******
Bastien dragged Riley and Lindsey to Constantine, furious with the chairman for this inconsiderate decision.
“Constantine- What the fuck? You knew about Riley’s marriage and then you bring him here!”
“Bastien, please don’t swear at me. This is good. Riley and Xavier can work together not only professionally, but they can save their marriage. Excuse me, myself and Regina have to mingle.” Regina looked at the three people stood in front of her with sorrow in her eyes. Bastien thought back to the time that he convinced Constantine to employ Riley.
Constantine was in his study, a scotch in his hand. There was hardly any interest in the new physio position. Bastien entered the room, feeling guilty that he left the club in the shit.
“Sir, have you found someone to replace me yet?”
“Not as yet. The few applicants haven’t got the experience required for this role.”
“I may have someone suitable for the role. She’s my goddaughter. She is the physio for a premier league team in the UK. She’s erm. She’s looking for a change.”
“Why would she want to leave such a good job?”
“Well. She’s married to the clubs striker- but they are calling time on their marriage.”
“Oh. Why is that?”
“The press perceive him differently to what he actually is. He has been unfaithful, hurt her in many ways. But she’s a good physio, she’s determined. I can stay and support her until she gets used to the role, if you’ll give her a chance.”
“Isn’t that the typical stereotype of a footballer though Bastien- being unfaithful? I don’t condone it, but they all do it. Tell her to send me a covering letter and CV.”
“I will do. You won’t regret it. She just needs a new start and a chance.”
“If I give her this chance, we will look after her, make her feel welcome. Support her. You have my word Bastien. You don’t know anyone looking for a managers job by any chance do you?”
“No Sir. But I think Bertrand will be a successful permanent manager.”
“Yes, I do believe that myself.”
******
“Uncle Bastien, just leave it. It’ll be fine. I’m not saving my marriage. I’m going to get my divorce one way or another. And if that means work with him for the rest of the season, I’ll have to do it. You know what he’s like- he will probably be in the press sooner or later for something negative.”
“How can you be so calm about this? I’m due to be going back home in a few days. You’ve been well and truly stitched up, Ri. I don’t know what his intentions are with him bringing him here. But you’re putting yourself in danger!”
“Linz. It’ll be fine. Just trust me. Bast I might need your help at some point though.”
Bastien and Lindsey looked at each other concerned, but Riley’s smirk had them questioning what she was planning. Returning to their table, everyone remained silent- not knowing what to say.
Riley sat next to Drake, attempting to hold his hand - brushing her hand away he held his head in his hands.
“What’s up Drake?”
“Oh I don’t know Riley. Maybe the fact that your husband is here.”
“No shit Sherlock! Why won’t you hold my hand?”
“Because he’s here.”
“Oh but you can kiss me and fuck me when your girlfriend was here!”
“Riley I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I’m going home.”
Riley stood up, concealing the tears that were forming in her eyes. Bastien and Lindsey followed- Lindsey apologising to Leo, suggesting that he stayed at home or with Liam. Her sister needed her. Drake stood up abruptly to follow them before Leo advised him to stay put.
****
Finding Riley outside smoking, Bastien knew she wasn’t calm or strong as she made herself out to be. Pulling her in for a hug, he couldn’t breathe with the smoke surrounding them.
“Both of you are coming home with me tonight. I’m not taking any risks.”
Riley wasn’t sure. Since she had been in Cordonia she seemed to have ‘sofa surfed’ rather than stay at her own apartment. Arriving at Bastien’s house, the girls wondered why a single man would need such a big house.
“You girls came here when you were both younger- you probably won’t remember. You’ve both got a room each.”
Walking into the kitchen, they smelt coffee and an aroma consisting of food from New York.
“Hi girls, Bastien informed me of what had happened. Are you okay Riley? I hope you don’t mind- I thought you’d appreciate it.”
Riley and Lindsey tucked in to the food that Bianca had provided them all. Both smiling having the reminder of home, they both forgot about that drama for a bit.
