Building an Apartment for Stepson, runs off with everything but ends up owning everything of Stepson in the long run.

Hello Tumblr People. First time posting on this area of the site. I have been reading these posts for a while now and found out recently of a story that my mother told me about my great grandfather. I got more information about this from my grandmother who confirmed the story to me and added more details that my mom forgot about it as this happened when my mom was young. Sorry if this is long but I need to set up details to understand the story well. The summery is at the bottom.

So this is about my great grandfather (who I called Pop-Pop), who was on my mother’s mother’s side. He was a farmer growing up with his 12 brothers and sisters. He had a large family and was the middle child. He quit school when he was in 3rd grade to help out with the family’s farm. After he turned 16 he worked for a plumber who would sell the business to him later on. When he was in his late 20s he met and years later married his wife. His wife (my great grandmother, or MeMe as my mother called her) was from a very wealthy family and was 10 years older than he was. Unlike Pop-Pop, she was an only child and she was a widow from a very young age as she also had an adult son (my great uncle Bob, not his real name of course) at the time. MeMe’s parents didn’t live very long and had died early due to illness along with her first husband (I’m not sure what they died of, I think it was TB).

The fact that she didn’t have to worry about money helped her raise her son as a single mother as she didn’t have to work. When her son was 18 he met a girl at college and they got married within a few months. MeMe didn’t really care for her, we will call Jenny, and she clearly saw that she was just in it for the money as Bob was MeMe’s only child at the time. Jenny was from high class family with money. When my great grandparents got married, she gave birth to my grandmother. It was an unusual birth as MeMe was almost 40 at the time and was very unusual for her to turn out ok.

Pop-pop was a very kind man and even though MeMe had a lot of money, he felt that it was her money and he would still work for a living to provide. They lived very averagely; if you looked at their house you wouldn’t be able to tell that they were millionaires. At the time, they were living in a 2 bedroom house. My grandmother was only a baby at the start of the great depression. MeMe was not affected that much due to it but Jenny’s family was affected as they made most of their money on Wall Street and banks that started closing. Jenny’s father killed himself when he lost all his money and Jenny’s mother soon died after that. Jenny had 2 other siblings who were all older and were on the other side of the country with no way to contact them or get to them, Bob and Jenny were homeless. When Bob and Jenny called, Pop-Pop told them to come live with them, no problem what so ever. When Bob and Jenny came over, Pop-Pop gave them the whole upstairs (pretty much kicking his family out onto the 1st floor) and renovated and added on the house so they could come and go without waking his new baby up. He added an extra bedroom, a kitchen, bathroom, everything. Bob and Jenny were having a hard time finding work (due to the depression), but Pop-Pop told him not to worry, stay as long as you like until you can get back on your feet.

This went on for about a year until one day he noticed that it had been a while since he heard anything. While it was pretty typical to not see them every day, he hadn’t spoken or even heard anything for about 2 weeks. He opened the door that he built between the two living spaces and saw the area empty. The furniture, bathroom fixtures, the stove, everything; stuff that he bought and stuff that they brought with them. He had no clue what happened and called the police as he thought something was wrong. The police caught up with them 2,000 miles away living in Florida. It turns out Jenny’s uncle died and left her with a huge sum of money, pretty much being able to rebuild their life overnight before the great depression. As soon as they collected the money, both Bob and Jenny moved out of the house and took everything with them, including Pop-pop and MeMe’s items.

Pop-Pop was angry. He didn’t care about being paid back, he just wanted his items he had let them borrow and just a good-bye, just let them know that they were leaving or something. If they asked for the items he wouldn’t have had much of a problem but he got no word from them and stole the items. As the stuff was easy to replace, he didn’t want to press charges and drag out the mess. MeMe and him pretty much stop communications with Bob and Jenny due to this.

