation novel to feature Tobin and the one that, based on my research, is most likely to show him interact with Phlox) but it would be difficult as I can no longer read long texts after getting off my ADD meds (which mess with my antidepressants) and thus literally haven't finished even half of a book in about a decade. As I said, the struggle is real. I swear to you I don't set out with the intention of writing a dissertation in your askbox each time, it just happens. I'm sorry.
Oh, also, if you have more suggestions (or better yet: content) for Phlox ships I'd be very eager to listen! Thank you so much for your time!
-Levi
i respect the grindset so much more people should be phloxfuckers tbh. he’s got that jovial mad scientist vibe and is in an open marriage with his three wives like?? the best phlox ship i have for you is ages ago i made a post that included a joke about neelix using a temporal anomaly to moonlight as the chef on the nx-01 and beginning a torrid love affair with phlox which i still stand by. it happened to me. also i know next to nothing about beta canon but conceptually the idea of pairing phlox with one of the dax hosts is very fun

I absolutely am legally required to ask you this for the new fmk:
The talking 3 members of the Andorian commando squad: Shran, Keval, and Tholos.
-Horta-in-Charge
Of course! Shran, Keval, and Tholos, huh? Let's see.
Slow Burn: I feel like this would have to be Keval. We see him for less than a minute and he's all business - very professional, very typically arrogant, and while rocking a red leather uniform not very approachable at first. I could see things warming up over a joint mission or six. Or, you know, 37 chapters like someone else we both know. 😉
Fake-Date: Shran, because he's familiar enough with Humans that I think he'd manage to play along well and genuinely like the person he's fake dating after a while. He's got a sense of humor, which would make him quite likeable in turn, and he certainly hasn't been afraid to take risks to further Terran-Andorian relations in the past. If fake-dating is what's required for The Cause, then so be it. Of course things would progress from there quite naturally.
Enemies to Lovers: Tholos. Harassing my girl T'Pol during a hostage situation was really not the best foot to start on, my dude. That was creepy and totally unnecessary, and it's going to be held against him for a good long while. I can't imagine that would be greeted with anything but snark and disdain on his end, which would cement a low-grade enemies relationship quite well. Still, eventually I could see things wearing down on both sides with frequent contact to a mutual understanding of sorts, and from there a whole new world of possibilities could open up. Throw in danger, a few classic tropes like forced proximity and the old standby of stranded together, and I could see things progressing quite nicely to the lovers stage no problem.

For the OC interest ask, number 7 for Xelarra and 6 for Shran!
7. How does your character handle failure or setbacks? Are they resilient or easily discouraged?
---
Xelarra usually mopes for a short while, and reads (a lot more than usual) to get her mind off things, but usually her reading will get her thinking. She then considers what went wrong and plots how to either (a) change things on the next attempt or (b) plans how to avoid the situation in the future. For an example of the (b) mentality, see "Nightfall of the Final Day", and how she "solved" the problem of the Noghri's continuing threat to her family.
6. What is your character's preferred way of coping with stress or difficult situations.
---
True to his calling as an Explorer (and taking after his parents a great deal), Shran takes a breath, calms down, and examines a difficult situation from all possible angles, seeing difficulties as puzzles that need to be solved.
To relax, Shran actually enjoys singing and music. He loves karaoke, often roping his best friend Jagged Fel into "performing" with him (Jag's more of a rapper - I can't hear a Linkin Park song without imagining the two of them). He doesn't quite use music the way his parents use art and literature, but he still finds it insightful.

Could Jeff Goldblum star in major role in a satisfactory Star Trek series?
Sure. I think Star Trek does very well with character actors--Robert Picardo, James Doohan, Brent Spiner, and Jeffrey Coombs to name a few. The only question is whether the writers of the putative show could write a role that suited him, and whether Star Trek is the kind of show that would interest him.
Goldblum seems to clearly be inclined toward campier roles at this stage of his career, and the current crop of Star Trek showrunners seem to disdain its campy origins a bit, so it's hard for me to imagine him taking a major role on Picard, or on Discovery as it's currently constituted. But I could see him in a TNG-like show, or as a recurring Shran-type character, or a one-off scenery-chewing villain like Annorax.

