The Golden Age of Jet Travel

On January 14, 2020, I shuffled through a half empty Hong Kong airport to board Air France 072 to Paris (*). I did so with regret. Hong Kong had been one of my favourite cities for forty years. I had also managed to squeeze in a few detours to southern China, Vietnam and Taiwan, all of which had been on my to-do list for some time. I was anxious to return even before I had left.

Hong Kong itself was in city in flux. It felt subdued and a little bruised after the poIitical strife of 2019. I say 'subdued' but, in fact, the city was in a state of shock as I had never seen it before. Foreboding would be a better word to describe the mood. But aside from the extra security outside the terminal and the relative lack of passengers, Chek Lap Kok airport was operating normally. I had a look at the Boeing 777-300 that was waiting at the gate. I would have preferred the Airbus A 380 operated by British Airways, but what could I do? Hong Kong had long since become a triple-seven kind of airport. The Boeings were standard issue for the long haul, often cramped with as many as 500 seats, cheap fares, no frills.

The plane lifted off, roaring low over the drop-off zone for city buses where I had arrived a few hours earlier. That meant we were going east, the scenic route, especially at night with Hong Kong twinkling below like no other city in the world.

I checked the flight path on the screen and wrote it down. After the initial climb we banked right and right again to align with our basic heading (northwest, towards Europe). After passing south of Guangzhou, we flew midway between Chongqing and Chengdu, had dinner before hitting the borderlands of Urumqi and entering Kazak air space.

By then, the economy passengers had settled into the gloom of their private discomfort, twisting and turning in a square foot of rental space. Europe finally loomed as we approached Moscow, then Vilnius, Berlin, Cologne and into Paris CDG after enduring 12,5 hours of flight. Many of the cities en route were familiar to me, I had clear images in my mind of Chengdu and steamy Chongqing where I remembered arriving, years ago, after two days and nights on a decrepit river ferry plying the Yangtze river from Yichang, or rather from the nearby Three Gorges Dam. Vilnius was even fresher in my memory, an utterly different sort of city, small, spotless and cool. Reassuringly European.

Early morning Paris looked a little bleak but there was enough time before the connecting flight to have a relaxed breakfast in Terminal 2F (baguette, beurre, confiture Bonne Maman, café crème, all impeccable for EUR 3,5 at McDo).

In Malaga I took the suburban train from the airport, walked home from the station and that was it. The next morning I half emptied my red travel bag and left it sitting beside the stairs, symbolically ready for the next trip. As ever, it was a discreet act of faith, of hope that there would be a next trip.

You can guess the rest. The bag is still sitting there, untouched, unused, untravelled.

Of course, I had realized some time ago that all this flying around could not go on forever, moving billions of people to thousands of cities where they didn't belong or had no legitimate business. It was ultimately unsustainable, but then so was everything else. The throwaway lifestyle, the manic overconsumption, the disposable clothes and junk food. All of it was going to drag our buzzing, overpopulated planet into a catastrophic tailspin. But maybe, hopefully, surely, I could squeeze in some more travel.

That was before the pandemic.

The magic of a handwritten airline ticket. This one has an unused coupon, valid for travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, sold in 1991. It records that in the first leg of the trip (from Frankfurt) I had been in seat 57 C  - the back of the plane!

The sedentariness has weighed on me. It has spooked me. Having been a happy 'citizen of nowhere' for decades, I miss the nomadic life. Every morning I scan the epidemiological horizon, trying to visualize what the future holds. The prospects have waxed and waned, but are still not good. While I still expect routine airline travel to resume soonish, it risks being mostly on regional routes, within Europe or North America or parts of Asia. But coordinating travel between and beyond those bubbles may prove complicated and probably expensive.

The wrangling over coronavirus passports that would enable travel reflects the global complexity of the safety measures or the differences in risk tolerance from one country to the next. We may be ramping up vaccination in the rich countries, but the vast majority of the world's population risks not being vaccinated for a year or two or three. Their risk is also ours, especially if the virus keeps mutating significantly. All of us remain exposed. Unrestricted global travel may not come back for a long time, if ever. In other words, being in the age bracket that I am, I may very well be stuck.

As a nostalgic reminder of the golden age of jet travel, I am attaching two excerpts from a sound montage I made many years ago. They are called 'For Your Comfort and Safety' and ‘Ladies and Gentlemen'. So please remain seated until the seat belt sign has been switched off.

