Scrum Master Interview Questions
The role of Scrum Master in the IT industry is often hard to understand. There is also a lack of clarity in the responsibilities and set of tasks that a Scrum master must perform. Below is an excerpt from an interaction where Saket talks to one of the Scrum professionals and clears few core concepts regarding the role of Scrum masters and how the Scrum masters should present themselves during an interview.
Scrum Professional: I got through many interviews lately, and there are some of the critical questions asked to every person applying for this role. Since facilitation is considered the crucial role of Scrum master, people are willing to know: What is your daily routine? Now, most of the time as a scrum master goes in communicating with the team, reviewing various dashboards, attending ceremonies, etc. What do you suggest can be the best way of answering such a question?
Saket: That sounds interesting. What do you think the interviewers might be trying to find by asking such a question?
Scrum Professional: I think there can be two reasons for asking such a question:
• The interviewers might want to know: How, as a Scrum master, we fill our eight hours of work at the job. What is our contribution in these eight hours?
• Second, the interviewers might want to test the waters of Scum master. They might be interested in knowing whether the person is just operational and only resolves the issues posted to him, or he is a proactive person and takes self-initiatives in a forward-going manner. It may be a second perspective to it.
Saket: Perfect! So, I think the first point you mentioned automatically gets taken care of if we focus on the second one. My understanding is more aligned with your second point. See, the title and designations are organization-specific. So when somebody tells me that I am working as a Scrum master, I get about 30-40% of clarity of what this guy might be doing at his job. Only when I get a view of his daily routine will I come to know about all his roles and responsibilities. The interviewer is trying to extract what you do to facilitate your team to become an effective team. How do you make them high-performing? How are you helping them grow and deliver something that they are supposed to provide? Also, a critical perspective here is that the interviewer is indirectly trying to find out your efficiency in managing the team. The kind of activities that you perform as a Scrum master also reveals the health of your team. For example, if you say I remind my team of filling their JIRA activities, it tells a lot about your team. To me, it is an indicator that the team is at an elementary level. They have not yet crossed the first boundary, and they are still struggling with the basics of Scrum. They are still struggling in communication and collaboration, and you, as a Scrum Master, are working on a very superficial level to manage the basics of Scrum get done. Another example: If you say there are many conflicts in the team and resolve them regularly, it shows what might be happening in your group. Again, to me, it shows that there is a lack of transparency. The team is struggling in communication, and you, as a Scrum Master, are working as a bridge between various members to help resolve the issue and get the delivery done. Take another instance; if you say I keep myself busy discussing with the Product owner, it might pass on an impression that the team is talking less to the product owner. You, as a Scrum Master, are not responsible for discussing requirements alone. It is the responsibility of your team. So it again put a question on your role, efficiency, and above all on your understanding of the SCRUM.
Scrum Professional: Ok. I think I get it now! The interviewer is trying to get the perspective about the team to understand my role in a better way. So what do you suggest? How should we frame our answer to this question?
Saket: While it is essential to talk about your role in the scrum ceremonies and daily routine activities, I suggest emphasizing forward-looking things. As you mentioned earlier, the interviewer might be interested in the kind of self-initiated activities that you might be taking up apart from the bookish definition of a Scrum master. You can try to reflect more on the team development and product development activities. For example, You conduct a one-to-one discussion with each team member in every iteration. The purpose of such a discussion is to understand the clarity that every person has at any moment.
Another thing that you can reflect upon is the discussion that you have with the product owner, not regarding the current sprint tasks or upcoming requirements but as a holistic approach to design and shape the product in a better position than it currently is. So, a forward-looking approach is a way to present yourself in answer to such a question. Another important thing while answering such a question, your response should reflect on your aspirations and the kind of work that you want to do in the future, even if you are not performing those tasks entirely in your current position. The job should meet your aspirations if you are going to perform well.
Scrum Professional: Great insights. That was detailed and made perfect sense. The next question that I have is around the client expectations. In a country like India, where most industries are service-based, the client is regularly pushing for deadlines. Sometimes, the scope is changed even after the sprint planning. So, the question, "how do you manage the client expectations in such cases" is asked?
Saket: We need to balance our answer so that we do not look too idealistic as well as it does not look that we will just get carried away in the situation and unable to take care of our team. We need to find a balancing act. We all face such problems many times when there is a conflict between the client's expectations and the project timelines. In my understanding, two key points can help:
• Empathy
• Transparency
You relate to the person, make him understand the pain of the other person. It is more about you empathizing with the customer, product owner and making the product owner empathize with you and your team. It would help if you created a sense that only by empathizing with each other can we achieve something. You need to make the client understand that pushing will not alone bring the results. It is creative work to think, design, code, test, and execute many other processes. Quality is also an important aspect. You cannot just afford the delivery at the cost of quality. A healthy environment for the team is also essential. A healthy environment is a must for delivering a healthy product. Once you have empathized with your client about these things, things get easier to tackle. Secondly, transparency is of paramount importance. It would help if you were transparent with the client regarding all your processes and challenges. Clarity brings mutual trust, and that is the key to a long and healthy customer relationship. Make things transparent and have confidence because, without these, two shows cannot run.
Scrum Professional: I agree with you. I recently faced a similar situation where negotiations and teams indeed came up with the best possible solution. I have also seen examples where the team recommends the items those need to be picked from the backlog, which can be delivered effectively based on the team's current situation.
Saket: Yeah, that is a perfect example. We can always share insights into internal development with the product owner or client. It will increase the team's confidence and reduce any conflicts with the customer's expectations.
Scrum Professional: Right. So that is that. Another point that I want to discuss is regarding the Job description of a Scrum master. I have worked as a Scrum Master in 3 different domains, and I found that I could manage each one of them well. However, most of the time, the Job description is so domain-specific that it becomes to get even shortlisted. Even if you land at an interview, it is hard to convince the interviewer of your capabilities due to cross-domain concerns. What do you think of such a situation?

