Norman and Emma are perpendicular; Emma and Ray are parallel.

The way they’ve composed this image is heavily symbolic.

Norman is usually shown to be “opposite” of Emma visually (in the image mentioned above, in their sitting arrangement in the dining room at GF, the way they’re usually never illustrated to be side-by-side during important scenes like the shipment, the reunion, their argument and so on, though there’s probably a lot more imagery than that); while Ray has always been by Emma’s side (GP arc, Seven Walls arc, choosing to support Emma in the end despite agreeing with Norman).

These differences in their dynamics have always been subtly hinted at throughout the manga—though not so subtly later on, in Norman and Emma’s case—and continues to be highlighted in official art like this.

Part I: “In the end...” (Ch. 32)

Ray is Emma’s “counterpart”. They seem different at first: Ray is more logical and meticulous while Emma looks at the big picture and does things based on her feelings, but they’re both really two sides of the same coin. They’re both logical (Emma showed her pragmatic side when she debated with Norman and presented a counter-proposal to his plan) and they both operate on their feelings (Ray cared deeply for Norman and Emma so he wanted them to live, and Emma cared for everyone so she wanted everyone to live).

They both also care for their family in the same way. When Ray was faced with the notion that he can live (or that he should live), he did his best to become the sibling he had never allowed himself to be. There’s a caring, almost motherly nature to him in the way he handles the kids, in the way he frets over Norman and Emma, and in the way he supports everyone silently.

Emma is the same: she’s a lot more loud and open about it, but they’re both very caring towards their siblings. Unlike Ray, however, she’s certainly a great deal more idealistic and ambitious.

Ray and Emma are similar because they are warm and tender, and they’re both very family-oriented. They do things for the sake of their family, putting their loved ones first and themselves last.

Their familial love manifests itself similarly, and while they do have their individual, defining traits, they are the same at their core.

Hence, they are parallel: heading in the same direction in terms of how they think and feel, but going about it in different ways.

An example would be from the final chapters of the Jailbreak Arc, where Ray explicitly points out that: “In the end, [they] were thinking the same thing.” (Ch. 32)

Part II: “Fate—has split our paths” (Ch.128)

Norman is essentially Emma’s “foil”. He has contrasting traits that serve to highlight Emma’s own. Take the famous “sun and moon” depiction for example: it is the night that lets you know the day exists, and vice versa. A more nuanced interpretation of this is that Norman, as the “moon”, operates on borrowed light.

Firstly, he is neither idealistic nor ambitious—in contrast with Emma, who most definitely is. He does not wish for extravagant or impossible things; despite, or perhaps because of, his intelligence, he only wants the simple things: to see the world, and to stay with Emma and Ray.

He does not actively set idyllic goals for himself, he only seeks to apply his mind in the present rather than consider abstract/seemingly unreachable concepts (I want to ride a giraffe!). He never even considered having their entire family escape until Emma brought it up. It is here that we see him operating on ‘borrowed light’; his actions in the Jailbreak Arc are made to directly achieve what Emma wants.

He and Emma get along and complement each other very well (more on this later), though they are fundamentally not the same.

Thus, Norman and Emma might share the same ideals (a world where they’re all free), but they aim towards different goals. Emma essentially wanted co-existence (at the same time, not necessarily at the same place), while Norman determined that the best route was to eliminate the demons altogether.

This in contrast with Emma and Ray’s dynamic, where they share similar goals, but different methods.

To further define this difference, it is Emma and Ray who can come to the same conclusion independently, with them working separately and finding out they thought the same way in the end (of course, with the absence of a conflicting variable—‘will we bring everyone or not’, that entire spiel).

Meanwhile, Emma and Norman only reach the same conclusion when they’re working dependently (this more so in Norman’s case, wherein he’s usually striving to achieve what Emma wants).

This illustrates itself clearly when Norman and Emma are working independently throughout the next few arcs of the manga, and eventually find that they both reached different conclusions about the same matter.

Case in point, this difference makes itself one of the center conflicts in 3 arcs (King of Paradise through the Imperial Capital Battle Arc). They even get an inside cover.

Hence, they are perpendicular: heading in different directions, and intersecting once (clashing).

It is through this consolidation of views that TPN manages to bring forth a (hypothetical) moral conflict to the forefront of its story through its characters—quite like a physical, mental, and emotional debate, wherein the protagonists each present one aspect of the moral conflict and work to achieve a balanced and unanimous outcome.

In other words, they complement each other magnificently in their opposition. Emma hopes for the impossible, while Norman works within the realm of possibility. Emma reaches for the sky, while Norman is rooted to the ground.

Norman sees the world for what it is while Emma sees it for what it can be.

Faith, Buffy, Dreams, and Secret Kisses

This is one of my favourite scenes in the series. Partially because it’s just my personal jam - I admit that I am Fuffy trash, and I have a real love for dream sequences. Buffy had great dream sequences, but this is where they take a step up. It’s a precursor to Restless in this regard and others. It feels weighty and meaningful, but also a little off and incongruent with itself, in that way that only dreams are. Lines are exchanged that don’t quite follow as direct responses to each other, clashing in interesting ways. It’s packed with foreshadowing, metaphor, and other juicy things. And beyond that, it’s a conclusion to Buffy’s entire arc this season about dealing with her shadow self, and it leads to what I think is the single most romantic moment in the series. I want to talk about this scene and unpack some of what I think it’s saying.

First of all, let’s talk about the setting. We’re in Faith’s apartment, bought for her by the Mayor. Essentially, the villain’s lair, where the two Big Bads plotted their evil plans against our hero. But it’s also a set where we saw most of the bonding and semi-familial love between Faith and the Mayor. A place of both evil and love. And for Buffy, a place of trauma. This is where she makes the decision and takes the action to kill another human. I don’t think she was unjustified in doing so, but it’s still an immensely traumatic act for her, and I think she loses a little part of herself when she does it. The location is very much a reflection of Faith, and Buffy’s relationship to her. I don’t think Buffy loves Faith romantically at this point, but I think she cares about her, and remains concerned about her, and I think it’s fair to call that a kind of love. Faith is also evil, a figure of betrayal but also temptation to the “dark side”. And she is also a figure of trauma, clear deep-seated trauma that she fails to resolve, and just gets worse over the course of the season. Buffy is essentially inside her own relationship to Faith, inside a stadium of sin, trauma, love, and shattered glass. Faith looks out of the broken window that they fought through, and we are reminded that their relationship too is broken, unrepaired, littered with the detritus of conflict. There’s no going back from this - even in dreams that window remains broken, and their relationship will always have this damage.

The props too are an interesting choice. TPN’s video on Graduation Day pointed out the painting of a giant snake with a man’s head on the wall. More conflicting feelings here - the Mayor is Faith’s closest connection to humanity and love right now, and also the reason for her betrayal of Buffy. Her redemption and damnation. We also see boxes of various things piled up - including the crossbow that Faith stole in Bad Girls. The image of packing up a room into boxes makes me think of moving away as a student. We must remember that Buffy is graduating today, on the verge of packing her life away and taking it somewhere else, and this reminds us of that.

The first thing of real substance we see is the cat, which jumps up on Faith’s bed. This is one of the aspects of this dream in direct conversation with Restless, where a cat symbolises the Slayer - a specifically feminine, solitary predator that stalks the night. In Restless, we cut to Miss Kitty stalking the camera from shots of the First slayer stalking Willow. Here though, the intercut images are between the cat and Faith, lying bruised and helpless in a hospital. The cat (and the Slayer) is, as far as Buffy is concerned, not a danger but a creature in need of help.

Buffy: "Who's going to look after him?" Faith: "It's a she. And aren't these things supposed to take care of themselves?"

