further advice:

you are a student before anything else: schedule social outings and extra curriculars around your studies, not the other way around.

always have an ongoing to-do list; don't let it get empty: it might seem overwhelming at first, but you'll come to realise that there is always something you can be doing towards your grades.

use the specification and teaching documents from the exam board! stem subjects especially have a plethora of online documents detailing exactly what you need to know, whether it be content, maths skills and formulae, vocabulary or exam technique. print them off and go through as many as you can find!

perhaps don't bother with the EPQ: if the entry requirements of the university course you're aiming for cannot be lowered by the EPQ, it might be better to spend your time focusing on your courses, as many find that the EPQ takes just as much time as another subject.

ask for 1-to-1 sessions: if there's a topic you're struggling with, mention it to your teachers and be willing to sacrifice your free time (lunches, free periods, after schools etc.) to run through it with them 1-to-1.

fight for teachers that meet your needs: if you have a teacher who isn't helping you to excel and whose teaching methods possibly aren't the strongest, bring it up to your institution's director. it's their job to make sure that you're recieving the best standard of education possible.

talk to your tutors and teachers about your workload if it's becoming overwhelming at all.

evaluate your priorities, study methods and organisation system after each half-term.

complete your university research and application (including your reading for and writing your personal statement) before year 13 starts: it will save you so much time, as many feel that the UCAS process is like picking up another subject as well.

how did you get through it and how do I make myself not want to drop every single class i’m in every semester

how does one take more than 5 classes at a time

i am in midterm hell and i am Scared™️

oh you mean, ‘Matt, please do your actual literal job on main?’ Because this is sort of my actual literal job, friend. So don’t worry. I’ve got you.

So first thing’s first, when planning future semesters:

I would recommend against taking more than 5 classes at a time. Mathematically, it is not great for you. If you have to take more than 5, plan on doing 1-2 to during summer school. You won’t be behind. You’re fine. I swear.

Example for future class planning: For every class, look at the number of units/credits it is. That is around the number of hours that you’re gonna spend in that class a week. Now multiply that by 2. That’s about the number of hours total you’re gonna spend on that class in a week (both in class and doing homework).

That means that a 3 unit/credit class = 6 hours of work per week.

You have five of those classes. That means that you’re doing around 30hrs of school work a week. If you have six of those classes, you’re practically working a fulltime job with little to no pay and benefits.

End story: Do not take more than 5 classes a semester if you can help it.

If you can, don’t take more than 4 classes in your major per semester, either. You will die. Use electives and general education classes as your fourth or fifth class to lighten your load and give yourself something that you enjoy and know you can pass for sure. That will give you some breathing room and will help you maintain your GPA.

Coping with Overload now:

At this point in the semester, it’s a little late to be dropping classes, so what you’re going to do instead is to schedule the fuck out of your time.

You need to pick and stick to set dates/times for completing coursework and midterm projects for the next week or two. People do this in different ways, but generally speaking, people will assign projects/homework to certain days.

Example: Monday is Chemistry homework night because assignments are due on Wednesday. You only work on Chemistry on Monday. You finish the assignment and turn it in.

Tuesday is English homework day because assignments are papers and take 3 days to complete due to requiring 3 different steps: research, outlining, and writing. You do the whole researching process on Tuesday and do a basic outline. You will fill out the outline a little more on Wednesday and will then write the whole paper on Thursday so that you can turn it in then, before the Friday deadline.

On Wednesday, after you’re satisfied with your English outline, you will set that aside because Wednesdays are Math days. You will do the Math homework and/or study for 2-3 hours until your brain feels like soup. Then you will stop, do something relaxing for 30min, and then decide if you need to do more studying. If you do, repeat the study + self-care process. Go to sleep at a reasonable hour (before 2am if possible)

Do the same thing for your other 2 classes, assigning each a day and a specific task or set of tasks to complete on each day. Don’t give yourself more than 3 tasks per class/study session, because that’s how you get overwhelmed and into an anxiety spiral.

Apply self-care (breaks, snacks, drinks, music) liberally while doing assignments.

Other tips: figure out how you study.

If you study best in a group, grab some folks from your class and form a study group. If you are in STEM especially, it is expected that you will form study groups. This is how studying happens in STEM, medical, and law fields. It is nigh impossible to do all that labor on your own. Yes, I am serious. Make a study group, even if that’s you and 1 other person.

If you can find a study guide, take it to study group or block out an hour or two and do the whole thing. If you don’t have a study guide, make one yourself out of your homework/assignments and test yourself with flashcards or writing out definitions and forcing yourself to explain the different parts of cycles you learned in class.

