I don't think I should really be supporting this as it seems like a delay in my getting the next chapter ... but I can't wait to see which one - Chris or MC - is going to do this: Takes UNO wayyy too seriously.
These are from the “Which Member of your OTP” ask I had posted a whiiiiiile back (I do them when I get inspired, blocked or generally slapped by my muse)…
Lol a blurb with almost 2500 words. OMG WTH hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣
“UNO”
MC’s eyes narrow at Chris as he stares her downwith a similar expression.
Ethan and Steph go silent while Zack scoffs atthem both instead. “Can you two just play already? We don’t have all weekend.”
The end of Chris’s lips curl slightly and MCknows she’s in trouble. He’s been keeping up with how she’s been organizing hercards, clearly clumping them in what he now believes is in rainbow color order. She’s also been keeping her special cards to one end, but based on how sheplayed her last hand, Chris is pretty sure she has run out of specials. Thatgoes for all of her red cards too.
MC tries not to react as Chris lays down a redtwo on top of the yellow two Ethan had just played. She was initially relievedthat her boyfriend’s best friend had played a yellow card because that colorwas currently making up about eighty percent of her hand at the moment.Unfortunately, those suppressed fears came roaring back to life as Chris placesthat red card on top of the stack.
She has no reds. She has no twos. MC looks upand into Chris’s eyes, immediately recognizing his triumphant smirk. He hadother options, so this was one hundred percent intentional. ‘What. An. Ass.’
He doesn’t say a word as he steadily holds hergaze. MC chews on her tongue and straightens her back as she reaches for thedraw pile, silently wishing for a red, a two, or any version of the wild card.
Chris narrows his eyes as he watches herconfidently move towards the center of the table, her eyes never leaving his ashe wonders how she’s suddenly is so calm when they both know she’s in trouble. At least that’s what he thought.
MC takes a slow, steady breath as her fingertipsmake contact with the cards, hesitating just a second to make a silent prayerto the Uno Gods. The others no longer care about their own hands as they watchthe Hartfeld couple sitting next to each other in their silent face-off. Stephslightly turns her head to her left, glancing at both Zack and Ethan, barelymanaging to swallow her laughter when they both close their eyes and slowlyshake their heads almost perfectly in sync at the two across from them.
The tall blonde slowly lifts the card to eyelevel before opening her eyes. Chris watches her face as it graduallytransitions from a focused state of calm to a face-splitting grin topped withsparkling eyes. She can’t help but scream as she slams the card down onto thepile. The Uno Gods heard her pleas.
The Hartfeld quarterback’s eyes go wide as hesees it was a draw two card. It was also yellow, making him suddenly realize bythe snarky smile on her lips that she had been paying attention to his handjust as much as he had hers. MC might not have any reds, but he doesn’t haveany yellows either, and she knew it the whole time.
“Shit.” He hisses under his breath as he grabstwo from the draw pile, immediately realizing neither were special or yellow.
He hangs his head in defeat as he adds them tohis personal stack. Steph clears her throat and pulls a card from her handbefore placing it down on top of MCs and looking towards Ethan. Chris looks upat them both to see they are clearly doing their best not to laugh at hismisfortune. Ethan cracks his neck lightly, not meeting his friend’s eyes as hedecides his next move, reaching for his own yellow card before flicking it ontothe pile.
Zack glances up and gives Chris an apologeticsmile as he too pulls a yellow card from his hands and places it on the pile aswell. Chris watches as MC’s smile grows, her hands easily pulling out a yellowcard to add to the growing stack in the middle. He almost forgets about thegame, about his cards or even about winning as he watches a rainbow ofexpressions flit across her face. She was so happy, so eager, that he couldn’thelp but smile.
That is until her eyes turn to his and he seessomething in them. His own smile falters and he hesitates before looking at herchoice. If her jubilant smile said anything, it was that he, ChristopherPowell, was in trouble. His blue eyes narrow as his smile continues to fall andhis gaze settles on the stack in front of him. It’s a reverse, and stillyellow.
