My Slayers anime tier list
#slayers#90s anime#00s anime#Revolution & Evolution-R are combined which is fair but if they were separate I'd put Revolution in low-B or high-C & Evolution-R in low-C

Flament Nagel, the Flaming Nail - Paracelsus theory(ies)
This was gonna go out earlier yesterday, but you know, Slayer happened lol.
I feel that ArcSys has been hinting that Paracelsus' 'true nature' is more complicated than described, even more than how his true form being kinda formless and his nature as a morph weapon that reacts to the emotions of his wielder.
So below is his appearance during A.B.A's Instant Kill move back in ACCENT CORE +R, which were a signature cinematic and flashy move that instantly destroys your opponent regardless of health. It's a retired game mechanic now in STRIVE.
So back in their previous appearance back in ACCENT CORE+R, this is the form Paracelsus briefly takes when performing A.B.A's Instant Kill, where he first flies up into the sky while she summons her door.
What’s interesting is it’s only in this form that we see him resemble his original name - Flament Nagel - which is misspelled German for “Flaming Nail”. In no other move or scene does he actually look or behave like a 'nail' that's on fire.
After their enemy is sucked into the door and it closes, Paracelsus returns but in Goku Moroha mode (the extreme mode above his usual Moroha mode) and slices the door in half to break it and ‘seal’ their enemy on the other side to ‘instant kill’ them.
He then slices the doors apart forcefully because he is actually rotated with his blade facing the door. Paracelsus is not facing us the audience in this animation. The 'face' facing us isn't his actual face morphing, but some kind of energy entirely.
What’s more, Paracelsus himself appears to be knocked out (😵) during the entire animation and only opens his eyes after the black smoke dissipates and seems kinda scared or confused at the end of it. Which suggests it isn’t even 'him' doing the attack with A.B.A, or at least not him consciously doing it.
There's the possibility that this smoke and the sludge we now see in STRIVE are suppose to be the same thing, but changed due to art evolution. A kind of formless mass Paracelsus takes on when he doesn't have a definite form, or a form that differs from his default.
I'm not saying Paracelsus was taken over by a completely separate personality or entity, because he still had agency and awareness, he still talked as himself in Moroha mode. And it's clear he enjoys/enjoyed blood and violence and he still reminisces about them with some fondness in STRIVE.
But when he says he "lost his sanity" during his bloodlust, I wonder if it was more like he was partially possessed, and he didn't realize it.
Paramirum
Coupled with his new transformation which is called “hyoui” (“possession”) internally, and his STRIVE axe form has both two 'heads' at once, and is actually a double-bladed axe with one blade broken off. It feels like hints and motifs that Paracelsus is or has multiple entities or personalities in one.
Like on his blade in Jealous Rage mode, that word on the blade is "Paramirum" which is actually one of the books written by the real-life alchemist Paracelsus. It means "beyond wonder". What's more interesting is that the roman numeral Ⅱ is on that blade too, right above "Paramirum".
Does that mean something like a second Paracelsus, or "Paramirum" personality is appearing on that blade? There is a goat's eye on that half in Jealous Rage, which gets much larger in hyoui mode. Could this be his old goat's head personality reappearing indepedently of the main Paracelsus personality?
(There's also text on Paracelsus' end in Jealous Rage, but I can't tell what it is from the gallery images, prolly will need to see the actual model textures)