If you are in a humanities/liberal arts major, you need to figure out if you study best by reviewing your notes, by re-listening to the lectures, by explaining concepts to others, or by writing it all out as if it was an essay.

If you need to write an essay and are stuck with where to start, reach out for help from a tutor if your school has one, or just start by doing 15 minutes of brainstorming to figure out what you feel about the topic and what evidence/ideas would work to answer it. Pick apart the prompt to see what it is truly asking you to do, write out the components of the prompt separately on a separate page and start answering those question as if they were short answers.

Then when you’ve got that, you can start noting bits of evidence to add to support your points and BAM, just like that, you’ve got an outline. Write a thesis statement at the top that addresses the Who, What, Why and How You’re Going to Prove it of your essay and you’re ready to go.

Example thesis statement: “The world represented in Oh God, How do I Study by Matt Deniigiq includes references to time management, course planning, and big-picture thinking to emphasize the broader theme that this one shit semester is not going to destroy student’s lives. This is evident in the droll humor used throughout the piece and the fact that the author keeps halting in paragraphs to answer emails from frazzled students.”

**yes, your thesis can be 2 sentences long. It’s allowed, I promise.

Know that these 5 classes will not end your life.

Honestly, like, speaking as someone who does this for a living, at public schools anything higher than a C is grand. It’s not usually required for you to list your GPA on job apps later on (I’ve never been asked). No one actually cares about your GPA in social situations.

As long as my students have higher than Cs in their classes and they aren’t like, nursing students, I’m cool with their progress, so give yourself a break if you can.

Also know that getting a low grade in 1 class as a freshmen doesn’t actually fuck up your GPA as bad as you think it will. Like, there’s a lot of complicated shit around this that I could go into, but generally speaking, if you fail one class (and I mean FAIL-fail it. Fs and D-s. None of this ‘UwU I got a C so I failed’), then by the time you’re a junior or a senior, if you haven’t failed additional shit, that F/D- is barely going to shift your GPA.

Like, we’re talking .1 shifts around then. Maybe a .3 shift if you’re at the end of your sophomore year. That’s the diff between a 2.5 and a 2.4. Or a 3.3 and a 3.0. You can make that up almost entirely by taking another round of classes and getting As and Bs (again, the mechanics are complicated, so you’re just gonna have to take my word here).

So yeah, shoot for Cs or higher and know that these classes aren’t the end-all be-alls of your lives.

(For context, if I get a student with a 3.0 or higher, I’m fucking ELATED. I’m not even joking. Y’all will be fine.)

Hey Snarklings!

Are you surprised that I’m still alive? I know I am (lols am I even relevant anymore?) Before I get into my whole MCAT prep strategy, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for leaving you guys in the dust. I have been very stressed lately and I just felt like I was letting you guys down which was why I made a really hard (but spontaneous) decision on my academic career. Of course I cannot comment right now on what I did/planning to do, but an upcoming blog post would be up in the next couple of days to explain the whole grey area that I was stuck in. Okay, it’s time to put away the tissue boxes and dive into every pre-meds worse nightmare: The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)

Disclaimer: This is my method and it may or may not work for you, so please take it with a grain of salt because, the way that I learn may be different from you, but it is a good idea to see how others approach this scary test.

What is the MCAT?

In short, the MCAT is a standardized test taken on a computer program to measure a prospective medical student’s potential to succeed medical school. Think of it as foreshadow of one’s ability to do well on painstakingly long exams that are cut up into blocks: Since most of medical schools in the US and Canada require doctors in training to take many board exams that can be 8-9 hours long.

Another reason why the MCAT is administered is to see whether the applicant can use background knowledge of the subject (biochemistry, biology, chemistry, psychology/sociology, physics, critical reasoning skills, etc) and integrate with other sciences to synthesize and draw an objective answer to a novel/unknown situation. This makes the MCAT different from others standardized tests such as SAT or ACT since these tests are more on memory recall and regurgitation, while the MCAT is more on integration and application to unknown situations. Think of it like this, when a doctor walks into a patient’s room, they know some things (the knowledge they’ve been taught in med school) and there’s probably things that they don’t know about a patient’s health, but when a doctor integrates what he/she knows and connect it to the unknown they can solve problems.

What is the MCAT tested on?

