Mixing Pop Vocals

Reading Time 6-7 Minutes

I - Love - Mixing. Even when working on the production end of a track, my brain tends to make decisions with the mix already in mind. Often, the biggest challenge in the mix stage is getting the vocals to sit in the right place within the music. The sweet spot tends to be crisp sounding but not too thin. Leaving an abundance of lows/mids can create mud but removing too much can make things sound brittle and harsh. For me, it’s all about finding the perfect balance between the highs and lows for each unique vocalist to get the perfect end result. Over the years I’ve tweaked my process a million different ways, and it continues to evolve. The plugins I use specifically will certainly change from time to time but they always serve a similar purpose.

I should mention I always start by mixing the instrumental layers first, and work the vocals into that. As you read on, you will see that I prefer to work in moderate steps using multiple inserts on the same track. I find subtle nipping and tucking along the way leads to a present and rich vocal without sounding over compressed or EQ’d. I like to think of it as a “correct, enhance, correct, enhance” process - but it’s never set in stone!

Step 1 - General Clean Up

I always start by touching up the most obvious issues with multiband compression, this ensures they aren’t further exaggerated as we compress the vocal down the line. Recently I’ve been loving the Waves ‘F6 Floating Band Dynamic EQ’ for this. It’s got a real time spectral analyzer which helps locate trouble spots and can be very surgical if needed. I prefer multiband compression rather than EQ to start as it only reduces the desired frequencies when they cross the threshold set, thus not affecting the vocal everywhere at all times.

Every voice is different but there tends to be three spots I look at first. I’ll sweep through these bands with a sharp Q to find the exact area in need of correction. 150-300hz (this is where chest boom/mud usually swells up), 600hz-1k (controlling mid-range honk can really make a vocal sound more pleasant to the ears especially when the singer belts) and 2.5-7khz (harsh edge and sibilance usually live here). I’ll also roll off around 80hz and below seeing as there is no information we want down there anyways. The width of the Q and amount of reduction will change in every scenario. Trust your ears and compress until things no longer pop out.

Step 2 - Introduce Compression

At this point I’m just looking for transparent, medium speed, soft knee compression to get the party started. I really like Waves ‘Rvox’ for this - it’s quick, easy and affective. I’m usually looking for about 4-6 DB of gain reduction at peak moments to level out the performance without adding any character. Think of it as rounding out the edges and beginning to control dynamics.

Step 3 - Surgical EQ

Now that we’ve done a little tonal clean up and started to fatten the voice up, further subtractive EQ is usually done next. I tend to focus back in on the low mids, carving out trouble spots with a super tight ‘Q’ that are still sticking out to much. I’m looking for precision, not character so the stock Avid ‘EQ III’ works great. Sometimes to get a nice, crisp vocal, the best move is to remove the thicker low/mids to make the whole package feel brighter and more present, before reaching to boost the highs. This also frees up sonic space for for the vocals to sit around the bass, synths, drums and other competing frequencies. Depending on the sonics of the over all song, I may also boost 16 khz and above to add a little “air” if the track calls for it.

Step 4 - Compression Part 2

At this stage in the game my goal is to further compress without affecting the transients. I’m still not looking to add any character and slow attack is key. Some of my mixer friends may think I’m crazy for this but my next go-to is Waves ‘Renaissance Axx’. Touted as a guitar compressor, I love it on vocals. Setting the attack as slow as possible, I can further reduce things another 3-6 DB on peaks with almost no audible compression. What really makes this plugin great is that the auto make up gain brings out the quieter moments nicely.

Step 5 - Final Correction

The first 4 steps have lead to a clean, present, compressed vocal without sounding squashed and lifeless. Dynamic yet controlled. This final corrective step will vary with the sonic character of the voice. Depending on the singers timbre you may find it’s a little on the sibilant side (sharp “s” and “t” sounds etc) or it may still feel a little to thick in the low mids. Regardless of the problem I usually reach for Wave ‘C4 multiband compressor’. It works great as a broad stroke tool when de-essing or further controlling low mids.

I should add I rely heavily on volume automation to correct the worst offenders of sibilance. Subtle fader moves can easily fix most of the stand out problems and that way you avoid shaving off to much top end with something like the ‘C4’ or any de-esser for that matter.