“Thank you Mrs Walker, I’m fine. Arsehole men for you.”
“Not all men are arseholes Riley.” Lindsey stated, she was missing Leo already. She knew he was married but she couldn’t help fall for him even with her sister warning her not to fall for a footballer.
“The ones I seem to choose are. Excuse me. I’m going to go to sleep. Night everyone.”
Bastien explained how Drake was cold towards Riley, he believed that was bothering her more than the fact that her estranged husband had unexpectedly turned up. The three of them agreed to contact Drake to come over.
*****
Drake arrived shortly after, receiving a stern expression from his Mom and Bastien. Lindsey poured him a whiskey knowing that his Mom was going to berate him after Bastien explained the events that had occurred.
Bianca berated him explaining to not mess with Riley’s feelings and that she would need him more now than ever.
“Mom, I’m not messing her about. I just thought she might want to give her marriage another shot now he was here in person.” Lindsey spat the drink out, laughing uncontrollably, Bastien shook his head in disbelief that Drake would even think that.
“I know we’ve only just met, but the first night I kissed her- she made me weak at my knees. I’ve never felt like that before. It made me realise that Kiara wasn’t the one.”
“Damn right she wasn’t the one. She hurt you Drake! Every type of abuse. You don’t deserve that. You deserve to be happy, so does Riley.”
“What do you mean ‘every type of abuse’?” Lindsey’s eyes widened, wondering how much alcohol she had consumed - assuming she misunderstood Bianca.
“Kiara, she Erm. She was unfaithful... she did things to me that I don’t really want to talk about it, Lindsey.”
“You two are like peas in a pod. Xavier made my sisters life hell. He was unfaithful, he abused her, he made her miscarry my nephew. You both need each other.” Lindsey slurred, regretting what she said the moment it slipped out of her mouth.
“He did what?” Bianca said in astonishment.
“Too far Lindsey! She doesn’t want people knowing that!” Drake thought about his words from his sister a few days ago, and linked them to what Lindsey had just said. His heart sunk at the thought of Riley confiding in Savannah.
“Savannah... she... when me and Riley slept together, Sav had spoken to Riley and later told me that she knew more about Riley’s past and to not hurt her. Why would she confide in Savannah? I need to see her, which room is she in Bast?”
*****
Knocking on the door quietly, he wasn’t sure what to expect- would she still be angry? Would she have finally calmed down? Drake knew he was in the wrong.
“Bast, I’m fine. Please just leave me alone.”
Opening the door, Drake saw that she had been crying. She looked so defeated which broke his heart, especially after finding out about her past due to Lindsey’s slip of the tongue.
“Can I come in?”
“Sure. I thought you was Bastien.”
Sitting on the edge of the bed, he wanted to keep a distance in case she decided to throttle him.
“Ri. I’m sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?”
“When I realised that it was him. My brain froze. I just thought because he was here in person, you may want to save your marriage.”
“Drake- trust me. I’d rather be dead than save that marriage. I was young and naive when I met him. Biggest mistake of my life. At times I just wished I had stayed in the states. He was a different man when I first met him. A charmer. I felt safe. I thought somebody actually liked and loved me....”
*****
Riley was studying Sports Rehabilitation degree at the University of Salford. She had moved to the UK from New York after her parents tragically died- needing a fresh start.
One Friday night, her room mates arranged to go out to celebrate finishing their second year. Riley was intending on returning to New York to spend time with her older sister- so intended to make this a night to remember.
Entering the club, it was full of students. Walking near the VIP area, there was a crowd of screaming women. Riley and her friends rolled her eyes back, their mouths were dry and needed to get to the bar. Eventually pushing their way through the crowd- they ordered champagne. Go big or go home. Standing up to go to the toilet Riley accidentally elbowed a man in a suit.
“I’m so sorry!” Riley stood frozen. She knew who he was but needed to not act starstruck.
“Don’t worry Miss.” Riley softly smiled at him, trying to avoid the man everyone had a crush on.
