New Look Sabres: GM 11 - CBJ

I was going to save Rob Ray using the term “Gloryhole” to describe Artemi Panarin’s second goal for the P.S. but I couldn’t help myself and that is just everything you need to know about Rob Ray the broadcaster in one hilarious live TV misspeak. Was he misspeaking? I feel like he used the word totally seriously just not fully realizing what it means… you know in sexual parlay. I actually missed that epic call, I had turned off the stream; not in rage, OT does make the heart race, but I was at my wife’s grandma’s house deep in the Finger Lakes. They aren’t the people to forego a game in the World Series for an October Sabres game. Rob Ray had a pretty classic gaff about that too but this isn’t a Rob Ray blog, this is New Look Sabres. I got to say, I don’t know if I would go through the effort to watch a stream on my phone on Saturday night for last year’s Sabres. This game is pretty indicative of the New Look Sabres I envisioned naming this blog. The Columbus Blue Jackets have proven themselves to be the frustration factory of hockey in the playoffs and if the Sabres ever want to get back to those they will need to beat some CBJs this season. The Buffalo Sabres did not look out of place against these guys and that says a lot.

Tage Thompson made himself useful and got an assist on Kyle Okposo’s first goal of the game crashing the net 98 seconds into the game. Two thoughts on that: Tage Thompson sat the last several games and several Smart Sabres folks pointed out the uselessness of not sending him down. He has taken his time to get comfortable in the system and didn’t look great but if he can start producing he ought to stay. I won’t be offended if he goes down at this point but hey, silver linings, right? Second Thought: Crashing that net. Look at most of the goals the Sabres have scored so far this season, thirty goals to be exact, and the majority will be crashing that net. If the Sabres score goals I’m not upset but is crashing the net the substitute for all our guys not shooting from the point? Just a thought, it’s more rhetorical, I had a lot of time to think about this game. Pierre-Luc Dubois shot from the point. After receiving a pass from Panarin he shot one high on Linus Ullmark. Five minutes later Jeff Skinner found a puck sent from McCabe and launched it two-hole. For the second time in two games a Sabres goal got challenged and stood. I could get used to this. The Sabres would enter the first intermission up 2-1 on the home team. Then the second period happened.

The Buffalo Sabres shut off. They got a single powerplay opportunity but it was the first period since maybe the San Jose game when we saw the Sabres just fall flat. Did they play their game? Perhaps they did: Jack Eichel screeched in on Joonas Korpisalo and got robbed. It wasn’t Sabres who scored this period. Artemi Panarin was a man on a mission scoring 94 seconds into the second in a goal that I will say was sick because I, like anyone with two eyes for hockey, want that guy on my team. He made Ristolainen look like he didn’t know ice is slippery. Those cannon blasts just kept coming and Cam Atkinson scored twice 32 seconds apart to put the Jackets up 4-2 through forty minutes of hockey. I am not even going to defend my boy Linus Ullmark in this period. The whole team sleep walked through this period. Then the New Look Sabres got back in the final frame. Jason Pominville scored on a behind-the-net setup from Jack Eichel to get the game within one two and a half minutes in. Two minutes later the Sabres highlight of this game happened. It took eleven games into his first full NHL season but Casey Mittelstadt scored one, a sausy one on the powerplay but it was his. That’s one monkey we all ought to be happy is off our favorite child’s back. The two teams traded chances for the rest of regulation; one shot by Columbus’ Anthony Duclair was taking a gentle stroll toward the line when Sam Reinhart fished it out. That may have been the play that secured the point in this game as this one went to a brief OT before Artemi Panarin out maneuvered three misaligned Sabres and won it. Sabres lost in OT 5-4 and altogether you probably love what you glean from the Blue and Gold team in this game.