They’re very clearly talking about their respective approaches to slaying, and to life in general. Buffy tries to encourage ties to humanity, telling Faith back in Revelations that she is on Faith’s side. Faith retorts that she alone is on her side, and she repeats that sentiment here. But Buffy is obviously proved right - Faith is lying almost dead because she rejected all help and care.

Buffy: "A higher power guiding us?" Faith: "I'm pretty sure that's not what I meant."

If the cat is the Slayer in this conversation, then the “higher power guiding us” could refer to the Watchers. It makes sense that Buffy delivers this line with a little wry smile, given that she’s just resigned herself from the Council. This allows a little bit of ambiguity in their debate - Buffy has taken on a little bit of Faith’s advice in emancipating herself and so making herself as the Slayer more self-reliant. The show agrees that that too is the right move. A little independence is good and healthy. What Faith means when she talks about “taking care of herself” is not self-reliance or independence, but emotional hardness and self-marooning to avoid hurt. This is something that Buffy will continue to struggle with for the rest of the series. Faith is kind of right when she states that the Slayer is alone and must take care of herself, and it’s up to Buffy to find a healthy way of dealing with that.

"Oh yeah. Miles to go - Little Miss Muffet counting down from 7-3-0.”

The scene shifts a little, and we get some foreshadowing for Dawn (Little Miss Muffet), and for Buffy’s death (730 days from now). This is done with the the lighting too, as Faith faces the camera, and the light of the dawn hits her face, in a shot extremely similar to the end of The Gift.

Interestingly, Faith is repeatedly used in this way. In This Year’s Girl, Faith talks about “little sis coming” as she and Buffy make the bed in her first dream. In Restless, that scene gets a callback (”Faith and I just made that bed”), in a scene that ends with the most anvilicious foreshadowing (”Be back before dawn”), as well as a callback to the 7-3-0 line (”Oh, that clock’s all wrong”). In Graduation Day, Faith refers to Buffy as being “dressed up in big sister’s clothes”, however to me Faith has always felt more as being the “little sister” in this relationship. She looks up to Buffy yet is also deeply jealous of her. She wants to be Buffy, to have her friends, her life, the love of her mother. She’s kind of a precursor to Dawn in this respect, so it makes sense that she’s a prophet for her coming.

Slayers having prophetic dreams is well-established, so it makes sense that a dream shared by two slayers would allow them to prophesise a little further ahead in time. Faith hints at this, remarking "Sorry, it's my head. A lot of new stuff.". You have to wonder what other “new stuff” Faith is becoming aware of. Perhaps a new perspective on everything Buffy’s been saying all season. Sharing a mind temporarily is often helpful in seeing another’s point of view. Faith does seem unusually thoughtful as she looks out of the broken window and remarks "They are never going to fix this, are they?".

This is perhaps my favourite line in the scene. It’s a slight mislead, as it comes right as we get a flash of the cat-as-Faith in the foreground. So we assume it’s a reference to her own injuries, which she is expected to never recover from.

But the Faith that’s talking isn’t looking at her own body. She’s looking at the broken window. The symbol for her broken relationship with Buffy. She has become us, the audience, looking at Buffy and Faith and saying “boy, those crazy kids really are never going to work it out, are they?”. It’s true for Faith, it’s true for Faith&Buffy, and it’s true for Buffy herself. When that knife entered Faith’s gut, all three were irrevocably changed forever. You can never put back the life you had before after it’s broken like that. All you can do is take what you can work with, and try to make something new.

Buffy: "What about you?" Faith: "Scar tissue. It fades. It all fades." Buffy confirms that the previous line was not about Faith specifically by asking “what about you”, in a lovely expression of concern. After everything, Buffy does still care about Faith. Faith’s reply of “scar tissue” is an obvious reference to the literal wound she is now carrying (emphasised by the shot of the knife that Buffy sees afterwards), but it’s interesting that she gestures to her face when she says this. It feels like a reference to her entire self. If we accept Faith as Buffy’s shadow self, then “scar tissue” is an accurate description of her. As Buffy herself says, Faith is who she could be if her life was worse (or, perhaps, who she would be if she allowed the tragedies of her life to rule her). She is the part of Buffy’s unconscious self that is revealed after receiving violence. She is the physical proof of trauma. The self that remains after pain.

Buffy: “Is this your mind or mine?” Again, hitting that note of symbiosis; emphasising how inextricably tied these two characters are. The lines between their psyches are blurred to the point of no longer existing. This is such an intimate moment, almost sexual, with Buffy and Faith unable to tell where their own mind ends and another begins. Imagine the intimacy of that - entering another’s mental space and allowing them into yours, so wholly that they become one and the same. It becomes a mutual recognition of unity and shared pain, and an affirmation of the eternal divisions between them.

I love the ambiguity of the “human weakness” line too. One way we are invited to read it is that Faith is doing a heel-face turn, and intentionally giving Buffy the means to defeat the Mayor. But we’re not allowed anything that easy, to wash away Faith’s sins with a quick redemption before the climax. Faith has miles to go before she can achieve that. It’s just as likely that Faith is talking about herself, and the human weakness that led her down a dark path, or that Buffy is talking about Faith through the Faith in her head, or Buffy is just working it out on her own, etc, etc. This is the information that saves the world, and I like that it remains an unknown. A permanent “maybe”, just as Buffy and Faith’s relationship is.

Buffy: "How are you going to fit all this stuff?" Faith: "Not gonna. It's yours." Buffy: "I can't use all of this!" Faith: "Just take what you need. You're ready?"

As the scene reaches its climax, we see the most obvious recitation of the season’s themes. S3 is about Buffy coming into conflict with her own shadow self, and here the show tells us how she does that - by taking what she needs. I mentioned earlier that we saw the crossbow from Bad Girls, from the “want/take/have” scene. Here, Faith is telling her the same thing, but in a more healthy way. She cannot just hedonistically consume everything like a crazed id-monster, but she also cannot deny herself things that she needs.

Most importantly, the “stuff” they are referring to is Faith’s, but as Faith says, it’s also Buffy’s. Everything that Faith is, Buffy is too, because she is her shadow self. Buffy must recognise this, accept it, and incorporate the shadow self into her own identity. She cannot be consumed by the shadow self and simply become Faith, allowing her shadow to consume her conscious personality (”how are you going to fit all this stuff?”). Instead she must recognise her dark mirror, and take the healthy parts, and integrate them into herself as an individual (”take what you need”).

It is at this point of healing and merging between Buffy’s self and shadow self that Faith reaches out, almost touches her in an action that feels so tender, and Buffy becomes conscious. She literally becomes her conscious self by making peace with her dream (unconscious self). She stands up, and walks over to Faith’s bed. This is the moment that their relationship all season has been leading to. She leans over, and places a kiss on her forehead.

This kiss is everything. It’s an act of thanks, as Buffy realises Faith may have given her what she needs to save the day (at the cost of Faith’s one familial figure). It is an act of service, as Buffy literally gives Faith the kiss she asked for when they started to fight in Graduation Day. It could also be an act of forgiveness. We know from I Only Have Eyes For You that forgiveness, Buffy learns, is done not because somebody deserves it, but because they need it. Faith at this point probably does not deserve it, does not want forgiveness (she wants to be punished), nor can she recognise it in her current state, but Buffy gives it anyway, adding another layer of heartbreak. It is given not for any purpose, but for its own sake.

Above all though, this is an act of recognition. We must consider the previous forehead-kiss that these two shared, back in Enemies, and Faith’s words directly before: “What are you gonna do, B, kill me? You become me. You're not ready for that, yet.” And in Graduation Day, just after Buffy stabs her: “You did it. You killed me.” And her words in the dream, just a few seconds ago: “You're ready?"