“Enjoy your night.”
“Wait! Do you want a drink?”
“No, thank you.”
“Please. I’d be honoured if you joined me for a drink.”
“I’ll join you for a drink if it’ll make you happy after I’ve been to the toilet.”
“Fabulous. Come to the VIP area afterwards.”
It’s just a drink. He just wants a drink. Accept the gesture, then leave. He’s the captain of Manchester City- what would he see in a poor student?
Checking her hair and topping up her lipstick, she decided to make her way to her friends- hoping to try and avoid the VIP area.
“What took you so long?”
“Oh... there... there was a queue. You know what women are like. I was honestly tempted to just go in the men’s toilets.”
Xavier gestured her into the VIP area, all the men smiled at her. But none was admiring her like he was.
“What’s your name? I assume you’re not from around here.” Winking at her, she laughed at his poor flirting skills.
“My names Riley. You assume correct. I’m from New York. I’m actually here studying Sports rehabilitation. Ive just finished my second year. We’re all celebrating.”
“Nice to meet you Riley. I’m Xavier. Oh you are? You could work with us when you qualify.”
“I’m actually going back to the States when i qualify.”
“That’s a shame. You’re beautiful you know that?”
Riley and Xavier spoke for the remainder of the night. Both getting to know each other. He was charming towards her, her heart fluttered everytime he spoke or held her hand.
“Thank you for the drinks. I should really get going.”
“Thank you for the company. You’ve really made my night.”
Riley felt herself blushing- hoping he wouldn’t see due to the dark lighting. As she was about to leave he pulled her into his embrace before cupping her cheeks. Fixating his eyes on her baby blues- he lent forward. As his lips touched hers, she closed her eyes- wondering if she was dreaming. Breaking the kiss, his eyes contained need and desire.
“Do you need an escort home? I don’t want this night to end. I want to get to know you. Do you believe in love at first sight?”
*****
Riley finished explaining how she met Xavier- she didn’t want to talk about her love life in front of Drake. It just slipped out.
“If he stayed like that. The man I fell in love with. We would probably still be happily married. Funny how life chances isn’t it.”
Drake fully understood how she felt, Kiara wasn’t the women he had once fallen in love with. He wanted to inform her what Lindsey had said downstairs- but didn’t want her to think they were all gossiping.
“Not all marriages last until you are 80 odd Ri. I mean look at Leo. Finally he’s divorcing Maddy- and that’s because Lindsey came into his life. He’s known her all of a few days and she’s changed his life.”
“He does know that Linz is going back to New York in a few days right? And I’ll probably be joining her.” Drakes felt as if he had been stabbed through the heart. She was giving up.
“You can’t leave. Neither of you.”
“Lindsey has a job. She has a house there- our parents house. I’m sure Uncle Bastien could cover me for a few matches. Nine months, I will have to work with him. Nine fucking months Drake. That’s nearly a year. I can’t even move on with my life because he’s not signed the papers yet. I can’t be free from him. I don’t give a shit about money or whatever I’m entitled to. I can’t even get married ever again if I wanted to. I can’t start a family, without him being a burden. I’m 24 on Saturday- what 24 year old gets married and potentially divorced at that age? I’m really living the life of Riley.”
She laughed sarcastically before pulling her knees up to her chest, she couldn’t conceal her true feelings and strong attitude anymore. Drake reached out for her hand, slowly rubbing his thumb over her knuckles- she fixated her gaze on him, smiling for the first time since he arrived.
“We all make mistakes, it doesn’t mean that you have to stop living. You’re young Ri, you have a fantastic future ahead of you wherever that will be. And it’s your birthday?”
“So do you, you’re amazing. Have you rest your ankle by the way?”
“Sort of- don’t worry I’ve been following your advise ma’am. The pain from my ankle is nothing compared to the pain you’re going through. If I could take it away I would. Don’t avoid the question about your birthday.”