About 25 years later, MeMe has been tested positive for stage 4 cancer. At this time, my grandmother had given birth to my mother and was living in her own house with my grandfather. After she was tested positive, Pop-Pop and MeMe sold their house (the same house) to live with my grandmother to be taken care of. My grandfather redesigned the basement of his house to have the two living in it. My grandmother had known that she had a half brother named Bob and his wife Jenny but that was about it, MeMe gave my grandmother his last known number. She wanted to at least try and tell them that she had stage 4 cancer and not much time left. My grandmother placed a call in and found out what had happened between the 25 years. Bob and Jenny never had any kids, but they still had her Uncle’s money. One thing about Bob and Jenny was that they were smart with the money and invested in it where as MeMe never invested in her money nor did Pop-pop, they jus t let it sit. My grandmother was happy that she was finally going to meet her brother after all this time. However, they never showed up, even though they said they were going to. My mother said that the first time she saw them was at the funeral. MeMe passed away 2 months later and my grandmother called them to let them know where it was. So they got to the funeral and the first thing out of Bob’s mouth was “So what is in the will?” not even a hello. My grandmother had all greeted them (as she didn’t know the history and why they disappeared, plus my grandmother was too overly nice to family) and was putting them next to the family seating when they saw Pop-Pop.

Pop-pop then said to “Sorry, only family is allowed to sit up front.” Bob and Jenny started to contest when they saw the funeral guide. My grandmother was listed as an only child with nothing saying Bob or Jenny was related. It turned out that both MeMe and Pop-Pop were angry by how they were treated all those years ago so in MeMe’s will and funeral arrangements were made to disown her son. They were strangers to the two. Bob and Jenny blew their top, and while my grandmother tired to cool things down, they left. MeMe’s will left 85% to Pop-Pop and 15% of it to my grandmother, it even made references that Bob and Jenny would get nothing and were disowned. Both tired to fight it but it didn’t work. However, I’m still not done with the revenge; this part is more natural development than anything else.

My grandmother still kept in contact with her brother outside of Pop-Pop’s wishes (Pop-Pop still didn’t tell her what happened since he kept saying that he had no son) and that she knew he wouldn’t approve. My grandmother, my grandfather and my mother even visited them at their house during a vacation. My mother said that he always seemed two-face along with Jenny. They would act nice but it was more of an act, my mother brought this up but my grandmother always shot it down (my grandmother was naïve) and she heard from Bob on what happened between the two. Bob’s story was that after a year, Jenny’s Uncle died and left them money. It wasn’t a lot (a big lie) but enough to move out. When they went to tell Pop-Pop about it, he blew up on them leaving and demanded that he wanted the money to pay for rent (another lie, Pop-Pop never asked for money) for a room that he built them along with the labor and construction of the area. They had to leave under the cover of night to be protected from him and that he brainwashed MeMe into disowning him and only came back because she was dying (which also was a lie, they didn’t show up until the funeral and asked about the will when they first got there, my mother remembers clearly.) Since Pop-Pop owned 85%, he still had the majority of the money. Grandma wanted to give part of her money, but she had since spent a majority of it buying a house and doing major renovations to it. She would give him the money, but it would be after Pop-Pop passed away. Since Grandma wanted to give money to her brother, they wrote up a contract that after Pop-Pop passing the money that Grandma got, 50% of it would go to her brother.

So they waited, and waited…. That never came. What happened is too crazy enough not to tell. By this point when the contact was made my grandmother was in her early 40s, Bob & Jenny was in their mid to late 50s while Pop-Pop was in his 70s. Most of Pop-Pop’s siblings had passed away and his health was always questionable. He smoked cigars, drank and chewed tobacco on top of having bad knees so at the time; we thought he had only a while left to live. He lived to be 103 years old. Bob and Jenny passed away around 20 years after the contact was signed by them and my grandmother and since Bob and Jenny had no kids and Jenny’s other siblings passed away with no kids on their own, their money was given to my grandmother after no one else claimed it since Jenny and Bob had no will (I’m not sure the details of how she did it, but she did get it). My grandmother later on found out that what they were telling her about the house was a lie, as she was cleaning out Pop-Pop’s room, she found the old police records and pictures about the apartment along with Bob and Jenny’s records about how much money they got. All of the money was wasted away years later by Pop-Pop (he got into heavy depression after MeMe passed away. He drank and gambled most of the money away trying to ease the pain) so even if he died later on, Bob would not have gotten much, if any of it. My grandma didn’t know about Pop-Pop’s money until she took over his finances when he went into a nursing home at the age of 102. Yes, at 100 he was still pretty active with his finances.

