Wall of Eyes, On Film Coming to Indie Cinemas Jan. 18-25
Just before the Jan. 26th release of The Smile's new album Wall of Eyes, there is going to be a worldwide event Wall of Eyes, On Film at independent movie theaters. The side project featuring Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood as well as Tom Skinner, had my #1 Album of 2022 with A Light for Attracting Attention. A few months ago, they released the music video for "Wall of Eyes" directed by frequent collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson.
Tumblr media
movie event poster
Wall of Eyes, on Film (presented in 35mm film projection) will include the world premiere of PTA's music video for "Friend of a Friend" (they released an animated music video today), as well as the new album in surround sound, never-before-seen footage of the album recording, PTA's video for The Smile's "Wall of Eyes", PTA's video for Radiohead's "Daydreaming", PTA's short film of Thom Yorke's Anima, PTA's video for Radiohead's "Present Tense", and PTA's video for Radiohead's "The Numbers".
By this point they are one of the great music / filmmaker collaborators! I truly wish I could attend this screening of all these cool short-form films on the big screen, but unfortunately none of the theaters are in Boston: https://thesmiletheband.com/onfilmevents
Smile and PTA - please consider having this screen at Coolidge Corner Theatre or Somerville Theatre!

A self-confessional, personal dive into the manifestation of sx in the SP/sx variant stacking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anima (2019) the short film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, a somewhat trippy, musical modern fairy tale featuring Thom Yorke (Radiohead's frontman) as the lead actor and the one responsible for the movie's musical score. Yorke is SP/sx 5w4. While watching it, I thought this film was an extended visual metaphor for a soc blind view of society, life and afterlife, and the pursuit of sx that's behind the mind of every SP/sx. The sx portrayal is very sp-heavy, body focused (you'll see why) and more lowkey than a dom sx portrayal would be, as far as I know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note that Thom Yorke is INxx, and the film is supposed to reflect the artist's enigmatic depths, as an accompaniment to his Album of the same name. Also, warning for the Ni-triggered.
Tumblr media
It's on Netflix.

Anima (2019)
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
This accompanied short film for Thom Yorke’s third solo studio album has a pretty simple storyline. It follows a man (Thom Yorke) asleep along with passengers in a subway looking worn out in their dull uniforms then suddenly he caught a glimpse of a woman (played by Thom Yorke’s real-life partner and Italian actress Dajana Roncione) on the train and later they are dancing reluctantly. When the train stops, he follows the woman with obstacles along his way.
We can see striking images and colours created by Tarik Barri projected on his journey while dancing with other dancers choreographed wonderfully by Damien Jalet whether on the tilted ground or back on a beautiful street in Prague when he woke up and eventually found the woman. Darius Khondji's graceful cinematography made us feel the emotions when these two lost souls found each other and the man mindfully peace at last.
Anderson’s artistic touch on this enigmatic visual is perfectly fit for Thom Yorke's most maverick solo album to date. These immersive beats only want us to dream more a little dream of a poignant story like this.

The film gets surprisingly romantic. When we think Thom Yorke, we think anxiety, and there is definitely a lot of that. But it’s almost like Thom Yorke as a romantic leading man for a while there toward the end.
Yeah. Well, Buster Keaton would always do that. There would always be some scene where Buster Keaton is slightly romantic. But that last song, “Dawn Chorus,” is amazing — which I don’t know if that’s been played before (in concert) or not. I don’t think it has. It’s really, really so beautiful.
So Thom Yorke is Buster Keaton — that’s something we can take away from this?
Well, he has that similar thing, doesn’t he? Like, physically. He’s amazing with his body —very, very physical. I just kept saying, “More Buster Keaton, more Buster Keaton!” It seemed to fit.