“I’ll be checking your ankle, Walker. We need you back on the pitch as soon as possible. I’m not avoiding it, when you get past 21 a birthday is just another day reminding you that you’re a year older.”
Drake stood up, and slid into bed next to Riley- putting his arm around her. Turning her head towards him she smiled, before nestling her head onto him.
“Riley... Lindsey said some things downstairs before I came up to see you.”
“What?”
“She explained how he hurt you. If you ever want to talk about it- I’m here for you. Always. I lo-like you a lot. You’re the first thing on my mind when I wake up and the last thing I think about when I fall asleep. I will protect you.”
Riley shot out of bed, furious - wondering how much Lindsey had told him. Running downstairs, she hoped her sister was there. Drake followed her downstairs regretting what he had said.
“Linz! How could you!”
“What? This thing between you isn’t some fling. I’ve seen how you both look at other. It’s adorable. If you are both going to move on from your fucked up relationships you both need to talk about it - open up to each other. The only difference between the two of you was that you was pregnant. Everything else was the same.”
“Hardly the same! Kiara only cheated on him.”
The room went silent, Lindsey realised that Riley didn’t know the full truth about Kiara. Realisation hit Riley like a ton of bricks after witnessing everyone’s expressions fade. Turning to Drake, she had sorrow in her eyes.
“That night you split up with her... that wasn’t the first time she’s hurt you was it?”
“No.” Drake bit his lip- feeling embarrassed, with a lack of masculinity. Riley hugged him tightly, his arms went around her tiny frame. Staying in that position, they both held other lovingly. Bastien, Lindsey and Bianca gave each other a knowing look- the look suggested to leave the two alone to talk.
“Oh is it that time already? It’s a bit late. I think it’s time we all went to sleep.” Bianca suggested.

Mark Cain, Wittgenstein’s Significance, Philosophy Now (2001)
April 29th was the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein is one the few genuinely famous 20th century philosophers. He has been the subject of a prize-winning biography (Ray Monk’s excellent Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius), several TV and radio documentaries, and a Derek Jarman feature film and his name is frequently dropped by those who want to emphasise their intellectual credentials. And he is probably unique amongst philosophers in provoking the ridicule of Rupert Murdoch’s henchmen as, in response to speculation about his mental health, he featured in a Sun editorial comment entitled ‘Loopy Ludwig’ in 1991.
This prominence might suggest that Wittgenstein’s status as a significant philosopher is assured. However, this is far from being the case. For, during the period in which Wittgenstein’s fame within the public arena has escalated, his influence within academic philosophy has sharply declined. This raises a fascinating question: does Wittgenstein’s significance reside solely in the details of his life and personality or is his philosophical output of sufficient quality to merit the continued attention of philosophers?
Wittgenstein was born in 1889 into one of the wealthiest families in the Austro-Hungarian empire. His father was a major figure in the Austrian iron and steel industry and headed a family at the centre of Viennese artistic and cultural life. The young Wittgenstein had an undistinguished school career (he attended the equivalent of a secondary modern school in Linz; Adolf Hitler was one of his fellow pupils) and after attending technical college in Berlin he came to England registering as a research student in aeronautics at the University of Manchester in 1908. At Manchester he developed an interest in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. As a result of this interest, he went to Cambridge to study with Bertrand Russell in 1912, beginning a lifelong association with that University. Here he discovered his true vocation and quickly convinced Russell of his philosophical brilliance. In his autobiography Russell described Wittgenstein as “perhaps the most perfect example I have ever known of genius as traditionally conceived, passionate, profound, intense and dominating.”
Over the years Wittgenstein was to form many important friendships at Cambridge and gained much intellectual sustenance from discussions with his fellow academics. However, his feelings towards Cambridge were always ambivalent as he loathed the self-satisfaction and superficial cleverness that he saw as being endemic there. Accordingly he spent many periods – some amounting to several years – away from Cambridge.
