Everyone please look at Defiant and Steiner and understand, ok? Understand how a war machine and a paladin fell in love, and how someone who needed to be loved and someone who needed to love could become so precious to each other.
Also understand that masked robot man hot.

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1993
We’re rumbling into 1993.
Spoilers for past Rumbles.
The undercard:
The Beverly Brothers vs the Steiner Brothers. WCW lost some big names to the WWF during this time period: Ric Flair, the Steiner Brothers, Lex Luger. None would have long runs with the WWF. (Flair would a decade later for a longer run, Scott Steiner’s return would be as brief as his first run). Scott’s promos may have been more boring but in-ring he was much more enjoyable to watch in his pre “Papa Pump” era.
Rockers team and breakup/Marty’s return hype video. Sherri Martel, now managing Shawn Michaels, has mirror smashed over her head when Shawn throws her into the path of Marty. Sherri was such a beast in everything she did. There was no other woman like her during this era. (Luna Vachon come close).
Shawn Michaels vs Marty Janetty. Sherri is at ringside with no proclaimed loyalty to either man.  The Rockers broke up over a year ago but the feud was backburnered when Marty left the WWF due to addictions/personal issues. A year later and we’re finally getting the long-awaited match. Sherri’s interference costs Marty the match. Sherri’s loyalty remains unknown after the match. Mean Gene attempts to interview Sherri after the match but is interrupted by the brawling Shawn and Marty.
Bam Bam Bigelow vs Big Boss Man. Match was okay but would have been the “bathroom/merch break” match for me if I was at the arena.
Bret Hart vs Razor Ramon. Bret is the World Heavyweight champion. Stu and Helen Hart are at ringside. It’s noted (for the first time) that the winner of the Royal Rumble will be given a shot at the World championship. Great match (not surprising considering its Bret and Scott).
Bobby Heenan unveils “the Narcissist” Lex Luger, which is Luger posing before mirrors and monologuing over his perfection. Moving on…
“Ceasar and Cleopatra” issue a proclamation on Wrestlemania (it takes place in Vegas in ’93). The duo proclaim the winner of the Rumble will battle the world champion at Wrestlemania. Let the games begin.
The entrants, in order of appearance:
Ric Flair
Bob Backlund (before he shaved his head and “snapped”)
Papa Shango (aka Kama aka the Godfather)
Ted DiBase (accompanied by Jimmy Hart)
Nast Boy Knobbs
Virgil
Jerry “the King” Lawler
Max Moon (Konan)
Genichiro Tenryu (This is pre-internet so I wonder how many fans in the arena knew who Tenyru was. Tape trading was a thing but access wasn’t easy compared to getting on youtube and searching for videos of a wrestler).
Mister Perfect (Curt Hennig)
Skinner (Steve Keirn)
Koko B Ware (at the time ½ of High Energy with Owen Hart)
Samu (accompanied by Afa, ½ of the Headshrinkers)
Berzerker (John Nord)
Undertaker (accompanied by Paul Bearer)
Terry Taylor (non-Rooster)
El Gigante (accompanied by Harvey Wippleman, making his WWF debut, El Gigante eliminates himself)
Damien Demento
IRS (accompanied by Jimmy Hart
Tatanka
Nast Boy Sags
Typhoon (aka Tugboat aka Shockmaster)
Fatu (accompanied by Afa, ½  of the Headshrinkers, better known as Rikishi)
Earthquake
Carlos Colon (Monsoon refers to Colon as a “youngster”, umm, not so much. As with Tenyru, how many of the fans knew who he was?)
“El Matador” Tito Santana
“The Model” Rick Martel
Yokozuna (accompanied by Mr Fuji, my youngest sister was very young when we watched this Rumble for the first time, I will never forget her response to Yokozuna’s appearance: Why is he wearing a diaper?”)
Owen Hart (1/2 of High Energy)
Repo Man
Randy Savage (Savage continues to be confused as to the rules of a Rumble as he eliminated himself in a previous year and attempted to pin Yokozuna in this Rumble).
Yokozuna wins the Rumble. The ending credits show Yokozuna having a confrontation with Bret backstage.
I spotted Bill Alphonso as one of the outside referees. I’m so used to him as “Fonzie” in ECW that seeing him as a referee is weird.
There were 31 participants in this year’s Rumble. 30 if you don’t count El Gigante who was a “surprise” appearance. First time Rumblers: Bob Backlund, Papa Shango, Jerry Lawler, Max Moon, Samu, El Gigante, Damien Demento, Tatanka, Fatu, Carlos Colon, Yokozuna, Owen Hart
Tenyru and Colon would be the first surprise/random entrants in the Rumble.
Undertaker has the first “big man goes on a rampage and eliminates everybody” spot.
We also had the first “unite to throw the big man out” spot when the entrants attempted to eliminate Yokozuna.
Backlund had the longest performance.
Quick Eliminations: Papa Shango, Terry Taylor
Feuds in the Rumble: Flair/Perfect, Taker/Gigante, Santana/Martel
Road to Wrestlemania: Bret/Yokozuna and Gigante/Taker set up.
The Taker-Gigante face-off was ridiculous. Gigante was supposed come off as menacing but how can I take seriously a man in a poor Bigfoot cosplay. Taker’s gimmick is equally cartoony but he can bring the menacing aura. Gigante can’t.
Loved the face-off between Yokozuna and Earthquake: the pretend sumo wrester vs the wrestler with an actual sumo wrestler.
Rating: 8 out of 10.  The undercard was strong (minus the Bigelow-Boss Man match). The Rumble itself finally had “victory = title shot at Wrestlemania) established along with several key spots: surprise entrants, big man on a rampage, unite to throw the heavyweight out.
Wrestlers and others who have passed on: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, Howard Finkel, Joey Marella, Sherri Martel, Mean Gene Okerlund, Bam Bam Bigelow, Big Boss Man, Razor Ramon (Scott Hall), Stu Hart, Helen Hart, Virgil, Paul Bearer, Mr Fuji, Yokozuna, Owen Hart, Randy Savage.
Total deceased individuals: 17 (down 9 from the previous Rumble).