I brought up crashing the net earlier because I think it’s a really interesting point of study in Phil Housley’s system. I am no expert, that’s kind of one of this blog’s calling cards, but does a net-crashing team not play fundamentally differently than a shoot first team? This league is overwhelmingly going in a speed-first direction and that’s made defenses slimmer and agile. Not many teams beat the shit out of you in front of the net anymore. It’s a good strategy for now, but I am just not certain how sustainable it is. It could also be a fair analysis of this team’s strengths by the coaching staff. I looked at those thirty goals Buffalo has scored, aw yeah its cool having that many goals through only eleven games, and very few lead you to believe any skater on this team prefers to shoot from the point. Jack Eichel’s overly-selfless pass-first mentality is well documented but I couldn’t find anyone really who jumps out as an honest-to-God shooter on this team. Kyle Okposo, who has looked like a new acquisition as of late thank God, stands out as something of a shooter but who else? Conor Sheary scores slappers from close up, minus well just call him Lumberjack Conor at this point, Jeff Skinner has scored more of his goals rather tight in there and I’ll leave Sam Reinhart alone for now. Jason Pominville even shoots from a place he can hear the goalies breathe. Maybe I had too much time to think about this game.

This team looks capable of comebacks and that is as refreshing as it gets. More than one observer across the bloggers, beat reporters and newsmen said following this game that this matchup last year… or really any season since Obama’s first term, would’ve turned into a rout. Buffalo comes back now and that’s what good teams do. I will gladly take a few OT heartbreaks that result in a point than fighting the urge to turn off the game before it’s over. Speaking of things I don’t want to turn off: how do you like this blog? Yea, I am talking to you with the shirt. The Next Chapter Hulk Gets Delivered!

   Hey Farm Hands,

         Today is a very exciting day the 600 gallon reef tank called, The Hulk, was delivered to its final destination. Leading up to The Hulk delivery was stressful. This was my first time designing a reef tank from a custom aquarium company to build and make my dream come true. The company Concept Aquariums out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada took on my project. Dave Guan, the owner of Concept personally seen over the project and was very professional and easy to work with. What was great is we had a lot in common and more than just fish tanks. When I got the text from Dave that my tank was finished, he sent me pictures of my finished tank, the stand and the sump. I had Concept build me the whole package. Why not? Then it’s complete and no more headaches. Trying to find a company to build a sump can be a pain. I asked two different companies to get a price for this build. One didn’t even care to messaged me back and the other company said they would then didn’t bother getting back to me either. I won’t name drop any names because I am a little more professional then that. 

TIP: Companies if you want peoples business, you should return a customers calls or emails. If you say you’re going to do the project and you don’t then that messes with a persons time frame for there tank setup and build. You should be a little more considerate then that. 