With the outbreak of World War One Wittgenstein enlisted in the Austrian army, fought at the front and was decorated for bravery. Nevertheless, he was able to continue his philosophical work throughout the war and completed the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, his first major work, while imprisoned in an Italian P.O.W. camp. After the publication of the Tractatus, Wittgenstein abandoned philosophy, believing himself to have solved all the major problems of the subject. When his father died he inherited a fortune which, in keeping with the ascetic tendencies he had developed during the war, he gave away to his siblings, thereby placing himself in difficult economic circumstances for many years to come. Throughout the 1920s Wittgenstein pursued a troubled career as an elementary schoolteacher in rural Austria, worked as a gardener, and played an important role in the design and construction of a house for one of his sisters.
Much to the relief of his family, who feared that he wasting his prodigious talents, Wittgenstein began discussions with members of the Vienna Circle of Logical Positivists in the late 1920s and came to see that he had not, after all, solved all of the problems of philosophy. So, in 1929 he returned to Cambridge to resume his philosophical career. After teaching for several years he was appointed Professor of Philosophy in 1939 and, horrified by the absorption of Austria into Nazi Germany, became a British citizen. During World War Two, in order both to contribute to the war effort and escape Cambridge, he worked first as a porter in Guy’s Hospital and then as a laboratory assistant in a research project into wound shock based in Newcastle. In 1947 he finally resigned his chair and led a nomadic existence for the last few years of his life, taking in spells in Ireland, Norway, the US, Vienna and Oxford. He was plagued by ill-health throughout this period and was diagnosed as having prostate cancer in 1949. He died in the home of his doctor in Cambridge on April 29 1951, shortly after his 62nd birthday.
The Tractatus was the only philosophical book that Wittgenstein published in his own lifetime. However, he left a body of work amounting to some 20,000 pages in the form of handwritten notebooks and typescripts. The many books published under his name since the early 1950s consist of material selected from this corpus by his literary executors, the most important being the Philosophical Investigations.
That a man of Wittgenstein’s background and ability led such a difficult and unsettled life is indicative of his complex and troubled personality. He was prone to introspection and self-castigation and throughout his adult life experienced suicidal impulses and bouts of depression and at times feared for his own sanity. Being something of a loner he often sought complete solitude yet was a magnetic personality who formed many friendships and evoked awe in virtually all who met him. He was a compelling teacher who had a profound influence on many of his students, both on the philosophical outlook of those who became philosophers and on the life choices of those who did not. But he could be a difficult, demanding and overbearing friend and several major Cambridge figures, though admiring of his intellect and integrity, eventually broke off their friendships with him or sought to keep him at arm’s length.
It has frequently been claimed that Wittgenstein was gay and that he fell in love on several occasions (usually with young men who combined intelligence with innocence and gentleness). However, it is probable that his sexual life was very limited as he believed that sex, and physical proximity in general, only serve to undermine true love.
In short, Wittgenstein was the archetypal tortured genius and this goes a long way towards explaining the appeal which has served to generate and sustain his fame. Yet the importance of the highly distinctive form of his writing should not be overlooked for, unlike most philosophers, he was a brilliant literary stylist. To anyone other than the expert the Tractatus is nigh-on impenetrable as it consists of highly compressed and mysterious remarks of which the opening “The world is all that is the case” and the closing “Whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must be silent” are typical. Yet the book has an austere beauty that is highly visible. His later writings are, at least superficially, much less daunting as they are written in an expansive and almost colloquial style and are replete with striking metaphors and similes. However, to the uninitiated it can be difficult to understand the point and direction of these writings, as Wittgenstein provides little by way of overt structure. But for many of his readers this has proved irrelevant, as the poetic quality of his sentences make them compelling even when their content is obscure.