Since, one of the reasons why the MCAT is administered is to test your endurance on future medical school board exams such as: USMLE step 1, step 2 CK, step 2 CS, Step 3 if you are in the United States or the MCCEE, NAC, MCCQE part 1, MCCQE part 2 in (Canadian boards), and Comlex Level 1, Level 2CE, Level 2PE, Level 3 (Osteopathic med schools/DO). They do this by testing you on undergraduate courses and are broken down into 4 sections/blocks

Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems

Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS)

Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems

Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behaviour

Prior to Taking the MCAT

I highly recommend taking the required courses before taking the MCAT. The AAMC recommends to take the following pre-med classes:

Introductory (first year) Biology (2 semesters/1 year)

Introductory/General Chemistry (2 semesters/1 year)

Organic chemistry (2 semesters/1 year)

Biochemistry (1 semester)

Introductory Physics (2 semesters/1 year)

Psychology (1 semester)

Sociology (1 semester)

Now I never took a sociology class and I am planning on taking physics in my upcoming (and last) school year of uni. But that doesn’t really matter since you can just self study for it.

So MCAT prep cannot be MCAT prep without a good set of MCAT books for you to review on. Now, there are many MCAT companies out there and a lot of people are confused on which one they would get to the point that everyone keeps on asking the same question: What books are YOU using? Hey, are those books good? Listen, your success on the MCAT does not depend on what company that you choose to get your books from. Why? Because it is you and how well you reviewed and practice those questions on a DAILY BASIS. I know people who got into med school by using Kaplan, I know people who got rejected who used Kaplan, and the same goes for other prep companies such as The Princeton Review, Examkrackers, The Berkely Review, etc. It doesn’t matter. Just pick one and stick with one. Do not. I repeat. DO NOT BUY TWO BOOKS OF THE SAME SUBJECT BECAUSE YOU THINK THAT ONE COMPANY DOES A BETTER “JOB.’ Again, It is you who will determine your own success, not a book.

Now, for me, I was about to buy the Kaplan MCAT series but, my mother surpised me on my 21st birthday with the NextStep MCAT Content Review and Practice Passages. At first, I was bummed out but as I went along, I realized that the books are doing its job: Helping me review what I learned in undergrad (wipes tears away; literally every time I turn a page I get flashbacks). And the best part is: It was free since it was my birthday gift so I did not have to spend a dime.

When I found something that I did not fully understand or the book did not give me a detailed answer I usually used Khan Academy videos (There’s a whole section just for the MCAT with practice problems). Other videos/channels worth mentioning:

AK Lectures for biochemistry and general chemistry (his explanations for thermodynamics is so straight to the point, they’re super clutch)

The Organic Chemistry Tutor: MCAT Test Prep General Chemistry Review Study Guide Part 1 and MCAT General Chemistry Lectures Review Prep Part 2 – Equations & Practice Questions

Leah4SciMCAT for doing MCAT Math Without a Calculator and Amino Acids for MCAT/Biochem students. I also looked at Fischer Projections for MCAT Orgo and Biochemistry which helped so much since she sues fun mnemonics and straight to the point concepts that just makes the learning fun and easy.

Bozeman science for their anatomy and physiology sections for every organ system mentioned in the biology MCAT book. I also looked at a video or two from the AP chemistry, AP biology, and AP physics (which I remembered fondly back in high school and so I’m familiar with them thus, I didn’t look at every video but just ones that I had trouble with, ex: transcription vs translation.)

My method for studying: I tend to study in rotations or two chapters of the same subject a day until completion. The image below is how that looks like in my mini day planner:

Since I do not have a job nor am I in school during the summer I was able to study for 8 hours a day and found myself going through rotations quicker than I expected. Before I go to bed I reviewed what I learned and anything that I do not finished I would have to finish in the morning before starting a new rotation.

Active Learning

So when I start a new chapter I use my metacognitive abilities: What do I know vs what do I don’t know.

Let’s take the endocrine system as an example. I know that the endocrine is invovled in hormone secretion and regulation of the metabolic oathways that maintains homeostasis. I know an example of this would be aldosterone (a steroid hormone) and vasopressin (a peptide) hormone helps regulate homeostasis by repsonding to low fluid levels and by increasing fluid retention. But what I do not know is how exactly they achieve this: thus when I’m studying that’s my goal or my purpose. I am learning to apply and find answers to my questions.

Every time a paragraph says something about a hormone I would turn it into a question and write the answer in my own words. Here’s an example on tropic versus non tropic hormones:

In orange I wrote the section of the chapter: Regulation

I wrote a capital Q for question and A for answer.

And sometimes I write a little flow chart for easy summary of what I learned

The reason why I used this system was for 3 reasons: (1) By writing out the section in a different colour, it acts as a study guide (you know with all the topics/questions pertaining to one part of the chapter for a test). (2) Turning the info in a paragraph into a question and answers makes it interactive and makes you think about what you are learning; sort of like flashcards. I would cover the answer portion with another piece of paper and just talk/aggressively whisper out the answer (the answer doesn’t have to be word by word but just similar to what it is). (3) When it is time for revision: Your notes are in a Q/A format or like test which is better than writing a bunch of notes and just passively looking over.