I re-watched The Aenar episode and I noticed that the temperature was -28 degrees, and both Shran and Archer had their faces uncovered because they would only walk a bit. From personal experience (living where temperature does go down to -28 degrees) I think it’s very important for you all to know that at this temperature something very interesting happens: your eyelashes (and any uncovered hair) freezes and temporarily looks white. So you can imagine both Archer and Shran walking in to meet the Aenar with a full, dramatic white mascara look.

ok, so I know you said that you feel that pre!Surak Vulcans wouldn’t have developed warp cores without Surak….but other planets still would, right? For the sake of AU I’m about to describe, imagine that Vulcans basically become an isolationist society similar to Romulans, but without the territories and empirical stuff outside of their planet (and the Romulans still leave Vulcan to make their own society). In this AU, I’m imagining that the Cardassians make first contact with Earth instead of Vulcan. Humans also happen to be universal breeders, meaning they can reproduce with basically any other humanoid species, even those that normally require more than two parents like the Andorians/Aenar. So, when the Cardassians, who have a low birthrate (at least in this au), find a planet full of universal breeders….they jump at the opportunity, finding the most politically important human families and marrying their daughters to high-ranking Cardassian Guls. By the time the cardassian upper-class has had their pick of human females, the word has spread to other planets that humans are universal breeders, and the next to start scrambling for human females is the Andorians. The Vulcans aren’t far behind. Basically, imagine an arranged marriage AU for Dukat or Evek/pre-surak!Soval or pre-Surak!Solok (c’mon, we all know he’d be a clan leader)/Shran or Tholos (or both, because I think Andorians would end up sharing human females in this au, because while the second female wouldn’t be needed bc humans can carry in their wombs, Andorian males still only have half the amount of chromosomes required to make a viable fetus so two males are still required) who are married to the human daughter of a president/king/prime minister/senator/governor/Earth politician of your choice. Anyway, opinions on this? Sorry if this is a bit incoherent lmao.
-🌑
Oh. OH. I see. I love this, omfg. My answer is gonna be waaaay shorter and way less coherent, because I'm absolutely dying over this but YES PLZ. I LOVE THIS AU ALREADY.
My opinion on this is YES PLEASE.

spock/shran
I envision this pairing as young Spock's historical crush. Spock reads about the NX-01 Enterprise and the diplomatic tension between Vulcan and Andoria and because he's kinda repressed, he latches onto the figure of Shran who represented a challenge to Vulcan authority, much as he feels he does as a half-Vulcan.
Having a diplomat as a father, Spock knows the full importance of Shran's role in early Federation history and studies what he can about Shran as an act of rebellion. Sarek finds this admiration perplexing but he's just content his son is interested in diplomacy.
Bonus points if Spock ever managed to meet Shran in his lifetime/managed to be in the same room as him at a diplomatic event. I imagine the meeting would be awkwardly endearing because Spock is Looking Respectfully and Shran is just like, why is the Vulcan Ambassador's son staring at me.

Shran/Soval fic
Amicable Relations. Rated T. Summary: Soval comes to Shran with an unorthodox proposal for resolving their differences. Shran has some creative dispute resolution ideas of his own. [Or: we never got a reunion scene at the end of the show for these two. They went through a lot and have things to resolve!]
Shran grinned and stalked closer to Soval. “It’s a shame your species doesn’t blush so easily.”
“I imagine that physiological response would only invite further attempts at teasing.”
“Attempts?” Shran repeated, his antennae tilting forward interestedly. “I suppose I’ll have to up my game if I’ve grown rusty at pushing your buttons, Soval.”