So moving along, now that the tank is complete it’s time to ship The Hulk. Dave setup everything from his end. To ship 1550 pounds of aquarium and gear, it was $250 flat shipping rate to the closest depo to me. I thought that was a great price this tank is coming from Calgary to Ottawa! So the closest depo was in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at 2740 Sheffield Road. From that location it is about 45 mins south to my home. So next was to get the tank from 2740 Sheffield Road to my home. I have never taken on getting that big of a tank or that much glass before, let alone a delivery to my home. I was going to rent a truck and take on the challenge myself. But the more I though about it, it was getting stressful. What if everything goes wrong? I put a lot of money into this tank, I need it home all in one piece. So sitting around with my buddy Rich Bowie I started to tell him about my tank project and how I was trying to get The Hulk home. Rich speaks up and says, his long time friend Tom has a delivery company that handles all kinds of large projects like grand panios and that he would be the guy. So I called up Tom and he said not a problem. That took off so much stress knowing everything was all lined up. So, it’s Sunday morning and Tom and his brother Steven show up to my home the delivery truck sitting at the road, I didn’t even know they where here I had just rolled out of bed. I guess I had missed there phone call. It was finally time to get The Hulk in the house. They opened the back of the truck and this was my first time actually seeing The Hulk in person. I was like holly hell thats a big tank. As I was thinking in my head, “What the hell was I thinking!?” and “How are we going to get this into the house!?” Thankfully, Tom and Steve had everything all planned out. These guys where awesome and they have such great personalities. Very smart guys. So we took the front door off to get the stand, sump and glass into the house. The only problem was the tank was just a few inches too big to get into my fish room through the front door. So we had to move the truck to the back of the house and get the tank onto my deck. The only problem was we couldn’t get the tailgate of the truck close enough. So Tom and Steve seen that my neighbour had wooden pallets and wanted to build a bridge using them as a support for the ramps. I was like, you are kidding right the tank alone is 900 pounds and there is only four of us. Nope he wasn’t kidding they though it through and made a plan. That’s what we did. We ran across the street and grabbed six skids and made a platform. And when you watch the video below you will see why it was so stressful. What I can say is The hulk is sitting in my man cave safe and sound and everything went swimmingly. A big thank you to Tom and Steve for successful delivering me my new dream tank, you guys kicked ass! I am the kind of person that tries to do everything himself and what I have learned in this hobby is sometimes you need some help, and that letting the pros take the wheel means everything will turn out right. Bruins showed signs of life in the 3rd period against them but ultimately fell in the shootout. All throughout the goal-tending has been fantastic by both Greiss and Varly. With Eberle now back we will have to see if he can recapture the magic he has with Barzal, which was missing at the start of this season. Even without Matt Martin, Cizikas and Clutterbuck combined to have an outstanding week. On defense, Adam Pelech is playing like a top d-man. Other teams and fans will hear more about him if he keeps it up, but for now he is one of the most underrated players around.4 (4.76)St. Louis Blues412-3-33-0-0The bad news is that the Blues really aren't playing the best hockey they're capable of. The good news is that we're still winning. Many close games but the duo of DP57 and ROR is dragging us to some wins, our D is stabalizing, and our goaltending is proving good enough to compete. Would like to see some depth pieces begin to contribute more, and the loss of Tarasenko is just beginning to set in, but at the end of the day we're leading the Western Conference and we can still definitely get better from here. There also might not be a more trusted ownership/GM combo in the League than Army and Stillman. It took about two weeks, but the Avs finally figured out chemistry against Nashville & Columbus. The new top line is fun, not as skilled, but no players work harder than Donskoi and Calvert and Mackinnon benefits from the chaos they create and they benefit from the chaos he creates. Francouz has been sufficient in Grubauer's absence but isn't really playing himself into a potential 1B role. Avs start a Western Canadian Road trip this week and look to keep the momentum from the last couple games. First up a big 4 point game in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Calder Watch: Makar had an insane week, with points in all three games a 3 point night and a 2 goal game with his first GWG. He is now at 17 points in 17 games which ties him for third in scoring amoung NHL dmen, Crazy!7 (9.82)Nashville Predators39-5-31-1-1I'm away from my computer this week so I'll keep this one to a single point: /u/dabz14, I'm a true believer after the Red Wings game this past week. Blown leads in the 3rd period has plagued the team lately and really needs to change.12 (12.91)Vancouver Canucks-39-6-30-3-1Ever since rushing to jump on the ill-conceived and somewhat forced "Team Like That marketing campaign, the Canucks have indeed become a team like that. The team like that has since lost 5 of their last 6, with their only win coming against a floundering Sharks team. Over this period the powerplay has lost some