Only one thing was holding back Jaren Jackson Jr. and now he’s dominating
Jaren Jackson Jr. has stayed on the court more consistently lately, and his shooting and scoring are adding up to an offensive onslaught in December.
The Memphis Grizzlies are in a hurry.
“Towels? Anyone got towels?” Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies’ prized sophomore and NBA breakout stud of December, traipses out of the shower with shampoo left on his head and soap smeared across his arm.
He needs a towel.
As teammates head to the bus en route back home following a four-game road trip, Ja Morant is addressing the media. In his first game back from injury, Morant finished the best dunk of his young career, this one a monster jam over Suns center Aron Baynes that capped off a statement win for Memphis. The rookie is trying to downplay the slam as Jackson barges into the media scrum at Morant’s locker to borrow a spare towel sitting on the chair next to Morant.
The locker room busts up. It gives Morant an excuse to move on from a question about how good the dunk was, and the media scrum disbands. Morant packs up and leaves. There is no time to spend on this win. The next game is coming too quickly.
Jackson hurries to dry off and get going. He’s behind because he stayed on the court after his teammates for an interview with Memphis’ local television broadcast. A little more attention has been on Jackson recently amid what is far and away the most dominant and illuminating stretch of his career.
Since the start of December, Jackson is averaging 22.0 points per game, taking on a huge portion of the Grizzlies’ offense and using hot 3-point shooting to score more efficiently. The combination of a 28.6 percent usage rate and 62.1 true shooting percentage Jackson has posted this month would be among the best in the NBA this year.
“He’s seeking out shots and being aggressive at the same time,” says first-year head coach Taylor Jenkins. “There’s some times where we have to rein him back a little bit, but more often than not, he’s let the offense come to him, and he’s finding the right balance between attacking and trying to score.”
The mechanics of Jackson’s shot would lead any onlooker to believe the man would never put it in the basket. Since high school, the book on Jackson was that while his shot often went in, the low release point and inconsistent lower body would make it impossible to find nylon against pro athletes. After nearly 300 attempted 3s in the NBA, Jackson’s 38 percent mark says otherwise.
Confidence comes with reps, and Jackson is understandably feeling himself a bit more right now.
Most shooters who are inconsistent in college build their shot from spot-up looks in the corner outward. Jackson took only 96 triples at Michigan State, making 40 percent of them. He only took about three per 36 minutes as a rookie under J.B. Bickerstaff. But Jenkins saw something different, quickly finding ways to incorporate Jackson’s unreal ability to make difficult 3s on the move.

