15 Golden Retriever/Black Cat Energy Romance Books
Grumpy heroes are my jam most of the time, but sometimes I’m in the mood for opposites attract romance done a little differently – and that’s where golden retriever meets black cat energy kicks in. One of my favorite rom com movies growing up was 10 Things I Hate About You, and it’s got the same energy as this newish romance trope. It’s not quite grumpy/sunshine (or reverse grumpy/sunshine, which…

REVIEW: The runaround by Sylvie Stewart
Click the image to buy on Amazon Summary Men are good for two things: orgasms and reaching the wine glasses on the top shelf.ARI: I’ve always said boyfriends are like martinis; they’re lots of fun at first, but the longer you indulge the bigger headache they’ll give you. With career goals to crush and more than a few balls in the air, there’s no place in my life for the messy complications of…

giles is the hottest man on btvs hands down. i get that angel is supposed to be the heartthrob of the show but giles has an intellectual sexiness that he could never hope to match. i get why jenny calendar is immediately into him (she is also gorgeous btw)
Angel can’t be sexy bc he’s too busy doing whatever he’s doing with his shoulders where he looks like he’s guilty and ashamed of his own shadow.
Giles is my guy!! His relationship with Jenny is a lot of fun.

Books Tag Game!
Tagged by @dragonnarrative-writes.
Point of order: I'm a picky bitch. The amount of books I've read vs the books I'd actually put on a bookshelf are like.... maybe 20, taking into account most of them are part of a series. Tho tbf most of the 'good books' I want aren't on KU and I'm kinda fucking broke. Also yes, the early days of booktok got me back into reading after a 10+ year slump in case that wasn't about to become insanely obvious.
1) The last book I read:
Fake It Till You Make It by Flora Quincy. Been on the hunt for more omegaverse books, but this one was terrible >< DNF'd.
2) A book I recommend:
I don't know how not to sound like a basic bitch broken record, but for the love of god go read A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. Just stop after book three in the series.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout. Binged the first three books (that were out) in two days. Wish I could afford the rest.
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
Hi. Basic bitch again :) A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. You have no idea what this book meant to me the first time I read it and the strength it gave me to open my eyes and see that I was worth so much more.
5) A book on my TBR:
Currently there are about 28 of varying excitement to read (most of it is what I refer to as 'junk food'), but I've got an upcoming release in September for the fourth book in the Beasts of the Briar series by Elizabeth Helen called Broken By Daylight I'm looking forward to.
6) A book I’ve put down:
Exodus by Kate Stewart. I was prepared to put this series as one of my all time favorites with the way I felt falling in love with Sean and Dom, but after that... refused to read more. Genuinely devastated, still not over it. Haven't looked at rainy days the same ever since.
Also just because it still bothers me - House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J Maas. What the fuck girl?! The first one was so good and I praise so much of your work! But it's like ever since ACOTAR book 4 came out you've just dropped the ball...
7) A book on my wish list:
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Hopefully it's better than some of the other dragon books I've tried recently.
8) A favorite book from childhood:
The Sight by David Clement-Davies. It's a fantasy book that follows a pack of wolves and their daughter who has visions. Have tissues on hand.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
Depends on the friend >>; We talking a cute hockey romance like Weak Side by SJ Sylvis... or is the freak flag flying with Shantel Tessier's The Sinner?
10) A fiction book you own:
Death: A Life by George Pendle. Not my usual fare, but it's a fun 'autobiography' about the grim reaper.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Does a high school yearbook count?
12) What are you currently reading:
Just cracked open Baby + the Late Night Howlers by Kathryn Moon, but I'm expecting to probably close it within the first few pages (seriously, my kingdom for a good omegaverse that I haven't already read 😭).
13) What are you planning on reading next?
God, idk. Most of the books on my list either cost money, aren't out yet, or are titles I know are most likely gonna be mid at best.
No pressure tags: @cosmicpro, @void-my-warranty, @all-purpose-dish-soap, @stuffireadandenjoy, and @rememberwren