As you can see I love flow charts for sequential pathways and showing the cause and effects of each step (what increases or decreases, which hormone is involved, etc)

I will write a more detailed post on what I put into my MCAT notebooks and what I look for when reading or extracting information from the review books. So just hold on and be patient.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Knowledge is power but practice makes perfect. Remember that the MCAT will not really test your ability to recall facts straight from the book; this is not a trivia show. It is your ability to apply known information (your MCAT content review) and integrate them with other information in an unknown situation (the MCAT passages). That’s why I like that my MCAT books have practice passages at the end of each chapter. I also bought extra practice passages from NextStep because they really do help me understand the content and the timing. If you do not have practice passages right now, go to the Khan academy MCAT section and there’s loads of them (but they are really easy though).

Also, I really enjoyed watching videos on YouTube on how to approach passages and seeing what other people’s strategies and methods are. I tend to integrate what others do with my own method, but everyone is different so just take it with a grain of salt. After going through a few passages or so, review your mistakes! Then again look up your Q/A notes and see where you went wrong. When you do this, you’re allocating your attention areas that need it. This really helped me retain information whilst, practicing applying concepts with other concepts. Another reason why, is that the questions on the MCAT are really different from your college classes. Again, you’re not regurgitating facts out, you’re applying what you know with what you don’t know by looking at superficial similarities and coming up with the best answer. Since this is a new skill, the only way to learn it is through practice.

I am planning on making a post about how I breakdown science and CARS passages as well so stay tuned.

Spaced Repetition Is Key

One of the keys to success for the MCAT is repetition for retention. If you do not review, you will forget it. That’s why I always made sure that after a section of a chapter I would look over what I had so far and really try to understand what I just learned and see how it relates to other chapters or to the other subjects in one way or another to get the BIG PICTURE. Then, before I go to sleep I will look over at the chapter again as a whole and annotate anything that I think needs more detail. Then the next day before starting a new chapter, I quickly look at all the previous chapters by talking aloud (or aggressively whispering if you’re around people, sorry to the girl at Starbucks who has to put up with my) and just make connections to it. Over time, I looked at all the previous chapters so much that I can recall many concepts.

1 day later look at your old Q/A notes then maybe 3 days later do it again

Congratulations, all the info you’ve mastered are now stored in your long term memory. It is permanent until you die (unless if you get amnesia).

Measuring and Evaluating Success

Ada was founded to close the gender gap while addressing the labor shortage in Seattle Tech. Over the course of the three and a half years that we’ve been operating, our mission has pivoted to focus on diversifying Tech in more ways than just gender. We recognize that changing the landscape of Tech must be intersectional and that our road will not be without bumps, detours, and u-turns. We believe that Ada’s role in dismantling the homogenous culture of Tech plays out not only by training qualified, diverse entry-level engineers, but also by pushing both ourselves and our partner companies to reflect on and modify inclusion practices. Every day we learn more about what works and what doesn’t. We continue to iterate and we challenge ourselves and our community to be supportive, inclusive, and life-long learners.

We can’t just forge ahead without taking the time to evaluate our successes and our failures. We must learn from our mistakes and constantly evolve in order to be successful. With every cohort we have tweaked and changed and improved.

Here’s a small sample of how our program has evolved:

-In Cohort 2, students from the first cohort organized and executed an Adie-to-Adie mentoring program that they eventually entrusted to the administration to continue.

-In Cohort 3, we introduced a regular CS Fundamentals curriculum focused on algorithms and data structures, as well as created a tutoring system.

-In Cohort 4, we started formalizing a student-focused social justice curriculum and piloted our first Inclusion Summit, training our board and our partner companies on implicit biases and how to be better allies.

-In Cohort 5, we expanded our space and went through an interview blitz to hire five new employees, doubling our staff.

-In Cohort 6, we bought on a student support counselor to address the emotional needs of our students and to flesh out our social justice curriculum. We doubled our number of admitted students per cohort for which the additional staff was crucial in allowing us to create a more operationally sustainable program. We also hired a Diversity Consultant to assess our program, specifically in relationship to our support of People of Color, and provided us with tangible short-term and long-term recommendations for program changes.

-Cohort 7 has just begun, but we just piloted our first applicant workshop, where we invited POC applicants who applied during a previous cohort to learn about Excel and how to sell themselves in their resume and essays from two of our Adies.