Now I don’t think that Buffy stabbing Faith to save Angel is morally equivalent to Faith voluntarily killing people to help an evil guy become a big snake. I don’t think the show wants us to think that either. But the line is firmly blurred. Angel says in Consequences that the act of taking a life will change Faith irrevocably, and Faith agrees. She sees herself as tainted from that point on, and if Buffy took her life, she would be tainted too. And though it’s understandable and morally defensible, there’s no doubt that a part of Buffy - her innocence - dies on that balcony when she sticks that knife in. That act is forever. The choice to do violence is permanent.

So when Faith says “you killed me”, she is saying “you have become me”. She identifies a common nature in them. And when Buffy kisses her, returning it in the exact same way as when Faith first said those words, she is saying “I know”. She recognises and responds to Faith’s mirror by holding up one of her own. She matches similarity with similarity. She is finally “ready” to assimilate her shadow self, and does it by telling her shadow self that she sees her, and that she was right.

The beautiful part of all this is that it is silent. Faith would’ve been aware of their unification in the dreamscape, since it was happening in both of their heads, but she has no way of knowing about this. I wonder if Buffy would ever tell her. I doubt it. This is the core of the Faith/Buffy tragedy. This is why I find this relationship so compelling. Buffy performs this act of recognition and devotion entirely in secret. It is a stolen kiss and a private confession. A whisper made to a sleeping lover. A letter written, sealed, stamped, and set on fire. It is an act of love and tenderness made entirely for its own sake, without witness or reward.

This is the single most romantic moment of the show for me. In this show that in many ways about how when nothing you do matters, all that matters is what you do, what could be more romantic than this gentle kiss that changes nothing against this aching hole of violence and betrayal between them, but exists anyway, just because Buffy felt it needed to be done. It’s a silent moment that nobody but Buffy and us are privy to. Neither Faith nor the rest of the world will ever know it happened, but I know I for one will never forget.

Happy Holidays! This is my TPN secret santa gift to @lizardshands ! sorry for the delay! I’m not the best at art so I decided to write a fic for you! (side note: Isabella is alive in this because she deserves to be!) I hope you like it!

Things had been going great for everyone in the human world. After Emma was found and her memories recovered, things began to settle down for everyone as the days went by peaceful blur. Most of the kids spent their time either at school, jobs, or just travelling; connected by their bonds but usually in separate parts of the world. That is until December hit.

Emma and Ray were walking up a snow-ridden path, the destination it led to being that of a supposed ski-resort. A couple days prior they had both received messages from an unknown sender, simply stating a time and date and coordinates. At first Ray just wanted to ignore it, he had received so many spam calls and texts daily that he wouldn’t even pick up his phone unless there was a name with the number. But once Emma reported that she also got the same text and convinced him to join her in “scouting it out”, they waited for the allotted day made their way to the meeting spot.

“Do you think this is all an elaborate prank set up by Norman?” Emma asked, as they were reaching the entrance to the resort. “I don’t recall any of Norman’s pranks being this long winded,” Ray huffed, “Well besides the time he faked his death” “Hey that doesn’t count! He didn’t even know he was going to survive that!” Emma responded puffing her cheeks at Ray. They had finally reached the door to the resorts main building. Rather than looking like a sketchy old, secluded hotel like one would see in “The Shining”, the place they found themselves at was nice and modern. Upon entering the lobby, they both quickly surveyed their surroundings and noticed two things: 1) It looked like an ordinary family-friendly resort, and 2) among the other families and people milling about were familiar faces! Waving at them from some seats around a fireplace were family from Grace Field!

“Emma! Ray! So, you got the message too?” Gilda came running up to embrace both in a big hug. “Gilda what are you doing here?! I thought you were still at school?” “It’s winter break right now Emma, I’m off for the month!” At this point Gilda had dragged them over to the fireplace to greet everyone else who had arrived. So far it was just Gilda, Don, Lani, Thoma and Anna. From what everyone could gather, all the kids from Grace Field had received the same text at the same time. While some kids couldn’t make it, the others decided to go with the same thought process along the lines of ‘if anything, Emma will be there’. “Where’s Norman I thought he would show up with you two?” Gilda asked Emma, “Do you think he’s behind this? Like some sort of elaborate prank?” “Ha! Norman’s pranks aren’t nearly this thought out or good for the matter! I could always see right through them!” Don juts into the conversation ready to give his two cents on the matter. He follows up sheepishly with “well, besides that time he faked his death, even I didn’t see that coming,” “Seeing as how even I didn’t know if I was going to survive, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a ‘prank’” From across the room across the lobby Norman makes his appearance, having just entered along with Barbara and Ayshe.

“Norman!” Emma jumps of the sofa to greet him with a big hug, “I thought you were still busy at the business you and Vincent set up?” “Vincent has been saying that I need to go on vacation, and when I got the text, he thought it would be the perfect excuse” “Barbara also wanted to tag along and, on our way, here we ran into Ayshe as well” While Norman was talking, they all made their way back to the fireplace, giving greetings to everyone and hugs as well. After exchanging pleasantries Don was the first the first one to bring everyone back to the matter at hand, “so, who do you think sent out the message? Anyone got any ideas?” Everyone looked at each other before Norman piqued up, “Oh I already figured out who it is, Vincent and I traced the number after I received it.” “What!? That’s important information! Why didn’t you tell us earlier!” both Emma and Don let out in surprise at Norman’s nonchalance to the question. Ray on the other hand, didn’t seem shocked at Norman’s remark; having his own ideas to who was behind this meet-up. After thirty more minutes of waiting the specified time was close at hand. From near the back of the lobby a feminine voice greets the kids surrounding the fireplace, “Ah good, it seems everyone is here.” Quick as lightning everyone turns around and is greeted by the sight of… “PHIL?!” Emma screams! Oh wait, the voice came from the figure behind him, “MOM?!” everyone, save for Norman, Ray, Barbara, and Ayshe screamed. The prior two having already figured out that it was her doing and the other two having no idea who she is save for mentions of her. “Hello, my dearest children, I’m so happy you all could make it!” Isabella smiles, happily embracing all the kids who just tackled her.

Once everyone had calmed down Isabella explained why she had brought everyone here. She figured that since they had finally managed to find Emma, and that the holiday season was fast approaching, now would be the perfect time to get everyone together to have some winter fun! As for why she contacted them all in such a cryptic way… well she knew that her kids were far too curious in nature to turn down a good mystery! “You know, you could have just called us normally, right? And why bring us to this resort anyway?” Ray asked, apprehensive as ever. “That’s simple Ray. This will be our first holiday season together as a family in the human world!” Isabella clapped her hands together in excitement; “I have been researching just about everything that people do for fun during the holidays and have narrowed it down to several activities that are must-haves for a good winter holiday!” “I know that I haven’t been the best mother to you all, but I hope to make it up to you one step at a time!”.

Everyone could see Isabella’s conviction, even though most of them had already forgiven her for her past she still feels like she is unworthy of such forgiveness. Understanding this, Emma and everyone couldn’t help but want to make sure that Isabella also got to have the best holiday too. Ray feeling like things were starting to get too awkward decided to break the ice, “that’s great mom, so what have you planned for us to do up here?” “I’m very glad you asked Ray!”