the luster shown earlier in the year, and Canucks fans must face the tough reality that a team (like that) might not win 70% of its games this year. The club remains competitive, but this string of losses should slide them down to the middle of the pack in our power rankings - the "playoff bubble" position most anticipated the team would inhabit at the start of the season.13 (13.41)Toronto Maple Leafs29-6-42-1-1The Leafs are a confusing team. The week started with a sloppy 3-1 win against the Kings on Tuesday which made it a two game winning streak, which was extended on a 2-1 OT win against the Golden Knights (Did you see Ceci's beautiful setup for Pacioretty!?), which was won by captain Tavares himself. Unfortunately that streak ended Saturday night, after the Flyers got shootout revenge, highlighted by Marner taking an awkward tumble. After trying to take another shift, he was sent to the dressing room and shut down for the game, and after an MRI, for four weeks. Looks like leaf fans are still gonna annoy r/hockey by saying this team still isn't fully healthy yet :). Is that an excuse for letting up 4 goals in the first against the Blackhawks? Oh it's the second half of a back-to-back. That excuse. Made the game close, but not close enough. Overall, another confusing week for leafs fans14 (13.5)Arizona Coyotes-19-6-21-2-115 (14.18)Calgary Flames110-7-32-0-1The Flames had a good week, getting 5 out of a possible 6 points. The team appears to have a completely different effort level when they are down in the third period, having multiple late goals to tie both Arizona and St. Louis, forcing overtime. If only they could play with the same sense of urgency at all times. Johnny Gaudreau continues a large slump. While he's still getting points, he doesn't look like himself and his turnovers and defensive game make him feel like a liability at times. The Flames have already played 20 games this year, so hopefully their schedule slowing down a bit will give them some time to solve a few issues.16 (15.18)Anaheim Ducks-59-8-10-2-0This season feels like a rerun. Looks like a losing home stand came 1 month earlier than last year. A poor effort against the oilers after 4 days off. Similarly poor effort against the wild. I don’t see the fight. I don’t see the ducks ready to start any game lately. Victor Mete is making up for all the goals he didn’t score to start his career and it helping beat the Bruins makes it all the better. Ryan Poehling finally has first few games of the season but if all Julien is going to do is play him for 9 minutes a game I would rather see him getting more time in the AHL.19 (15.97)Philadelphia Flyers210-5-24-0-0Its been a very Fly week this week, not a Die week. Myers has been on fire since scoring his first of the season, Coots, Lindblom, and TK line is actual sex on ice, our goaltending is stabilizing, and we are making teams regret starting their backup against us. 3 games in 4 nights against teams in playoff spots, and having pulled a majority of the points from it means we are doing a good hockey. Giroux with an absolute slapper in the SO, Moose and Hart are being the tandem we need them to be, and the team responding well under AV means things are well. We may never go pointless in a game again. Also PROVY PLEASE JUST KEEP YOUR GAME SIMPLE YOU ARE TOO GOOD TO BE PLAYING AS POORLY AS YOU HAVE BEEN RECENTLY. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk pt.2. Good game against the Rangers, Monty was bad, but the team rallied to with it. The Panthers don't give up and that's great.22 (20.74)Dallas Stars-8-8-21-0-1Only two weeks this game. Big win over the Avalanche and a OT loss to the Jets. Standouts? Faksa, Bishop. Takeaways? This one was tough and really showed how young this team is, but a game like this was necessary. Next, we bounced back against the Wings by winning solidly 5-1. The next day, we got to see vintage Hank against the Canes. Even though we got outshot 47-19, we somehow walked out with a 4-2 win. To cap off the week, we had a shooting gallery of a game against the Panthers, falling 6-5 in the shootout. Some positives to come out of the week were that the kids are finally catching their stride and really developing. Kakko, Chytil, and Fox have looked great the past few games. Lindgren also deserves a shoutout for his play lately. Strome continues to put up points as well. Here's to another successful and entertaining week (also hopefully Lias gets more minutes).24 (24.41)San Jose Sharks37-10-13-0-0Much better week for the Sharks, but there's still a lot of work to be done. They were able to squeeze out 3 wins, but almost blew late leads against the Hawks and Wild. If the Sharks want to be back in the playoff picture they'll have to clean it up and play consistently tight defence for the next two weeks, with the upcoming divisional games against good teams like the Oilers and Vegas. The forwards are looking better and they've had some periods with really good defence, but they can't have those 10 minute stretches where they almost blow the entire thing, because good divisional teams will pounce on those opportunities.25 (24.47)Columbus Blue Jackets-16-8-31-2-0Bemstrom got his first and his second career goals this week. The two games we were pretty close, which is an improvement over our 5 game skid, but we're still 1-6-1 in our last 8. Things are looking grim if we don't improve by American Thanksgiving.26 (26.5)Chicago Blackhawks-6-7-42-1-1After a disconcerting California road trip, the Blackhawks managed to go 2-0-1 against the Canucks, Penguins, and Leafs. Kane has 5G, 6A and points in each of our last 6 games. Keith has been playing well, and is averaging over 25 min in ATOI, which is around his career