To be honest, in the beginning we were struggling just to keep our head above water. We had more work than we could keep up with and less people than we needed. We made mistakes, and we learned. When we reflect on how far we’ve come and how much we’ve accomplished in a short three-year span, we are both proud and humbled. It hasn’t been easy, and we know we still have growth to make and a long road ahead of us.

In early 2016, we set diversity goals to have 50+% of our student population be People of Color (POC - defined as not white) and 30+% be Underrepresented Minorities (URM - defined as Black/Latinx/Native American/Pacific Islander). Since setting these goals, we have made significant progress in diversifying our student population. We made adjustments to our processes and operations and started focusing our efforts more intentionally towards these goals, including finding better ways to support URM populations. We track many axes of diversity, but when setting our goals for 2016 we knew that we had to be strategic in selecting them.

As we set our goals for 2017, we’ve stepped back, collected, and studied our program stats.

We have spent the last few months collecting and computing our success metrics: from diversity to graduation to placement to retention. We strive to have 100% graduation and placement by graduation. We’re analyzing the trends and discussing where we’ve fallen short and what we need to change.

Note the following:

-There are many more axes we’d like to track, but this is our start.

-For our purposes: People of Color (POC) is defined as not white and Underrepresented Minorities (URM) is defined as Black/Latinx/Native American/Pacific Islander and is a subset of POC.

-Students who do not graduate are counted in the cohort in which they began the program.

-Students who defer to a later cohort are counted in the cohort with which they graduate.

-After the reporting of diversity percentages, each breakdown of numbers is presented in 4 categories: overall average, average for white students, average for POC students and average for URM students. So for example, in Cohort 1, 93.75% of admitted students graduated (15 out of 16), but only 66.67% of admitted URM students graduated (2 out of 3).

-Conversion from Intern to FT represents the percentage of students who accept an offer as a full-time developer at the company where they interned. Every Ada graduate participates in a 5-6 month internship (6 months for Cohort 1 and 2, 5 months for Cohorts 3 and beyond).

-Students can have several outcomes after graduation, including: accepting a full-time (FT) developer role, accepting a subject-matter-adjacent role (e.g. Technical PM), deciding to work as a contractor, continuing their education through another program, or not finding employment in a related field. Accepting a FT dev job represents the percentage of students who move into full-time, paid development work. Subject-matter-adjacent roles, contract positions, and continuing education (e.g. LEAP, Floodgate) are not considered full-time development work in this context.

-Average base salary represents the base salary compensation for graduates accepting a full-time developer role. Students who do not report their salary data are excluded from this average.

-Placement Period is the six months immediately following a student’s graduation in which we track what a graduate does after graduation.

-Canonical Placement represents the placement rate for graduates, excluding any students who are still in their Placement Period. A student is deemed “placed” if they 1) accept a full-time (FT) developer role, 2) accept a subject-matter-adjacent role (e.g. Technical PM), 3) accept work as a contractor, 4) decide to be an entrepreneur starting their own business, or 5) continue their education through another program that pays a monthly salary greater than $6,500. A breakdown of the number of students excluded and when students actually find placement is broken down in the Placement Time Breakdown.

-Return to Job Search <1 yr represents the percentage of graduates who return to the job search within one year of graduation. So for example, in Cohort 2, 9.09% of graduates returned to the job search after graduating (2 out of 22). 28.57% of POC graduates returned to the job search (2 out of 7) and 50% of URM graduates returned to the job search (1 out of 2).

-Received job support post-initial placement represents the percentage of graduates who have been supported through networking connections and career advice post-graduation and post-initial placement (FT dev, subject matter adjacent, contract work, or continued paid education). Every graduate is supported in finding their first placement.

Just as we will ask our companies to reflect on the trends of POC and URM graduates entering industry, we also challenge ourselves to take a close look at why our POC and URM students have a lower graduation rate. We are also comparing this data to the global bootcamp community and how our outcomes compare, but that doesn’t mean we are going to stop trying to be better.

This data gives us hard evidence of both our successes and our failures. We must continue to hone our ability to support all our students, particularly those who experience hardships not only systemically, but also institutionally within our very walls. As we look forward, we must be better and we must do the work to create success for all of our students equitably. We also feel it is important for our company sponsors to continue their work to further diversify and create inclusive environments that successfully hire and retain talent, particularly those who are underrepresented. We will continue to work with our company partners on providing our students with great internship experiences and post graduate opportunities. As our Adie community grows, we also look forward to evaluating ways in which we can support better retention in the industry - post graduation - for all students.