Katabasis Patterns in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Or, in which I make use of my official Classics minor (and my unofficial film nerd minor) while ignoring my French major altogether.

Howdy, everyone, and welcome to this week’s episode of Extremely On My Bullshit!  Today we’re going to talk at length about how the trip to Davy Jones’ Locker in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End borrows elements from various classical narratives containing a katabasis, or a trip to the Underworld.  This will be a slightly Tumblr-ified version of an actual paper I wrote for my Classical Antiquity On Screen final.

Shoutout to this post by @charlesdances, which allowed me to infodump about Hades/Persephone parallels in Barbossa and Elizabeth’s relationship across the trilogy, and to @aye-tortuga for requesting this longer post, which I teased at the end of the aforementioned meta.

Right then, let’s get started!  Under a cut to spare your dashes from long post made longer still by screencaps and works cited (yep, it’s that kind of meta).  For the purposes of this meta, only the first three Pirates films will be considered canon as the later sequels contradicted elements of the established lore.

I touched on this in the first paragraph, but I’ll begin by defining two words which will appear throughout this meta: katabasis and anabasis.  Katabasis and anabasis are Ancient Greek terms which refer to “that narrative . . . that portrays the hero’s descent into, and ascent from, the underworld—the journey to hell” (Holtsmark 25).  (If you want to get etymological about it, kata is down, ana is up, and baino comes from the verb meaning “to go [on foot].”)

This katabasis narrative takes place in the first act of At World’s End.  If you’ll recall, Dead Man’s Chest ended with Elizabeth chaining Jack to the Black Pearl’s mast: she knew the Kraken was only interested in Jack, so she sacrificed him to give herself and the others a chance to escape.  However, at the very end of the film, Elizabeth and the crew of the Pearl pledge to retrieve Jack from his resting place in Davy Jones’ Locker (the Underworld), and Tia Dalma offers both herself and Barbossa as guides to those “weird and haunted shores.”

So, after the cinematic fucking masterpiece that is the opening “Hoist the Colours” sequence (I also wrote a paper on that lol), we find ourselves in Singapore, where Elizabeth, Barbossa, and co. meet with the pirate lord Sao Feng in hopes of obtaining a map to the Locker.  The Singapore segment opens with Elizabeth piloting a lone craft along a murky river, evoking images of Charon with his ferryman’s pole:

As she poles the boat along, she sings a pirate tune with decidedly death-centric lyrics, tuning us in to the symbolism and themes at play: “Some men have died and some are alive / Others sail on the sea / With the keys to the cage and the Devil to pay / We lay to Fiddler’s Green.* / The bell has been raised from its watery grave / Hear its sepulchral tone . . .” (*A form of afterlife from maritime folklore)

At the end of this scene, we see something odd: Tia Dalma dressed as a blind organ grinder.

Plot-wise, this serves to divert the colonial soldiers’ attention from the pirates’ activity, but metaphorically, here she represents the blind seer Tiresias, whom Odysseus encounters when he first enters the realm of Hades (Odyssey 11.187-149).

When the pirates meet Sao Feng, the imagery starts to mix a little.  The filmmakers present Sao Feng in a somewhat Hades-esque (Hadean?) manner (steam, flames, and warm tones, with a skylight to imply subterranean depths):

However, while he is a powerful figure, he does not keep the Underworld itself (that duty falls to Jones); he merely keeps the knowledge of its entrance.  Barbossa attempts to gain this knowledge by presenting Sao Feng with a silver coin: a reminder of his duty as Pirate Lord as well as another Charon parallel.  Barbossa’s tactic does not work, but like in the previous scene, the imagery prepares viewers for the descent to come.

After getting Sao Feng’s navigational charts another way, the pirates’ journey to the underworld continues in earnest.  When Will expresses doubt about their path, Barbossa nearly quotes the Aeneid outright: “Trust me, young Master Turner: it’s not gettin’ to the Land of the Dead that’s the problem; it’s gettin’ back.”  This echoes the Cumaean Sibyl’s famous words to Aeneas: “Easy is the descent to [the Underworld]: night and day the door of gloomy Dis stands open; but to recall one’s steps and pass out to the upper air, this is the task, this the toil!” (Aeneid 6.126-129, tr. H.R. Fairclough).  Aeneas, guided by the Sibyl, passes through the mouth of a cave as part of his descent (“A deep cave there was, yawning wide and vast, of jagged rock” (Aeneid 6.237-238, cf. 6.262-263, tr. Fairclough)); likewise the pirates, guided by Barbossa and the charts, pass through a cave as they travel into stranger climes:

(Buuuut to be fair, this one is possibly just incidental or else more of a reference to Gustave Doré’s art for Rime of the Ancient Mariner rather than a reference to any specific classical text.  Doré’s artwork is used elsewhere in PotC, so it’s prolly just aesthetic.  Also caves are cool and the ultimate symbolic doorway.)