Although the Tractatus is of great historical importance, it is fair to say that Wittgenstein’s standing as a philosopher mainly rests upon his later work, much of which focuses upon a closely-related battery of issues to do with language, mind and mathematics. It had a huge influence on philosophy in the middle decades of the 20th century, particularly in Britain. Throughout his later period Wittgenstein championed a revolutionary conception of the nature of philosophy and the way in which the philosopher should proceed. He rejected the traditional idea that the task of the philosopher is to solve philosophical problems by means of the construction of theories that present facts that were hitherto hidden or unknown. Hence, philosophy is to be sharply contrasted with science. Rather, the philosopher’s concern should be to describe our concepts and the relationships between them and so make explicit something that we all know (yet tend to lose sight of when we philosophise). For Wittgenstein, grasping concepts involves mastering the use of words and sentences. Consequently, carrying out the conceptual investigation that he recommends involves focusing on the manner in which we use the words and sentences of our language.
Wittgenstein thought that human beings have an irresistible urge to philosophise but when we give in to this urge we often lose sight of the nature of familiar concepts and so fall into error and confusion. Sometimes we set ourselves problems that are spurious. The ‘problem of other minds’ is one example, as our psychological concepts and the concept of knowledge are such that it is nonsense to fear that we can never know what another person thinks or feels. And sometimes we are seduced by tempting pictures to make claims that are conceptually confused. Two such pictures are central targets of Wittgenstein’s reflections. The first is a picture of language according to which words name objects (the meaning of a word being the object that it names) and sentences are combinations of such names that serve to describe possible facts or states of affairs. In order to break the grip of this picture, he presented a battery of examples of language in use, some involving the use of imaginary simple languages. For example, in the opening section of the Philosophical Investigations Wittgenstein describes a case where someone enters a shop and presents the shopkeeper with a slip of paper marked ‘five red apples’. The shopkeeper responds in the following manner. He opens a drawer marked ‘apples’. Then he consults a colour chart to find the colour sample opposite the word ‘red’. As he says the series of cardinal numbers up to ‘five’ he takes an apple out of the drawer that matches the colour sample for each number. Such examples are designed to establish that we use words and sentences in many different ways and that such usage is intimately bound up with non-linguistic activities that constitute our distinctive human form of life. The second pernicious picture that Wittgenstein went to great pains to undermine is that of the mind as being an inner theatre and mental phenomena (such as thoughts, intentions, states of understanding, and sensations) as residing inside this theatre and lying hidden behind our publicly accessible behaviour. It was in this context that he developed his famous argument against the possibility of a private language (a language that, in principle, can be understood only by a single person).
Wittgenstein held that philosophy as he conceived it has great value, even though it doesn’t generate theories or new knowledge. For it can help reveal spurious problems as such (thus dissolving them) and break the grip of dangerous pictures and so help us to avoid error and confusion. For this reason Wittgenstein described his philosophy as a kind of therapy and wrote that its purpose was to “show the fly the way out of the fly-bottle.”
In the English-speaking philosophical world Wittgenstein’s influence has declined markedly in recent years and he is in danger of becoming a marginal figure. This is in no small part due to the shift in the centre of gravity in the philosophical world from Britain to the United States and the influence of WVO Quine who argued that there is no sharp dividing line between philosophy and science.
Does this decline of influence mean that Wittgenstein’s writings are no longer of any relevance or importance and should be consigned to the dustbin of intellectual history? I don’t think so. His work constitutes a coherent challenge to much contemporary philosophical output, particularly in the philosophy of mind, arguably the most prominent area of the discipline. Views of the mind and mental phenomena that Wittgenstein attempted to undermine are still widespread and the idea that philosophical reflection on the mind is continuous with the scientific study of mental phenomena is dominant. Moreover, his challenge equally applies to much scientific work on the mind, for example, Noam Chomsky’s theories on language and language acquisition. So, if Wittgenstein’s position is tenable then it has hugely significant ramifications. Yet despite all this, Wittgenstein’s challenge has never been adequately addressed. His opponents, faced with his subtle and abstruse writings, have been far too quick to characterise him as holding crude and discredited views (such as behaviourism) that he probably didn’t hold and they dismiss him accordingly. In short, his views have not had a fair hearing.
