Watched this beautiful 🐘family drinking from the watering hole right outside our lodge. What an amazing spectacle! Here's something you may not know about African elephants: 1) They have a life span of about 65 years. 2) They have no control of their proboscis (trunk) until they're 3 years old. 3) The tips of the proboscis are like a thumb and finger and can grip the smallest thing extremely gently. 4) They are the loudest mammals when vocalising, but they are also the quietest, as the sensors in their pads pick up ground vibrations from other elephants, so they don't need to call. 5) An elephant's pregnancy lasts 22 months. Most of it is to allow the proboscis to develop. 6) Adult females weigh 2-3 tonnes, but males tend to be double that weight. 7) African elephants are endangered in Central and North Africa, but not in South Africa, where there are 25,000-30,000 in Kruger Park alone. 8) Since measures were introduced to stop poaching, elephants in South Africa have been devastating the environment by depleting it of trees. They seek out the nutrients in the cambium layer of trees either by peeling off the outer bark, by crashing them or by uprooting them. The trees inevitably die [swipe left for photos].
