Alan Cumming returns to the International Festival with a performance exploring the true character of Scotland's national bard Robert Burns. Burn, a dance-theatre production, It will be staged as part of the 75th Edinburgh international festival (EIF) in August.

Robert Burns: The poet’s life is different. Taking a deep and intimate look at Robert Burns and his legacy Burns spent most of his days in grinding poverty, which took its toll on his health and contributed to his death in 1796 at the age of 37. He was constantly unfaithful to his long-suffering wife, Jean Armour; she bore him nine children, the youngest of whom was born on the day of his funeral. He had four children with other women, and multiple affairs.

This world premiere dance-theatre show challenges the ‘biscuit tin’ image of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national bard, and goes beyond the poetry to focus on the man himself – his poverty, his personal tragedy, his struggles with mental health and his spectacular success.

A co-production between Edinburgh International Festival, the National Theatre of Scotland, and New York City’s The Joyce Theater, Burn is a new creation from the legendary Scottish actor, author and International Festival favourite Alan Cumming and the Olivier Award-winning choreographer Steven Hoggett (Black Watch, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and featuring the music of Anna Meredith (Mercury Prize nominated for Fibs).

Lea Michele, the current star of “Funny Girl” on Broadway, and Myles Frost, who won a 2022 Tony Award for his portrayal of Michael Jackson in the Broadway musical “MJ,” announced the nominations. Some categories were read live on CBS at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, and others were unveiled through a livestream on the Tony Awards YouTube page. A total of 38 shows were vying for Tonys this year. To be eligible, a Broadway show must have opened between April 29, 2022, and April 27, 2023. This year’s awards ceremony is slated for Sunday, June 11. “Some Like It Hot,” a Broadway musical version of the Billy Wilder film, picked up the most nominations of any show, with 13 in all. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: ‘In Trouble Again’ in Rehearsals

One example is the moment a collection of levitating suitcases morphs into the top of the Hogwarts Express. Harry's son Albus (Sean Rees-Wemyss) is on the roof, facing Draco Malfoy's boy Scorpius (William McKenna). As the train speeds along a twisting track, with a fierce wind whipping in all directions, they struggle to keep their balance.

Glimpsing a few of the technical manoeuvres makes this scene no less impressive. During intermission, the couple beside me wonders aloud how the actors didn't fall off. Straps over their shoes, maybe, or Velcro soles and hidden handrails?

It took two years for this scene to come to fruition. Many ideas were devised, tested and scrapped; the process repeating until everyone was satisfied. Some pointed out it would be simpler if they ditched the suitcases, but Tiffany and Hoggett held firm.

For Hoggett, it was more than a bit of fun – he had to ensure his performers didn't tumble off the Hogwarts Express and wind up on crutches. So he installed a discreet ridge on each side of the roof, giving the boys something to push their feet against. The mental hurdles were tougher.

At first, Rees-Wemyss and McKenna practiced on the floorboards, then climbed on the prop and did it again. Once they'd mastered this, Hoggett threw new elements at them one-by-one – wind, synthetic smoke, costumes, sound – then plunged the stage into darkness.