average, but is significantly higher than the past 2 seasons. Lehner has been fantastic, and is 2nd to only Greiss in SV%.27 (27.21)Minnesota Wild26-10-12-1-0Wild fans are in this weird spot right now where they want the youngsters to show signs of development but the collective team is being cheered on to tank. Kevin Fiala has shown, to quote the GM-who-shall-not-be-named, "gamebreaker" qualities in the past few games. Jordan Greenway and Joel Eriksson Ek have finally looked in the mirror and realized they have big bodies meant for a physical brand of hockey. Ryan Donato...well, he's still looking pretty lost. Can't win them all I suppose. As much as this franchise needs a number one pick, it did feel good to see four pucks go past Mr. Darcy on Saturday night.28 (28.03)Ottawa Senators36-9-13-1-0With the Sens recording 5 wins in their last 8 games, I'm suddenly feeling a sense of...what's the opposite of "shame"? Less shame. That's it. Make no mistakes folks - even though they've had a good week thanks to the heroic efforts of guys like Pageau and Nilsson playing absurdly well, this team is going to finish in the bottom 5. They NEED to finish in the bottom 3 in any case, so as to have the best chance of picking up a generational forward talent at this stacked draft. This means not winning against other bottom tier teams like the Kings and Rangers, which we unfortunately were unable to do this week. Good games for team morale but certainly not for draft position!!29 (28.26)New Jersey Devils-15-7-42-2-02-2-0 This week, nothing too out of the ordinary. Back in Sept. r/devils did a straw poll about Hynes' leash and most said he had until Halloween to turn it around. A week after the devils are 5-7-4 and severely under-performing for the talent level of the roster. This roster shouldn't be 5-11. Shero should already have a list in his mind at this point to replace Hynes. The Good: Blackwood seems to have rebounded from his rocky start and has taken the starter reins from Cory. Hughes is still playing great. He isnt always scoring, but seeing him play with hustle every shift is amazing to see. The Bad: Hall is cursed. He has 2 goals on 59 shots, only 3%, while his career shooting percent is over 10%. The Ugly: We're still barely 0.500 hockey week to week and sitting at the bottom of the metro, only 1 point above the Sens ins the same 16 games. The talk has already started on Hall's fetching price come trade deadline time.30 (28.56)Los Angeles Kings-55-11-10-2-1I was fortunate enough to watch the Kings play the Leafs in Toronto this past week. We look slower than molasses right now and its a pretty boring brand of hockey almost worse than the ‘wear you down’ of Sutter’s time as coach. Some of the young guys are doing well but its crazy to think that this core won 2 cups.31 (29.59)Detroit Red Wings-16-12-12-2-0Robbie Fabbri and Jonathan Bernier stole the week for the Red Wings. With a jam packed schedule of four games the Wings continued their walk of shame with piss poor effort against the Preds and breakdowns against the Rangers. Jimmy Howard gets the start and the hook in both games. Then the trade for Fabbri happens and Bernier gets the start in both games against Boston and Vegas and now the parade planning begins. In reality, the Bruins were at the tail-end of a 11-2-1 stretch and Vegas was back to back after getting beaten up by the Capitals. However, this is what we should expect from the Wings. The plan is to stay competitive and transition to the next phase of the rebuild. Detroit needs to be in these games against top teams who are struggling and limiting their chances. We've put together a moving checklist to help you break it down week by week and make the tasks flow easy As you think about your move into your new place, we'd recommend that you plan out beforehand (especially if you're hiring movers) to look at your new floor plan and create a moving plan to help have items boxed accordingly, it's also recommended that you obtain a few quotes, create budgets, and track your expenses for the move and put them in a specific 'moving' folder.  8 - 7 weeks before moving Contact moving companies and van lines to obtain estimates, there are many sites online that can provide quotes online as well, if you're not using a moving company, start warming up your friends to the idea of your moving day :) Create a 'donation' pile of items that you cannot sell or discard of, but that would be useful for others For any unwanted items, create ads on Kijiji and begin selling them, you can also consider hosting a garage sale if you have a lot of items  For pet owners who are changing their Veterinarian, we recommend that veterinarian records be transferred early on  School Records / Day Care and other schooling arrangements should be made early on before you move as well  Medical and Dental records should also be transferred, you can ask your practitioners for referrals  Connect with your insurance company and have your current policy changed for the possession date,  discuss coverage while moving for contents, If you are not insured currently, call and obtain quotes from Calgary Insurance companies, we recommend calling a few direct writers (i.e. your bank) as well as Insurance Brokers who write insurance policies for different insurance companies Gym memberships should be transferred or cancelled depending on where you're moving from and to Obtain all legal and financial records needed, file them safely  6 Week mark before you move  If Moving to a new city, you can also obtain referrals for other professionals you work with (lawyers, accountants, etc)  Select the moving company and plan out the dates for your move Coordinate with your Real Estate Partner REALTOR on