It should also be noted that in his original Moroha mode, it’s shown that only one of his eyes lights up. So the idea of him being somehow ‘half’ isn’t entirely new to STRIVE.
It’s also not clear if Paracelsus is actually aware in red hyoui mode, and if it's actually him snarling with A.B.A in her attack. His regular face is apparently still there when the attack happens, according to this concept art, so it's a second face appearing on the blade half. Could this actually be a completely separate personality from the main Paracelsus?
Personal headcanon/theory
My personal headcanon now is that ArcSys is heavily hinting a dual-personality situation with Paracelsus. If he really is actually a twin-bladed axe that got one edge broken off, then maybe the Paracelsus we know is ‘half’ of his full personality and is technically incomplete. If Moroha partially reveals his other personality, maybe they use to both be present at the same time (both blades present) but now only one can take dominance at one time (as a single bladed axe).
Or a new personality is emerging that's in response to A.B.A's bloodlust in STRIVE.
There's also a lesser-known property of magical foci like Paracelsus, in that they described as 'physical proxies' to the real 'data' they're pulling from in the Backyard (think in computer terms: the main Guilty Gear world is really more like the Windows Desktop of reality while the Backyard is the actual hard drive).
It really doesn't come up much, maybe in I-No's story, but functionally doesn't mean anything for characters like Paracelsus. Usually.
But there's an interesting thing with what we see pop up out of A.B.A's door when she does her Keeper of the Key Overdrive.
The multiple tentacles are made of sludge similar to Paracelsus' form, have eyes similar to Paracelsus', and also sharp blades and red energy. The Jealous Rage version even reminds me of Paracelsus' other nickname, 'the Sanguine Gale', where he supposedly swung so fast that he sent blades of wind out to slash at enemies back in his berserker days. The Jealous Rage version has the tendril twist around like a tornado with blades extended.
My theory is THAT is part of Paracelsus' 'full body' back in the Backyard. A giant formless mass much like Paracelsus' true sludgy form, that is summoned A.B.A unlocks the way to it when she uses Paracelsus himself as the key, and reacts to A.B.A's wish for them to attack by forming blades and lashing out.
Maybe it's a giant collection of multiple souls, entities, and memories, because magical foci can be created from multiple things attaching to each other and an object or human. In its case, I can imagine it's the collective memories of warriors who died on the battlefield, that melted together in the Backyard and attached themselves to a weapon - an axe.
And Paracelsus could be just one facet of the collective whole that has grown independent in the physical world of GG.
But big reminder that this is all my personal speculation. I don't expect ArcSys to ever definitely say what's coming out of the door; because there's always the chance it's really just 'rule of cool' like most things in the game, to be honest.
But I like to think it's not a coincidence that A.B.A's new Overdrive has her actually use Paracelsus as a key now, and she's summoning something that looks like it's also sludge like him.

What are some obscure, older anime you would recommend? Getting a bit tired of a lot of the current stuff 💔
This really depends on your definition of "older" and "obscure," I think? A lot of stuff over 15 years old is basically considered obscure these days just because of current market saturation, even though it was extremely popular at the time or was a gamechanger in the industry as a whole. When I think "older" I assume people mean like the '80s, but I saw someone calling SoulTaker (2001) "retro" the other day.
My highest recommendation for older anime series is always Gunbuster (1988) which was hugely formative for me and is the reason that Gainax was able to go on to make classics like Evangelion, Gurenn Lagann, and plenty more series you almost certainly recognize. I credit this series with a lot of my interest in science, because it taught me about relativity and time dilation when I was a toddler. It also made me a lesbian. Watch Diebuster after! They were produced almost 20 years apart, but they're two parts of the same storyline, and you must watch them in order for that story to hit properly.
If you want to give yourself permanently unresolved trauma, Dragon Century (1988) is an excellent two-part sci-fantasy OVA that is viscerally violent, insurmountably tragic, and made everyone who watched the second half want to bone at least one dragon. It leaves off on a cliffhanger, but is still one of my favorite older series.
If you want one of the oldest high-production-value benchmarks for magical girl anime, as well as an early example of an isekai, The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko (1985) has everything from mecha to talking animals to a fully animated musical interlude that could only have come into being in the mid-1980s. It's a film, so it's not a huge time investment, and I highly recommend it if you want to see where a lot of the common tropes in both genres at least partially originated.
If sword and sorcery is your shtick, Record of Lodoss War (1990) is a D&D campaign gone sideways in very traditional but at the time less common ways. The soundtrack is beautiful, and the character designs were all done by Nobuteru Yuki, who you might know as the lead artist of Chrono Cross and both iterations of Escaflowne. (If you don't know the second one, I also recommend that! The series, not the film. The film is also good, but it suffers a lot from the shortform media format, whereas the series has more room to breathe.)
If you want something closer to TAZ than Critical Role, go with Slayers (1995) instead, but be aware that it's all homebrew—it also has one of the most solid magic systems I've ever seen, worldbuilding so good it makes me green with envy, and two of my favorite anime characters of all time. It's a comedy in large part, but the slapstick is really effective at lulling you into a false sense of security so the more serious story elements hit like a truck. It is absolutely not obscure—the lead is voiced by seiyuu J-pop legend Megumi Hayashibara for fuck's sake—with three mainline series (the original, NEXT, and TRY) as well as multiple films/OVAs and two late-aughts sequel series (Revolution and Evolution-R, in order), most of which are 100% worth watching—but you gotta start with the original series, which is 30 years old this year, and has certainly been lost to the wayside for a lot of younger anime fans.
Give me a genre or a timeframe if you're looking for something more specific! This is just a handful of my personal favorites.

