Man sexually assaults woman after saving her from another sexual assault, police say
A man allegedly sexually assaulted a woman he had just saved from a sexual assault attack in a popular Florida tourist town.
The woman was rescued by the man from the first attack on a street in Key West but then took her to a city landmark where he attacked her himself, police say.

Can you do Key West? (Island in Florida USA, had a short-lived independence movement which culminated in the mayor (iirc) whacking a Naval customs guy on the head with a loaf of stale bread). You may still see “Conch Republic” on some of the buildings in town/on the buoys, in the names of some businesses, or at the end of the boardwalk on the little tower marking the southernmost point in the US, and iirc they still print passports for the Conch Republic (which are not valid), but nobody takes it seriously and it’s main purpose now is to be a tourist thing.
While we’re at it, another poll about New York City/maybe some polls about specific cities in the US that have their own unique regional cultures?
I can add Key West and New York to the list! But if you want other places, please use the form to suggest it I also don't really want to turn it into a US centric blog because I'm not even usamerican, and I have no idea which cities or regions have their own thing. But USamericans are free to send their suggestions, of course, just as anyone else!

Key West's Top 4 Attractions
Tumblr media
Whether you're visiting Key West for the first time or a seasoned visitor who hasn't been since you were a child, you'll find enough to see and do. Here are some top sites to visit in Florida's oldest city, from the iconic Southernmost Point to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory.
The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center, located on the historic Truman Waterfront in Key West, provides a variety of educational displays. The center focuses on the Florida Keys's marine environment and educates youngsters about conservation, biodiversity, and the advantages of reefs. The center has a 2,500-gallon coral reef tank and instructional materials about reefs, mangroves, and ocean life.
The Florida Keys have a diverse ecology with several fauna and bird species. In addition to aquatic life, the islands provide a winter haven for snowbirds. The Eastern National Wildlife Refuge is also located in the Florida Keys.
Several endangered animals call the Florida Keys home. The Key Deer is one of the most endangered species. It is North America's smallest deer and is classified as a subspecies of white-tailed deer.
The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, located on Duval Street, is a peaceful haven. Hundreds of butterflies may be seen in their natural environment here. This lovely hideaway was named one of the top four things to do in Key West.
You may get a close look at exotic tropical butterflies at the Conservatory. These lovely species are brought in from Africa, Asia, and Australia. They have relatively brief lifespans, with many dying within two weeks.
The Eco-Discovery Center has an interactive exhibit on the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The interactive displays at the center illustrate how the Sanctuary strives to safeguard the Florida Keys' natural resources. It is entirely free to visit. The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Conservatory is also home to a variety of birds and fauna. This makes it an ideal location for a picture stop. The Conservatory is situated on Duval Street's southern terminus. From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., the Conservatory is open. It is handicapped-accessible.
The Conservatory is worth a visit, particularly for children. The butterflies and birds will captivate them. They will also value the learning center. The center features displays and a movie about the life cycle of butterflies.
The Oldest House in South Florida, located at 322 Duval Street in Old Key West, is the state's oldest surviving residence. This mansion, erected in 1829, has weathered storms, fires, and other natural calamities. Richard Cussans, a ship's carpenter, constructed the home.
The home was built in the Classic Revival style at the time. It draws inspiration from colonial architecture. A spacious garden with lush tropical flora and a gazebo surrounds the home. It also has several endemic florae.
The residence is free and accessible to the public. Relics and papers on exhibit give a historical peek into the island's history. Visitors may also tour the home. A member of staff is available to answer queries.
Captain Francis Watlington and his wife, Emeline, lived at this residence. They had seven kids. The family occupied the place until 1972. The deed to the house was handed to the Historic Florida Keys Foundation when they sold it. The Old Island Restoration Foundation was appointed by the foundation to undertake the restoration project in 1975.
Whether you're visiting Key West, Florida, or simply passing through, the Southernmost Point monument is a must-see. It's a fantastic picture opportunity and a historical monument for the city. There are also several restaurants and stores with the word "southernmost" in their name. Snorkeling and diving are also available at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park.
It's a popular tourist destination for both residents and tourists. The concrete buoy may be seen near Whitehead and South streets. It is about 12 feet tall and seven feet broad. It is colored red, black, and yellow. It also has a plaque adjacent to it that explains the history of the island's black people.
The buoy is open to the public at all times. People from all over the globe come here to shoot photographs. You may also see it with a webcam. You can observe the traffic in real time this way. There is also a view of the Atlantic Ocean.