Legs flailing, the mere idea of a set shot ignored, Jackson lets it fly. He credits confidence from coaches encouraging him to take those shots, as well as seeing the ball go in for his recent flame-throwing.
“Me finding my shot a little bit better, that’s been good for me,” Jackson says.
Prior to this stretch — heck, even during the scoring onslaught — the gameplan for Jackson was easy to craft for opposing teams.
“When we talked about him last year, the main focus was to get him off the court because of what he was able to do if he was to stay on the court,” says Solomon Hill, who was traded from New Orleans to Memphis during the offseason.
I ask Hill what his first impression was of someone so athletic and versatile when he took the floor with the Grizzlies for the first time. Hill chuckles before responding, “I figured out why he didn’t stay on the court when we played against him. The foul trouble was something that’s real, it wasn’t like a one-time thing. But then you also see his ability.”
Is it possible that fouling is the one thing holding Jackson back from unleashing like this for the rest of the season? The big man averages 5.6 fouls per 36 minutes, and his overall foul rate puts him in the bottom quarter of the NBA, per Cleaning the Glass.
During a season in which Jenkins has flipped through rotations ad hoc, chemistry is at a premium. Jackson, a massive part of the team’s future, needs time on the court with his teammates to get used to them and Jenkins’ system.
“As a teammate of his, we’re a whole different team with your ability to stay on the court and stay out of foul trouble,” Hill says. “It’s definitely a breath of fresh air.”
Many of them are icky charges when teams force him to try to go right or drive off the bounce when he’s not ready. Others are the byproduct of not quite knowing where to put his chest and hands when someone is coming toward him full speed at the rim. Many seem to come because referees know Jackson fouls a lot, and are quick-triggered with him now.
All of it is a bit more extreme than most young bigs, but nothing that a smart player like Jackson can’t solve.
“A lot of it is just continuing to do your work early, having an urgency and awareness as the players are developing, knowing the situations that might come before the actual action happens,” Jenkins said. “Put yourself in the right situation not just with your mind, but also your body, your footwork, your hands.”
The calls don’t seem to get to Jackson. Frustration boils over from time to time on the court, but it doesn’t overwhelm him.
Jackson’s energy after a foul call isn’t much different than before the win in Phoenix, when he’s on the bench with Morant, singing and dancing along to the music playing over the PA. Assistant coach Niele Ivey laughs at both of them, but it feels like a real team, rare for groups who are relatively young and relatively bad.
Other parts of Jackson’s game are coming along because of the extra talent around him. One thing the Grizzlies are not is young. Veterans like Hill, Jae Crowder and Jonas Valanciunas take pressure off Jackson, Morant and the other youngsters.
That means the predictability of Jackson’s game doesn’t hurt Memphis too much. Though Jackson goes left every time, it often works. He shoots 43 percent between 4-14 feet, per Cleaning the Glass. Not many players this young and this big have scoring touch like Jackson.

Teams foul Jackson a lot for the very same reasons refs call fouls on him. When a guy is 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, much gets lost in the forest of limbs. I ask Hill, a six-year veteran who played with Davis in New Orleans, who Jackson reminds him of. He responds with a long pause. A deep breath. Then a smile.
“I think the NBA tries to find certain comparisons to people, but Jaren puts himself in his own box,” Hill says. “That’s what [Jaren] is able to do, his game and his adaptiveness grows because he came in so young in a transition phase in the league. He can do it on the block, he can do it if you go under a pick-and-roll. You look at him as like a big wing.”
Jenkins��� system takes advantage of versatility, but it is tough to master. The coach calls it “random motion,” though Jackson’s responsibilities within it are anything but random. As he comes off screens, he needs to know whether to catch and shoot, attack a closeout, reset with a dribble handoff, or reverse the ball. If he curls around a screener and doesn’t receive a pass, he has to know whether to cut inside or space out to the perimeter. Standing in no man’s land without any energy kills a possession.
One of the big changes from last season was taking Jackson out of the dunker’s spot and involving him more in the flow of the offense. Jenkins has said he met with Jackson and told the youngster he will not put a max on Jackson’s nightly attempted 3s. Because Jenkins’ system can put players in position to not touch the ball for several consecutive minutes, the coach wants to create mini packages of smaller sets that involve Jackson.
“It can be hard sometimes to figure out where that shot is coming,” Jenkins told The Athletic. “It’s definitely on me as a coach to find the right time to get him the shot that he needs.”
Right, now they’re finding nirvana. But any little spurt, positive or negative, within the NBA season can be disregarded because the sample is so small. Jackson’s recent explosion only dates back nine games. While Memphis has won four of its last five, the grueling NBA calendar can make it difficult to stop and smell the roses. Sometimes, a towel can be more pressing than the big win you just finished off.
Though that may be true, any time a player starts to overcome the one thing holding him back and show the type of player he truly can be, small samples be damned. It’s huge.
“Winning builds rhythm,” Jackson says.
Lately, Jackson has been able to stay on the floor more and impact the game. At the same time, Jenkins is learning how to balance Jackson’s aggressiveness with better game awareness.
Even if the Grizzlies don’t have the time to luxuriate in it, the ramifications of Jackson’s growth are huge. He is scoring like a madman against defenders who know what’s coming, finding a role with a smart coach, and taking the Grizzlies to a new level.