Isabella had broken up their holiday in a simple 3 step plan: first, holiday sweaters, second, fun in the snow, and third, hot coco and a nice holiday meal! Besides everyone that had made it on their own to the resort, she had also picked up some of the younger kids on her own. Having walked everyone to the cabin she had reserved, Isabella began to hand out the sweaters she had gotten everyone; there were even sweaters for Barbara and Ayshe since she figured some would bring their friends along as well. Once everyone had changed the room was filled with the absolute tackiest holiday sweaters anyone had ever seen. Some weren’t too bad, Gilda and Anna wore cute sweaters with ornament motifs, Ayshe had gotten one with a wolf pattern, and Barbara one with snowmen. Others were cursed with extreme tackiness, Don had gotten one with a Christmas tree on it with ornament puffballs and fake lights too, Ray had gotten one with a reindeer face on it, the nose of which glowed red! Norman got one that said, “Santa’s little helper”, Thoma and Lani got matching ones with their initials on them. Emma was absolutely ecstatic about her sweater, she had gotten a green one that looked like an elf costume, the same as Phil’s. “Look Phil we’re matching!” Emma ran up and hugged Phil, delighted that they got to be twinsies. “Do they really have to be this tacky” Ray said while taking of the reindeer ears that came with his, “oh absolutely, the tackiness is part of their charm!” Isabella pointed out; she herself was not immune to tacky outfits having dressed up in a cute Santa dress. Besides Ray’s objection everyone else seemed to be enjoying the sweaters, laughing and joking with each other on how they looked in them. Ray was also not immune to this and secretly enjoyed his as well. Now that everyone was dressed and ready to go it was time for the next phase of their holiday… snow time!

Once out in the snow everyone immediately went into a frenzy, Lani and Thoma started to round up kids to get a snowball fight going while the others decided to make snowmen. Soon the area started to fill the construction of snowmen of all shapes and sizes; Gilda and Ayshe were trying to make a snow-dog, Norman decided to go with a nice and simple standard snowman (the proportions of which were perfect), Barbara decided to make a gigantic snowman and was currently rolling a snowball the size of a boulder. Ray was just walking around admiring the snow-amalgamations when he caught sight of Emma and Phil working very hard a mass of snow, “What yah making there Emma a giraffe?” “Not even close! Behold!” with a flourish her and Phil step away to reveal- “A snow Mujika!”. At the reveal of the slightly lumpy snow approximation of Mujika there were plenty of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’, thinking that she looked kinda lonely Gilda and Don decided to get to work at making a snow Sonju (spear not included) to go next to her!

Meanwhile, what started as a snowball fight became an all-out snowball war. Hoping for reinforcements, the rival factions decided to convince the snowman makers to join their cause. It was immediately decided that each side got one of the main trio, since if any team had all of them they would win by a landslide. The following snow battle was brutal, the air rang with the sound of precision-made snowballs whizzing thru the air towards their targets. Sneak attacks, backstabs, frontal assaults and more were seen on this battlefield. The snowpocolypse would have continued, had it not been for Barbara who, instead of using it to make her snow-giant, decided to lob her planet-sized snowball towards the center of the battlefield. What happened next could only be described as a nuclear snowplosion as it crashed into the ground and sent snow flying everywhere. Declaring herself the winner. Barbara gave a rousing victory speech to the audience of newly made snow-children, who began to cheer at her complete victory on all sides.

After everyone settled down in the aftermath of the great snow war, Isabella called to everyone from the cabin that hot coco and dinner were ready. She had decided stay in and cook, while occasionally going out to watch the kids enjoy themselves; so proud of how her kids had grown. Entering the warmth of the cabin the kids were greeted with the smell chocolate and a veritable holiday feast. Sitting down and being able to eat with everyone brought back fond memories from when they were in the bunker as well as Grace Field house. After they gave thanks for the meal Emma stood up and raised her hot coco for a toast, “Today was an amazing day! Being able to spend it all with you guys will forever hold a special place in my heart,” “And we wouldn’t have been able to do this if it wasn’t for mom, she did her best to make sure we got to have fun together as a family and we wouldn’t be one without her!” To Emma’s touching speech Isabella couldn’t help but give a teary smile as all the kids raised their mugs in cheers as well; and the holiday dinner continued on from their as laughter rang through the night.

The Launch!

So, Identity V x The Promised Neverland Crossover finally arrived... last February 23, 2021 which was yesterday. Wohoo! 🥳 sorry for the late post but I’ve been grinding dices for this event and man! It was hard and tiring! The last days of season 14 and yesterday were the toughest matches I’ve been on. Daily matches feels like playing Rank Matches. It’s crazy! Anyway, I guess everyone is trying their best to earn dices and TPN Essences to get their favorite skin or TPN goodies 💪🏼 but no matter how exhausting and tough the journey gets it’s all worth it once you get your favorite skin. 🤩 If your new to IDV and your just interested in the crossover, let me answer some basic questions on how to get the TPN skins and other goodies.

How will I get the TPN themed skins and stuff?

Opening crossover essence gives you a chance in getting a TPN themed skin, portrait, items, and graffiti.

As seen above, the main prizes are the skins. The hardest one to get is the Bloody Queen S-tier Isabella skin. Based on the game statistics, a player is guaranteed to obtain it if he/she opens 250 essences. 🙄 For the A-tier Emma, Norman, and Ray themed skins, a player needs to open 60 essence to get one. Let me tell you it’s tough! I see people getting frustrated on the chat room calling it “The Promised Nothingland” Crossover. It’s funny but it’s true. I have two accounts on IDV, and I saved up 100 dices on each account which were rolled over in season 15. I was able to convert those dices into 14 crossover essences and got another 5 essences from pre-registering for this event. So, all in all, I had about 19 essences on each account but I played some more and got around 23. After the server maintenance on the first day, I opened all of the essences on my first account and never got a skin. I feel frustrated because I worked so hard to get one but didn’t. On the next day around midnight, I opened all of the essences on my other account and got the S-tier Isabella skin on my 7th try so I was on cloud nine. It’s by pure luck!

How will I get the Crossover essence?

You can get the crossover essence by either rolling dices on logic path (2 photos below) or by using inspirations.

How are dices different from inspiration?

Dices- are acquired points from your matches. 1000 points = 1 dice. Victory in a match is equivalent to 500 points. When your team is defeated the points depends on the score you’ve acquired in that match.

Inspiration- are acquired on your weekly login, logic path, or echoes.

What are echoes?

Echo is the currency of the game. You can buy any item on the game with echo except for the TPN skins. Some players buy dices or inspiration to get the crossover essence but getting the skin you want is like trying to win a lottery.

Actually, the ends weren’t that bad (a TPN/TOA essay)

So.

There are two series that ended recently and which had a lot of impact for me but also a very controversial end, like there are some wars between fans who argue about if the end was good… or not.

And me ? I really want to believe that The Promised Neverland (the manga, obviously) and Trollhunters have very coherent ends.

You’re probably wondering « why putting these two together ? » and I have a reason, multiple reasons actually. Of course, there will be spoilers of The Promised Neverland and the entire Tales of Arcadia saga (Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards and the movie Rise of the Titans).

First, Promised Neverland.

And mostly the character who made a lot of people cringe even before the last book : Emma. Cringe because, for some fans, she isn’t someone you can relate with because she isn’t realistic… in every sense of the word.

She is too perfect or at least too perfectly programmed for the plot whisky is not entirely true ! « She is too kind ! » well… maybe not ? I don’t think all her actions were driven by kindness.

She is too clever to be the naive kind of kind.

And don’t tell me that if she was that clever, she would have noticed that her orphanage was a farm because… she probably was in denial. Also, how would she imagine that monsters were waiting for them outside ? Maybe she didn’t see, maybe she didn’t want to see. But anyway, when she discovered the truth, her first thought was to get everyone out. EVERYONE.

Of course, there are her family, she won’t let them… but she did have to let some of them because it would have been too complicated, so that prove that she isn’t just a naive idealistic.