It is far from clear whether Wittgenstein should be regarded as one of the greats. But one thing that is clear is this. Until his ideas have been successfully engaged with and defeated, Wittgenstein will continue to be a haunting figure who threatens to undermine the very coherence of many views widely held by philosophers and scientists today.

The Beginning: September 5, 2018
It’s official I am in Austria. I landed at 2:14 pm Austrian time. I was greeted at the airport by my host family and friends. I then made my way to my new home where I had a wonderful lunch, we relaxed before heading into the city. My host parents brought me to Linz ( a province within Austria) and showed me so many beautiful things. I felt so welcomed and cared for. We then went for dinner and walked around the square. On our way home we stopped to look over the lake that was illuminated by all the building lights. It was a beautiful view. We returned home and went to bed as it was to be an early morning the next day. The next morning we woke up had a great breakfast then packed up and headed for their lake house in Weinsberg forest Martinsberg, Austria. We spend the day swimming in the lake and relaxing in the Meadows. The views were breathtaking. After one more swim in the lake, we headed into town to pick up food for the next day. Once we got everything we needed we went out for dinner at a local poppy restaurant. For dinner, I had my first poppy schnitzel in Austria as well as poppy ice cream.!!! It was so delicious. We were then given a tour by the owner who gave me a sample of Poppy torte and a lotion made out of Poppy‘s. We then headed back to the house where we took a small detour to view the sunset from the edge of the pier. We returned to the house walked around the lake and watched as the sun crossed the Waterline. Finally, we sat on the deck surrounded by candlelight where we talked about our plans for the next day. We then said our good nights and everyone went to bed for the night. It’s hard to believe that I’m finally here !!! 😀 It feels like it is only been a few days ago when I first applied to become a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. Now sitting here in my new room in a completely different country is unbelievable. I don’t think I could say THANK YOU enough times to everyone who has had an impact on my exchange. But I truly thank you All. The best part of this exchange is all the people you get to meet and interact with. Thankfully throughout my selection process, I was able to meet many youth exchange students who have helped me prepare for my journey of a lifetime. Even though our time together was short I hope that I can help upcoming exchange students with the same positive and outgoing personalities you all had. Now that my year has begun I cannot wait to see what else Austria has to offer me.

Hello!
Here’s our weekly wrap up from the WRFB crew =)
Sam’s Updates
I had such a weird week. I was so tired from work, and after the NEWTs, I wasn’t really feeling reading as much. I’m also emotionally exhausted by Darkdawn.
What I read this week:
Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff: I am destroyed by the end of this. While we knew the ending, it was still unexpectedly heartbreaking and beautiful.
What I’m currently reading:
Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte: Listening to this on audio. I feel like this was allll over BookNet for a while. I’m enjoying it so far but we’ll see.
Only Human by Sylvain Neuvel: This is the third book in the Themis Files. I was talking about this with Parker this week, while I LOVED book 1, and book 2 was alright, this one has shifted tone drastically. It’s not bad, just not what I want it to be.
Linz’s Updates
Work wasn’t even that bad this week, but we saw my parents off to Ireland — it’s my mom’s first trip abroad and she isn’t QUITE over her fear of flying so I’m still exhausted from that sendoff. Also, had to do all my meal prep and errands a day early so I could brunch. Adulting is terrible.
What Linz read
Wilder Girls by Rory Power: Minda reviewed it last month, but quick summary – an illness hits an all girls’ boarding school, and the school’s under quarantine while the government searches for a cure. When one student goes missing, her best friend Hetty will do anything to find out what happened to her–and finds out way more. VISCERAL descriptions, creepy world building, there were some things that left me a bit wanting but the overall writing was great.
The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates: Coates’ first novel explores the life of a slave in Virginia. It’s epic and sweeping and gorgeous and I’ll write a review.
