I translated the rest of Murat’s letter on Napoleon’s birthday in 1808 (where he claimed he couldn’t visit him because he didn’t want to wear the same uniform again), mainly because it ties into my recent NaNoWriMo excerpt with the drama over some horses. I’ll probably go back and edit the chapter eventually now that the picture is a little clearer; it seems that Murat, in addition to taking too many horses out of Berg to be sent to Naples, may also have appropriated some horses which should have been left behind for the new King of Spain (Joseph Bonaparte), and Napoleon blamed this for Joseph making his official entry into Madrid with only six horses, whereas royal carriages were traditionally pulled by eight. (This is the type of molehill Napoleon tended to make a mountain out of when he was angry about something else, like, say, the recent defeat at Bailén.) Anyway, this letter is a great example of Murat defending himself against what he considers an unjust attack, with the typical dash of spite (you were really mean to me so I’m skipping your birthday bash) and the but-I-still-love-you-forever cherry on top.
(And thanks to the lovely @histoireettralala for helping me through a couple stumbling blocks in the translation ❤️)

Murat to Napoleon - Paris, 15 August 1808
[Leaving out the first paragraph where he details some reports he's received from Naples, in a nutshell the English are reinforcing Sicily and had sent an expedition to Spain.]
Sire, Your Majesty's reproaches always make me unhappy, however, as Your Majesty has been deceived, it is my duty to tell him the truth, which I was unable to do yesterday evening, appalled as I was by the persistence of my enemies (who can only be those of Your Majesty) in seizing every occasion which may give me the appearance of a wrong.
Sire, my studfarms are composed of: 1st in stallions, of Arabian horses and English and Norman mares that I had in Villiers; 2nd of General Belliard's studs, which I bought from him two years ago, all composed of the pure Arab breed, 3rd of horses purchased in Vienna from Prince Coloredo and Schwartzenberg, from a Limousin stallion and Norman and Transylvanian stallions, for coaches, sent from France six months ago, 4th of four whole horses from the last campaign, only two came from Mecklenburg, one was given to me by General Gérard, the other by the colonel of the 5th regiment of cuirassiers; the others came from Poland. All the mares came from France. There is the exact truth.
As for the two horses about which Your Majesty spoke to me and which had forced the King of Spain to make his entry with six, Your Majesty has again been misled. After returning home last night, I obtained information from which it follows that the two horses taken had never belonged to the royal family of Spain, that they were in the stables of the Prince of Peace [Godoy], to whom they belonged.
Moreover, the person charged with conducting my equipages was written to this morning, to give them over to those of the King of Spain when they meet. So, Sire, it was very wrong to say that my studfarms were composed of horses from Mecklenburg and that I had taken horses from the stables of the King of Spain. I swear to Your Majesty that I did not believe myself doing something indelicate, by ordering the departure of horses whose ownership all my Duchy recognizes, I would have left them, if I had not been vaguely informed that Your Majesty disposed of my Duchy in favor of another, but I had to hold very dear to an establishment which I had sought to create with so much care and sacrifice. I pray Your Majesty, if he deigns to read my letter, to excuse these details that I believed it indispensable to give him in order to prove to him that I am incapable of doing what he accused me of yesterday evening, with so much anger, and despite the state I am still in.
I have asked Caroline to offer my excuses for not coming this morning to add my wishes to those of all your subjects, but I am not able to, first because my uniforms have gone and I have only that of the carabiniers which I wore yesterday evening, and then because it is not by words that I seek to prove to Your Majesty my attachment, it dates from the first favor you bestowed on me, the day you named me your aide-de-camp, it has never waned since that time and it will be the same until my last breath, whatever the result of the lies of my enemies.

"März was bred in Ljubičevo Studfarm in Kingdom of Yugoslavia (today Serbia, near Požarevac). He was trained by Seunig in Ljubljana, today Slovenia. When war broke out in 1941, Seunig volunteered into German cavalry and moved to Germany for his service. He took his horses with him to Großenhain, where he served at the school for young horses (Remonteschule). At the end of the war, to protect him from being sold, März was moved to the Cavalry Tournament Squadron (Turnierpferdeschwadron) at the Cavalry School in Krampnitz. These best horses were then moved to Holstein to the stable of Mr. von Tiedemann. There, they were taken by the English, who generously gave them to the Polish. März ended up in Janow Podlasky as breeding stallion, which was huge relief for Seunig, who suffered from this loss a great deal. He says in his biography that no money could pay off for this loss. Most likely, considering the circumstances in those days, he didn't keep his german name... it is also not known to me, under which name he was born at Ljubičevo. Source of the above info is Waldemar Seunig in his books. It would have been a great find to discover what happened to this amazing Arabian in Poland" - Sandi Vodnik.
This horse also competed in dressage at the 1924 Olympics for Yugoslavia.