She wanted to fight, first for her family, then for every kid of every farm, because that wouldn’t be fair if her kids stayed alive and not the others. Then she also want to save every monsters, because that wouldn’t be fair since they didn’t choose to have to eat meat.

This is not about being kind, this is about being fair. This is about responsibility and guilt.

Emma doesn’t want to save everyone because everyone deserve to be saved or something cute like that, she would have killed less people or monsters otherwise.

She wants to save everyone because she doesn’t want to feel as bad as the people, as the monsters who hurt her and her family. She doesn’t want to be a monster.

When she understood, and ONLY WHEN she understood what it means to hunt, she realized how thin was the line between her enemy and herself so she doesn’t want to live knowing people lived horribly because of her.

She didn’t want to live with that on her conscience.

And… I think this is kind of selfish ? She doesn’t do that because it’s right, she does that because she wants to be better… I don’t know. She took a lot of risks, for her and for a friends just so she won’t feel that guilt.

But the others don’t care that the mutants die, only Emma who is really clever like I said before understood and was like « yeah so no we need to find a solution or it will haunt me for the rest of my life ». This is more like a perfectionist thing that a kind thing.

Which is… logical for a character like Emma.

Really the characters in the manga are very well-written, especially Isabella who has such a dignified way to die. It was a good end for her, very symbolic, even if I’m very sad about it. When she betrayed the blond guy, I was pleasantly surprised but at the same time it made sense like, it’s very consistent, everything is consistent even if we started with a complex project. Ending the meat industry ? Save all the children ? And Isabella’s end shows how the real villain of the story are the one who benefit from the system (which says a lot about our own society).

But Emma, actually, became « queen » of the system when she made the new treaty, she literally created a new system so… welcome responsibilities while she was only 14. Will she benefit too ? Or even take advantage ? But how could she after everything she learnt, and mostly after so many people sacrificed their lives so she could reach her goal ? Did she deserve it ?

How could she live with that on her conscience ?

The answer is : she can’t. She isn’t that strong. She isn’t that positive. She isn’t that perfect.

And destiny (haha) gave her a solution on a silver plate. Not by surprise like a Deus Ex Machina since we knew there would be a counterparty which won’t be too violent because Emma cleared the path. This was an equivalent exchange. THIS IS LIKE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST ! (By the way, why does everyone think TPN’s end was too easy while in FMA, the best manga of all time, the solution to get Alphonse’s body back was in Ed’s hands… LITERALLY !).

Anyway.

The demon offered to lose her memory, thinking she would refuse because she would be alone, separated from her family which is… euh… stupid… I mean… have you seen Your Name ?

People who are meant to be together will find each other.

Moreover, Emma was so relieved because it was solving all her problems : nobody dies, everybody goes to the other world, nobody sacrifices themselves, and the guilt she was afraid to live with ? Gone. I think Emma was also relieved to be like « yes, I have a second chance, now I will live a normal life ». And it was selfish because it seemed like she said « so guys I will send you to another universe I know nothing about after I brought you into this mess but now you will deal with it yourself everyone ! ». That was… a little cowardly ?

And the worst was that every encounter she made, every lesson she learnt, she lost them…

Well, thinking about that…

TROLLHUNTERS !

Trollhunter’s end was… hard. And gave me a bitter sensation since not only we said goodbye to our favorite characters but we also genuinely said goodbye to the show. Even if we wanted to watch the show a second time, it was kinda deleted (along with Anton Yelchin acting…) ?

Yes, it’s hard… but isn’t it ballsy to do a scenario like this ? And we could have expected this, it’s not the first time we talked about time travel in this saga. And for gods sake at the very beginning of the movie there were a lot of things that shouldn’t happen. The train’s crash in New York, the Titans probably crushing people, the bridge being destroyed, and all that jazz… Can you imagine how Jim should have lived with all of this besides everything else he had lost ? And then, Toby died (which affected me more than I imagined).

But it’s not Toby’s death that made Jim want to change everything, it was just the last straw. The last thing that wasn’t supposed to happen. After all, if it was written that Jim was given another chance, if Naru saw that Jim would have to get back, to go aaaaall the way back, there must have a reason, or multiple reasons. Do you think humans could live normally after everything that happened ? Do you think humans and trolls could coexist ? I’m not sure, not after that kind of damage. And Arcadia was destroyed ! The HeartStone, the center of the universe, was destroyed too ! I think even if Toby survived, the end wasn’t that bright…

And the time-travel wasn’t a Deus Ex Machina either because otherwise it would have been a « and then BOUM everything is back to normal and everything is ok » situation, which isn’t…

We don’t know what will happen.

Jim will do everything so it’ll be okay but maybe he will make some mistakes. Vendel may not survive, maybe they will take more time to kill Gunmar, Aaaaaargh may be turn to stone again… we don’t know. And I think everyone in the fandom is pissed because of that. Because we don’t know. And I do understand : this is not the end, not a conclusion, not a great finale, more like the beginning of something we won’t get to see (like a legacy?), which is both great and very very sad for us. I hope Dreamworks will do comics or books…

But also, I doesn’t mean that nothing will be like before. There is a lot of things Jim has no control of. For example, what happened to the extraterrestrials, Jim knew nothing about it so he can’t change a thing. And for the wizards too. And when you think about it, what happens in « Wizards » has to happen. Jim won’t be a troll during that arc but it will happen anyway, it’s supposed to happen because it’s the creation of the Trollhunter, the creation of the Amulet ! And Jim has no idea of what will become because he wasn’t really there.

What is supposed to happen will happen.

Friendship or love, it will happen. Even the relationship between Jim and Blinky, even if Jim isn’t the Trollhunter. OH, SPEAKING OF WHICH.

Choosing Toby as the new Trollhunter is a super idea. Toby will accept his role right away. Toby will love his new destiny. And since he will have Jim’s help, he will be okay. Jim doesn’t want his friends to get traumatized again (I mean it’s cool to learn stuff but do you really need to suffer for that?)(I’M LOOKING AT YOU AGAIN, EDWARD ELRIC), so he will do what he can so things don’t get too heavy. And you know, maybe he want (AND DESERVE) to give a bit away. He probably give the Amulet to Toby because he knew Toby is brave enough to fight even without powers… and because he was tired to bear the Amulet ? Anyway, like I said, everything that is supposed to happen will happen and if Toby isn’t the right Trollhunter, the Amulet won’t choose him.

AH ! And don’t forget that Jim doesn’t need the Amulet to be a Trollhunter ! This is literally what the show wanted to teach us, guys ! If you forget it, it proves that it’s not only the characters who had a reset…

A reset…

Holy guacamole this is exactly like Undertale. This is Undertale’s principle. Jim is Frisk who after taking a Neutral Route wants to do a True Pacifist Route ! This is so cooooool !

Except that, exactly like in The Promised Neverland finale (well, not exactly but like a reversed version of it), Jim decides that everyone forgets everything that happened and take the guilt off their shoulders, as heavy as an armor. He erased everyone’s guilt, except his. That is far from being selfish or cowardly.

It’s the opposite ! These two shows which don’t have a lot in common have finales being negative pictures !

And Jim’s end isn’t perfect either because he still has the world on his shoulders (a little less because he isn’t the Bearer of the Amulet, but still a little more because he knows what happens if it goes wrong).

He is still the Young Atlas because even if the characters in the shows won’t live the same thing, they will still be the characters we knew, the characters we saw growing, the characters as brave and as strong as we used to see : like in Undertale, « despite everything, it’s still you ».

And to everyone who says to me « yeah but it will go wrong because when Merlin shows Jim the future where he isn’t the Trollhunter, it was shit », well : NO.