TLDR; Great Grandfather builds an apartment for homeless stepson, they run off in the middle of the night after an Uncle dies giving the money to stepson’s wife and take everything in the apartment. Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother disown the stepson with nothing in the will. Uncle cons his sister to give him the remaining money, but Great Grandfather outlives Uncle and Uncle's money goes to his sister.

BIOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING…

growing up he was exposed to;

Eli’s dad went to prison for an armed robbery of a bank when he was 3 and so she wouldn’t be caught for any crimes associated with him AKA the meth lab they ran in their house, Eli’s mother left him and his brother to be raised by their Dad’s adopted sister and their cousin Chris. After a week of nonstop crying, their aunt finally took them to the hospital and it turns out Eli and his brother Matthew were in withdrawal from the meth they were ingesting from the floorboards and walls of their home with their parents. This development left Eli with heart and numerous health issues. He spent his childhood in and out of hospitals and had surgeries. Outside of all the hospitals he had a good life. His aunt was the best parent he could have asked for and sometimes every few years his mom would just appear to surprise them and they got to spend a little time with her until she had to leave again.

There was one time when they were in 8th grade where they got to live with her for half the school year. This was also the time they learned their mother was a drug addict because she overdosed and Matthew had to give her mouth to mouth and Eli had to call 911, then before the ambulance arrived they had to hide down the block at a friends house and act like nothing was wrong and nothing happened so that they wouldn’t be seen and taken away from their mother. Then when their friend’s mother got the call that theirs had been taken to the hospital they had to pretend this was new information they didn’t know about and ever since this happened Eli and Matthew have never spoken about it to anyone. Not even each other. So… Underlying trauma.

Eli was a pretty good kid though. Raised by a single mother. Goofy. Class clown. Smart as all hell though. Really loved math. Took tap dancing classes. And taught himself close up magic. Yeah, he was a dork.

his occupational perspective;

Eli loves all of his jobs. He actually has a surprising amount of money, When he was a sophomore in college he managed to get an internship inside the writing room of a show in development at Cartoon Network called Total Drama Island and it wasn’t until he graduated college that he managed to get bumped up to a comedy writer in the writer's room and ended up lending his voice for characters on Total Drama: Pahkitew Island and The Ridonculous Race. He was paid for all of his work. Since the show ended he’s received residuals for his work and he’s lent his voice to other Cartoon Network and Adult Swim shows over the years.

He has a math degree, he has a teaching qualification and is on contract with a few school districts around Portland as a substitute teacher or a fill-in teacher for a few different schools. He goes to the classrooms he’s assigned to and tries to teach students math for the time that he’s there and he loves it. He jokes around with his students. At night, almost every night from 9pm - 3am he’s working the comedy clubs around Portland. Always working on new material. Most of his jokes are self-deprecating and he keeps it light and fun and dope. Occasionally gets paid for his time on stage, but doesn’t make much money from it, but he doesn’t need to.

Anaheim Ducks

This team better hope to god that Ondrej Kase and Rickard Rakell can make up for Corey Perry looks like his age these days. Gibson better be prepared for a lot of shots this year.

Arizona Coyotes

Please don't start your season without a regulation win in more than 20 games again. A healthy Antti Raanta will make you way more competitive.

Boston Bruins

That top line is going to be the best part of this team. It would be a shame if Tuukka Task were to regress this season. A real shame....

Buffalo Sabres

Jeff Skinner, Jack Eichel, and Ramus Dahlin the best defensive prospect you've had in decades. Look out, the climb from rock bottom has begun.

Calgary Flames

So you trade Hamilton for a younger still developing defenceman Noah Hanifin and forward Elias Lindholm. Then you guys decided to hire Bill Peters. The Hurricanes called: they don't want there old coach back.

Sergei Bobrovsky is the best player on this team. The most important player on this team. The reason this franchise is even relevant. Make sure you extend him. You can't afford to lost him. YOU. CANT.

Dallas Stars

New coach, and eight more years of Tyler Seguin. This team more than anything needs a balance of strong forechecking, puck moving defenseman, and Ben Bishop to stop getting hurt.

