حكاية صحفيّة مع صورة «لا وجود لها» وكيف أنقذتها Google

كنتُ أعمل على تحقيق صحفي عن أزمة مزارعين في قرية نائية. تلقّيتُ عبر البريد الإلكتروني صورة «مؤثّرة» لطفل يحمل سنبلة ذابلة أمام حقل قاحل. بدا المشهد مثالياً لواجهة التحقيق، لكنّ زميلاً لي اقترح تمرير الصورة على أداة جديدة تُدعى «SynthID Detector». المفاجأة؟ الأداة كشفت أنّ الصورة صُنعت عبر نموذج ذكاء اصطناعي تابع لغوغل، رغم أنّ المُرسل أقسم أنّها حقيقيّة. تلك اللحظة كانت كفيلة بإنقاذ مصداقية التحقيق، وربما سمعة الجريدة بالكامل. القصة لم تنتهِ هنا؛ تواصلنا مع المصمّم المزيّف، واكتشفنا شبكة حسابات تروّج لمحتوى زائف بغرض جمع تبرّعات وهميّة. لولا العلامة المائيّة الخفيّة التي تطبعها Google داخل كل بكسل، لمرّ التضليل بلا أثر. اليوم وبعد أشهر من الواقعة، أصبحت «SynthID Detector» جزءاً أساسياً من صندوق أدواتي. أستخدمها لفحص الفيديوهات التي تصل عبر «تيك توك» قبل نشرها، وأتحقّق من مقاطع صوتيّة تدّعي أنّها «تسريبات رسميّة». الأداة لا تلتقط سوى ما أُنتج بأدوات Google، لكنّها على الأقل ترسم خط دفاع أول. خاتمة قصصيّة: ربما لن تمنعنا التقنيات من رؤية الخيال متجسِّداً، لكنها تمنحنا القدرة على سؤاله: من أين أتيت؟ وذلك سؤال جوهريّ لأي باحث عن الحقيقة.

Google Launches SynthID Detector Portal to Combat AI Misinformation
New tool SynthID Detector helps identify AI-generated content.
SynthID Detector can detect SynthID watermarks in Google AI-generated images.
SynthID Detector, a new Google online service, will help identify AI-generated material. Generative AI allows people to create new text, sounds, images, and videos, raising context, authenticity, and verification concerns.
SynthID Detector verifies Google AI-generated content quickly and effectively. It promotes transparency in the fast-changing world of generative media by teaching detection across media types. The portal can highlight which content parts are most likely to include SynthID watermarks.
This application builds on Google's groundbreaking SynthID. SynthID initially offered a variety of technology solutions to identify AI-generated content and eliminate disinformation and misattribution by integrating invisible watermarks.
The SynthID watermark can be identified after content has been copied or altered due to its durability. After focussing on AI-generated graphics, SynthID now generates text, audio, and video. Veo, Lyria, Imagen, and Gemini are Google models. Google claims SynthID has watermarked over 10 billion documents.
SynthID Detector works how?
The SynthID Detector webpage is easy to use:
Upload content: Google's AI creates images, audio tracks, videos, and texts.
Check for watermarks: Next, the portal checks uploaded media for SynthID watermarks.
View outcome: The site shows scan results. If a SynthID watermark is identified, it will flag likely watermarked content. The site finds watermarked audio portions and suggests photo watermarks.
Text and video watermark detection will be added in the following weeks. The product is currently in development, thus specs may change.
Environment Rollout and Growth
Early testers can now use the SynthID Detector from Google. Future expansion is planned by the company. Researchers, media professionals, and journalists can join the portal waitlist.
Google is working hard to build a solid environment around SynthID and the gateway. Any developer can integrate their open-sourced SynthID text watermarking technology into their models.
Google is also forming commercial partnerships. They worked with NVIDIA to watermark Cosmos preview NIM microservice movies on build.nvidia.com this year. This partnership extends SynthID embedding beyond Google-generated content.
Google also partnered with GetReal Security, a leading content verification tool, to let third parties discover SynthID watermarks, recognising their importance. Google offers a form for interested companies to enquire about SynthID collaboration.
Google acknowledges that content transparency remains tough. To educate and empower users of AI-generated content, the company believes transparency tools and AI community collaboration are crucial.
Google launched the SynthID Detector along with new generative media models and tools, Veo-powered AI filmmaking, Google AI Ultra membership, AI Mode for shopping, AI in Search updates, and more AI insights from its CEO.

