The Book of the Long Sun, by Gene Wolfe (1993 - 1996) - 4/5
Been a minute since I've written a book review, and it's because I chomped my way through both of these tomes and then went straight through to the end of the Short Sun trilogy before even stopping to think about Long Sun. In retrospect, I should have done this sooner.
The Book of the Long Sun is the second quadrilogy in Gene Wolfe's twelve-book Solar Cycle, and while it exists within the same general universe as New Sun, and can be connected directly—and sometimes loosely—via the larger powers and technologies at play, Long Sun is a very different book on multiple fronts. The most obvious of which is the third person perspective. Wolfe takes a different spin on the unreliable narrator approach here, and once again you will find yourself going back and reevaluating how much of the story was fantasy, embellishment, or even projection—none of which is really that crucial to enjoying the plot, by the way, but it adds an extra layer of appreciation for whose who like to dig. While I find Wolfe's third person narration a little less engaging on a philosophical level, he makes up for it by leaning heavily (sometimes too far) into dialogue. Instead of Severian musing to himself over every action he takes, we have long conversations between a plethora of characters that often span tens of pages. These scenes can drag on, but Wolfe's character work is incredibly nuanced and rewards your attention (or should I say punishes your lack of...?). I mean I would probably kill myself if I was locked in a room with Patera Remora for even five minutes; the way Wolfe painstakingly writes out his idiosyncratic speech pattern is infuriating to follow at times, but at least there is usually a more coherent character in attendance to provide clarity.
The pacing of Long Sun is also noticeably slower than New Sun, at least at first. I actually found the first two books (Nightside and Lake) to be the most enjoyable for their slower pace. The writing may surely be too slow for some, but following Silk through the minute-by-minute play of his humble beginnings had a sort of meditative quality that I really enjoyed. However, Long Sun accelerates in speed and scope as the story goes on, and hits a few consistency speed bumps along the way. The third book was especially rough in this regard, as Wolfe started rapidly incorporating different threads and perspective switches into the plot, but it ultimately works as a symbolic representation of the ripple effect of Silk's enlightenment. One theme that does stay consistent throughout is one of delayering, where the stakes just keep getting bigger as the curtains are pulled back to reveal the puppet masters and their various strings. Some of the largest threats in the beginning of the story become absolutely miniscule, even disposed of in purposefully unfashionable manners just to drive home the point that the grand scheme of events is way larger than any one person could ever be.
Despite the books various flaws and pacing issues, Silk and his bird Oreb remain a consistent and reliable heartbeat at the center of the storm. I just love Silk as a character; his shrewdness, his empathy, his faith and blind sense of duty that puts him between a rock and a hard place more often than he would like to admit. Just as with Severian, it would not be wrong to interpret Silk as another "christike" figure—something that becomes even more apparent as we advance into the Short Sun trilogy. Silk walks hand-in-hand with society's pariahs, often placing his friendship and trust in the most unsavory of characters. It is just really inspiring the way he moves throughout the world and interacts with people, yet he is not without fault, and is prone to the temptations of lust, greed, and anger like any man. Oreb on the other hand is perfect, and provides a constant source of comedic relief and joy. Who would ever think that a bird who can only speak in a small amount of two or three word phrases could be one of the most beloved characters in a book, but damn, I always felt such a deep sense of relief any time Oreb would return to pull at Silk's hair and demand fish heads.
The ending left me a little dumbstruck and conflicted, not because it was written poorly, but because it was ambiguous, sudden, and not exactly happy either. Some of the reveals near the end were earth-shattering, but I couldn't help but feel a little upset at the way things ended up, especially after 1,200 pages, but hey, The Book of the Long Sun isn't here to give you warm fuzzy feelings. No, Gene Wolfe is too realistic for that, and is sure to remind you as often as possible that sometimes people—even the Gods—are actually just horrible, and things don't always turn out the way you want them to. C'est la vie. Long Sun was still an incredible experience that I'll never forget, and one that has become even more elevated in my mind after reading through the Short Sun trilogy and some of the resolutions it provides. If you've made it this far, don't stop now.

toy story 2 and monster's inc.