Most Beloved WWE Wrestler Tournament: Round 2 Statistics Dump
Followers: 251
Total Votes: 22,087 + 13,398 = 35,485
Times I realized I was not in-depth enough with my checking of wrestlers and forgot at least one which I only found out because I heard an old wrestler was being accused of murder and the name didn't sound familiar so I checked and it turns out he isn't included but have to remind myself that if no one mentioned him being missing from round 1, he probably isn't the most beloved anyway: once, thank god
Beloved By Gender:
We started with a split of 81.7% men to 18.3% women, which moved to 75% men to 25% women after the first round. After the second round of voting, our percentages are:
Tumblr media
Voting Trends:
During round 2, the voting totals ranged from a low of 360 votes per day to 554, with the average rising from 387 votes per day to 462 votes per day (Also I figured out how to add a date marking line how cool is that??)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

While all the 100%ers from Round 1 have since gotten a vote against them, there were a couple of wrestlers in Round 2 who got through unscathed

I've been thinking about this a whole lot but with wrestlers who do think is kinkier in bed?
I think we've had a similar question before, but I think the ones that were more likely to go the extra distance for a gimmick would be more experimental in other parts of their lives as well.
I know at a time Shawn Michaels really pushed the envelope with kink (mid to late 90s), Raven was likely into some darker kinky stuff, Kid/Sean Waltman, but...we have evidence for that.
I think some of them would have been cool with bringing their gimmick into the bedroom a time or two. Undertaker (omg please), Kane (bring the mask), Daddy ass/Billy Gunn, Mick Foley (all three), Al Snow, Goldust, Both Hardy Boys, The Brood, Jimmy Hart, Scott Steiner, Razor Ramon (god I hope so).

I drew the Bret Hart "you're dereferencing a null pointer" thing with Sol a while ago and it makes me laugh and I want to draw this now too but I'm not going to have time until like June so consider this an IOU because I'm already laughing about it