Netflix 2019 Catch-Up #1
Tumblr media
I review a big chunk of movies every year. Mainly cinema and indie releases, however with the ever growing streaming platform (heck, Disney+ is right around the corner!) there is a humongous amount of content that comes from the likes of Netflix and Prime Video and sometimes on occasion I do give a full review for some films they release (e.g. Velvet Buzzsaw) but there are so many movies that they put out that I simply do not get to watch them all straight away. So here are my thoughts on a few of the Netflix Original films that have graced us so far this year that I was able to catch up on...
MURDER MYSTERY - The new very necessary Adam Sandler/Netflix collaboration comes to us in the shape of, well, a murder mystery. Sandler is joined by Jennifer Anniston (I see what you did there Netflix) with a somewhat star-studded ensemble cast (Luke Evans, Terence Stamp and Gemma Arterton all make appearances) and though unsurprisingly it is not big laugh-fest, as far as the Sandler/Netflix vehicles go, this is probably the best among them. This one at least offers some chuckle worthy moments and Sandler with Anniston share a somewhat decent amount of chemistry between each other. Also, the whodunnit aspect does give that extra edge as you try and guess who the murderer is. Overall score: 5/10
Tumblr media
UNICORN STORE - Brie Larson wants a unicorn. That is literally the entire premise of this film. Larson both directs and stars in this little whimsical indie about finding creativity and imagination in a dull and boring reality, and though I approve its ambition, certain cliché beats and uncalled for stereotypes definitely pull this back from being something special. Also, Brie Larson’s lead is supposed to be this rainbow-like sparkle of love and joy however whether it was the way the character was written or the over-the-top performance, I really couldn’t connect with her character and at times found her very annoying, when I imagine the film wanted me to root for her. Sam L. Jackson shows up for an amusing supporting turn though. Overall score: 6/10
Tumblr media
THE UNAUTHORIZED BASH BROTHERS EXPERIENCE - The Lonely Island are back once again with this Netflix 30 minute special about the true tale of baseball players Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire and their misadventures. Well, the only true part actually is their existence, as this ‘visual poem’ is all about The Lonely Island’s typical random whimsy, however the result is always very entertaining. The soundtrack is poppy with self aware quips and nonsensical cuts, all leading into each other gracefully, with monstrous production and a supporting cast filled with A listers. If you haven’t enjoyed The Lonely Island’s previous work this won’t change your mind, however if you have this is one of their best collaborations. Overall score: 8/10
Tumblr media
ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE - Netflix makes a lot of comedy movies, and most of the times all of them akum to a pile of garbage (sorry, but it’s true). So I was more than surprised when this out-of-the-blue rom-com starring The Interview’s Randall Park takes a solid twist on a familiar genre with a very funny script and this year’s best cameo in the shape of Keanu Reeves playing an over-exaggerated version of himself. Not going to win any awards but a perfect Saturday night watch. Overall score: 7/10
Tumblr media
ANIMA - Probably the strangest release on this list, this visual approach towards Thom Yorke’s new album directed by no other than Paul Thomas Anderson is a visual avant-garde feast with fantastic cinematography and dance choreography however with questionable underlining messages this ones begs the question of what is the entire point? There is a lot to like here from a technical aspect, but when it comes to actual substance I feel like the final product is a bit flat. That being said, from a visual stand-point this piece is incredible and running at only 15 minutes it’s definitely worth the time. Overall score: 6/10

The Smile "Wall of Eyes" directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
There is so much to celebrate here! First off - it was announced today that the Radiohead side project The Smile have a new album Wall of Eyes dropping on Jan. 26, 2024. The band, which features Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood as well as Tom Skinner, had my #1 Album of 2022 with A Light for Attracting Attention.
Secondly, the band released the music video for the title track from the new album and it was directed by Yorke and Greenwood's frequent collaborator / one of the greatest filmmakers of the now Paul Thomas Anderson. In addition to all of his films that Greenwood has composed the score for, PTA has directed the music videos for Radiohead's "Daydreaming", "Present Tense", and "The Numbers". PTA also directed Anima, a short film based on Yorke's solo album of the same name. By this point they are one of the great music / filmmaker collaborators.
Third, the video is amazing! This music video features Yorke in a number of roles. It's almost like he was a silent film star in another life or something!