Step 6 - Let’s Get Tasty - Compression 3.0

This is when I like to reach for a compressor that will add some warmth and flavour to the mix. My current favourite for this is the UA 1176. World renowned for its tonal characteristics it’s been my favourite addition to my vocal chain as of late. Usually, but not always, with a medium attack and slightly quicker release. Since our peaks have been rounded out and controlled in the first 2 steps of compression, I usually look for about 3 DB of average reduction here. The pre-levelled signal can handle a bit more of this coloured compression seeing as it isn’t peaking nearly as much as a raw vocal would. This allows for a more steady compression sound and the character this compressor brings!

Step 7 - Final Touch - Special EQ

If the compressor was adding salt to the pallet, here’s comes the pepper. I like to treat this last step as broad stroke enhancements. Usually focused on adding that last little bit of top end air and presence. Lately I’ve been loving the UA Pultec EQ for this. Using a nice broad Q, voice depending, I’ll boost the 10, 12 or 16 kHz bands to taste.

Step 8 - Everybody on the (sub) Bus!

For me, the last, but very important step is the bus treatment. I always group my vocals based on parts or sections through their own sub bus. Lead vocals and select harmonies/doubles. BGs grouped by parts, “oohs and ahhhs”, counter melodies, vocal vamps etc. I usually end up with 4/5 sub-groups of vocals being sent to their own aux.

On those busses I look for bus compression to glue together all the vocal layers and affects (reverbs, delays etc. which i didn’t dive into in this post). The UA Neve 33609 was a game changer in this regard. It is nothing short of amazing at doing just that.

Following the compressor I like a channel strip like the SSL 4KE. It’s modelled from input to fader so it adds that certain “je ne sais quois” even if I’m not using the EQ or compressor. That said as the mix grows and evolves, I lean on this strip for further adjustments as required.

The Takeaway

There is absolutely no right or wrong way to go about mixing. The gift and curse of this part of the gig is that it is usually completely subjective, especially in the process one uses. Even as I write this, I’m contemplating new plugins to add to my mix chain. It never ends! Have fun, try new things, trust your ears and come up with as many efficiencies as you can to allow yourself to focus on being creative. Happy mixing!

Day 9

1/31/20

Today I was able to sleep in a little bit, until 9:30. I went grocery shopping at walmart and aldi with my friend Alexa who lives with me, and I spent around $30 on a lot of stuff: several boxes of mac and cheese, salad materials, beans, snacks, my favorite berry cereal, some stuff for school, deodorant, etc. I will post receipt pictures and stuff later instead of wasting time listing everything. when I got home i had the last remains of my scrambled tofu and vegetables and made an iced chai to drink while I wrote a cover letter for a graphic design job that I really hope I get. I finally submitted my application materials around 1:30 which was good timing bc I had to catch a bus at 1:40 to go to my nannying job. I took the 3 bus to St. Anthony Park elementary school to pick up this girl who I’ve been nannying since the fall and knew from my previous job at a preschool. Her family is really rich, but kind of boring. Theyre really nice to me though, and I really really appreciate being paid 16 an hour. The girl is pretty good, but kind of spoiled/entitled, which kind of goes without saying.

At her house I had some random brand of expensive organic chips with salsa and made a london fog with oat milk and earl grey tea. The girl has a ton of LOL surprise dolls which reminded me of the video we watched in class. Their house is huge, like their living room alone is the size of a friend of mine’s entire two bedroom apartment... But anyways I came home at 5:15 to find that a package had come for me - it was a winter jacket I bought on the app depop several days ago - a vintage reversible jacket that can either be yellow or red and navy. I got it for 25$, which was a great deal for a jacket. Depop is kind of like the app young trendy people use to buy and sell clothes. I probably talked about it in an earlier blog post but can’t remember. In theory the idea is good, but it does kind of get stupid when sellers will buy things from thrift stores- like jeans that are originally 5$ - and then jack up the price to 50. I’ve always found that annoying, and I have a friend who does it. Personally, i’ve sold some jeans and stuff I had gotten for 60, but for 25-40 because at the end of the day im just trying to get rid of things I dont wear..