REVIEW
Vanished by Anna J. Stewart
Circle of the Red Lily #2
Wow ~ Just ~ W O W!!!! ~ Once I began to read I could not put this book down!
What I liked:
* Mabel Reynolds: single mother, victims advocate, searching for answers about her missing twin, accountant, good friend loving mother, honest, caring, stands up for what she believes in, rather taken with Paul Flynn
* Paul Flynn: lawyer, investigator, difficult childhood, bright, strong, resilient, keeps his promises, good friend, protective, caring, has fears to overcome, grows and learns more about himself, rather taken with Mable and her daughter Keeley
* Keeley: almost nine, bright, curious, great addition to the story, loved her interactions with others
* Catching up with the residents of Temple House – a family of sorts – wouldn’t mind living there
* Watching the relationship develop between Mabel and Paul
* Sylvie: Mabel’s twin, disappeared, presumed dead, strong presence even though never there in the flesh
* Jeff Chambers: Paul’s friend, Head of the DA’s special investigation unit, loving father and husband, bright, good friend
* The supporting characters and the parts they played in the story – some old and some new to the series
* Learning more about the Circle of the Red Lily – and just how evil it must be
* That it took place in Los Angeles County and knowing where most everything was located as I grew up there
* The conclusion, link to the next book, and knowing there will be another book…hopefully soon
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant to dislike
* The evil people who in the decades old Circle of the Red Lily and all the pain they have caused
* Having to wait to read the next book
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Arc Manor Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
BLURB
She'll risk everything to expose the truth. Since her twin sister Sylvie's disappearance seven years ago, single mother Mabel Reynolds has turned grief into action and become a strong voice for victims of violence and abuse. When new revelations shed light on what may have happened not only to Sylvie, but dozens of other women, Mabel's hope for answers is reignited. But the new oh-so-charming DA overseeing the investigation seems more interested in a quick rather than an accurate resolution. With little faith in the system, Mabel isn’t about to stay quiet, not when she’s finally close to the truth. She’s willing to go up against anyone—even a smug, irritating, attractive DA to get the answers she and other families deserve. Open and shut. That's what Assistant DA Paul Flynn has been told about his new assignment supervising a house of horrors case. With a high-profile conviction at stake, Paul can’t afford to make a wrong move if his professional goals are to be achieved. But Mabel Reynolds has his attention. All of it. Attraction aside, the woman knows far more than what’s in the official files which makes her something even more intriguing. But using Mabel as an asset means exposing her and her young daughter to even more danger. Danger that is closing in on them from every side. As even darker forces appear, and their lives are threatened, Paul is faced with risking not only his entire career, but also the one thing he never anticipated losing: his heart.

During that time, she receives a news that the author of the book which was adapted for the screen 20 years ago where she play a main role and now in its remake, she’s doing another part, while a young sensation playing the main part. This is more like the evolution of cinema. The 20 years is too soon for her, while the cinema and its trend advanced rapidly. Precisely to say, the commercial films and young actors taking over the art films and true artists’ places respectively. If you at least 30 years old, you would get this film more than others. Because while I was growing up in the 90s, the cinema was so different. I’m not talking about the technology like computer graphics, but the story and how it was narrated for the screen. Now the science- fiction and dystopian themes taking over with the young audience and social media support. I think it was a quite meaningful film, particularly if you adore films like the recent evolution in cinema was so faster than ever. The negatives were, the film was too long, slow pace and too simple drama. The positives were, the actors and their performances, the locations, theme and some of the dialogues. Directed by a French filmmaker, this is an international project with a few guest appearances. Most of the film was set in the Alps. Totally different than what I was anticipating, but I still like, except in a few parts where I got bored for its weak development. So this is for the selected audience, that mean it will be appreciated by a very few and I’m kind of neutral with mostly in its favour. _6/10_ M...

