Even though the Southern California heat does not cool down, it is starting to feel like the Fall season in my mind. I think it shows in these longer newsletters that I love to write. Interview: "Stop Taking Sides" with Adam Mabry

Earlier this week I went LIVE on Instagram to interview author and Pastor Adam Mabry about his book "Stop Taking Sides." It was an encouraging conversation and I'm thankful for the opportunity. We talked about his book, his writing process, and publishing with The Good Book Company. He also gave some tips to writers. You can watch our interview on IGTV or listen on Spotify and Podcasts.

I have been interviewing my pastors and members at my church with my Walnut Commentary, Walnut Notes, and Unikoi Questions podcasts. It is a joy to serve our congregation in this way. Starting at SOLA Network and growing Dive In Dig Deep has allowed me to interview a wider group of people. On my website, I made a working list of the interviews I've conducted. I hope to get to do a few more before the end of the year.

Instagram Turns 10

Instagram turned 10 this week. As hidden features, they brought back the classic icons and added a private map and archive of your stories from the past three years. To access the icons, click on your profile icon on the bottom right corner, click the hamburger menu on the top right corner, click on the settings menu, and do a long swipe up. For the private map, click on your profile icon on the bottom right corner, click the hamburger menu on the top right corner, click on the settings menu, and click on the archive.

Instagram is, probably, the app that I spend the most time on. While it's afforded me a lot of fun, I know we can't deny that it is still dangerous. In a recent newsletter, tech writer Casey Newton spoke with Bloomberg’s Sarah Frier. He asked: "Of all the changes made to Instagram since then, which do you think has had the biggest consequences?" She answered: "The crucial change was the addition of stories. We usually think about it in terms of its significance from a competitive standpoint — like Instagram vs. Snapchat. I think it's actually more significant from the standpoint of Instagram recognizing that the immense pressure that people have to perform on Instagram, and portray their lives a certain way, is actually bad for growth. The anxiety that goes into deciding whether something is Instagrammable actually made people post less. Since they introduced stories, they’ve taken away some of that pressure. That’s what really brought them down their path to a billion users, and the ensuing conflicts with Facebook over whether they would cannibalize Facebook's success."

Even though Frier states that stories has taken away some pressure, I think there is still a performative aspect to sharing stories. We're crafting our image, creating our persona, and it doesn't always align with reality. And the dangers are more than what we create. It also includes what we consume. We can get jealous, greedy, assume the worst, and judge others. There's also the dangers of pornography and lust, emotional attachment and sliding into DMs for inappropriate relationships.

I have two points to make after sharing on this. First, I hope to reawaken us to the reality of the platforms that we use. To think of them in a sober way and to stay safe. Second, I want to remind us that our true selves aren't always reflected in what we share. I hope to show a better glimpse of my heart here in this newsletter, and I'll do my best to keep it real.

Godly Wisdom

I made another short sermon excerpt video for my home church, FCBC Walnut. I trimmed a clip from our youth pastor Kevin, grabbed a photo, added some effects, and made some music. Jess and I are having fun watching "Halloween" movies that aren't really Halloween movies. We watched A Bug's Life (because bugs are creepy) Monsters Inc (because monsters), Monsters University (because monsters again), and Beauty and the Beast (because of Beast). 1991's Beauty and the Beast is a classic, and rightfully so - the animation is beautiful and the songs are made for Broadway. It holds a special place in Disney history, and you can read about it on Wikipedia and watch the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty on Disney+ for your own insight and entertainment.

The podcast that impacted me the most this week was the Ask Pastor John episode: Why Do I Need to Read the Bible When We Have Bible Teachers Online? Today more than ever, Christians have access to a wealth of faithful Bible teaching online. So, why do we need to read the Bible for ourselves? Here is my takeaway quote: "Perhaps at the bottom of the problem is that our friend has so completely intellectualized his faith that the only category in which he thinks, the only category that’s going to profit him, he thinks, is the category of verbal explanation. There are a lot of people who think about sermons that way. They just think, “I need to know; I need some more information, some more explanation,” rather than also the heartfelt exultation that a lover has in reading the very words of his beloved."

Book Review: ESV Expository Commentary: Romans–Galatians

With the start of the Fall season, it’s good to get into some serious study of the Bible. The ESV Expository Commentary: Romans–Galatians was the commentary I needed to help me see God’s Word clearly with fresh eyes.

The ESV Expository Commentary is designed to help the church understand and apply the overarching storyline of the Bible. It aims to be broadly accessible, theologically enriching, and pastorally wise. This entry covering Romans-Galatians is exceptional. Iain M. Duguid, James M. Hamilton Jr., and Jay Sklar are the series editors, and this edition has contributions from Robert W. Yarbrough, Andy Naselli, Dane C. Ortlund, and Frank Thielman.

Robert W. Yarbrough: Romans

Romans commentary is provided by Robert W. Yarbrough. He shows us how the book is wide-ranging with a theological thrust. It is a theological/doctrinal letter, missionary letter, pastoral letter, situational letter, and political-functioning letter. Because the book of Romans can be quite intimidating and easy to get lost in, Yarbrough notes that Paul’s focus in Romans can be glimpsed in the frequency of the words he uses. God, law, Christ, sin, and Lord are the top 5 words.