possession date walk through times and other items that may need to be scheduled  Create a list of valuables and items that are difficult, or impossible to replace, these should not be put in with the movers and should be carried with you, or shipped through another more secured method Create an inventory in each room of what you're keeping, moving, giving away, etc If you subscribe to the local paper, cancel your subscription, and consider signing up for new service at your new home Contact your alarm system provider and make arrangements to coordinate your services  5 Weeks out before you move Visit your post office and setup mail forwarding and change of address forms Connect with your utility companies and schedule dates for disconnects Collect items for the move, packing boxes, supplies, etc  Connect with your new utility companies and start arranging for services to be connected for your move in at your new place Look into the parking situation, as well as elevators (if you're new place has them) for moving day arrangements so there's no confusion on moving day If needed, look into arrangements for short or long term storage options 4 Weeks away Create your moving reservation, confirm they're good to go, or plan arrangements with friends for the moving date, don't forget to supply fuel for your friends if they're helping you move :)  Consider Travel arrangements for your pets  Host your garage sale Take All Items to your preferred charity  If you have any local services like landscapers, inform them of your move New to the City? Look up Calgary.ca and arrange (If desired) your Tax Instalment Payment Plan TIPP for your new property  3 Weeks Before the Big Day  Ensure you have picked up any outstanding items from vendors or friends (tools, dry cleaning, packages, etc) Return any items you may have borrowed or taken out (friends tools, library books, etc)  Properly dispose of items that you cannot move safely (i.e. flammables)  If your moving from out of town, consider having your vehicle inspected to ensure the road trip to your new home is safe and secre Have your automobile registration switched over if moving from out of province, or have your address changed  If you currently live in a building / apartment consider arrangements for your move out day, elevator, parking, key drop off, etc Confirm you have a plan for live items like plants and pets for the move 2 Weeks to go Double check that all of your services have been cancelled or transferred or setup at your new home Gas, Electricity, Water, Telephone, Mobile Phone, TV, Internet, Post Office   Meal prep for the move Your fridge will need to be cleaned out, setting meals out a few weeks before will keep you on point, ready to move, and curtail any full fridge issues on moving out day Confirm your moving day arrangements for pets and children, often a friend or family member watching them makes the move in a lot easier and stress free as it's one less thing you have to worry about and watch during your move Close out or transfer your banking to a local branch near your new home, if you have safety deposit boxes, you should have these emptied out as well, and ensure any creditors know of your move as well (auto loans, credit cards, etc) Ensure you have a place / folder / or box that has all your important and valuable items, create a 'fist night' box as well, for your new home, this will make sure you have access to necessities like toilet paper, paper towel, common tools, flashlights, etc 1 Week Before your big move Empty out your fridge 24 hours before the day you move out Clean out your Deep Freeze and depending on frost build up, you'll need to consider having it turned off and cleaned out before the move Confirm utilities will be setup at your new place Depending on how you're moving or who you're moving with, consider emptying out any gas powered tools  Ensure you have all your prescriptions and medications on hand and supplied for the next few weeks Empty out any hoses or  items that will carry water before the move Inform your friends, family, and others about your new address and details Check appliances like the dishwasher, or stove and make sure they're empty of your belongings  It's a good idea to make note of your utility meters with pictures, document the home and its condition before you leave as well with pictures, this will cover you in case there's a dispute as to the condition you left it or where your meters were when you left. Moving To Calgary Day Check your tires and vehicle for safety Leave anything necessary (keys, garage remotes, etc) at your old place, document, and make note to parties that need to know of their location Pack smart If you stuck to pre-planning for your move, you will fly breeze through the move and have a great order for loading items making the unload easier Check every nook and cranny for personal items, storage areas, closets, etc  Document any damage caused by movers if applicable Review your home inventory checklist and make sure everything made it safely Replace any locks on doors (optional)  Perform a walkthrough with your agent (most likely before moving day) check appliances and the home to ensure things are as you saw them when purchased and expected Settling in your new home Get to know your neighbours  Find out your recycling, compost, and garbage schedule  See if your community you live in has a website, setup any HOA payments, if you live in a lake community like Auburn Bay you can go to the community centre and setup your lake access Host a house warming party for your friends, family, and colleagues Confirm previous utilities are cancelled and that there are no outstanding debts owed. Made by Google Pop-Ups Woo Shoppers in New York and LA