Then me and all my housemates drove to white bear lake to Alexa’s aunts house for a birthday dinner. it was really sweet that they invited us, and we had mac and cheese, lasagna, salad, garlic bread, french silk pie, and champagne. I haven’t had such a full meal like that in so long, so I was overjoyed. Her aunt and other relatives were also really sweet to us. When we got back from that, we went to a party at some of our friends house who use their house as a venue. I normally don’t have that much fun at those things but I was in a good mood and so my outlook was more positive. I had a sociable ciderworks freewheeler cider which is one of my favorite drinks. We were at the party for like 4 hours and did a lot of karaoke which was funny. When we finally left, two girls were fighting outside in the snow and it was kind of messed up.. Also one of my enemies was at the party which was kind of cringe because I like to just avoid him at all costs. When we all got home we sat on the couch and talked about the night and I had a bowl of cereal and showered. I ended up going to bed at 3:30.

Probably running on adrenaline (with >3 hours of sleep) but managed to stuff my backpack and rush out the door before being charged for a late check-out. Goodbye smelly room in Barcelona!

I really wanted to try and make it out to the beach before we hit the train but logistically it wasn't possible and probably more stressful since we would be cutting it close on time. So we stopped in a bakery to pick up some chocolate and cream pastries and went to the La Rambla street markets to pick up some seafood paella for the road (sorry everyone on the train who had to smell it or watch me eat this messy dish). Thank god we showed up to the train station when we did. So far this has been the only station where there's a security check (like TSA airport level). The line to board was also very long since passports and tickets were being checked for every individual. Our guy seriously questioned our Eurail since it was stamped that we left on March 2nd when in reality we left Berlin on March 3rd (the day we wrote down in our Eurail log). I guess it's human error and eventually he understood that, but it was still slightly stressful that we might not have been able to board.

Breezy train ride once we were on though. We arrived in Paris in the evening and tried to book our train tickets back to Salzburg, but had to come back the next day since the office was closed. We took the metro to our janky Peace and Love Hostel and climbed a tower of stairs to the 5th and 7th floors where we were staying. I don't think 3-person bunk beds should be a thing. You're either basically sleeping on the floor, have an inch of space before your nose hits the ceiling, or you're sandwiched in-between the two beds. I took the middle bunk (sorry Raine and Aubree but first come first dibs). Poor tall and lanky Patrick was on the top floor and top bunk, and his roommates were already sound asleep.

We decided it would probably be a good idea to get some food in our bellies. I'm horrible at giving directions (but also never said I was great at giving them. I'm directionally aware for myself but can't help others for the life of me) but happened to be the only one with access to the maps. We got turned around a couple times and walked down a sketchy street since we forgot our turn to cross the Seine river. Eventually we found Street Bangkok Local Food (which google lied about it being cheap but it was definitely filling and you got free water and your money's worth in my opinion). At one point in the night, I looked out the window and saw a dog walking with his owner. Which lead to the conversation about animal intelligence, the food chain, and how we measure intelligence. We decided that leisure time correlates to intelligence because having more leisure time allows you to spend less time focusing on survival and more time doing self-fulfilling exercises or expanding your knowledge in different ways. Such a random/deep/fun/thoughtful conversation.

After sorting out train ticket shenanigans, Patrick and I met up with Aubree and Raine at a cafe near the Louvre. We ordered little baguette sandwiches for brunch and sat huddled near the outdoor heaters (trying not to get blown away by the cold wind). Yay again for free water and REFILLS.

We crossed the street, saw the beautiful glass pyramids calling our names, and dashed to them. We didn't (have the time to) see the actual inside of the museum, but we were able to take in the amazing architecture of the Louvre. From there, we walked through the hedges to the Carrousel Arc de Triomphe and continued wandering around the city.

Pat and I found an underground rail system and took it to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. Such a completely different vibe from La Sagrada Familia. It was so dark inside, but also interesting to see this style of stained glass and architecture. There was also a service going on in the middle of the day.

We took the underground rail service thing again but somehow got lost trying to navigate where to go. Also, my phone was confused about my location because we were underground and the service was patchy. Eventually, we made it out and found the actual Arc de Triomphe. They really like their arcs here. We could see the Eiffel Tower peeping through the buildings, and made our way over to her.

She’s a beauty. Such a pretty sight both up close and personal, and from a distance. She stands tall and proud, glistens gold, and twinkles in the evening. For dinner, Pat, Aubree, Raine, and I had a janky little picnic on a patch of grass under the Eiffel Tower. The idea was cute, but the food was a little sus. The baguettes were packaged and not fresh, and the cheese was DEFINITELY expired. Both smelly and did not taste right at all. On the bright side, the salami, grapes, and wine we shared were bomb. I also wished that there weren’t so many salesmen approaching us every 5 seconds to try and sell souvenirs to us. Please make like a tree and LEAF. Later we tried to find a Jazz club but there was a birthday party happening inside and we didn’t want to crash it so we hung out at a little bar/restaurant and got french fries to end the night.