Romans connects the OT with the NT, and Yarbrough helps us see how Paul does it. Interestingly, Yarbrough gives four tips for maximum usability of Romans in an exposition covering the whole book: (1) Know the congregation, (2) Know the point, (3) Know the text, (4) Know the Lord. In regards to Romans 7, Yarbrough states that no Christian is so sanctified that he can honestly say that the statement “I do the very thing I hate” never describes him. So he presents a straightforward and convincing argument for the plausibility of Paul’s speaking here as a Christian.

Andrew David Naselli: 1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians commentary is by Andrew David Naselli. He describes the book in one sentence: The gospel requires God’s holy people to mature in purity and unity. This type of clarity is all throughout Naselli’s commentary.

The spiritual gifts in chapters 12-14 are presented as operating until Jesus returns. He clarifies that “tongues” in Acts 2 probably refers to xenoglossia (i.e., speaking in a human language the speaker does not know), while “tongues” in 1 Corinthians 14 probably refers to glossolalia (i.e., speaking in verbal patterns that humans cannot identify with any human language). Prophecy is an insight that God spontaneously reveals. Furthermore, those prophesying do not speak with absolute divine authority.

Dane Ortlund: 2 Corinthians

Dane Ortlund provides the commentary for 2 Corinthians, and he points out the theme of strength through weakness. Other themes include The Holy Spirit, reconciliation, and heaven. Having just read Ortlund’s Gentle and Lowly, it is clear that he is sensitive to the softer side of the Apostle Paul.

He notes that the tone changes seemingly abruptly at points in 2 Corinthians. For instance, transitioning from 7:1 to 7:2, the letter suddenly becomes intensely personal and autobiographical. Ortlund reminds us that Paul was hurt by the Corinthians, and Paul is still human. So the deep emotion that Paul felt is responsible for the seemingly changes in tone throughout the letter.

Frank Thielman: Galatians

Galatians ends this edition with commentary from Frank Thielman, and he highlights the themes of justification, the law, and the family of God. While the previous commentators thought about preachers, Thielman makes a memorable case for Galatians by reminding us of the dramatic backstory that comes along with the Apostle Paul. His conversion, defense of Gentile Christians, the loss of friendship with the Galatians, and the dangers of the false teachers should be at the forefront of our minds.

In regards to the law, Thielman summarizes Paul by stating that the law had a separate, temporary purpose that was qualitatively different from the purpose of the Abrahamic covenant. This type of nuance is carefully considered throughout the commentary.

Truths for your Heart

The book concludes in Galatians with a warning showing how the false teachers in Galatia were apparently well-connected leaders in the church. They distorted the gospel and sought to coerce those under their influence to turn away from its true form. It’s a sober warning for us, and a fitting example of how the truth contained in the Scriptures and explained by these commentaries must not merely exist in our minds. These truths must take hold of our hearts. This commentary is a great help for it to do just that.

Top Eternal Security Tips!

Salvation isn’t of works and therefore someone who is trusting in his works is not and won’t be saved. This life is similar to a proving ground. Eternal life by definition may not be temporary.

There are lots of believers who share his standpoint. To put it differently, an individual may not lose her or his salvation. Notice that it doesn’t say it’s not possible Bible eternal security to renew them again to salvation. To put it differently, it’s believed that salvation arrives to a person the second he is born again, not at the conclusion of a lengthy qualifying process. The salvation in Christ isn’t temporary, it’s eternal. There isn’t a sin that may unjustify a person who has been justified. Continuing sin isn’t covered by grace.

Most religions concentrate on the external actions, but Christ took the idea of sin and holiness to a far deeper level. That is the reason I consider the doctrine of eternal security to be this important. The fact remains, however, most of us live somewhere in between. Like anakainoo, it carries the feeling of renovation to another, instead of a younger, state. So we ought to have a sense of security.

The Number One Question You Must Ask for Eternal Security

Everyone who doesn’t think the gospel won’t be eternally secure. The Bible is overwhelmingly obvious this is just not correct. On the flip side, some Christians think that in the event that you don’t believe in eternal security, you’ve got to continue to keep your salvation by works. But Jesus explained no such thing. Furthermore, he says that no one shall snatch them out of his hand, which further emphasizes the idea that those who have eternal life will never perish. Peter was writing within this atmosphere. So at this point there’s no doubt Simon isn’t saved.

SoaI am not here in order to prove a point, yet to provide you hope. There’s an alternate view which lies between these 2 extremes. There are NO REFUNDS on this transaction. The target of this paper isn’t to deliver an exhaustive study on the subject of eternal security.

There’s no assurance without belief. There’s no security without belief. Fourthly, eternal security doesn’t signify that Christians find it impossible to disqualify themselves for positions of leadership and assistance. Eternal security is a real biblical doctrine. For starters, eternal security doesn’t indicate it does not make any difference if a Christian sins. Eternal security truly is a terrific promise of God.

Forgiveness is among the fantastic promises of the New Covenant. To begin with, gratitude is a strong motivator. This form of affirmation is incorrect. There’s only the very clear declaration they shall never perish. It can not be possible for all of us to earn a judgment as to whether a man is a backsliding Christian or an impostor.

Once an individual is saved, it’s not possible for them to lose their salvation. There’s nothing a man or woman can do that God cannot forgive. I’ve been taught that once someone is saved, he can’t be lost. If somebody doesn’t arrive back, you can’t know whether they’re a genuine Christian. If he is acting as if he or she is unsaved, then that is how we should regard them. Other folks say it is an indication of who you are. And his capacity to cast out demons cannot be attributed to Satan.

Eternal Security Fundamentals Explained

An analogy from the actual world could possibly be helpful. These extra references help support the position a genuine believer cannot lose their salvation.