A Detective's Deadly Secrets by Anna J Stewart
A Detective’s Deadly Secrets by Anna J. Stewart is sadly the last in the series.  The hero is FBI Agent Eaman Quinn, someone readers should be familiar with.  He is reunited with a former girlfriend, Lana Tate.  She is searching for answers surrounding her late husband’s death but needs his help.  Together they work the case and become reacquainted.
Vanished is the second book in the “Red Lily series.”  It featuressingle mother Mabel Reynolds who wants to find answers regarding her twin sister’s disappearance. When new revelations shed light on what may have happened not only to her twin, Sylvie, but dozens of other women, Mabel hopes to find answers. New to the case is Assistant DA Paul Flynn who is willing to listen to her concerns and to investigate the case. Even allowing Mabel and her friends to add their input.  As they get closer to finding what happened their lives become endangered. As they work together there is an instant attraction which complicates matters further.
Both these books have a riveting suspenseful story with some romance. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as they won’t want to put these books down.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the story?
Anna J. Stewart: This final book in the “Honor Bound Series” evolved. I wanted it to be Eaman’s story, appearing first in Gone in The Night, book three.  When I ended the series, I wanted to go full circle with this book eight.  Since book three he has made appearances in all the books. It made sense to me to make his love interest someone he knew but could not get involved with because she was married.
EC:  How would you describe Eaman?
AJS:  Honorable, protective, loyal, calm, and confidant.  He is somewhat lost, questioning his own motivations as to why he still is an FBI Agent. He specializes in child abductions and child killings.
EC:  How would you describe Lana?
AJS: Lana is the one who really guides the story.   She can kick butt. She was an alcoholic but is now ninety days sober. Determined, skittish, stubborn, with a lot of inner strength. She makes poor decisions.
EC:  Why the alcoholism angle?
AJS:  I made her newly sober. An alcoholic is always an alcoholic. I wanted her to be in a place where a relationship is not an impossibility, but she must be careful to take care of herself. I wanted to write a character with substance abuse for quite a while. For this romantic suspense it added an extra layer.
EC: The relationship?
AJS:  She comes back into his life after her husband died eighteen months before. Lana has burned bridges because of her grief.  He is the only person she can trust. Lana is an interesting counterbalance to him. He wants something more than work and darkness.
EC:  How did you get the idea for your other book, Vanished in the “Red Lily Series?”
AJS:  It is book two in the series.  Exposed was the first book that ended with the heroine in Vanished, Mabel, having her sister disappeared eight years ago. I wanted to write a book where she experiences the loss of her identical twin sister but without any answers. There is a bit of a cliff hanger.
EC:  How would you describe Mabel?
AJS:  A single mom to an eight-year-old daughter, born at the same time her sister disappeared. She lives in an apartment building with four of her best friends, trying to help her what happened to her sister. She is going through a lot of emotional traumas. She is spiraling downward after Sylvie was tragically murdered. She is trying to deal with her emotions of anger, sadness, and frustration to find answers. Logically she knows Sylvie is dead but has a slimmer of hope she is alive.
EC:  What was the significance to the twin sister, Sylvie, coming alive in Mabel’s dreams?
AJS: My editor is a twin. I read a lot and talked to them about the psychological connection of identical twins. She is part ghost and so much a part of Mabel. There is this inherent connection. Readers can think of Sylvie as a dream, ghost, and/or Mabel’s self-conscious. I hope they consider her as an actual character in the book.
EC:  What are the differences between Mabel and Sylvie?
AJS: Mabel is practical, level-headed, logical, haunted, determined, and energetic. Sylvie was a dreamer, the romantic one, and happy. She chased the dream of stardom in Los Angeles. She always persevered.
EC:  How would you describe Paul Flynn?
AJS:  He grew up in Los Angeles and has always hated it. He is charming, kind, empathetic, tender with a little attitude. He is a high-profile DA which comes with a lot of confidence.  I liked playing with the dynamic that depending on who he is in contact with he has some different personality traits. He is very good at adapting to different situations and handling different types of people. He thinks quickly on his feet.
EC:  What about the relationship?
AJS:  Paul and Mabel have an instant connection. He sees in Mabel someone who really needs answers.
EC:  Next books?
AJS:  Book three picks up a couple of weeks after Vanished ends.  The epilogue of Vanished has a cliff hanger. The titled is Buried out in November. This will be the story of  Dr. Cassia Davis, a forensic expert.  She is has not left her apartment in four years, but the hero is hired as her eyes and ears.
The next book is the third book in my “Hawaiian Reunion series,” titled Surprise Second Chance. The plot has a single father who is dealing with some custody issues of his children with his ex. He needs to find the work-home balance.  He is given the opportunity to reconnect with his high school sweetheart living in Hawaii.
THANK YOU!!