How feral chickens rule the roost in Key West
Key West, Florida — In quirky Key West, Florida, it’s not just tourists flocking to town, feral chickens have found their tropical paradise. And Key West City Commissioner Clayton Lopez has got a beef. They’re “everywhere,” he says, with entire chicken families often seen crossing roads. A resolution introduced by Lopez, which is now law, bans feeding chickens on public property. “What I am looking to do is to try and address the health issues of humans, as well as the chickens,” Lopez said. The chickens can cause property damage and their droppings can spread disease. The chickens are sometimes run over by cars, and chicks can fall into storm drains. Then there are the roosters, which crow at all hours. While rescued chickens are sent to farms in mainland Florida, it’s impossible to catch them all. But how did it get like this? ‘It’s the oldest image we have of chickens in Key West,” said Corey Malcolm, lead historian for the Florida Keys History Center, explaining that it’s a tale of tail feathers. “Chickens were very much a part of early Key West,” Malcolm said. They were brought in the 1820s by the first settlers, who according to Malcom “would sell them by the dozen to the residents here.” Then in the 1860s came a Cuban migration. “One of the traditions that came from Cuba was cockfighting,” Malcolm said. “…The tradition of raising chickens carries on from the early 1900s into around World War II.” By then, the ease of getting eggs and meat from supermarkets meant homeowners let their chickens loose in a two-by-four mile island with no natural predators. In 1986, Florida banned cockfighting and roosters were set free. Then in 1998, Hurricane George spread them all throughout the island, and they have been multiplying ever since. Mitigation has failed, and a city-employed chicken catcher in the 2000s quit after swift backlash from chicken enthusiasts. Now, the chickens are as much a tourist attraction as the Southernmost Point Buoy. They’re also a popular sight in souvenir shops. “They’re everywhere, yes, that’s good for me,” said Arthur Bakala, who owns three chicken-themed shops in Key West. At his chicken-themed wine and coffee bar, there are statues, paintings, t-shirts, mugs and everything in between, all part of the island’s chicken culture.   In Key West, it’s the chickens’ world, and we’re just living in it.   Source link via The Novum Times

I'm trying to upload a video for you but the internet connection is bad. I'm in Key West though. at the El Patio Motel. I've stayed here before and had this same trouble of trying to send you a video. I'll show you some photos instead. I was trying to tell you how hot it was today. We rode from a place called the Looe Key Reef Resort which was a fun beat-up motel with a tiki bar. It was 30 miles in the hottest glaring sun without any shade. The heat index was 110 at some point. I had to stop a lot and sit in slivers of shade. Yesterday was when we rode over the 7 mile bridge that was like flying. Today was like slithering with my tires seeming to stick to the pavement. My bike is strong, though. like a tank. And now we're here. I love it here.
Thank you for being close to me. I saw the cat named Fergie. I feel more alive when you're close. I feel whole and ready. I saw your posts about the crazy world. The media! I think they're just making up headlines now. I don't know if the campaign to oust Biden is bothering you as much as it does me but I am deeply angered by it. I've become a Biden fan because of it. Because of how cruel and disrespectful and disloyal it feels. And divisive and counter-productive and dismissive of everyone except wealthy asshole people who think they control the world. I hate all of it. I like the Biden supporters and will stand with them.
I went to the Southernmost point tonight and meant to show you a photo of me by the buoy but it was roped off and a man was there repainting it. So I took a photo of him.
I love you and want to kiss you.