Next they come to a distant, shadowy realm with a misty sky and a sea tranquil enough to reflect starlight:

Again, this could also be incidental (and/or just a really cool homage to the sailing-to-the-moon scene in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)), but it does have a classical counterpart: “The ship took us to the deep, outermost Ocean / And the land of the Cimmerians, a people / Shrouded in mist.  The sun never shines there [...] Nor bathes them in the glow of its last golden rays; / Their wretched sky is always racked with night’s gloom” (Odyssey 11.14-19).

Both of these qualities—the cave and the darkness—fit Holtsmark’s observations on katabatic patterns: “The entryway to the other world is often conceived as lying in caves or grottoes or other openings in the earth’s crust into the nether regions, such as chasms or clefts. . . . The lower world is generally dank and dark, and the journey usually takes place at dusk or during the night” (Holtsmark 25).

At last, the pirates’ ship goes over the edge of an enormous waterfall and the screen fades to black.  Voices from the original Pirates of the Caribbean theme park ride echo over the dark screen, ending with the ominous phrase “Dead men tell no tales.”  However, we shall soon see this proved very wrong, for the pirates encounter several souls with tales to tell.  As for these nameless voices, they may represent multitudes of “bloodless shades” (Metamorphoses 10.42) left to languish in other parts of the Locker/Underworld.

At this point, the narrative cuts from the pirate band to Jack in Davy Jones’ Locker.  Jack warrants special punishment from Jones for disobeying the rules of a bargain they’d once struck (*yells forever about the good parts of The Price of Freedom and the crimes wrought by the DMTNT retcons*).  Jack’s own special hell, recalling the punishments of Tantalus and Sisyphus (Odyssey 11.611-629), does include his beloved Black Pearl (explicitly stated, by Jack himself, to be a symbol of personal freedom), but now it rests completely beached upon an endless, windless salt flat.  Jack is utterly alone in this wasteland, save for a crew of his own imaginary doppelgängers.

(I’m gonna be real with y’all: I don’t care for this scene at all and it brings the narrative to a screeching halt, so let’s just take a moment to angstily reflect on how profoundly this affects Jack-the-character’s psyche/mental state for the rest of the film and move on to better things.  God bless RPers and fic writers who deal with this scene and its effects in a deliciously Watsonian way.)

Tia Dalma/Calypso’s crabs eventually come to bear both captain and ship back to the sea.  This could be seen as classical-type divine aid/favoritism (a semi-literal deus ex machina) or as awkward, oh-no-what-do-we-do-now screenwriting, take your pick.  The crabs take Jack and the Pearl directly to the rest of the pirates, who have washed up on the Locker’s desolate shore.  In a twist on the classical formula, Jack initially thinks his rescuers the dead ones as they recount their past experiences.  Additionally, Jack represents a sort of Eurydice figure as the dead-in-need-of-rescuing, while his Orpheus, Elizabeth, is ironically the one who “killed” him in the first place.  All the pirates (Jack included) finally set sail in the freed Black Pearl and attempt to escape this Underworld: the anabasis has begun.

On their way out, when the sky grows dark, the crew encounter scores upon scores of shades floating aimlessly upon the sea:

This parallels Odysseus’ experience (“Then out of Erebus / The souls of the dead gathered / . . . They drifted up to the pit from all sides / With an eerie cry, and pale fear seized me” (Odyssey 11.34-35, 40-41)) as well as that of Aeneas (“Hither rushed all the [ghostly] throng, streaming to the banks . . . They stood, pleading to be the first ferried across, and stretched out hands in yearning for the farther shore” (Aeneid 6.305, 313-314)).  Tia Dalma reveals that long ago, Calypso had charged Davy Jones “to ferry those who died at sea to the Other Side,” but he has since abandoned his duty, hence his current eldritch appearance.  This explicitly posits Jones as a failed psychopomp who has now left these souls stranded like the unburied men of the Odyssey and Aeneid.