OFFICER: That's some artillery you two were puttin' together. You with one of them girl gangs? FAITH: (sarcastically) Yeah. We're the Slayers. The officer laughs. Faith doesn't think it's funny. FAITH: (quietly to Buffy) You wanna get outta here? She slouches down in the seat. Buffy realizes what she intends. FAITH: (impatiently) We can't save the world in jail. Buffy slowly slouches down also. Faith raises her legs, and Buffy follows her lead.

Is it worth watching all of Slayers?
ABSOLUTELY the first two seasons. They're both fun as hell (second season is the best though).
I'm not really a fan of the third season. It doesn't match in tone to the first two, and the characterization is really flat and simplified compared to them. I find that while Slayers characters do remain silly, TRY (the name of the third season) actually takes that too far at times and ends up stripping back the development they have had. Most of the humor kind of flops too.
It also kind of sidelines the actual protagonists for a new character. Unless you're really invested in that character, it might not be for you. Honestly, I think it's very skippable.
I do recommend the 'new' seasons from the late 2000s. While they're not as good as the original seasons, they're still a lot of fun. I love them. They're two thirteen-episode seasons, so basically, just one full length season, and there's nothing in them that you won't understand if you skip TRY. There's also the movies which star a younger Lina and her former traveling companion, Naga. They're kind of a different breed than the tv series, though fun in their own way. In my opinion, I would at least watch the first movie to find out who Naga is (she's referenced in Evolution-R). If you like it, there's several more movies and OVAs.
For me when I showed a friend Slayers for the first time a few years back, we watched:
Slayers
Slayers NEXT
Slayers Revolution
Slayers Evolution-R

Slayers Try Review
i am just not doing a separate section for every single movie i watched i watched them all back to back and they were all a fun watch obviously anything with naga is peak in my book end of discussion. if had to rank them in order it would probably be great > return = gorgeous > premium
that being said i think try was my favorite season of the show i think Filia was a great addition to the cast, and while all three of these seasons of the shows have been mostly story for the first 13 episodes > like 6 or 7 episodes of the most random shit of all time > 4 to 6 more episodes of being locked in, i think this season had my favorite general story of them all. i think next had the best random episodes mostly because Martina was funny. if this season had the story + Martina showing up for the random shit it would have been an all timer. that's not to say the episodes where it was mostly just random shit happening were bad this season or anything some of them were really out there (like the fish episode) but i was a good time all around technically i watched something like the first 8 to 12 episodes last year but i decided i wanted to finish it up by the end of the month and then like literally a day later i had watched it all because i ended up getting so invested that i watched it in like 2 chunks. i think its really funny that Xellos was like nooo you guys aren't suppose to know the secret of the universe aha... hes great. glad i watched it, don't know if i'm gonna watch revolution or evolution-r yet because i feel like of the people i know that even know about this show in the first place i never seen anyone bring those up. but well see

Okeey after seeing your blog I'm curious XD I think I'm gonna watch Slayers, but does it have like several OVA's/ series I need to keep track of or just one anime?
After thinking about it, I feel like I'm just going to have to be straightforward and just say it as is.
The anime has at least five seasons, with three 26 episodes from the 90s (First Season, Next, and Try) and two 13 episodes in the late 2000s (Revolution, Evolution-R). The first season, Next, Revo, and Evo followed a loose and nonlinear plot of the light novels (from Volume 1 to 8), while Try is its own original thing. There are also two 3-Episode OVA specials and five movies that are mostly prequels to the original anime (with the exception of Premium which has the TV cast). I am not sure where you can watch these legally as I have not seen them on Crunchyroll since the Funimation merger and I'm not sure if they still have the license (though this is America).
There's also the original light novel series (which has up to 17 volumes), a spin-off series that acts as prequels to those, and manga with a few being their own original stories... I hope this doesn't deter you from getting into it.
#Ask Yami#Slayers#Another thing to mention is that you may want to be specific on searching for it#There's a bunch of other things that have 'Slayers' in the name but not really it#brainrotgoverner