The cards in her hands are dropping one afterthe other, and Chris starts to panic. He watches helplessly as the others allplay different cards. The first was a yellow, followed by a green. He needssomeone to drop a red, or he needs to be lucky enough to have the same type ofcard that Steph planned to lay down next.
Holding his breath, Chris watches patiently. Atleast he appears that way on the outside as his insides twist in a knot ofanxiety while he watches the strawberry blonde gently placed her card on thestack.
“Hell yes.” Chris whoops out as he pullsa card from his hand with lightning speed and slams it down on the top of thenow messy pile.
MC’s triumphant eyes grow wide with shock as shesees that he not only changed the color to red, clearly in his advantage, butit was also a skip card. When she looks up she finds him already staring at herwith the sweetest smile.
It was disgusting.
Her eyes narrow as she holds his gaze, doing herbest to glare him down as his smile grows. Chris loves this. His girlfriend isvery competitive and he enjoys fighting her for titles. It doesn’t matter whatit is. Board games, anything athletic, even finding the best parking spot. Itreally doesn’t matter. The chase is the point. The look on her face is thepoint. The way she smolders is the point. He loves every bit of it.
It isn’t that he enjoys angering her. He learnedearly on that she was never really upset in moments like these. She too enjoysthe game, the chase, just as much as he does. It also helps that all thetension and excitement that builds during their personal competitions oftentransfers into the bedroom at some point too, but the win comes first. Thequestion always is, who it will be. Who takes home the crown.
Zack quickly plays a card and glances towardsEthan, the two sharing a knowing look that things were probably about to get alittle weird between their two best friends. The red-head shakes his head andtosses down a card, almost immediately followed by his girlfriend as the threegrow eerily quiet as Chris looks to see what card is on the top of the stack.
His grin stays in place as he so eloquentlyplaces another red skip on the top of the pile, greedily watching MC’s face asshe processes his choice. She sucks in her cheeks, holding both sides betweenher teeth as she breathes in deep through her nose and turns to Zack with asmall smile. Chris swears he can feel heat radiating off of her.
She watches patiently, her eyes flicking aroundthe space to count everyone’s cards, taking note of how they shuffle each intheir hands to get an idea of what they might have left and comparing it to herown cards. Chris starts holding his cards in a condensed stack though, makingit extremely difficult for her to tell how many he has left. It looks like hestill has a enough, but it was very possible he had less than her now.
‘This isn’t good.’ She thinks to herself.
MC looks up as it becomes her boyfriend’s turn, her eyes doing their best to determine how many cards are in his massive hands.Chris knows she’s trying to count his cards though, so he keeps shifting themin his palms, easily hiding them from view as she leans forward slightly. Hecan’t help but smirk as he decides which of his remaining two cards to use. Hekeeps it face down as he leans in slightly to place it on the pile, onlyturning it face up at the last second so he can be ready to watch MC’s expressionas he does.
“Uno.”
Holding her breath as Chris speaks, the tallblonde stares at the back of his hand. She loves those hands, or she used to.Right now they belong to the enemy. Right now they are out to attack her. Soright now, they have to pay.
It’s another reverse.
MC’s breathing becomes shallow as she finds himsmirking, his eyes focusing on nothing in particular as he focuses on lockingwith her burning gaze. Steph looks down at the stack, her eyes growing wide asshe sees what color it is. Her green eyes shoot up and meet MC’s, herexpression apologetic as she frowns and glances at Chris before focusing backon MC.
The platinum blonde clenches her jaw slowly asshe realizes what’s about to happen. Chris picks up on their silent conversationjust like Ethan and Zack do, his own face splitting into a triumphant grin ashe watches Steph lay down a reverse card.
“It’s the only blue card I have MC…” Steph sayssoftly as Ethan lays his hand on her shoulder, his own pair shaking with silentlaughter.
MC gives her an honest smile, never once sendingher friend any angry thoughts or feelings. “It’s all good. He has to have ablue or a reverse to win. Pretty crappy odds if you ask me.”
She can still win this. Chris might not have ablue card, or a reverse. She continues to repeat this mantra over and over inher head as she turns her eyes to look at Chris without moving her head.