What Linz DNF
The Paper Magician by Charlie Holmberg: Eh. Ceony is a magic student is apprenticed to the magician Thane, whose specialty is Paper. She’s pissy because she thinks it’s a weak art, but starts to fall in love with Paper and duh starts crushing on Thane. 30% of the way through, Thane’s heart is literally stolen by a bad guy and Ceony decides to go get the heart and prevent Thane from dying. Just…eh. It’s weirdly paced, the world building wasn’t there for me, and Ceony kinda sucks.
What Linz is currently reading
Tumblr media
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone: THIS IS SO WEIRD I LOVE IT
Ginny’s Updates:
Whatsup All! I’ve had a ridiculously fun week, and this next week is gonna be great cause I have some amazing friends! I was tailgating this weekend and I forgot how much I loved hanging out with my tailgating family, but unsurprisingly I read maybe 20 pages? Luckily the rest of my week had a little time.
Currently Reading:
Half Off Ragnarock by Seanan McGuire: The third book in the InCryptid series (for which I have reviews) switches focus to Verity’s brother Alex. So far, one of his coworkers at the zoo has been murdered by being turned to stone and Alex is desperately trying to solve the murder. Gonna be a fun ride.
Trouble in Lafayette Square by Gil Klein: Gil was actually a professor of mine, as well as a family friend. When his book finally got published I made sure to buy a copy though it took me a while to get around to it. This book focuses on the history that happened in Lafayette Square. For those who don’t know, Lafayette Square is the public park right near the White House. It was the home of a number of early Senators, Vice Presidents, and other influential historical figures. So far the book details a murder, a few affairs, and an attempted murder. Pretty fun stuff.
My Best Friends Mardi Gras Wedding by Erin Nicholas: I have a mini-group with a few of my friends where we find free books on Amazon and boy do we have fun with them. So far this book has covered some “not like other girl”-itis, the main character clearly being in love with her best friend, some of the worst flirting I’ve ever seen and Im like 15% in. Gonna be fun to review.
Finished:
Acting on Impulse by Mia Sosa: He’s an actor, she’s a personal trainer. They meet in Aruba and when she finds out he’s an actor she bolts. Plot happens and she ends up being his personal trainer and then they fall in love. There end up being a few parts of this I wasn’t thrilled about i.e. if someone is working for you DON’T FUCKING PUT THEM IN A WEIRD PLACE. They are your employee, stop pursuing them, full stop! I received an arc of one of the later books and thought it could be cute to start from the beginning but I don’t think I’m going to continue with the series. 2/5
No Judgements by Meg Cabot: I also received an arc of this for free. Bree is running away from some irritating people and ended up in cute sea-town where she meets been-there-forever-local Drew is who hot like burning. There’s a hurricane coming and far too many hints that something terrible would happen (untrue). That was a little irritating, but overall the book was pretty cute. I liked the characters on the island but thought the buildup to the hurricane was a little overblown for how things were after the fact. 3.5/5
Stripped  by Zoey Castile: Robyn is in a rut, in a job she doesn’t like and feeling like she’s losing herself, until she meets her neighbor who turns out to be a male stripper. There are sparks and they decide to date knowing it will have to end at the end of the summer. There’s a decent amount of drama as Robyn ends up bringing Zac to her best friends wedding. There’s a subplot about a shitty school principal and then way too easy a wrap up, but otherwise had some fun moments. 3/5
City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett: The third book in the trilogy, this book finally focuses on Sigrud. I’m planning on writing a review of this so I’ll just give basic background. It’s 17 years after the first book, and Sigrud hasn’t appeared to age while his friends all seem withered. A close friend is murdered and Sigrud takes it upon himself to go and try to save their daughter.
Minda’s Updates
What Minda finished this week:
Tumblr media
Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman – Done! Glad I picked this back up. Stay tuned for review.
What Minda is reading now:
Tumblr media
On Swift Horses by Shannon Pufahl – I got this one at ALA! Out in November, so figured I’d get a head start.
Weekly Wrap Up: September 9 – 15, 2019 Hello! Here’s our weekly wrap up from the WRFB crew =) Sam's Updates I had such a weird week.
