Today I learned that the word "thatch" as in thatched roof shares its etymology with the dinosaur "stegosaurus." They both derive from the Proto-Indo-European word *(s)teg, meaning "to cover." In Greek, *(s)teg became stego meaning "roof," while in Old English it became þeccan (theccan).
Also, the English words sprinkle and freckle are cognates, both derived from the PIE root *(s)prek meaning "to scatter."
Etymology is amazing

I noticed the old/original version of this piece got some retweets recently and I haven’t posted to Tumblr in awhile, and it’s a pretty good time to dust off my account.
I call this piece “Butterfly Effect” because I just couldn’t resist that title no matter how hard I tried.
5x7″ and 11x17″ prints are available on my website.

I had to tell my niece that they changed the classifications of kids and she now qualifies as a stegosaurus. She was displeased.