In September 2021, a tourist was sexually assaulted twice in one day in Key West — and the second attack was caught on the live webcam that live streams the famous Southernmost Point buoy.On Thursday, a Monroe County judge sentenced one of the defendants, the man who raped the 34-year-old woman at the landmark, to 10 years in state prison, followed by five years of probation.Kerry Calvin Gasag, 39, pleaded guilty to sexual battery, false imprisonment and evidence tampering. Had he gone to trial and a jury found him guilty, he faced up to 25 years in prison, said Assistant Monroe County State Attorney Joseph Mansfield. The crime was amplified by Gasag initially being perceived as the woman’s protector, interrupting her being raped by someone else on Fleming Street just moments earlier, only to make her into his own victim when they arrived at the Southernmost Point, according to police.A man in Boston watching the webcam saw the attack unfold and called Key West police to report it.But police didn’t find her until after the attack, when she ran down the street wearing only a top, according to the arrest report.Officers took her to Lower Keys Medical Center and later interviewed her in her hotel Casa Marina hotel room, about a half a mile down South Street from the Southernmost Point. The Miami Herald is not naming the woman. She told police her evening started with dinner on Duval Street, where she drank several glasses of wine. She told police that after dinner, she walked a few blocks to a bar, adding “a large portion” of her memory is missing after she arrived at the bar.She did remember meeting a man at the bar and getting into his car, but got out after feeling unsafe, she told police.Shortly after getting out of the car, however, a man grabbed her and forced her to the ground in a wooded area on Fleming Street and sexually assaulted her. The woman told police the man raped her for several minutes but she ran away when “for an unknown reason” he turned away from her.Police said the man who raped her on Fleming Street is Jorge Calderon Nunez, 32. His case in the attack is pending, said Mansfield, the prosecutor. He’s being held in county jail on a bond of $225,000.Detectives say a video found on the woman’s iPhone filled in the blanks in the victim’s memory and detailed the horror that took place as she was discovered by Gasag and afterward. In the video, a woman is heard crying and a man, Gasag, is heard telling her to “stop,” officers said in their report. Gasag then says, “stop means stop,” and tells the woman to get up off the ground. The woman told police that she initially thought that Gasag, who told her his name was Calvin, rescued her from her attacker. But she was being led further into harm’s way.Her cellphone video continued to record, picking up Gasag telling the woman he’d take her back to Casa Marina. On the way, he asked her if she wanted to have sex, according to police. Officers said in their report the woman “adamantly” told him no, and she wanted out of the car immediately.Gasag responded that he could have already had sex with her in the bushes and wanted to know why she didn’t want to be with him. According to police, the woman got out of the car in a panic, and that’s when her phone stopped recording. The webcam, however, pieced together the rest of the story, according to police. It showed Gasag putting his hand over the woman’s mouth and dragging her behind the Southernmost Point buoy. After a few minutes, police say the video shows the woman emerge partially clothed from behind the buoy, fall to the ground and then sprint east on South Street. The webcam also filmed Gasag pick up a pair of jean shorts, get into his car and drive away, police say.Police said in their report that Gasag was “clearly identifiable” in the video and they arrested him at his Northside Drive apartment.

STONE CRAB SEASON UPON US
STONE CRAB SEASON UPON US - https://keywestlou.com/stone-crab-season-upon-us/Stone crab season upon us! Begins next saturday, October 15. Whoopie! I consider stone crabs the finest of foods. Always have. From the first time I enjoyed them in 1962. At Joe's Stone Crabs in Miami. Stone crabs, hash browns and cream spinach! Only fished in one place. The Florida Keys. Our specialty. The season runs through May 1, 2023. Enjoy them! Expensive, but worth it! The older I get, the more I realize there is so much I do not know. Today, I learned that George Custer is buried at West Point. Custer was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn in Montana. I always assumed he was buried there. Not so. One year after his death, his body was returned to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Many great historical figures were never at the top of their class while in school. Custer one. He graduated from West Point in 1861 at the bottom of his class. On this day in 2004, actor Cristopher Reeve died at the age of 52. Best known for his starring role in four Superman films. I considered his performance in the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time one of his best also. Reeve was an avid horseman. On May 27, 1995 he was thrown from a horse. The accident resulted in his being paralyzed from the neck down. I met Reeve at a charity fundraiser in Utica several years later. Spent a short bit of time with him. All I could think and feel as I walked away from him was how sad. Romani people are not to be confused with Romanians or Romans. They are Gypsies. Hitler was anti-Gypsy as he was anti-Jew. He did not kill as many Gypsies only because there were significantly fewer in number than Jews. However kill them he did. A large number of Gypsies were confined to Auschwitz. On October 10, 1944, 800 gypsy children were gassed to death at Auschwitz. No particular reason. Just lets get rid of 800 today. It bothers me that there are those today who have become fascists in thought, some in action. Hitler lovers. How can they so be when Hitler and his followers killed so many innocents. Difficult for me to understand. I worry about the rise of anti-Semitism in the U.S. Steve Thomson wrote of the Southernmost Point. The Southernmost Point statue is not actually the furthest south in Key West. The City decided for logistical reasons that spot would be the best.  There used to be a metal sign with all the information here. During Spring Break it began started disappearing every year. So the City put in a giant sewer fixture and filled it with cement. I think the thieves understood the message sent. They painted it bright red with all the info. Now they line up for a block to get their photo. It looks like a buoy and everyone loves it. You have to take pictures, everyone does it. Every time you see Key West on TV, they show the Southernmost Point and that beautiful sea. Enjoy your day!

"Oh, yeah im like, ageless. Im gonna keep getting bigger until i cant walk anymore"
Alligators are so cool, and my favourite thing about these living dinosaurs is that they dont really age biologically. This guy? Hes probably ancient!
And the finale
Tumblr media
Dan: whats this?
"This..."
Tumblr media
"Is where we part was my friend"
Tumblr media
"That way is south, it'll be a long trip so i wish you luck. But...if what you told me is true, you've already swam a good few thousand miles just to get here. This'll probably be a cake walk for you"
The alligator, who dan has dubbed "spikey" takes him as far south as he possibly can, and thats the southernmost point buoy of the continental USA. Needless to say, spikey likes this kid, he's a little trooper for making it this far.