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1994
We’re rumbling into 1994.
Spoilers for past Rumbles.
The undercard:
Tatanka vs Bam Bam Bigelow (accompanied by Luna Vachon). Another okay Rumble match for Bam Bam. I like Bigelow but his Rumble matches are rather uninspiring. Let’s talk about Luna – an underappreciated and underrated woman of wrestling, From 1990 to 1993, it was slim pickings for women in North American wrestling (Japan is a different story – the joshis were on fire in this era). The 1990 to 1994 era had three of the all-time greats (Sherri, Luna, and Woman) dominating the scene. Madusa, Missy Hyatt, and Elizabeth made sporadic appearances, but it was the trio I mentioned above that dominated the WWF/WCW/ECW scene.  Luna’s first run in the WWF had a great if short-lived feud with Sherri but she was never used to her full potential. Luna could have had a fantastic feud with Madusa but it didn’t happen. Luna’s second run with the WWE was a complete waste of her potential. Jobbing to Sable? Seriously? The fact that Luna was never a WWF women’s champion is a crime against wrestling. Her WWF career can be summed up as “wasted potential”. At least she’s in the Hall of Fame. Still waiting for Nancy to be recognized for her contributions.
Recap video of the worsening relations between Bret and Owen Hart. One of my all-time favorite feuds in wrestling.
Bret and Owen Hart vs the Quebecers (accompanied by Johnny Polo aka Raven). Fun match – let’s be honest, Bret and Owen don’t have bad matches.  The match continues the road to Wrestlemania and the classic Bret vs Owen match. Bonus feature of a non-grunge/alternative/goth/etc Raven.
Referees and other officials attend to Bret as Owen rants into the camera.
To quote Owen: “And that’s why I kicked your leg out of your leg!”
I.R.S. (Mike Rotunda) vs Razor Ramon (Scott Hall). Another win for the Bad Guy.
A way too long Undertaker/Yokozuna recap video
Undertaker (accompanied by Paul Bearer) vs Yokozuna (accompanied by Mr Fuji and Jim Cornette) in a casket match that sees everyone and their grandmother interfere, specifically: Crush, the Great Kabuki, Genichiro Tenyru, Bam Bam Bigelow, Adam Bomb, Jeff Jarrett, the Headshrinkers, and Diesel (Kevin Nash). Taker loses due to the interference of eleven men. Taker doesn’t sell the defeat long as he disappears from the casket in a mist, reappears on the screen, mumbles nonsense that would make the Ultimate Warrior proud, and ascends in a cloud of smoke. Both meh and stupid at the same time. So many people were involved in this match that they might as well have started the Rumble early. I think the recap video and the aftermath lasted longer than the match itself. Remember when Yokozuna was booked as a monster heel? Yeah, me neither.
Comments from various participants in the Rumble: Savage, Jarrett, Tatanka, Diesel, Doink and Dink, Shawn, Luger.
The Taker-Yoko match must have run too long because Vince announces that due to time constraints there will be 90 seconds between entrants as opposed to the traditional two minutes. I’m telling you; they should have started the Rumble during the Yoko-Taker match.
The entrants, in order of appearance:
Scott Steiner
Headshrinker Samu (accompanied by Afa)
Rick Steiner
Kwang (aka Savio Vega, accompanied by Harvey Wippleman)
Owen Hart
Bart Gunn
Diesel (Kevin Nash)
Bob Backlund (Backlund was considered “old” during this era but he was the same age as the current generation’s main eventers)
Billy Gunn (Tenyru and Kabuki are attacking Luger backstage. Why? I don’t know, I guess all foreign wrestlers must attack men in patriotic tights).
Virgil (per the commentators, he’s the alternate for Kamala)
Randy Savage (Time to see if Randy has finally grasped the rules of the Rumble)
Jeff Jarrett
Crush (Brian Adams)
Doink (accompanied by Dink)
Bam Bam Bigelow (making his 3rd appearance of the night, accompanied by Luna)
Mable (aka Visera, accompanied by Oscar)
Sparky Plug (aka Bob Holly, the alternate for the 1-2-3 Kid who is out with a knee injury)
Shawn Michaels
 Mo (Men On A Mission)
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
Tatanka
The Great Kabuki
Lex Luger
Genichiro Tenyru
Bastien Booger (aka Norman from WCW, apparently, he was “sick” and never came out
Rick “the Model” Martel
Bret Hart
Samu of the Headshrinkers (accompanied by Afa)
Marty Janetty
Adam Bomb (accompanied by Harvey Wippleman)
Bret and Lex eliminate each other to end the Rumble. The refs argue over whether Bret orLex won the Rumble. Jack Tunney enters the ring and declares the event a tie. But who’s going to Wrestlemania? To be decided.
The camerawork had a big “miss” when Diesel was eliminated. The commentators hyped up that Shawn helped the group eliminate Diesel from the Rumble. All the viewers saw was Michaels standing back and hesitating to join the group. At no point did we Shawn assist in eliminating Diesel.
First-time Rumblers: Scott Steiner, Rick Steiner, Kwang, Bart Gunn, Diesel, Billy Gunn, Jarrett, Crush, Doink, Bam Bam Bigelow, Mabel, Sparky Plug, Mo, Great Kabuki, Lex Luger, Adam Bomb
No one received entrance music, not even the first two entrants.
Random/Surprise Entrants: Great Kabuki, Genichiro Tenyru
Big Man Goes On A Rampage Spot: Diesel
Unite To Throw Out The Heavyweight Spot: Diesel, Mabel
Feuds in the Rumble: Shawn-Marty, Lex – Tenyru/Kabuki
Rating: 4 out of 10 (and the four goes to Bret and Owen, without those two this event is entirely skippable). The Taker-Yoko shenanigans went entirely two long, Kabuki and Tenyru are reduced to generic foreign heels allied with Fuji (or so were told by the commentators, we never see the pair interact with Fuji onscreen but all three are Japanese so they must be connected, right?), average at best undercard matches, even the Rumble itself is boring. My recommendation: watch Bret and Owen’s bits, skip the rest.
Wrestlers and others who have passed away: Howard Finkel, Bam Bam Bigelow, Luna Vachon, Owen Hart, Pat Patterson, Joey Marella, Gorilla Monsoon, Scott Hall, Paul Bearer, Yokozuna, Mr Fuji, Crush, Virgil, Randy Savage, Crush, Mabel, Jack Tunney
Total number of deceased individuals: 17 (tied with the previous year)