The crew leave these shades in peace until Elizabeth spots a familiar face: her father.

At this point I must ask you to rewatch this scene so you can fully appreciate the parallels without me including a lengthy transcript in this already long post.

This scene comes directly from classical literature, as both Odysseus and Aeneas encountered dead parents in the Underworld.  Odysseus saw his mother: “. . . At once / She knew me, and her words reached me on wings: / ‘My child, how did you come to the undergloom / While you are still alive?  It is hard for the living / To reach these shores.  There are many rivers to cross, / Great bodies of water, nightmarish streams, / And Ocean itself, which cannot be crossed on foot / But only in a well-built ship’” (Odyssey 11.151-158).  Like Elizabeth, Odysseus had no prior knowledge of his mother’s passing (11.170).  His mother warned him of the dangerous situation which had sprung up during his absence, just as Weatherby Swann warned the pirates of the dangers of Davy Jones’ Heart.  Aeneas likewise encountered the spirit of his father, Anchises: “‘Have you come at last[?] . . . Over what lands, what wide seas have you journeyed to my welcome! What dangers have beset you, my son!’” (Aeneid 6.687-693).  Anchises, too, offers some advice for the future, for he “tells of the wars that the hero next must wage . . . [and] how to face or flee each peril” (6.890-892).  Having Elizabeth be the one to encounter a dead parent in the Underworld confirms her as the series’ protagonist, in case that wasn’t patently obvious from the rest of the trilogy (and the failure of Pirates 4 and 5).  Weatherby Swann’s warning also serves to remind the audience of the stakes.

Finally, the pirates make their way out of the Locker.  While the remainder of their journey takes more inspiration from Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Western European folklore than classical literature, the latter’s influence on the film remains quite clear.  When the pirates return to the land of the living, it is daybreak:

So, too, does Odysseus emerge from the Underworld into a new dawn: “Our ship left the River Ocean / And came to the swell of the open sea / . . . Where Dawn has her dancing grounds / And the Sun his risings” (Odyssey 12.1-5).  The pirates thus complete their katabasis/anabasis, and with rather more luck than Orpheus.

In review: The pirates begin their katabasis in Singapore, which boasts a plethora of Underworld symbolism, including a death-centric song and images of Charon, Tiresias, and Hades.  They cross various waters in their descent, mirroring locations from Homer and Vergil, and Barbossa quotes the Cumaean Sibyl.  Elizabeth and the pirates retrieve Jack from the Locker’s punishments in a twist on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth.  Like Odysseus and Aeneas, Elizabeth sees her dead parent in the Underworld, who warns her of things to come.  In the end, the pirates emerge from the Underworld into the light of dawn, signalling their return to life.  By borrowing from Homer, Vergil, and Ovid, At World’s End presents an Underworld narrative which is familiar in structure and yet easily incorporated into a new mythology: “Same story, different versions.”

The story of Lt Wilkinson and the Fighting Ferry Wi-Lo

Thomas Wilkinson was born in 1898 in Lancashire England. He was 43 years old and a temporary lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve during WW2.

On the morning of Feb 13 1942, he was in command of the river boat Wi-Lo(prev a passenger steamer) was leaving Singapore to ferry troops to the Dutch East Indies, encountered a Japanese fleet heading to Palembang Sumatra where the Japanese were attacking and attempting to take the vital oil refinery and air field from the allies. Although the Wi-Lo was heavily outnumbered and only armed with a single 4 inch gun and two machine guns, Thomas Wilkinson fired on the Japanese troop transport ships, managing to set one on fire and damage several others before his ship was out of ammunition after 90 minutes of firing and being fired upon by far larger and more heavily armed Japanese Cruisers, Wilkinson ordered the Wi-Lo to full speed and made to ram a Japanese transport before the ship was fired into at point blank range and sank. Thomas Wilkinson went down with the Wi-Lo and received a posthumous Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry Britain had and the only VC awarded in the Dutch E Indies Campaign.This guy had some balls to take on a heavy cruiser with a river boat. To give you an idea of the size difference alone.

Walking 20,000 kilometers / 12,427 miles 👣 in 22 countries 🌍 in 4 years and 3 months ☀️🌗

Today I wish to share with you some of the best PHOTOS and VIDEOS of how I walked 20,000 kilometers or 12,427 miles in 22 countries which took me total 4 years and 3 months.