Detroit Red Wings

Ken Holland needs to just tell Red Wings fans he's rebuilding. With Zetterberg done for good. You better hope Larkin, Mantha, and Athanasiou make major strides this season.

Get McDavid some fucking forwards that can skate and shoot! And find someone who will take the Lucic contract. He needs to go. Oh! And get Talbot a actual back up too! That's literally all y'all need! (Maybe another defenseman won't hurt)

Start the season strong Panthers. Start the season with a winning record in October, and you might be consistent enough to make the post season. You've got the piece. Now get your shit together.

Los Angeles Kings

This team is old, big, and slow. A perfect team for the fast paced moder NHL! This team can still make the playoffs with Quick in net. But they really need some quality skating youth.

Minnesota Wild

Is Devan Dubnyk still your goalie? Yes? Then you a playoff bubble team congrats. This team feels fractured, veterans on their last few years, mild aged guys that overachieved, and young guys that are unproven. This will be an interesting year in the state of hockey.

Montreal Canadiens

This team has no natural scorers. The best center they're hoping for is a first round draft pick in Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who btw is 18 years old. Because this worked out so well before.... *Cough* Galchenyuk! *Cough* Carey Price will have it play like 2014 if they have want even a chance at the playoffs.

Nashville Predators

Pekka Rinne isn't getting any younger. While he defied his age last year. The Preds window of cup contention only stays open, if he plays at this ability again. Even with the solid defensive core the team has.

New Jersey Devils

Unless Taylor Hall has another Hart trophy winning season and Corey Schneider becomes the solid goalie that this team needs again. Y'all are missing the playoffs. It's that fucking simple.

New York Islanders

Mat Barzal is your future. That's the only bright spot for this team. Good luck trying to fill two areas this season with a bad hockey team, with no playoff hopes anymore.

New York Rangers

Admitting you have a problem is the first steps. The Rangers gave their fans a heads up that they closed the door on cup contention for a rebuild. A smart move. It a shame for the current fan base. The question remains. What happens to Henrik Lundqvist?

Ottawa Senators

This team is going to suck... No buts, ands, or ifs about it! You have a unintimidating forward core, a paper mache defense, and a goalie who use to good. This team is the Miami Marlins of hockey. Pathetic...

Philadelphia Flyers

Solid Forward core, up and coming defenseman that look really good. This team should be a playoff team, maybe even a contender- Oh shit your goaltending still sucks and is up in the air? That's a shame huh?

Pittsburgh Penguins

This team has some key injuries to players last season again the Capitals. This season, those players are older, and will have to still play like there younger to try and win a third cup in four years. At least y'all still have Crosby and Malkin.

San Jose Sharks

This team is the true cup contenders of the West. Well until either Vegas missed the post season, or they beat them. Eric Karlsson makes this team a true force of nature on paper. It's good to be a Sharks fan these days.

St. Louis Blues

One point. That's all it took for you to miss the playoffs, after a season of injury bug. Maybe a new season without the injury bug makes you a post season team? *Check the division teams* ok... Maybe a bubble team at best? I'm trying to be positive Blues fans. I'm trying.

Tampa Bay Lightning

This team will make it back to the playoffs. What the Lightning want to avoid is doing what they did against Washington in games 6 and 7. Avoid that and you'll do fine. Go Rang- I mean Bolts!

Toronto Maple Leafs

John Tavares, Mitch Marner, Austin Matthews. Three names, that have given the city of Toronto more hope of winning the Stanley Cup, than any other names in the last 40 years. If you can maybe get some better defenseman. This teams a cup contender. What a strange time it is.

Vancouver Canucks

Every sign at Rogers arena should say! Still Rebuilding. Come back next year. The Canucks have good pieces, but still need a bit more to make a new machine. They're on the right track. It just not this year for a completion date.

Vegas Golden Knights

After shocking the hockey/sports world, (And pissing off cry baby fans bases across the NHL) The Golden Knights lost some piece, the replaced them with players that are slightly younger, but just as good. Expect youth to step up and take this team to back to the top. Or they regress dramatically and they miss the playoffs because they over achieved hard last season!