Jim stays a Trollhunter, he said so ! And I mostly think (since the moment I saw this episode) this all thing was an illusion, not a real future, because Merlin is a real piece of garbage and I was only sad for Douxie when Merlin died (otherwise, I would have celebrate it). And I think Jim knows it too, that it wasn’t real.

By the way, I hope they will find another way to not say « For the glory of Merlin » anymore, I loved the new version of the Amulet in the movie (AND JIM LOVED IT TOO).

All of this just to say that : these endings, even if it’s very frustrating, make sense.

Of course, saying goodbye to so many things I cared about for years make it difficult to assimilate it, but that also means that I really loved it.

And in the end, it showed these two characters flaws, these perfect, pure, way-too-nice characters with too many responsibilities and a huge desire to survive, but who are being selfish for once by taking a clean start.

But they’re doing it with their pockets full of determination… proving how humans they are.

And I really will miss them.

Ready ? Set ? Go !

my observations as a content creator :) warning: it’s long

if you’re reading this, don’t think too deeply about what i wrote - it’s just my analysis of fan blogs and some fandoms (so it’s all from my perspective). do what you want with this information, and feel free to lmk what you think ;)

*i tried to include as many anime-applicable blogs as i could remember*

multifandom reblog blogs (ones who track a tag):

@/allanimanga: lots of original content every day. does not reblog from tag anymore bc most members who had that job are inactive. i’m an admin and i’ve been told not to worry about reblogging from the tag, and just make content. has member privilege abuse from certain users; normally you make content for the blog and you get to reblog your stuff over in a 1:1 ratio, but they will just use the blog to promote themselves without contributing. it’s really sad but there’s nothing we can do bc most of the time it’s an admin.

@/animacia: was debating whether or not to put this one. reblogs mainstream anime (sailor moon, studio ghibli) and has a tag, but the tag itself does not seem to be actively used as the most recent post can see tagged for this blog dates back to june 2019 (more than a year ago). it’s an active blog regardless of slow tag activity.

@/animationsource: active, but very picky? idk man they either do or don’t reblog your stuff. it’s a hit or miss with them. seems to have member privilege abuse/preference (explained up there). not too sure if they have a queue or just reblog sporadically.

@/anisource: active. seems to run on a large, backlogged queue bc their tag is full of stuff that has yet to be reblogged. edits will probably take a while to be reblogged, but they’ll eventually get there!

@/dailyanime: new blog, but from what i’ve experienced, they will queue it, and your post will be reblogged in 1-3 days (it probably depends on how much is in their queue).

@/fyanimegifs: will reblog your stuff, but they have a very slow queue.

@/graphicsources: not really active; spontaneous at best. don’t count on them to reblog your stuff.

@/fyeahshoujo: not really active, but not completely inactive.

@/fysportsanime & @/sportsanimedaily: active. seems to have a backlogged queue, but just wait and you’ll be reblogged! it will take some time because there are lots of posts.

@/animangascenery & @/otomokatsuhiro (#oldanimeedit - changes url from time to time? that’s why i included the tag they track): inactive unless a member looks at the tag. in that case, they will most likely reblog the tagged post. typically mass reblogs/queues from the tag every once in a while.

@/bbelcher & @/fyeahmovies: will reblog ghibli and makoto shinkai stuff. bonus points if you have added a text description to gifs. 80% dependable.

@/filmgifs, @/filmtv, @/stream, @/movie-gifs, etc. (basically big reblog fansites that aren’t anime-oriented, but do reblog mainstream anime movies): 90% chance they will not reblog anything from you if there is no text description. add text descriptions to studio ghibli/makoto shinkai film gifs and make it pretty! use text gradients!! that will increase your chances of being reblogged by them. they don’t reblog seasonal anime.

a note: many creators use tags as a way of reaching a broader audience. it's really helpful for smaller blogs who would like to share their content to others, but do not have the means/numbers to do so. just bc some people don't utilize tags to their full potential, it doesn't mean it isn't useful, so pls don’t try to act superior to those who want more exposure. everyone deserves a chance at getting the attention they deserve for their hard work!

@/ghiblisdaily: great. amazing. i love them!! will reblog from you 99.9% of the time. probably the most reliable ghibli blog as of right now. uploads original content

@/fyghibli: used to be good at reblogging from tag, but has gone kind of inactive. i think they’re becoming more active again, but it’s very sporadic.

@/kikisdeliveryservices: they track a variety of studio ghibli related tags, and they do reblog a lot, but i don’t think they’re as consistent as ghiblisdaily. lots of original content.

@/oh-totoro: not really active, but when they are (and they reblog from you), your activity skyrockets.

@/dailyghibli: not active.

@/daily-ghibli: sometimes active, a little wishy-washy. they seem to be reblogging a little bit more consistently now?

@/princessghibli: not active, but reblogs here and there.

@/ghibligif: a new blog, but decently active. will reblog post from their tracked tag within a day. lots of original content.

main point: there are many studio ghibli blogs (wayyyy more than i’ve listed here), but only around 3-4 active ones. choose your tags with what you think will give you the best exposure bc if you have too much, tumblr will go “fuck you” and not show your post at all :)

random anime fandoms:

i’ll really only be including ones i’m in, or know a bit about.

haikyuu, bnha, kny, yoi: healthy and very active. content for these fandoms do well even if they’re not in season. has multiple active fan blogs (except for yoi tho - they’re all inactive for the most part).

noragami, ohshc, ons, snk, tg, swnku: active fandoms. edits will do moderately well bc most people have seen these.

popular sports anime (knb, free, dna, tsurune? idk i don’t watch much sports anime): they do okay. i rarely see any new sports anime edits beside haikyuu, but people do love their sports anime. has active sports fan blogs.

pokemon & sailor moon: old but gold. lots of people love these anime bc it’s part of their childhood. still very popular amongst tumblr users.

violet evergarden: does moderately well. @/fyeahvioletevergarden will reblog your stuff if you choose to tag them (big boost)! with the new movie coming up soon, there may be a resurgence in activity, but the most recent movie did not have much content made for it, so that hope may be crushed.

tpn: not very active, but with the new season coming up soon, there will be a resurgence in activity.

ditf: kind of dead, but lots of people love zero two. edits do moderately well.

sao: dead. absolutely dead. i thought there would be some activity bc it’s in season right now, but no, it’s a dead fandom. low key sao sucks tho. idek where the plot is going; i’m just hoping for an end.

hxh, one piece, fma, code geass: i’m not in it, but i think they do okay bc they have a large following, just not as well as haikyuu or bnha (but they’re still very popular). it depends on your blog demographic tho.

mp100, opm, bsd, given: kind of medium-tier fandoms. not as prevalent as haikyuu or bnha, but there are still edits being made for these anime. they don’t really have any active fan blogs (besides given i think) bc none of them are airing rn.

makoto shinkai & studio ghibli films: they do great! everybody loves good scenery, and the films are very well known and loved by all!

some seasonal anime (spring/summer 2020)

fruits basket: well this reboot blew up and overshadowed everything in it’s path. tbh only edits posted on the first day of the new episode do well. it’s a very competitive fandom for creators.

kaguya sama love is war: first season was good, edits did well. second season drifted off into the shadow of fruits basket. relatively obscure fandom for how popular it is amongst people (non-creators).

tower of god: popular with creators. now that it’s not airing, no one gifs it. respective fan blog is doing its best with content from the manhwa.

fugou keiji balance unlimited: people were simping even before the first ep came out, and then the anime went on hiatus for a few months. now that it’s started to air again, everyone acts like it never existed in the first place... was a good fandom up until the hiatus and now it will probably take a while to recover.

god of high school: nonexistent even tho it’s a popular pick this season (summer 2020). in the shadow of fruits basket.

main point: if there’s any seasonal anime paired up against fruits basket at the same time, fruits basket will win and the former will be left in the dust.