Google is taking to the streets this week with two pop-up stores opening on Thursday, Oct. 19 in New York City’s Flatiron district and West Hollywood in Los Angeles, to showcase, demonstrate and whet appetites for its latest Made by Google products.

The psychedelic pop-ups are open through Dec. 31, just in time for the holiday shopping season—and just as the Made by Google store in New York’s Soho area did last year.

Venturing north of Soho, this time around the NYC pop-up is being called Google @ Flatiron as it’s located at the south end of the Flatiron District just west of Union Square—at the corner of 110 Fifth Avenue and 16th Street—while the LA store is located at 8552 Melrose Avenue. Both stores will be open from 10AM to 8PM daily in their respective time zones.

Visitors can check out products from the Made for Google collection unveiled on October 4th, including Pixel 2 smartphones, premium Chromebook Pixelbook and the Pixelbook Pen stylus.

In addition to trying the Daydream View VR headset, visitors can check out other Made by Google devices: Pixel Buds, Bluetooth headphones able to translate 40 languages and for smart homes, the Google Home Mini (being promoted through a separate series of mini pop-ups in Canada and the U.S.) and Google Home Max.

The New York City pop-up was teased by Google’s iconic colors in the windows of the former Joe Fresh flagship at Fifth and 16th.

It’s a chance, of course, for hands-on interaction by consumers with Google’s latest products and to purchase whatever they like.

It’s not the first time that Google has created a physical store and brand experience to bring consumers into its expanding world of smart devices. Google, Interbrand’s #2 Best Global Brand, is also promoting its new donut-sized Mini smart speaker with donut-filled pop-ups in the U.S. and Canada.

Last year, Google’s pop-up shop on Spring Street in New York’s downtown Soho neighborhood featured the Pixel, Google Home, and Daydream VR, but for demo only. Anyone who wished to purchase could follow up at Verizon or Best Buy retail stores.

That pop-up experience included an IKEA-esque living room and kitchen setup for testing Google Home’s features in a cozy setting, as The Verge noted: “a Daydream VR area where you can sit on swivel low-poly rock chairs and try on the VR headsets, and a cool lighting installation where you can get your photo taken with a Pixel phone, which is meant to demonstrate the Pixel’s low-lighting photography capabilities.”

Customers were greeted by a “Pixel wall” with multiple rotating colored blocks (aka pixels) displaying different images: “a physical representation of the screens we look at constantly, and it definitely sets the quirky tone that you’ll find throughout Google’s space.”

North of the border, Google last year partnered with Best Buy in four Canadian cities with Google shops in Mississauga’s Heartland Town Centre, along with three others in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Janell Fischer, Director of Retail Marketing at Google, commented at the time: “We’re proud of the collaboration with Best Buy and their new Experience Stores, particularly as the concept aims to enhance the traditional way of shopping and aligns with Google’s immersive approach.”

“Google shops bring a whole new way for shoppers to experience and interact with our products, complete with trained Google guides who will be onsite to offer one-on-one tech help.” Shoppers could experience Portal, an immersive super-sized display and ‘fly’ over the planet through Google Earth.

Google opened its first branded store in the UK in 2015 when The Google Shop launched at the Currys PC World flagship in London. The in-store boutique sold Android devices, Chromebooks and Chromecast dongles, offered tutorials on Google products and demoed Google Apps.

The brick-and-mortar holiday retail tradition began in 2013 when Google opened a series of pop-up shops to show off the Nexus 7, Chromecast, and the latest Chromebooks called Winter Wonderlabs. In and around six cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Sacramento, Washington, DC, and Paramus, NJ., a giant snow globe shot slow motion video of consumer’s antics in a CGI snowfall.

“The Wonderlabs signal an even further interest by Google into retail, something that it hasn’t had much of a need for until recently, as The Verge commented. “While it’s hard to imagine a larger expansion for now, even this limited marketing shows Google has some serious confidence in its latest products.”