Kevin could have spent those last critical hours learning something appropriate to this interview, but instead he spent all of them trying to figure out a tie. Ties were far too complicated. Ties were old-fashioned, out-dated, older than even legacy software...and they were pointless. Besides needing them every now and then for an occasion like this, they were about as functionally useful as button-up shirts or apartment decorations. And like apartment decorations, Kevin struggled with this to the point of giving up.
He left the tie at home and drove. This healthcare company was actually a little bit closer than his actual workplace. To find it he’d gone through a head hunter in India, two HR representatives in London, and a logistical organizer from St. Louis. After all that, he was happy to find that the company site was actually a 12-minute drive from his apartment.
He arrived an hour early, as was his custom. He met with a software engineer manager, a scrum master, and two senior engineers at once. Kevin thought of himself as the kind of person who got intimidated by mildly impatient drivers and arguably rude grocery store cashiers; this was, in a word, terrifying.
“So,” said one of the two senior engineers (the other one said nothing the entire time; Kevin later learned that he was just there to make the experience more intimidating), “we’re going to start right off the bat with some technical questions.”
“Shit, it didn’t say you’d be asking technical questions on your Glassdoor,” mumbled Kevin.
“What?”
“I said go ahead.” Kevin smiled like it was a joke, when in reality his thought process frequently found its way out of his mouth.
“What are the advantages of object-oriented programming?”
“Come again?” Kevin was stunned. He had prepared for the interview by studying binary search tree insertion, how to convert a binary search tree into a doubly linked list, and the full history of binary search trees.

“Actually, on second thought, I have more experience in C++...” The interviewer did not respond to that. Kevin did not expect him to, since the role was very clearly a Java developer role.

“I don’t know, it might?”
“Sticking to Java, do you know when you’d choose something like an interface over an abstract class?”
“I do not.”
The senior software engineer exchanged glances with the others present. They were frantically taking notes on respective laptops.
The senior software engineer handed Kevin a whiteboard marker. “We’d like to do an exercise. We’d like you to write a simple string reversal algorithm.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll just write a for loop to traverse it backwards.”
“Let me finish. You have to reverse the string in place. You’re not allowed to make a new string.”
“Fuck, you’d think I’d have looked this up the last time I failed on it.”
“What?”
“What?”
In the end, everyone seemed polite enough. The building was nice. The culture seemed like a good fit. But in spite of the fact that no one insulted him bluntly, Kevin felt a sinking feeling that he didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting this job.
The manager walked Kevin to his car.
“About a year ago, someone at my company applied here. Remember him?”
“Yes, actually,” said the manager.
“Do you know what happened?”
“I heard. It was really sad.”
“Did he get the job, though?”
“No.”
It was mid-afternoon. It was 90 degrees even though it had rained the week before.
“I want to ask you something,” said the manager. They locked eyes. “Did you apply here because you wanted a job, or because your dead friend wanted it?”
“A bit of both? I thought it would be poetic if I took the job he never lived to do.”
“Poetic how?”
“I don’t know. But be honest, I didn’t get it...did I?”
The manager looked around uncomfortably. “We’ll still do a thorough review and try to make the best decision, but no. Probably not.”
“Because I’m not good enough.”
“Because you’re not ready. Review your fundamentals. Do some practice, maybe some independent projects. Then see us again in a year or so.”

“I do, though.”
“Do you?”
“Okay, maybe not that much.”
The two worked a little longer in silence. Nora broke the ice. “Speaking of people and things I don’t give a fuck about, how’s Dan?”
“Slowly cracking, whatever sanity he once possessed turning to nothing but a shadow.”
“Oh sorry, I wasn’t listening. A creeper almost snuck up on me.” She moved her Minecraft avatar to collect gunpowder, which she knew she could use to make a splash potion. “You said Dan is doing well?”
“No, terribly. His code quality is suffering too.”
“What do you think the problem is?”
“I don’t know. He seems uncharacteristically depressed, like things are going really badly for him at home or in his personal life.”
“Sweet, sounds like an awesome opportunity to finally do what you’ve always been dreaming of.”
“And what’s that?”

The greatest threat to our company and our country isn’t an outside threat, it’s the idiots right here in this room who do a shitty job day after day, not because they’re trying to but because they’re too stupid to even comprehend the depth of their own stupidity.