I swear I don't mean to do 2 at once, I'm watching these semi-daily but I can only review when I have energy, okay break and go
Toy Story 2
Do you ever watch a movie, and find that secretly, scenes from the whole movie are burned into your retinas and are drawn on your eyelids, this was my latest experience watching toy story 2. Toy story 2 is about an inversion on the original, woody is in a secondary location and it's up to the boys to bring him home while he has cowboy doll adventures with jesse and the horse and that other guy. Definitely a more novel setup than "what if a kid was evil" but it leaves a lot of the movie on the shoulders of the boys, who're fun but i would hesitate to say any of them "contribute", honestly mvp of the rescue mission might go to fake buzz, who gets the vent open *and* fights that weird zurg that shows up. I know all it sounds like i've done is complain, but that's mainly because i dont have much else to say otherwise. Toy Story 2 is a natural feeling expansion on the original, talking about one or two things the movie does well would just be repeating "well they did this better than the original, and technology improved over time"
toy story 2 gets a 9/10, and the original gets retroactively bumped to an 8/10
memorable bits: the video game bit, when woody finds all his cool shit, "when she loved me" (honestly the buzz half of this movie is less than the woody half that's why all these scenes are woody's), the invention of asmr cleaning videos, star wars references fuckin everywhere, the entire last 30 minutes being stuck in my brain since childhood with it's weird soft lighting and like fun gray stuff
monster's inc.
Now this is a movie I can analyze. Monster's inc. is about how we need green energy fucking now, naturally it was released in 2002. Sully and Mike are working class factory men in the scare factory, a power plant but instead of torturing rocks they torture children by going into their rooms at night and scaring them. They do this with minimal safety equipment and with an understanding that touching a human child is explicitly dangerous. This becomes clearly false as they meet our third lead, a human child they call boo, shenanigans and hijinks ensue, they get boo back to the human world, get their coworker randall and boss mr. waterknot put in prison for human trafficking and they switch to green energy laughter. i find this movie far more interesting as a metaphor than as a movie to be critical about (it's another 8/10 if you want a score, i really like the score and the world but find it drags in the middle until the climax). So, their boss was secretly funding a more efficient, but far more unethical way of getting oil scream, instead of going with the even more efficient and powerful and infinite laughter, but it doesn't really seem like mr. waterknot even really knows about the laughter. Actually now that i think of it nobody knew there was an alternative until the end, so ig the boss wasn't the worst fictional capitalist i've ever seen, because at least he wasn't also suppressing the cure, he was just stupid. but who cares about his plan his shit is incidental randall is a class traitor! like straight up actually doesn't care about selling out human kids, and doesn't give a fuck about mike and sully getting banished for like 5 minutes, just so long as he gets a promotion he'll kill his lil peanut guy to get his way. it's like a really messy metaphor but it works as a compelling case for "but why not solar power tho?" y'know? like that one comic that's like "but what if we cleaned up the world for future generations for nothing" but like as a movie, why shouldn't we use green energy? even if it's nothing but better for the kids
memorable bits: uhhh the fuckin doors, that scene with mike and randall with the clock, the scene where they shave that guy, the sushi place (which blew up in the pre-9/11 cut), the fuckin monster offices in the back (need that in kh), "welcome to the himalayas", nemo in boo's room at the end, "i'd kidnap a thousand children before i'd let this company die" for some reason playing continuously in my head whenever i think of this movie, rozz the slug lady, celia, the ending tease,

NJ Offshore Wind Energy
Renewable energy is a crucial step in our present and future. Non-renewable energy produces waste that worsens climate conditions and has long been recognized as unsustainable. Innumerable scientists and politicians have spoken about the need to switch to renewable energy.
Renewable energy does not solve every issue that exists with non-renewable energy. Methods like nuclear power, solar power, and hydroelectricity produce waste that we do not have every perfect solution for. However, the benefits of these sources of energy outweigh the disadvantages if our goal is to foster a healthy world and healthy communities.
With this article, I intend to review key aspects of one renewable energy source - offshore wind power - and how it applies to New Jersey’s sustainable energy.
In September 2020, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) approved the New Jersey Offshore Wind Strategic Plan.
The goal of this strategic plan is to produce 7,500 MW of energy by 2035, more than double the previously stated goal. The State of New Jersey Energy Data Center reports that, in 2020, New Jersey generated about 61 trillion MWh of electricity. If the strategic plan’s goals are achieved, offshore wind will account for about 1% of New Jersey’s energy production.
