Lighting

Natural lighting

I want to keep the environment inside the bath house to be quite enclosed but I still need some natural light to stream in. I am inspired by this Horizontal house by Eastern Design Office where they have horizontal slits for windows. This allows natural light in but still makes the inside and outside space quite separate while still being able to see the scenery outside. This will allow enough light but you will still feel enclosed within the walls during the bathing experience.

Artificial lighting

I want to there to be lighting in the pools themselves so they are illuminated. I am also in having some sort of lighting that goes on the floor along the walls. This will create a glowing lined pathway along the walls and lighting them up. The environment won’t be too bright but enough to see and still feel depth in the environment. These kind of lights that are in floor are also less visible during the day when they aren’t on so it won’t be as noticeable.

During the day inside the pool will not be illuminated fully because the natural light will be able to give enough light to reflect the water onto the surrounding walls, and then at night it can be fully lit up to glow in the room.

A Project Deeply Rooted in History The Montreal Athletics Association (MAA) sports club is an institution that has endured for more than a century and has been a privileged witness to the evolution of Montreal, Canada. Founded in 1881, and rooted in its clubhouse since 1905, it is a symbol of sporting activities that served as a gathering place for residents of the prestigious Golden Square Mile neighbourhood. The project consists of a renovation of the sports club, as well as the addition of a 32-storey tower above the existing heritage facades, while preserving two historic facades during construction.

Particular attention was given to the perception of the tower from the pedestrian scale, which was an important aspect of the project during the design process. The result is an unchanged pedestrian perspective of the historic facades, with the original streetscape and view of the sports club being maintained.

Inspired by the existing built environment and context The three-part architectural concept of the tower includes a base, a body, and a crown, inspired by the arrangement of the existing main facade and the period in which the original building was constructed. The materials chosen for the project and the precision of its geometrical grid creates a balance between history and modernity.

The choice of materials used in the construction of the tower was inspired by the facades of the existing MAA building, as well as by the quality, durability, and richness of materials typical of the Golden Square Mile district. Red brick, grey Stanstead stone, black metal windows, and champagne-coloured metal accents have been integrated into the language of the new tower to extend the richness and classic elegance of the historic building.

Prestigious Recognition After a challenging year marked by a pandemic that transformed society in many ways, this year’s theme was “Architecture for a Changing World”. The A+Awards received more than 5,000 entries from 100+ countries, and only 5 finalists from each category were selected for long-listing by the jury. Finalists were then presented online during a public voting period, resulting in more than 400,000 ballots casts in the 94 categories.

Materials

I want to keep the range of materials to be very minimal to emphasise on the curves of the walls. I want to allow some natural light in which will create a reflection of the water onto the ceiling and illuminating the room.

I really enjoy this kind of colour palette like the Euphoria spa house in Greece. It is grey/blue and is very neutral which allows the space to speak for itself which is what I want for my design. The pool water looks very blue and it is creating a tint on the walls.

From this article (https://www.architonic.com/en/project/deca-architecture-euphoria/20122318) there is this sentence about the Euphoria bathhouse that I feel resonates similarly to my design.

“At the very bottom, carved spaces where elliptical geometries of different scale intertwine, guide the visitors through constantly changing catacomb-like passages containing the greeting areas and facilities of the spa.”

I feel as if the pathways are also ‘catacomb-like passages’ leading into each pool area.

Concrete

For the main material in the space I will use concrete and have it smoothed out. It is extremely durable and has an organic feel that I am looking for. With concrete, I will need to use steel for the shape I want and then the concrete can be sprayed on. The steel is what gives the concrete structure and support. You can also add a waterproofing additive to make it non-porous and to be able to withstand the wet and steamy environment. Concrete can also be rendered to give a smooth finish. This can also be used as the lining and flooring of the pools.

I will also use concrete for the flooring around all the pool areas because you can add non slip additives which is necessary for flooring in wet environment.

Colour palette

I want the environment to feel cool and neutral to create a calming and soothing environment

Walls + floor

I don’t want to stray too far from the original colour of the concrete to keep that organic and original feel so I’m going to choose a cool toned grey. I will choose the darker for the walls and the lighter grey for the flooring.

Pool

I want the pool to be of a slight blue colour like also in the Euphoria pool photo because I want the room to glow from the blue colour and illuminate the room slightly like the Strøm Spa.