Washington Capitals

The defending Stanley Cup champion Capitals! Will make the playoffs again, since they're basically the same team. Winning it again, is whole other issues. The team has remained relatively the same. The other teams in the division/conference didn't. Good luck champs.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets were a very solid team last year. Excellent forwards, great defenseman, but the thing that has propelled this team into cup contention; goaltending. Connor Charles Hellebuyck is your Carey Price. Do. Not. Over. Work him. The team has grown a proper defensive responsibility. Rest won't kill the guy. Trust me. When the playoffs come. It'll be worth it.

Week 3 Power Ranking

Work week so I missed the majority of the weekend games. Let me just watch a few Akshon Esports highlights.... Wait, what do you mean I can’t do that?

20. Washington Justice

No matter how bad the next team gets they’ll never be as bad as the Justice.

19. Los Angeles Valiant

My sweet child what has happened to you. Was the EU staff and players that important??? Was moving Kariv off of flex support to DPS and Kuki off of Main Tank to Main Support too dangerous of moves??? Maybe its time to invest into serious talent instead of expecting the team’s system to pull you out of it. A number of players are still walking around without contracts. But sadly a good chuck of them are signed to Academy teams (something you seem to be lacking).

18. Florida Mayhem

I don’t want to rank them this low. They are currently playing the best Overwatch of there entire existence as the Mayhem McGravy is a great breathe of fresh air. Apply is letting them bench Tviq (they’ve need to do that for a very long time). And its let Tviq focus more on his strengths. I really hope they carry over this improvement into Stage 2.

17. Los Angeles Gladiators

Everyone’s spirits seemed to be dampened on the Gladiators. A little wet so to speak. Like there own personal rain cloud that won’t leave them alone. Beach is nice for a day but the Gladiators are drowning right now. Mite be time to shelve Hydration till a different meta appears.

16. Boston Uprising

To be honest ranking the next 10 teams is going be god damn impossible but I have to start somewhere. And fuck this team’s GM. HIRE A HEAD COACH. Give Asking a 2 way contract before you lose him. Honestly Asking should be on the main roster just to prepare him for a potential DPS meta.

15. Houston Outlaws

Look to be figuring out there issues slowly. But they mite be 1 step behind the competition again like last year. Seeing Coolmatt, Bani, and Linkzr back on stage should give fans a lot of hope.

14. Chengdu Hunters

My favorite team of Stage 1. Meta breaking team comps. Can’t seem to keep it together once teams figure out how to counter play them. Its hard to tell if they are being countered and being hard stopped by teams. Or if they are being countered and get flustered so they play bad. Would be extremely dangerous in any playoff situation this year. I wouldn’t want to face Jinmu and Ameng when they have nothing to lose.

13. London Spitfire

Still look pretty bad. Honestly don’t think this is the meta for them. Profit and Birdring like to make decisions and sometimes they can tilt from being stuck in Brig jail or from the other team knowing what they want to do. Meta is very punishing to initial aggression.

12. Guangzhou Charge

Fun team that’s figured out some secrets to off meta. They don’t seem overly strong at current meta and aren’t even the best teams at off meta. But they are willing to take just enough risks to find value. Depending on matchup in the future they could stealing more than just a few extra wins.

11. Seoul Dynasty

Difficult to rank the Dynasty. Honestly Ana goats and or Sombra goats is there biggest advantage right now. They can heavily enable Fissure but its just not optimal sadly. But they are already adding new players and pushing to improve. Already better than last year’s team.

10. Shanghai Dragons

Gamsu fixes all. One of the strongest Main Tanks in the league. Shanghai is stacked with talent and he is giving them structure and space to work in. This team can only improve as the season continues.

9. Dallas Fuel

The last 2 teams here could be flipped next week because they go again for a rematch already. Dallas is a strange team. Either they dominate or are dominated this season. The only exception being the slugfest against Shanghai.

8. Paris Eternal

Who even knows. I don’t know.

7. Hangzhou Spark

Have looked really good and really bad. Could be shoved to the side if they are forced to play off meta. Have a really strong team but they don’t seem prepped at all for a DPS meta this stage.

6. Toronto Defiant

LOL this must be a typo. Wait, its not?! Bishop is a legit miracle work. Super strong and consistent team that just appeared out of thin air. Dark horse of stage 1 easily.