Hi :) can I request a series of unfortunate events with ENT Shran?
Hope you like it!
A Series of Unfortunate Events with Shran would include:
Tumblr media
-the first time it happens you’re fast asleep, you don’t even realise that you’ve been miraculously delivered into Shran’s bed. All you notice is that suddenly you’re very chilly in your barely there pyjamas, so you start to burrow under the blankets some more…which is when you encounter a limb. As soon as your skin grazes his the two of you leap out of bed yelling! You’re so confused and feel terribly exposed as you look around at the surroundings. But when Shran realises that it’s you he can’t help but admire the view, he also won’t accept your proclamations that you don’t know how you ended up in bed with him…he thinks that you did it of your own volition because you find him very attractive. (He’s not wrong but you don’t want him to know that!)
-kindly, Shran calls the Enterprise and they send a shuttle with Captain Archer inside it to take you home. Captain Archer does actually believe you, but he’s utterly perplexed.
-you get taken to Sickbay where Dr Phlox gives you a thorough once over, but nothing shows up. But just to be on the safe side he puts you into de-con for a short time. As you’re rubbing the de-con gel over your torso you feel a slight gust of wind brush against you and then seconds later you find yourself sprawled on the floor under a heavy mass. It’s Shran.
-confused and embarrassed he quickly gets up and helps you to do the same. Only now does he believe you about what happened earlier. And this time you can’t keep your eyes off him, he had evidently just finished having a wash. He was wearing nothing but a towel that was slung low over his hips. He was more than happy to let you look, but it was starting to get too warm for him to feel comfortable.
-as soon as Dr Phlox realised Shran had appeared he conducted some more tests, but again nothing showed up.
-later on as you were about to take a seat at your station on the bridge you once again found yourself somewhere else. In the milliseconds between your posterior landing on the seat fully you were transported, so that rather than landing on your chair you actually landed firmly on Shran’s lap, startling the poor Andorian. Fortunately he didn’t drop you! It sort of took a minute for it to click in your head that you were sat on his lap, but when eventually your mind caught up with you you leapt up and started to apologise. He just found it curiously amusing.
-as there was an obvious theme running, that you and Shran should be near one another, Captain Archer suggested that you should stay with him. You agreed that it made sense. And it’s true, you didn’t keep disappearing once you stayed near each other. But even more odd things began to happen.
-as the two of you walked along the corridor you tripped, and he caught you. Once it could’ve just been clumsiness, but it started to happen every three or four steps and it was utterly infuriating! In the end you found that if Shran had a hand on you somewhere it didn’t happen. So essentially you two had to hold hands now!
-Shran found it funny because for the most part these unusual instances were only happening to you. But as if the universe knew of his amusement it suddenly changed tactics. Everytime Shran went to sit down on a chair, or a desk or anything the item of furniture would magically move a foot to the left, leaving him sprawled on the floor. It really didn’t take very long for him to become frustrated and storm off.
-but by the time he’d gotten to the other side of the bridge it felt like an elastic band was stretched between the two of you. You shared an alarmed look before suddenly you found yourself running at him, and the two of you crashed together in a tangle of limbs on the ground, both of you feeling incredibly winded.
-and it carried on just like that for two days! You had to move onto his ship, into his quarters. Admittedly you did enjoy it some of the time, but you also definitely missed your own ship and friends.

For the Star Trek ask game: gosh! I haven’t gone through the list of essential episodes you gave to me yet (but I can’t wait to do so, it’ll be on my short list of to-do’s!) so I still know close to nothing about Star Trek! But I wish I could ask you something in regards to it lol 😆 So I’m going to randomly pick #5 for the ask game. 💙
Okay, I'll try to pick a few. Thanks for the ask!
Star Trek Ask Game
4. favorite character
From each show:
TOS/TAS: Uhura
TNG: Lt. Barkley
DS9: Odo
VOY: B'elanna Torres
ENT: Shran
(I haven't watched enough of DIS to make a decision)
LD: Tendi and T'ana
PRO: Rok-Tahk
SNW: Una
5. favorite species
Overall? The Horta. I love creative, non-humanoid aliens, and the silocon-based Horta are just so interesting, and yet this acid-spewing, living rock is so relatable as well. She's just a mother defending her babies. "Devil in the Dark" is my favourite TOS episode, and I so want to see the Horta again on screen!
As for the more "usual" humanoid aliens, I love the Andorians! They might have technically come first, showing up in TOS, but they weren't really characterized until Enterprise, and they're basically Trek Chiss. Both are blue, come from icy worlds, and have a strong warrior culture, while being more calculating and intelligent than most "strong warrior races" like Klingons. Shran is awesome! (I named a very prominent Chiss OC of mine after him), and we *should* learn a lot more than we have about them and the Tellarites. They're founding members of the Federation as well, just like humans and Vulcans, and they deserve more time in the spotlight.
25. favorite captain-first officer dynamic
Janeway and Chakotay's. I've been shipping them since the 90s. What can I say?
30. favorite plot of the week episode
TNG's "Disaster". I loved how so many characters were thrown outside their comfort zones, yet still came out on top in this episode. Picard's dynamic with the kids, reassuring them as he got them to climb up the turbolift shaft was touching, and Troi managing to take command of the Enterprise was a turning point for her character. I usually don't like O'Brian that much, but I loved how he stood up for Troi against Ensign Ro (imagine an ensign thinking she can tell a Lt. Commander what to do! The nerve!) I liked the ongoing arc in the last two seasons of TNG with Troi beginning to see herself as more than just the councilor, her wearing a real uniform and taking the Commander's test, just becoming more confident with herself and her career in Starfleet, and it really started with this episode.
33. favorite pilot episode
Strange New World's pilot, simply called "Strange New Worlds". I loved how it looked at just how Starfleet would respond when it turns out a pre-warp species got ahold of technology they "shouldn't" have, and it's Starfleet's fault. I think the way Captain Pike handled the situation was pure genius, and it really got me hooked on the series, even if the premise of the show itself ("The Cage" made into an actual series), and favourites from TOS returning wasn't tempting enough! The rest of the 1st season was incredible too, and I can't wait until the next!
