I am obsessed with a mostly defunct, short-lived hot dog chain--Twin Castle Hot Dogs had distinctive red and white tiles, crenulated rooflines, shield-shaped signboxes, and heraldic scroll corner signs (mounted on a lance).  Those shield signs displayed a number of “Pups” of a variety of “Nationalities” named for menu items.  Locations I’ve been able to verify that had Twin Castles include the site of the OG Johnny Rockets on Melrose, Edgemont/Santa Monica in East Hollywood, off Beverly in K-Town, Berklee, and Indio.  Most, including the last remaining one in North Hollywood, were built into strip malls, though Berklee and Indio appeared to be freestanding.  Would kill for a color spread of all the Dogs.

The Real Image in the “Façades”

Born in Beijing and based in Tkaronto/Toronto, Canadian artist Shellie Zhang is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the contexts and construction of a multicultural society. Through her art, which often visually reflects a collaborative effort of past and present communicative and symbolic iconography, “Zhang is interested in how culture is learned and sustained, and how the objects and iconographies of culture are remembered and preserved“. 

One particular artwork of Zhang’s that follows this same aim in a more specific manner is her 2020-2021 sculpture work titled ‘Façades’. This 18 x 24” work is materialized by electric lightboxes, plexiglass, and powder-coated aluminum, and was presented as a part of her Believe it or Not 信不信  Exhibition displayed with AKA Artist Run Centre throughout Riversdale, Saskatoon. 

Visually, Façades appears to be composed of four blank, double-sided, illuminated signboxes which are meant to conjure “images of changing streetscapes” as they are attached perpendicularly to the wall and lined up one after the other - resembling a familiar composition of illuminated light boxes one may see along a real street. The distinct shapes, colour combinations,  and (simple) line-patterns which border these four signs leave hints urging towards areas such as Chinatown, or somewhere with heavy East Asian influence/ties/context.  

In the words of Zhang, 

“Façades captures a combination of nostalgia, regret, and a sudden awareness of time—the feeling of not knowing that something is gone until it has disappeared and failing to remember what used to be there…[with] words and information removed, formal and decorative elements of the signs are left behind, prompting associations and memories of the distantly familiar.”

A part of Zhang’s success in achieving her intended ….can be attributed to Façades simplistic visual depiction of a type of imagery that is perhaps more symbolically significant and iconically recognizable than it is meaningful as a communication channel; the image of the sign itself outshines what is written on it. However, while there is no set of determined text present in the installation, this does not mean that words are completely irrelevant from this artwork as the blank ambiguity of these signs stares at the viewers, welcoming the instinct to associate or familiarize. With this process, the artwork proposes questions to the viewers such as, 

“...what constitutes cultural space and heritage, and the subtext of linguistic messages, [...] with the clarity of language removed, what is conveyed to the reader? What is lost through this omission? Similarly, what elements of language and sign propel understandings and sentiments of hospitality or intimidation?”

As perplexing, weighted, burdened, or dynamic as the answers to these thoughts may be, one way to reflect on how we can approach them could be by relating these blank (and iconic)  signboxes to the idea of the poor image as introduced by Hito Steyerl in her text, ‘In Defense of the Poor Image’. Briefly explained, a poor image can be described as (but is not limited to) a compressed or reproduced copy... “a ghost of an image, a preview, a thumbnail, an errant idea, an itinerant image distributed for free…”, something that deteriorates as it accelerates.” The poor image is a popular image, it is a result of copy and paste or sharing and it is not constrained to the connection to - or context of - its origin. With this idea of the poor image comes Dziga Vertov’s interpretation of how “the circulation of poor images [...] creates ‘visual bonds,’ [which are] supposed to link the workers of the world with each other.” In reaction to Zhang’s Façades, the ghost of the image [‘traditional’ illuminated signboxes] lives within the viewer’s mind, which can be perceived as a channel of distribution in its own right. As one reacts to the blank signs, contextual value is being added in the process of perceiving the icon of the sign. Perhaps you look at these signs and are reminded of standing amidst a section of the Shanghai Bund surrounded by European-influenced architecture, or you imagine walking through the narrow Hutongs of Beijing, or you remember the streets of a Canadian Chinatown. Furthermore, as Steyerl questions whether there is a “real thing” in relation to the poor image, Zhang’s installation could contribute to a notion that suggests that the “real thing” exists, but it is not singular. Parallel to how everyone will experience a unique reflection on how cultural space and heritage are constituted, the real thing exists as an idea in my mind - and it is different from the real thing in your mind.

Lora:

Lora is a well-balanced contemporary serif with roots in calligraphy. It is a text typeface with moderate contrast well suited for body text.

A paragraph set in Lora will make a memorable appearance because of its brushed curves in contrast with driving serifs. The overall typographic voice of Lora perfectly conveys the mood of a modern-day story, or an art essay.

Technically Lora is optimized for screen appearance, and works equally well in print. Designed by Olga Karpushina in 2011. Cyrillic extension designed by Alexei Vanyashin in May, 2013.

Lora is a versatile text family of four styles: Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic. Its typographic voice is calligraphy inspired.