March 16

Couldn't really sleep since I was worried we might miss our train (also concerned that Pat wouldn't wake up in time since he didn't have a phone or alarm clock). Once again, adrenaline got me going in the morning. And a little ham and cheese croissant with a cup of coffee brought me to a functioning state of mind. Boarded the train from Paris to Mannheim, and then changed trains from Mannheim to Munich. I guess we got off the train too soon in Munich-Pasing (instead of at the München Hauptbahnhof) but before we could hop back on, the train departed from the stop. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that led us to the giant mall behind the stop. The signs were super confusing to find the restrooms, but eventually we found where they were hidden. We also stopped to get Five Guys for our train ride back home to Salzburg. Back on the platform, we were waiting for the right train to come along. Patrick and I made conversation with a girl who was also waiting for the same train as us. She's from a little village town in Austria and was completely awestruck to be talking to Americans. She never dreamed that she would ever meet people from the US and was so enthusiastic to learn about us. We also enjoyed getting to know her and invited her to sit with us on the train. She was telling us about her job and studies as a carpenter and also shared stories of her dog :) Such a ray of sunshine.

I think the worst part of traveling back home is knowing that you’re so close yet so far. You finally arrive at the train station or airport, but then there’s the ride back to your house. That part kills me. Being on the bus for that 15 minute bus and then climbing the thousand steps up the Mönchsberg was a beast. Finally plopped into my bed. HOME SWEET HOME.

retrospect last week, it elapsed so peaceful. but in fact I burning for the coming salary which turned out extraordinarily surprising. previously I thought the year end most financially demanding tasks completed with 2 loans from my old hometown relatives, ie my sisters & brother. but suddenly my vpn service informed me renewal due in couple days, exactly Nov 22. while recently my salary released usually on 19th monthly. so I took it easily. from 19th, Sunday, I looked out hopefully descending of salary till 22rd, Wednesday. everyday I prayed for solution. it was a sunny noon on 22rd Nov, 2017, I gave up canteen lunch and hope my last salvage. but it didn't. then I sought out with blessing resolution for dorm canteen's loan. they didn't refuse my appeal, offer ￥1000 at once. with it I immediately deposited in my icbc credit account. CCP surveillance blocked my trading attempts for a quarter, then went smoothly. my paypal strangely refused my payment, claiming verification failure. so I ditched it and paid via alipay, a mainstream electronic financial tool in PRC. my vpn vendor listed under its transaction log in alipay. might be that's what PRC surveillance demands in defying of my paypal which done last year perfectly. then most wanted salary release notification sms arrived: with year end bonus, I got 4420 CNY. I had previously doubted many times my budget & salary supporting gap, and thought I will save my purchase from returning less to bank credit, which already warned me insufficient pay back & possible sue over me. the main coming bill is my son's desktop os, ubuntu on a ssd usb drive, and gift sending to my nephew whose first child, a daughter just born. I had already refrained from gifting his wedding ceremony nearly year ago. so this time my congratulation really due to manifest. they both costs ￥300. with the powerful salary, I maintained last month pay back standard, 500 CNY each for ccb & psbc credit debt, while clear all my due liability among bills active in life, except debt to canteen loan adds more hundreds. but in the afternoon, when I handed over ￥1700 including 200 to pay a woman staff there for my laundry, the canteen operative woman and her husband accepted without complains. God, dad, what a wonderful moment after so many neck breaking anticipation! in the night I informed my son online the clearance of bills and claimed only left unfinished is donation annually to poor kids in China mountainous area, and bbn bible radio. but now, I want more: equipping my son woz a pair of new winter shoes to replace his wrecked one, and my tea deficit for months. my son's programming lesson arranged by his mom stepping in, my preparing his desktop environment is portable os on ssd udisk hopefully running on hardware of his old dell notebook and intel nuc in his lounge. dad God, let my son adopt my suggestion, first step to master typing via training tools from chrome store on his chromebook. grant me helpful and his prompt execution for remaining aid from powerful google & online courseware. I have almost no more debt in his education, nor in my online business, our portal for Royal China and democracy of China progressive.