I started this long walk on May 11, 2014 from Estonia in Northern Europe and completed walking 20,000 kilometers over 4 years later in Sumatra Island of Indonesia.

The 22 countries where I walked were: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Iran, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The longest distance I walked in India - over 3,600 kilometers or 5,793 miles which took me 7 months.To cross some rivers, seas and an ocean I also used some ferries, ships and planes.20,000 kilometers or 12,427 miles is the distance that I covered 100% by only walking!

SOME FACTS AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES

I used total 24 pairs of different shoes.* I slept and lived shortly in over 220 local homes together with local families. Home is the most private place – a holy place. To be inside a local home together with a local family is surely one of the most special, interesting and enriching experience that can happen to any traveler.

The longest time that I stayed in one home was over 3 months. I became very close with one family in the mountains of Nepal and helped them to build a new house after the big Nepali earthquake.

I slept alone in a tent for over 650 nights.

When I started this long walk the total amount of money that I had in my pocket and in my bank was 8 euros. I even collected, washed and ate some edible leaves from the roadside.Later I rented out and sold my house which made the journey a bit easier.

All my travel expenses for 1 full year were average 3,000-3,600 euros which is 3,245 – 3,785 US dollars $.

Over 2,200 kind people stopped me on the road and asked me many questions. They gave me a lot of free drinks and food, invited me to their homes, gave me many gifts and even money!

In 1 day I normally walked 25 - 35 kilometers. My daily record was 64 kilometers or 39 miles. I was going very slowly and I did not want to break any records.

The weight of my bag varied a lot from from total 8 kg to 23 kilograms.

For many weeks I was walking and camping in the snowy mountain of Northern Turkey with even -17 degrees celsius or / 1.4 °F.

And for many weeks I passed some desert areas in Iran and in India where the temperature rose every day to +40 to + 42 degrees celcius or 107.6 °F.

For many months I walked in the monsoon rains of Asia where few times the water rose over my knees.

I crossed alone a hilly jungle in Laos where on the third day I finished all my food and I started to eat fresh bamboo leaves.

2 times I was attacked by dogs (India and Thailand) and once needed to go the hospital because of that.

Over 1 week my walking was escorted by very heavily armed police forces in Northeast India and in Myanmar.

In different countries I was invited to visit over 45 schools and universities to share my travel experiences and photos with ten of thousands of students.

For 1 month I lived a zen monastery in the mountains of Vietnam.

My dear mother came to meet me and to travel together with we in Greece, Turkey, Nepal and in Vietnam. In Vietnam we bought one bicycle, my mother was riding the bicycle with our bags and I was running (not walking) near her for 2 weeks.

Many people joined my walk in different countries. The biggest group I had in Vietnam where 13 people joined the long walk for 5 days.

I found new homes to 3 dogs and 4 cats that I found abandoned in very remote roadsides.

And I gave over 140 international media interviews.

After I had walked 13,000 kilometers I had arrived to Vietnam where I met a girl named Sâm. She was a marathon runner and wished to join my walk for few days.In the next exactly 1 year she came to meet me and to walk together with me exactly 10 times – 2 times by bus and 8 times by airplane in 5 different countries! Together we walked over 750 kilometers. In October 2018 we got married and last year in March we became parent of a baby girl.Now we are making plans to continue traveling around the world all 3 of us. Waiting now for the global pandemic to end!I would continue walking and my wife and daughter would move on the same route with a small camping car.

My dream is to walk in different countries at least +20,000 kilometers more to complete walking the total distance of planet Earth’s Equator which is 40,075 kilometers or 24,901 miles. 📰PLEASE READ MORE

Ode to Greenpoint

I purchased a pillow. It says: “Greenpoint is my happy place”.

And indeed it is.

It’s Brooklyn Polish neighborhood. The new Williamsburg. The hipster place. But for me, it’s simply home.

By the East River shore, I found my place in between water tanks, pre-war buildings and restored old factories with undeniable charm. I was privileged that for a year and a half I took the ferry to work. That is a blessing in any part of the world, specially in New York City. East River, I love you.