About Calligraphy:

Modern calligraphy ranges from functional hand-lettered inscriptions and designs to fine-art pieces where the abstract expression of the handwritten mark may or may not compromise the legibility of the letters. Classical calligraphy differs from typography and non-classical hand-lettering, though a calligrapher may create all of these; characters are historically disciplined yet fluid and spontaneous, at the moment of writing.

Calligraphy continues to flourish in the forms of wedding and event invitations, font design, typography original hand-lettered logo design, religious art, announcements, graphic design, calligraphic art, cut stone inscriptions and memorial documents. It is also used for props and moving images for film and television, testimonials, birth and death certificates, maps, and other works involving writing.

Olga Karpushina:

Olga Karpushina was born in Moscow in 1987. She studied design in the Moscow state pedagogical university and the British higher school of art and design. Currently she is focused on human centered design and is working on product, service, strategy, and business model design projects.

Cyrillic Script:

The Cyrillic script is named after Saint Cyril, a missionary from Byzantium who, along with his brother, Saint Methodius, created the Glagolitic script. Modern Cyrillic alphabets developed from the Early Cyrillic script, which was developed during the 9th century in the First Bulgarian Empire (AD 681-1018) by a decree of Boris I of Bulgaria (Борис I). It is thought that St. Kliment of Ohrid, a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, was responsible for the script. The Early Cyrillic script was based on the Greek uncial script with ligatures and extra letters from the Glagolitic and Old Church Slavonic scripts for sounds not used in Greek.

Yeri (Ы) was originally a ligature of Yer and I (Ъ + I = Ы).

Iotation was indicated by ligatures formed with the letter I: Ꙗ (not ancestor of modern Ya, Я, which is derived from Ѧ), Ѥ, Ю (ligature of I and ОУ), Ѩ, Ѭ.

Many letters had variant forms and commonly used ligatures, for example И = І = Ї, Ѡ = Ѻ, ѠТ = Ѿ.

The Cyrillic alphabet has been adapted to write more than 50 different languages, mainly in Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. In many cases additional letters are used, some of which are adaptations of standard Cyrillic letters, while others are taken from the Greek or Latin alphabets.

Nostalgia Cinta Perantau Dunia pada Indonesia

Medan (SIB)- Sejumlah warga dunia mengikuti kangen-kangenan di Hotel Four Points - Sheraton Medan, Sabtu (22/4). Dalam kegiatan reuni akbar Alumni FH-UDA angkatan 1984 terdapat sejumlah warga negara Indonesia yang kini berpindah kewarganegaraan. Mesiyah Simanjuntak, misalnya. Perempuan kelahiran Aceh Timur yang bersuamikan pria Rusia tersebut kini berwarga negara Amerika. Meski jadi warga asing namun kala nostalgia yang diutarakan dalam dendangan adalah kisah persaudaraan ketika sama-sama menimba ilmu di Tanah Air. Tengoklah Johnsarman Saragih SH MHum. Berdendang didampingi istrinya, Rosmani Sianipar, pria yang kini menjabat sebagai Wakil Ketua Pengadilan Negeri (PN) Tenggarong, Kalimantan Timur tersebut melantunkan Tangiang Ni Dainang. Usai membawakan lagu ciptaan Tagor Tampubolon itu, mantan Kepala PN Sidikalang tersebut membawakan Mauliate Ma Inang dan mendapat aplaus dari seratusan alumni yang hadir seperti Ketua Panitia Reuni Herry Pinem SH yang Panitera Pengganti Pengadilan Tinggi Medan, Panitera Pengganti PTUN Surabaya Famo Harefa yang alumni SMPN 1 dan SMAN 1 Gunungsitoli, Nias serta Asdun Hutajulu termasuk usahawan media luar ruang Pirma Munte. Beda dengan Mesiyah Simanjutak dan  Johnsarman Saragih yang punya persiapan matang untuk menampilkan lagu etnik, Pirma Munthe menunjukkan kualitas olah tubuh. Meski berusia kisaran kepala lima namun pria kelahiran Tongging tersebut kelihatan lebih muda. Sejak kecil, ketika berenang di  Danau Toba, pria yang memperistri Boru Tumorang dan memiliki 3 anak yang bermukim di Bekasi, Jawa Barat tersebut mahir sejumlah bentuk olah tubuh. "Saya tak tahu persis kenapa dibilang lebih muda tapi emang suka olahraga. Mulai dari yang ringan seperti fitnes hingga yang ekstrim," ujar pria yang selalu memakai tabir surya untuk melindungi matanya tersebut. Menjalankan usaha di Jakarta serta sejumlah kota di Jawa Barat dan kota lain di Indonesia, Pirma Munthe memiliki keahlian dalam memasang out of home advertising seperti billboard, LED, baliho, signbox juga branding angkot dan tranportasi lainnya. "Karier di situ selalu berkaitan dengan sinar matahari," ujarnya mengingat perjalanan panjang usahanya yang sempat jatuh-bangun. Alumni lain, Frans Sianipar yang berkarier di eksplorasi perminyakan dunia dan sekarang di Arab Saudi pun menikmati nostalgia cinta perantau dunia tersebut dari media sosial.