So why bother?
Firstly, wind is clean and renewable. Offshore winds are on average several meter-per-second faster than onshore winds, and they are not something that is depleting. Secondly, even though it’s starting small, decreasing the consumption of fossil fuels is vital to reach sustainability and decrease air pollution from carbon dioxide. Thirdly, wind farms are largely recyclable, with the building materials and occupied land able to be reused at the end of a turbine’s life. Even the blades, which have been piling up, now can be put to other uses like raw material for cement. Lastly, New Jersey governor Murphy claims these efforts will create thousands of jobs and bring millions of investment dollars to New Jersey. Supporting that statement is a report of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) that expects about 20,000 new jobs relating to offshore wind by 2030.
The creation of renewable energy jobs has repeatedly been a promise ultimately not upheld. The change in skill demands for a workforce does not suddenly create a proportionally skilled population. This is why it is positive news that the state has worked on reports and organizations specifically for the goal of developing a relevantly robust workforce. These include the Wind Institute for Innovation and Training, and the Offshore Wind Workforce Assessment Report.
This long list of organizations and titles means that the state has thoroughly assessed how to achieve a more clean energy output. As far as we can tell from the studies and efforts put into this strategic plan, there is earnest effort to make this happen, and to help New Jersey citizens obtain higher sustainability as well as to develop a workforce that can fill the jobs created by this plan.
The state is also not stopping at 7,500 MWh, but has a continued goal of 11 GW of electricity by 2040. This means more jobs in this sector and more sustainable energy.
Furthermore, by making New Jersey serviceable to offshore wind in general for the country, the upfront investment will have long-term benefits.
The impracticality of transporting turbine materials over land necessitates the presence of ports and harbors along New Jersey’s coast. The development of these ports is expected to support both New Jersey offshore wind facilities as well as wind farms in the mid-Atlantic region. Collectively, policies across thirteen states aim to have 112,286 MW of offshore wind power by 2050. Investing in this market at this time places New Jersey as a central hub in the offshore wind energy economy.
Unfortunately, this strategic plan has run into a delay recently. In late October, plans to build two major wind farms off the New Jersey shore were canceled. Inflation has caused financing costs for wind power projects to soar. The aforementioned projects became too expensive because of rising interest rates. Many U.S. contracts for these projects did not include protections for inflation, and what many governments sought as cheap electricity might end up being more expensive for consumers than hoped for. The competition for wind farm supplies and equipment also drove up costs.
Governor Murphy affirmed that efforts towards offshore wind power are still being made. He stated that the government will hold Ørsted, the company that backed out of the recently canceled projects, to its promise of paying 300 million dollars in the case that they backes out of the projects. The other projects in progress that the state intends to continue are expected to be complete in 2028. The cancellations have caused a delay, but offshore wind power is still strongly pursued by the New Jersey government. Regarding costs, introducing wind power is ultimately still projected to make costs cheaper than their current rates. Regarding supply chain issues, little has been said, but hopefully these drawbacks emphasize the need to balance policies and goals at every step of the process.
Some New Jersey citizens have also been concerned about how these projects will affect fishing and tourism. In 2022, an estimated 100 million tourists visited New Jersey’s shore, and fishing is a popular pastime for more than 1 million people in the state.
Based on research after the creation of the Block Island Wind Farm off of Rhode Island, wind farms are not likely to cause a decrease in tourism or marginally impact the view from the shore. In fact, they are more likely to increase tourism through public interest in touring the wind farms. While research in this subject is new, wind farms are also not found to severely impact fishing. Experiences are varied and concerns still exist, but so far anglers don’t find themselves largely impeded. Similarly, another article explains how wind farms are observed to become artificial reefs, which has both positive and negative results.
Offshore wind power is complex and complicated by many factors such as scale, economics, public receptions, and workforce requirements. This list and this article are not nearly exhaustive of everything important to consider about wind power, but it is a solid start. Though it’s faced setbacks, wind power is progressing, and will eventually result in cleaner energy and bring the U.S. closer to its goal of 100% clean electricity. The drawbacks discussed here include those that have also been resolved, such as recycling turbine blades. Likewise, solutions for the other concerns examined are expected to arise. In an extremely difficult time, with obstacles in every direction, humans are still taking steps to create a better future.