A bunch of people liked the post where I asked if anyone was interested in my criticism for chapter 180 and @wannabe-everythings said they wanted to read it so! Here we go I guess! I’m just posting it as it was, sorry if it’s a little messy.

Under the cut to not spam anyone who liked the chapter with useless negativity.

Ok this is the last post I’ll make about chapter 180 because I’m tired of my own negativity but I really feel like I need to clear things up:

I’m not upset because Emma has lost her memories. I mean yes ofc it’s a bit sad but I’m sure she’ll manage to reunite with her family and remember her past (or more likely not but even in that case she’ll create new memories) because their love is just that strong™

What I’m saying is that you could have had all of this, plot twist, heartbreaking chapter and everything without making Emma go for that decisions? Just have Scribbles be a jerk end not respecting the agreement, he ended up being one anyway.

I’m sorry, Emma lying to her family to me sounds so wrong character arc wise? I’ve never been let down by this series and I know it’s just a small thing (I don’t even think anybody besides from me cares), but to me it was very relevant?? I think there’s two major things about this that bother me tons:

Emma doesn’t lie.

Emma doesn’t believe in sacrifice.

I don’t know but I find these two pretty much key points of the character?

Emma doesn’t lie. Emma has learnt that lying is wrong. She has made her mistakes in the past (friendly reminder that in the manga she’s the one who came up with the idea of lying to Gilda and Don in the first arc), because she’s flawed, as all well written characters are! But she has learned from her mistakes, and that’s what makes her good. She’s not Norman you know? Norman has been lying since the start, and untill the most recent chapters he had never accepted that his lies were wrong. But she’s different.

Emma doesn’t believe in sacrifice. She just does not. It’s been basically her most important trait since day one. She doesn’t believe in no-exit-scenarios. It made her look naïve in chapter 4, and as soon as you realize there isn’t, in fact, a single thing about her that is naïve, made her look freaking amazing. She believes that the world can be made a better place, that her family can be happy (note: she’s part of her family!!) and that they have the power to do that. They may struggle, but they have the power to be happy at the end. That’s what all the fight has been for.

Ok now… Going from this to actively choosing to sacrifice herself????? I don’t know that doesn’t sound quite right… Emma has believed through the whole thing that when there’s no escape route, you have to create one yourself. She believed they could have escaped from GF and so they did. She believed they could find a safe place to live and so they did. She believed the GP suffering could end and so they did. She believed demons were sensible begins, she was compassionate enough to sympathize towards the race that has been eating her kind for hundreds of years, and believed they deserved to be saved, and so they did. She believed every single one from her plantation had to be prevented from being eaten, and so they did. Was it easy? Of course not! They struggled and lost many things. But still they did it. She did it. She granted happiness without compromises, because she believed in it. And now you’re telling me Demon god went “you have to sacrifice yourself” and she accepted just like that?

Also… Emma has self conscience. She isn’t vain, but she recognises her self worth as much as she does of her limits. She understands that she’s a person worth of living happily as much as any other person. It’s not a selfish thought, and honestly it’s a quality I really look up to!!!

Again, she’s different from Norman and Ray. I don’t know it makes me feel low-key sick to think about all the talks that Emma made to both Ray and Norman about how sacrifice wasn’t the answer? Doesn’t it all sound just meaningless and empty when she decided to take that path herself?

Ok also… She’s in no way dumb, she knows sacrificing herself is another way of precluding her family’s happiness forever. She understands she’s just as important for them as they’re for her. Then I don’t get why she would chose that?

Not to be sentimental™ and political™ and stuff but like… That’s what I like about tpn? I mean, how it kept sustaining the themes of hope, and to be able to build a happier future for yourself. That’s the main reason I had found this different from any other piece of media. There’s so many cynical, dark, the-world-sucks-humankind-sucks-and-there’s-nothing-you-can-do-about-it medias already! But medias ment for adults that display so neatly a character that no matter how cruel the world she lives in, how unfair and ruthless it is, keeps fighting for her family’s and her own happiness? That’s amazing!!! And quite unheard of as well.

What am I left with now? She had to sacrifice something about herself. She decided to give up on her own happiness. That’s sad indeed, but… Also pretty unoriginal? I mean, I’ve already read this story.

The only thing I can see is Emma deciding to sacrifice herself only because she was *sure* she would have been able to reunite with her family because she believes in the power of their love™ and stuff. But still that doesn’t make up for how she lied and nnghh… I still find it terribly ooc…

Tl;dr: Emma deserves happiness for herself 😭😭😭

I just hope she can be happy with her family again because that’s what she deserves.

That being said, basically my sole consolation about this is that someone else was able to enjoy the chapter, even when I disliked it! If you’ve got any criticisms / think there’s things I haven’t considered please feel free to discuss them with me, because I’m trying really hard to find a way this makes sense for Emma’s character but right now I’m miserably failing 😔

TPN S02E09 - Initial Thoughts (anime-only)

[ Reaction video w/ captions/subs ] we collectively have a breakdown about the pen, please enjoy it pff-

... hmmm... yeah I... ain’t feeling it. I think my tpn feelings overall are carrying this more than anything pff. I didn’t hate it, it was just...... mediocre... like if this wasn’t tpn, I probably would have dropped it at this point.

BUT IT IS TPN SO LET’S GIVE SOME THOUGHTS.

. Random thoughts I don’t want to re-arrange

when Emma was like “share your pain with us!!”, I liked how Norman turned to Ray like “Ray. help. tell her I’m right” kind of like Ray did in s1 pfff-

Norman cried the words he didn’t allow himself to say in s1 :( I’M EMOTIONAL. it might not be the icing on the cake execution wise but GOD MY HEART. And knowing he’s going to die to it’s just- (well not if the pen has something to say about it but more about that later)

where- wheres my trio hug :((( RAY HUG THE CHILD NOW

it’s interesting that while Emma got the entire emotional speech spotlight, only Ray got a reaction shot to “I won’t live long”?? equivalent.... exchange...?

I thought Norman had a seizure when he broke down in front of Emma and Ray and I kinda wish he had because while it’s good to have him say it outright (a win for communicationnn), imagine THE ANGST. “I want to live with yo- *coughs up fountains of blood*”.

So. yknow that hideout Cislo or Vincent referenced when talking to Emma and Ray. Yknow where Norman hid the children they stole from farms, making it look like demons did it? ... w-what about them? will we see them? Are they getting left behind? it would have worked for Norman’s plan, since all they had to do was stay put and wait for demons to be yeeted. But now... he’d have to take them all too. But... I doubt we’re gonna introduce a bunch of new designs and characters? Or are we? Who knows. I don’t. I have unreasonably amount of protecc feelings for those children I’ve never even seen haha- WHERE ARE THEY. I mean... the plan rn is to immediately use the gate right? or is the plan to eradicte the GF farm staff and higher ups? I guess if thats the plan it might work. Or I guess the plan is to save Phil for now???

the idea of Sonju just... slicing his arm and throwing it at demons in a loop sounds so funny to me please someone make that.

I liked that Mujika turned to the lambda kids after giving a cup to the demon children but then we didn’t see their reaction or anything and then it cuts to the temple??? that was weird. was there sth missing there? confusion.

I also like Isabella remarking "[a radio] was supposed to be there" regarding the shelter, because it further heavily implies they know of the shelters and just let them be. Which further confirms that they should have just reframed the shelter and had the kids escape from it quickly but oH WELL.