New Google AI Models and Tools Advance Creative Media Creation and On-Device AI
Google has announced numerous new models and tools that emphasise advanced generative media production and on-device capabilities to make AI more accessible.
Gemma 3n
Gemma 3n preview, a powerful, mobile-first AI model, is important. Gemma 3n, the first open model with a new architecture, was developed with Qualcomm Technologies, MediaTek, and Samsung System LSI. This architecture is optimised for rapid, multimodal AI to enable truly private and intimate interactions on computers, tablets, and phones.
Gemma 3n's main features:
Compared to Gemma 3 4B, it reacts 1.5 times faster on mobile devices, has better quality, and uses less memory. Per-Layer Embeddings (PLE) reduces RAM usage and allows models with 5B and 8B parameter counts to work with a dynamic memory footprint of ONLY 2GB and 3GB.
MatFormer training allows a 4B active memory footprint model to natively incorporate a layered state-of-the-art 2B active memory footprint submodel. This lets you dynamically balance quality and performance. We add mix-and-match capability to the 4B model to dynamically construct submodels for certain use scenarios.
Privacy-First & Offline Ready: Local execution enables features that safeguard user privacy and work offline.
Gemma 3n understands text, sounds, and visuals well and has excellent video understanding. Audio features include high-quality Automatic Speech Recognition and Translation. Accepting interleaved data from multiple modalities lets it understand complex relationships.
It performs better overall, but best in Japanese, German, Korean, Spanish, and French.
Gemma 3n gives an early peek at Android and Chrome's architectural breakthroughs with the Gemini Nano generation, which will be powered by this same architecture and released later this year. Google AI Edge for on-device development and Google AI Studio for cloud-based research allow developers to preview Gemma 3n today.
Google is releasing new generative media tools and models in addition to on-device improvements. These aim to empower artists and producers by pushing media generation.
The updated and new creative tools are:
Veo 3: A revolutionary video-making model that records speech, traffic, and bird sounds. It works in text and image prompting, lip syncing, and physics. Enterprise users can use Veo 3 on Vertex AI, while US Ultra subscribers can use Gemini and Flow.
Veo 2 updates: Creator feedback led to object add/remove capability, camera controls for precise movements, outpainting to extend the frame, and state-of-the-art reference-powered video for creative control and consistency. Flow has reference-powered camera and video controllers.
Flow: A Veo-specific AI filmmaking tool for creatives. Flow lets users create cinematic scenes, clips, and narratives using Google DeepMind's most advanced models (Veo, Imagen, and Gemini). Users can describe photos in plain language and manage plot elements. Google AI Pro and Ultra US subscribers can now use Flow.
Imagen 4, the latest model, produces gorgeous images with great typography quickly and accurately. Imagen 4 supports aspect ratios up to 2k, has enhanced typeface and spelling, has excellent detail clarity, and works well in many styles. The Gemini app, Whisk, and Vertex AI offer it with Workspace apps like Slides, Vids, and Docs. A faster version is coming.
Lyria 2: This music creation paradigm now allows unlimited research and innovation. Businesses may employ Vertex AI and creators can use Lyria 2. AI Studio and API access MusicFX DJ's interactive music composition model, Lyria RealTime.
Google emphasises responsible AI development. SynthID watermarks will help identify Veo 3, Imagen 4, and Lyria 2 outputs as AI-generated. This watermark-based verification gateway, SynthID Detector, is unveiled today to help consumers recognise AI-generated content.