5. Philadelphia Fusion

I’m always super high on the Fusion and I don’t know why. They honestly need to play Fragi more just to create some aggression on the team. I know Fragi goes against the current state of the game even the way the shot callers prefer to work on the team. But sometimes you need to be on Ball and in the other teams backline. #FreeEqoFromBrigJail

4. San Francisco Shock

Stupid good. I notice early on something strange about the team. All there dumb players are playing extremely smart in this meta. From Super to Sinatraa the difference in actual IQ to in game IQ is astronomical. They are getting the most out of the top tier talent they have. Amazing coaching and player development.

3. Atlanta Reign

Seem to be riding on the razors edge that is Dafran’s mental health. But damn if his teammates don’t legit love the fuck out of him and the coaching staff is seemingly doing what they can to help him balance work life right now. They took a risk on a player and its paying off.

2. Vancouver Titans

Number 2 because they can’t be number 1. Best team (not 6 individual talents) in the world. The dedication and fruition of years of hard work finally realized. No group of players and staff deserves this success more than they do. Long live the true kings of Overwatch.

1. New York Excelsior

I hear it coming. The confidence. The toxicity. Oh Jjonak, you feel untouchable don’t you. Nenne is there anything you can’t do? Don’t you hear the footsteps? Don’t you feel the chill run down your back from the overarching shadow around you? Something is growing closer behind you. And its much larger than you could ever hope to be.

Catching Up: Three Notable News Items from Last Week: Smart Contracts, AI Referrals and Women of Legal Tech

Because I was traveling last week to attend the ctrl ALT del conference of the Association of Legal Technologists (which I wrote about here), I fell behind on some notable news stories from the world of legal technology. Here are three:

Monax Launches Blockchain Smart Contracts Platform

Last year, I wrote here about the launch of the Agreements Network, a blockchain-based platform developed by the company Monax and a consortium of allied law firms and legal technology companies. I later interviewed the founder of Monax, Casey Kuhlman, for my LawNext podcast.

The Agreements Network was intended to serve as a decentralized platform for law firms to productize contracts as scalable “active” (or smart) agreements and for consumers of legal services, mostly smaller businesses, to realize cost savings and greater security through a blockchain-based contract management system.

Last week, Monax announced the public beta launch of the first application built on that network, the Monax Platform. Monax describes it as a “relationship-centric workspace” for small-to-midsized businesses that enables them to leverage digital contracts to control risk and drive business systems.

According to Monax, the platform includes tools that allow businesses to create legally binding and auto-enforceable smart contracts, and then track and visualize their contractual obligations in a real-time, secure environment. Businesses can also use it to automate their contract templates and workflows.

The platform has two components: the Monax Dealspace and the Monax Studio. The Dealspace allows users and their counter-parties to delegate and coordinate team contractual tasks or approvals, automate repetitive contractual tasks, track the state of contractual obligations, dynamically load contractual tasks or approvals based on the contract’s state, and perform audits on legal obligations.

The Studio enables users to graphically create and test their obligations’ workflows in a drag-and-drop environment that does not require programming knowledge.

In Florida, Using AI to Refer Lawyers

The Florida Bar, working with legal technology company legal.io, has dramatically revamped the client portal for its lawyer referral service, with a modern design and enhanced access to online legal resources. Given that Florida’s LRS makes more than 70,000 referrals a year, those enhancements would be notable in themselves. However, there is another aspect that makes it even more notable.

The new service (lrs.floridabar.org) uses artificial intelligence to “intelligently” guide consumers to the right lawyer for any legal situation. The system uses machine learning to classify a consumer’s request into appropriate practice areas. The system was trained on over 150,000 historical referrals.

This is similar in concept to the Learned Hands project I wrote about in October, a joint project of Suffolk Law School’s Legal Innovation and Technology Lab and Stanford Law School’s Legal Design Lab, with funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts, in which a game is used to train an algorithm to identify the specific legal issues in consumers’ descriptions of their legal problems.

With the Florida portal, when a consumer’s request fits within a geographic and legal area covered by the LRS, the service will automatically suggest attorneys who are available and able to assist. The client can immediately select an attorney and schedule a consultation, 24/7. LRS staff are able to monitor these automated referrals and make additional referrals as needed.