finally going to read the slayers novels, hadn't realized they were being translated/released by a new company (j-novel club) starting in 2020 according to kanzakadex??? which is awesome to hear bc back when i got into the series, the tokyopop english translation/releases had already stopped and i never attempted to find them haha. anyways thankfully the new company is releasing physical format thank GOD bc i CANNOT do ebooks. and by complete luck the crunchyroll store had them on sale in a bundle for the first 3 omnibuses (which is novels 1-9 i believe) so i went for it lol. hopefully the company will keep putting out physical versions bc i see they are up to vol 17 on the j-novel site. damn there's so much of this series i haven't seen/read despite how much i love the first 3 anime seasons. maybe i'll give revolution and evolution-r another chance soon too, couldn't get into them when i first tried. also gotta track down the rest of the ovas tho the dvds for most of them are kinda pricey now (the two i have i found fairly cheap out in the wild i guess i got lucky) so as much as i'd love to own them i guess my best way is to watch online, i think some of the ovas are uploaded on youtube.....also i remember there was a snes? slayers game and a fan translation patch i had downloaded on an old laptop but never got far in that....should try and find that again..... damn who needs to watch/play new series when there's so much existing content from older series i haven't seen/read/played yet to uncover !!!!!!!!!!! yehaw !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts on Zuuma
Having re-read and re-read the novels several times since the last time I saw Slayers Evolution-R, I’d forgotten how much more grisly things ended between Zuuma and Abel in Evo. Recently I’d gotten into a discussion that led to ways that The Slayers parallels themes in Buddhism that also form the bedrock of some therapeutic principals such as Radical Acceptance, the practice of accepting that bad things happen, and what happened between Zuuma and Abel sort of embodied a lot of that.
Radical Acceptance means acknowledging that bad things happen to good people and accepting the adverse events in your life and your feelings about them. This is a therapeutic principal that has roots in various Buddhist traditions and in Slayers you see some characters embody this and other characters fight this, and ultimately in the novels Lina has her own struggle with this when Luke merges with Shabranigdu. In Slayers, characters who embody Radical Acceptance would be Sylphiel, Rubia (novels), and Gourry. Characters who resist would be Rezo, Luke and Zuuma. And there are those in this grey zone in between, Naga and Amelia would be examples there, both of them having different maladaptive reactions to their mother’s death (alcoholism for Naga, and Amelia’s rigid justice based world view and excessive “I’m okay” cheeriness). Going back to Sylphiel, she has to accept that Sairaag was destroyed and most of the people she grew up with and loved have died and that the man she loves loves someone else. Her feelings of grief and rejection and whatever else she feels are understandable and valid and worthy of compassion and while we only get hints of her grieving process, are likely something that she works through. This is how some people heal from terrible tragedies and move forward.
But other people get stuck. They can’t accept that it happened or their feelings. Some try to reverse it (Halciform). Or they try to make it right by hurting others (Luke). And the process invariably destroys them.
In the novels, Zuuma is stopped because he still loves Abel. This is where the deviation in the anime gets interesting, because Zuuma doesn’t have enough humanity in him to still love Abel. His suffering and inability to heal have literally transformed him into a demon. And rather than embrace the son who is the last remnant of the love he and his wife shared and who his wife lives through, he killed him.
The way it is set up in the anime makes sense to me. Zuuma felt betrayed by his father and blamed his father for his wife’s death. After going through a betrayal like that I would imagine that Zuuma’s ability to love his son was stunted. I can see him clinging to an irrational belief (cognitive distortion) that everyone would eventually betray him or let him down as a result of having a powerful figure like a father do that to him (and in Zuuma’s case it became what is known as a self-fulfilling prophecy as Abel tried to stop him from hurting others. Zuuma in the anime couldn’t see his son as a boy to be nurtured but someone who would inevitably betray him and thus lost his humanity in the process.
HK did say that he had a backstory for Zuuma in mind when he wrote him, and I wonder if they used it in Evo. I am also interested in why Abel’s fate was so drastically different in the anime versus the novels, though in the anime it makes sense. For whatever reason Zuuma had enough humanity left in him in the novels to stop him from physically harming Abel that he didn’t have in the anime.

I just really like the set up in this little scene the morning after Zelgadis and Amelia were attacked by Dguld and Gduza. Zel is sleeping between two crates because, I’m assuming, they give protection on both sides. And, then there’s Amelia. In the middle. Surrounded with protection. PROTECT THE BABY CLERIC! 🥺