I know this is niche one so here is the reasons why for each Bruin being what wrestler. This doesn’t have to do with appearances more character, entrance music and overall performance.
Charlie Coyle: John Cena is a classic good guy and also is from Mass
Jake DeBrusk: Scott Steiner, I know what your thinking who? Scott Steiner is famous for his math speech where he takes his 75% chance of winning and then adds his 66 2/3 per cents to get to him having a 141 2/3 chance of winning at sacrifice. All I know is that if I had to watch Jake do math it would go along the lines of this speech.
Nick Foligno: Stone Cold Steve Austin=bald and a badass, Nick Foligno= bald and a badass sometimes
Derek Forbort: Goldberg, Goldberg never loses he also makes dumb decisions. I’m now respect the epic highs of Forbort Hockey he never has lows now.
Trent Frederic: Mankind, most famous for doing crazy stunts like getting thrown off the top of the steel cage multiple times. This guy just keeps making bad decisions so he can fight which suits Trent
Brandon Carlo: Kevin Nash otherwise known as big daddy cool diesel, honestly I gave him this guy solely because his nickname.
Matt Grzelcyk: Rob Van Dam, small and agile guys. Also out of all the bruins the one I would pick to randomly appear in a syfy shark film like Van Dam has done would be Matt.
David Krejci: The Undertaker, a person that’s just been around a long time that is consistently good. Also I feel like Krejci would have a random motorbike phase like the undertaker did.
Charlie McAvoy: Randy Orton. He has a nickname that is the legend killer and the amount of veterans of seen McAvoy ass check to oblivion I feel like he earns that title.
David Pastrnak: Ric Flair, always had the most over the top beautiful robes just like pastas suits
Jeremy Swayman: Kurt Angle who is an Olympic gold medalist, famous for winning with a broken neck. The only American I could think of here with any type of Gold medal was Sway. Wait I just done research and he won Bronze, I’ll change my reasoning too that how he is getting treated now is the same as fans chanting ‘you suck’ in time with Kurt Angles entrance music
Pavel Zacha and Jakub Zboril: Edge and Christian. One of the best tag teams to exist, childhood friends like our two boys (not the tag team parts just the friendship part).
Hampus Lindholm: The million dollar man Ted DiBiase…..have you seen Lindholms contract?
Tomas Nosek: Rowdy Roddy Pipper, Nosek is one of the rowdiest players I’ve seen, he lives for the drama
Connor Clifton: Cactus Jack/ Mick Foley. This wrestler is also Mankind (see Freddy) but this is another one of his egos which is hardcore which suits Cliffy hockey.
Mike Reilly: Heath Slater, classic loser just a jobber. Mike was on my template so I had to find someone that suits my boy.
Craig Smith: The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels. Shawn Michaels is my all time favourite, his entrance music is sung by himself and is called sexy boy which suits Craig.
Brad Marchand: Chris Jericho, 2 Canadians that people hate
Linus Ullmark: The Big Show, solely for the entrance music which says that he is gonna give you a show.
Patrice Bergeron: Bret ‘the hit man’ Hart. Famously Hart has a quote that is ‘the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be’ which is how I would describe Bergy
AJ Greer: CM Punk, one of the best heels there is. And i feel like Greer just knows how to taunt like him

Number of times I had to force my dad to accept the fact that it's no longer the 80s and just because he enjoyed a wrestler's work during his childhood, it doesn't mean they're still the most beloved: 3, and he's still bitter
Beloved By Gender:
Our ratio is keeping pretty steady. There was a change of 2% between rounds 3 and 4 in favor of the female wrestlers.

Public Opinion:
There's fewer than 20 wrestlers left in this tournament who had successful WWE careers before the 2000s. This tournament would make Cornette's face melt off

The AJ Styles Phenomenon:
I don't know if this is just an incredible coincidence, but for the final 3 rounds, AJ Styles has earned exactly 46 votes. In Round 2, it was 46/50 against Raymond Rougeau. In Round 3, 46/56 against D'Lo Brown. In Round 4, 46/69 against Kane. Based on the data I've seen, he is the only wrestler this has happened to. A few have had the same number of votes twice in a row, but never thrice.
Which begs the question: are there exactly 46 tumblr users who are fans of AJ Styles?