I absolutely adore walking to the barge over hot summer nights, I visited Transmitter Park every single morning through the 2019 summer, it was almost like my own private backyard, I enjoy spending my afternoons in Little Neck Outpost, Sweetleaf, Maman or Early Coffee, the beautiful cafes around the area. I know by memory all the restaurants, deals and happy hours from Anella, 21 Greenpoint, Le Fanfare, Pencil Factory and more recently, Madre.

I spend my Mondays walking in and out Union Pool. I found Amy, my amazing hairstylist at Kennaland, and Mark, my masseuse and health guru in Press.

My current apartment, we call it Franklin, is far from perfect: a pre-war building in Brooklyn, with uneven wood floors that may resemble a skatepark, on a noisy corner, with uncontrollable central heating that makes you fell like in your own private sauna, even if it’s snowy outside. The toilet gets clog if you throw paper in it and the smoke detector goes on quite often, scaring the shit out of you while preparing your morning toast.

It’s owned by a terrible, and I mean, TERRIBLE landlord which treats you badly at will and charges you a demential rent amount. It’s not nice. Franklin, you are actually a pain in the ass. But I deeply, insanely and blindly love this place. With all these imperfections, you became perfect. You became home: I made you my home. I just felt it. After visiting 27 apartments in two cold mornings during January 2018, I found you. I saw you, I entered and felt a vibe.

The place talked to me. It had a soul. Its 6 beautiful windows shed light to my winter and I just knew it. I asked the agent “what’s wrong with this place, why is it still on the market?”, while noticing the bumpy floor and the shitty door knob. Yet, it was love at first sight. And slowly but surely, I made a home.

My parents came and helped me moving. A few visits to Ikea later, it had already the necessary amount of furniture. It took me months to find the perfect table. I finally hanged the frames I was dying to put on the walls for the past 5 years during my gypsy life between Scandinavia and Asia. And then, people start coming. I remember I wasn’t ready for the first mingling, we all enjoyed it on the floor. After that impromptu one, everything else was ignited: dinners happened, date nights and hook ups, snowy views from my window, 4th of July on my balcony with crazy Manhattan views. 14 people at times, and there was I hosting more and more dinners under candle lights, thanksgivings and parties. Even a stripper came over! And I’m so sad to let all these go. This was the place that welcomed me to America, to the Dani I became leaving all my past lives, loves and pains behind. The land of the free, home of the brave, isnt it? Franklin Street was, still is, and would always be, exactly that for me.

While struggling to find a new place, something that felt familiar occurred to me once again: I was stubbornly looking for cheaper places in Greenpoint, when Bushwick found me. I never thought I would leave at will. But once again, the neighborhood and the new place called my name aloud. It feels a little bit like cheating. But I know Greenpoint is not jealous, because he knows I’ll be coming back.

Finding my way through my Franklin apartment, between boxes and suitcases, I thought I will use this last January week to embrace all my favorite stuff from the neighborhood: I went to Union Pool for my religious Reverend dose, I indulged myself with the Kwasan in Early Coffee, I had my drink at Pencil Factory, I would go and soak in all the Transmitter Park views, at the moment I’m writing this in Maman, I went for my $10-pasta-deal in Le Fanfare and I will definitely won’t forget Little Neck Outpost. And then, I thought: “maybe I should get a tattoo: A green point.” And of course, if that was the case, that would be in Love and Evil Tattoo, by Franklin and Freeman, where I got my previous one. A dot. A green dot. But then I thought, it may just look like a sick mole. So I changed it to a green circle. Green. That’s the key word here. Green. Tree Green. Transmitter Park Green. Unripe green. Spring Green. Green color from a cycle that on Friday comes to an end, opening the door to a better, newer one. It opens up to Summer. To more colors. To new, crazier and warmer nights. To unknown commutes with discovery as a destination.

Greenpoint will always be Greenpoint and it will continue being my happy place. It will be what Nguyen Phi Khanh in HCM is, what Riksten is to Stockholm and even what Kampong Bahru is to Singapore. This was another seized opportunity. And now, with 30, new full time job around the corner, new home in the making, with a significant amount of savings due to this moving, once again, the best is yet to come.

And what happens with love? Well… throughout this journey, I deeply, truly and devoutly learnt to love myself, my family and my friends. I’m improving and becoming the better, best version of myself because of all this, who surely will recognize the better, best version of you once we meet. Greenpoint showed and taught me this in the most generous and beautiful way possible. In the meantime, I’ll fall in love with Bushwick.
