This series incorporates my research on ancestral art techniques and textiles acknowledging the contributions of those who against all odds gifted us with our carnival culture.

Earl Brooks performed pan instrumentals at The Barrack Yard in 2023. He  has been performing as a pannist for more than 40 years and is 70-years-old. He composed songs for Kurt Allen more than ten years ago, including Doh Meddle with Me, and has remained friends with the calypsonian ever since. In addition to his career as a performer he has arranged for Hatters and the London based steelband Ebony. The Italian Air Force official steelband try to coax the BR.20 into life.

Nobody pictures Fiat’s boxy BR.20 when they think of the Battle of Britain, despite it destroying a canning factory in Lowestoft (or maybe because its sole achievement was destroying a canning factory in Lowestoft). That it managed to remain relatively unknown through a wild and exciting career around the world is a remarkable achievement. Even a spell in the Japanese army air force didn’t make this boxy Italian bore memorable.

Trinidad and Tobago Artist Jackie Hinkson has had a stellar career as a Painter of scenes of life in the Caribbean. He is arguably the only person whose work can map the ever changing geographies of the islands. Here he is sketching his observations of players enjoying the national instrument on the roadways in August 2023, the year that PAN DAY became internationally official.
