So everyone is freaking out about the Splatoon 3 teaser that was in the Nintendo Direct yesterday, and while we don’t know much, I’d like to throw something out there.

So back in November 2020, I was watching Chuggaaconroy’s Phantom Hourglass let’s play, and in the final episode (as spoiler-free as I’ll say) he talks about two characters themed around squids and sperm whales and how in nature, squids and sperm whales are natural enemies. So this got me thinking of Splatoon, obviously.

Since we haven’t seen any other aquatic creatures (physically in-game) besides inklings, octolings, and salmonids, I started thinking, what if in Splatoon 3 there’s a new (eventually playable) species of whale humanoids (maybe called Finlings/Echolings/Podlings?) who, like the octolings, have a villainous leader?

I started to imagine some sort of whale mob boss and how he could be a different sort of evil from Octavio. While Octavio mostly focuses on music and mind control, this new villain could be a threat with connections to different influential individuals (maybe even one of the new idols? Though I’m still sure one of them will be a squid still).

Then I realized there’s already a character we don’t know much about who at the very least has business connections in Splatoon 2: Mr. Grizz. If he was this secret villain for Splatoon 3, it would give him a much bigger role than he already had in Splatoon 2. I was also thinking that since there’s evidence of the Octarians and Grizzco working together (power eggs present in both modes, the Scrapper’s tech playing the Octarian theme when broken) maybe they have an “enemy of my enemy is my friend” deal with each other that could be explored in Splatoon 3.

Like everyone else, I don’t entirely know what Splatoon 3 will have to offer yet, and we likely won’t know for at least a few months. I just wanted to throw some ideas I had for what the game could offer in case I predict something. Obviously I’ll be cool with whatever the game does, but if something happens in story mode with Mr. Grizz or with a new playable species (that isn’t Salmonids I guess) I’ll consider it a win. I’m still super excited and surprised we got anything at all.