WASHINGTON — In a week of White House tantrums and fast-food dinners, of canceled speeches and aborted congressional trips, it seemed fitting that Karen Pence, the wife of Vice President Mike Pence, announced that she was going back to her job as an elementary schoolteacher.
Washington these days resembles nothing so much as an unruly sandbox. As the shutdown drags on, septuagenarian politicians are squabbling like 7-year-olds, House freshmen staged a boisterous protest march to the empty office of the Senate majority leader and the president’s lawyer went spectacularly off the rails in a television interview. There did not seem to be an adult in sight.
“I am excited to be back in the classroom and doing what I love to do, which is to teach art,” Ms. Pence said in a statement about her new job, conjuring up a world of finger-painting and construction paper that seemed more civilized than the “Lord of the Flies” playground inhabited by her husband and his colleagues.
In that world, President Trump sent Speaker Nancy Pelosi a letter telling her that he was postponing her trip with a congressional delegation to visit American troops in Afghanistan. The president’s salvo came 24 hours after Ms. Pelosi informed Mr. Trump that because of the shutdown, she was rescinding her invitation to him to deliver a State of the Union address in the House chamber.
Democrats celebrated Ms. Pelosi’s letter as a power move by a seasoned Washington heavyweight. But the speaker could not resist one last taunt: Mr. Trump, she said almost under her breath to a scrum of reporters, could always deliver the speech from the Oval Office if he wanted.
Mr. Trump struck back in characteristic style, denying Ms. Pelosi access to a military plane to take her to Afghanistan. There was to have been a stop in Brussels, where she would have met with NATO officials.
“In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” Mr. Trump wrote, mimicking the faux-solicitous tone of her letter to him. “Obviously,” he added, “if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.”
Representative Adam B. Schiff, a California Democrat who was scheduled to accompany Ms. Pelosi to Afghanistan and Belgium, swiftly accused Mr. Trump of “fifth-grade conduct.” Senator Mazie Hirono, Democrat of Hawaii, said, “He’s very childlike in his view of the world. It’s all about him.”
Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from the other, more grown-up Washington, said she recognized much of the current behavior in the nation’s capital from her time as a preschool teacher. Every classroom, she said, had the full range of personalities, including bullies and victims, and the trick, she said, was not to cede to the bully or allow tantrums to disrupt the entire classroom.
“My experience is, you let them calm down and come back to you peacefully before you give them anything,” Ms. Murray said. “You don’t hand them that cookie or piece of candy when they’re yelling and screaming because then you will be doing that until they’re 18 years old.”
Ms. Murray, unsurprisingly, was generous toward her fellow Democrat, Ms. Pelosi. She likened her to a sure-footed teacher in her handling of Mr. Trump. Certainly the new speaker, who has fact-checked Mr. Trump during meetings and publicly warned him not to disparage the power of her Democratic majority, seems to have gotten under the president’s skin in a way that few others have during his two years in Washington.
Yet the tit-for-tat between the speaker and the president suggested something else: that despite his inability to change the politics or institutions of Washington, Mr. Trump has managed to change its culture. The capital now plays by his freewheeling rules.
“He does generally force people to play down to his level,” said Michael D’Antonio, a biographer of Mr. Trump. “It’s impossible to deal with him in any other way. It takes almost a Zen master to resist being provoked by him.”
There is no doubt that Trump-like behavior is proliferating. When the House freshmen, all Democrats, arrived at the office of the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, on Wednesday to deliver a letter demanding that he reopen the government, they quickly discovered he was not there.
One of Mr. McConnell’s deputies, Don Stewart, accepted the letter and promised to give it to his boss. The lawmakers then milled outside Mr. McConnell’s office to plot their next move, as tourists gawked and cameras clicked, particularly at Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York and a media darling.
“Oh, my God, this is your life!” Representative Veronica Escobar, Democrat of Texas, said to Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, 29, as she watched the hubbub swirling around her colleague.
It was the kind of spectacle that Mr. Trump would appreciate.
Mr. Trump seemed less likely to appreciate the spectacle that unfolded a few hours later on CNN. One of his personal lawyers, Rudolph W. Nor could Mr. Trump have appreciated fake copies of The Washington Post that hoaxers handed out to passers-by outside the White House and elsewhere in the capital.
“Unpresidented,” a banner headline said. “Trump Hastily Departs White House, Ending Crisis.”
Like much in Mr. Trump’s Washington, even Ms. Pence’s decision to return to teaching is not without an undertone. The private Christian school where she will teach does not allow gay students and requires employees to affirm that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
For the president, the most comforting moment of this turbulent week may have come on Monday, when he welcomed the Clemson University football team, winners of the college football championship, to the White House for a meal of burgers and fish sandwiches from McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King.
The image of fast food under the twinkling candelabra of the State Dining Room — which Mr. Trump said was a necessity, given the lack of White House staff because of the shutdown — gave rise to a thousand snarky tweets and jokes on late-night television.