The smile on his face feels like a double edgesword. She instantly knows what it means. Chris is about to drop exactly whatshe said, causing her to loose. While part of her feels hot and full of denial, the rest of her wants nothing more than to kiss him right now. That lopsidedsmirk of his makes her feel all kinds of things and her thoughts were suddenlyfoggy.
Her eyes slowly glide down his body, followinghis arm as his hands stretch out and unfold to reveal a single card facing theground. His eyes sparkle while he enjoys watching the recognition wash acrossher face, her features transitioning like a flower shunning the cold. This ishis favorite part. Beating MC usually fires her up in ways nothing else can.
This outcome probably happens less than half ofthe time because she’s such a fierce competitor and more cunning than anyoneChris really knows, but he also doesn’t really mind losing to her. Losing tosomeone else is a different story, something Ethan and Ryan know well, but whenChris does beat MC, it’s always the sweetest of wins.
MC feels the blood drain from her face as shewatches his hand move to toss the card onto the pile, her eyes glued to thesmall rectangle as it seems to float through the air in slow motion. Before ittouches the stack, her hazel eyes shoot back to his hands, verifying that hewas in fact cardless now, a part of her hoping his earlier Uno shout was ajoke. Her gaze darts up to his face, seeing him preparing to soak in his hardearned glory. Her eyes grow wide as she sees the card hit the table at the edgeof her vision.
“Or…”
It wasn’t just his last card, it was awild draw four. The ultimate burn, especially as the last card played towin. Chris’s blues are glued to hers, watching as her hazel eyes do their bestto burn him with their steady gaze. He startles when out of nowhere shelaunches towards him, knocking all the cards out of place as she lands on topof him, straddling his body with her own. He lets out a startled “oof” as helands on his back across the carpeted floor, his eyes going comically wide ather assault.
“A draw FOUR?!” She cries out, her facecompletely serious except for the slight lift on the corner of her lips.
Chris starts cackling and reaches to grab at herwaist, reaching for some of her most ticklish spots to help free himself fromher attack. Neither notice as the others laugh and get up to refill theirdrinks in the kitchen, clearly giving the two some time to themselves. His eyessearch her face, willing her to look at him, but when she doesn’t budge, hebegins to tickle her again as punishment for her defiance.
MC begins to gasp, letting out the occasionalsqueal as her eyes finally lift to meet his. “Chris!”
“Hey, you started this baby. I won. Fair andsquare.” His cocky grin makes her frown deeply, not really needing thereminder.
“I demand a rematch.” She says simply.
His left eyebrow arches. “Oh do you now…”
“Yes.” Her eyes narrow, daring him to deny herthis.
“Uno?” He says with amusement as he squeezes herwaist slightly, making her squirm as she straddles him on the floor.
“Rummy.”
Chris snorts, knowing that she’s trying toguarantee a win. “What?! No.”
MC quickly turns the tables and reaches for hissides, finding his very small but still existing ticklish spot near the bottomof his ribs.
“Cheater!” He barks out.
“Rematch!” She demands as she grabs at hisprominent lats on his side and gently squeezes.
“Oh my go–MC! Damn, fine!” Hefinally gasps out as he attempts to push himself out from under her and escapethe horribly ticklish feeling.
MC holds on though, tightly gripping his hipsbetween her thighs and shifting with him as he tries to scoot away. With atriumphant smirk she lays her body on his, hovering just enough so her facehangs over his.
His eyes finally meet hers and he snorts beforelooking away again. “You’re evil woman.”
She presses her lips together as she tries notto laugh. When she doesn’t respond he turns his gaze back to hers and playfullyrolls his eyes when he sees her expression. MC snickers and leans down, covering his lips with her own. She knows he doesn’t mean it in any way otherthan pointing out her relentlessness for a rematch, and to be honest, she knowsshe deserves worse for going for his figurative Achilles heel.
Feeling him soften under her, MC grins, hissmile mirroring her own. Losing to Chris wasn’t that bad. MC knows she willstill do her best to win in the future, but her focus is going to be more oncelebrating the win, regardless of who takes home the metaphorical trophy.Right now, they both feel like winners, their arms currently wrapped aroundtheir true trophies.