I really liked demon Emma apologizing and Norman's reaction to that. it was a sweet little moment and like, the realization of apologizing for something that she didn't do but is aware of and all that. Cycle of hatred and all that shiz hell ye. Ik the anime won't rly delve into that but I kind of relish in the angst potential of the village - sure it was undone but some were still eaten and died and transforming people back won't bring those back. So, that’s some hella terrifying implications for families; and I'm assuming Norman is aware of those so. guilt time! not that he wasn't aware it was bad but yeah- I teared up at that moment :<<

I feel like this season really does its best when it’s doing the whole two worlds/species angle. Mujika and Sonju, the village, demon and human Emma... all that stuff.

I wish we had gotten more time (god this is really the season’s downfall) thought to see Vylk talk to the GF kids more often. it’s implied he told them not to hang out there before but I would have liked to have him show up a few more times before that but yeah. Runtime very RIP.

I also feel like CW is bending over backwards to put cliffhangers at the end of episodes. that was already a problem in s1 when they had Phil come in when Don and Gilda were in Isabella's room. it was obvious it'd be a copout but they still did it. I'm just wondering why we had to have Vincent disagree with the group to this extend (and if the shock value might play a part in that). we have 2 more episodes, why are they introducing more plot threads? Just streamline it you dofuses. I just don't know what good can come of it unless it's like an ultra big brain move to help them?? (and then we're back with the forcing cliffhangers thing) - if it's actual conflict, this'll just make things more confusing and clustered, and we don't have time for that right now imo. But who knows maybe it plays into something I just don't understand yet and it'll work out somehow

. Animation flow kinda dead.

I felt like this episode was kind of... awkwardly executed whenever something that was a slightly dynamic movement happened?

The whole bit while Emma is walking up to Norman could have been better, but it’s passable, except that a lot is spelled out for us.

But then she takes his hand really weirdly in a far away shot with bad inbetween timing?? what is that haha-

Or him collapsing is cut really weirdly. you barely really see it, you just kinda piece it together from Emma’s reaction and her catching him.

Most facial expressions are good though, which is arguably the more important part in this scene. I feel like a better execution just would have elevated it even more.

The only one I felt was really awkward in its entirety is Barbara’s scene with the children demons. I felt like that was in particular kind of stiff and the cut between the child and her was too sudden and felt jarring. TPN anime doesn’t really do that sort of stuff a lot, so imo it’s kind of “??” when they do it. With Norman it was too, but that at least had a good transition over to it (with bg and fg panning) and nice animation. Barbara’s just kind of switched. Tbh don’t switch it out, and as the child screams, switch over to her facial expression as her own voice fades into the scream? I think that would have done it too and also be low effort.

I think it’s moreso the flow of the shots than the actual shots though? it’s a bit too fast paced and sometimes missing inbetweens (like the wild demon eating sonju’s hand is literally just 2 frames) - it’s very weird. It’s jarring, but I can’t really explain why.

I’m sorry for the staff, I’m sure the production hasn’t been easy. maybe with the bluray release we’ll get some updated animations/inbetweens.

Some appreciation though:

as mentioned, most of the facial expressions, even if the body language was a bit stiff.

the cut from the trio talking to the eye-transition of the demon and the following breath animation looked nice. Also his arm regenerating!

they didn’t have to show Vylk’s arm regenerating casually while they’re talking but they did.

If only I cared about you guys. Hahhh it’s just... introducing characters so close to the end is just. A mess. A recipe for disaster.

Where has the anime’s “show off the younger kids” angle gone? I thought they were always pretty good at that. but they haven’t really contributed anything since the whole tidbit about the older children always eating less for them. And even then it was just Lani and Thoma.

Potentially, what segments we saw in the shelter will come back for the GF raid thematically but I’m just... EH?

at this point, just stick a syringe part at the end of the stick and just inject it and it’s gonna solve everything probably.

I just don’t understand why that needed to happen. Assuming they go to the human world, it’d be perfectly acceptable for me for medicine to be so advanced that it’d be able to like, lessen their symptoms and significantly improve their lifespan.

Don’t just... REMOVE their struggles. It’s okay to not be normal and cured. it’s okay for their lives to be impacted by it going forward. In fact, I’d much prefer that.

(added in later) OH wait they literally spell out why the cure being in the pen is meaningful - because it opens up a path where they can live through not having annihilated all the demons - it's essentially the moral "reward" for not killing them. Since they probably wouldn't have gotten it if they did that. I still think it wasn't needed and the blueprint on its own would suffice for another pen-convinience moment but I kind of get what they're going for, I just don't think it's worth it . In their case, going to the human world (while they don't know it) means having more medical expertise at their disposal which they can then use to survive. UNLESS they're actually not welcome over there and have to hide or something, in that case... that might be hard, true. I guess I'll come back to think about this once it's over. For now, it feels kind of unearned and it wouldn’t even have to be this way in my eyes which makes it somewhat worse.

But good, let’s say in-universe you need it NOW, then at least don’t put??? the medicine??? recipe??? INTO the hologram.

What if they just checked the GF blueprint and Norman goes “hey, Vincent... do you think this [database/archive room] could have some data on our experiments?” - Norman said he tried to develop a drug to help them but the supporters who had that data were purged. but... they had Smee to help them too. But SOMEHOW, a dude from 15 years ago just HAS the cure??? (at least let Norman develop it himself and have the data be just THE DATA and not the recipe).

It might still check out somewhat??

15+ years ago, James Ratri was assumingly still the gatekeeper since the switch to Peter seems somewhat recent considering his big "era of James has ended" speech.

I guess the implication is that just like Smee => Krone => Norman, a supporter all that time ago gave random person the pen when they escaped.

When Vylk found him, he also had just the data medium of the pen (not the entire pen), so maybe the farm thought they eliminated it and that’s why they didn’t change their methods to not work with those drugs anymore? It's still a bit curious that their experimentation hasn't changed at all in 15 years but maybe that's because they keep killing the smart people instead of making them scientists to research for them :D

Somewhere since those 15 years, Smee gave Krone the pen (probably a few years before she got to GF?), which means that at that point the gate the keyword "future" sent them to, was still in tact when Smee gave Krone the pen. Maybe WM wasn't discovered yet at that point?

then WM got discovered, James was chased. He made that phonecall update and was probably eventually killed, along with the human location (and likely bunkers since they knew a radio was supposed to be there, begs the question why they didn't remove it) being discovered (the one with the future keyword) and the gate there being destroyed.

The problem is just that it can make sense when you think about it for way too long and assume things in good-faith, but it still feels unearned.

Maybe I would care more or this would feel a little more earned if we knew ANYTHING about that person? They seemed fairly young, so it’s probably not Minerva/James Ratri. The “hope” talk reminded me of the book in the shelter, but I’m not sure if that checks out either? The cookies were rotten but not completely. I know cookies hold out relatively long, but would they rly not be completely rotten after 15 years? I MEAN. Maybe not. Who knows. I tried to google it but didn’t find anything.

But anyway. That tidbit is going into my “shelter kids OC project” I guess.

But even if the worldbuilding makes sense, I think the data set in itself makes little sense?? How did they find that pen part? Did a supporter give it to them? Why do they have the cure? Clearly their group of escapees wasn’t doing too hot (#help) and they seemed relatively young too so they probably couldn’t have worked in the farm.

Were the shelter escapees lambda escapees? but if that was the case, wouldn’t the WM group have secured the cure information more properly than in just one pen (maybe it was and those were just destroyed, to be fair) - it’s just WEIRD to put the cure for Lambda experiments on the same blueprint as the GF layout??? that makes so little sense.

Plus, why would you send them to GF, when it’s so secured and all that, and not just send them to the human support place our GF kids were sent with the “future” keyword, which had a gate. Maybe it didn’t exist 15 years ago (that the humans had control over it, that is), but even then it seems weird to me to imply to send them to GF instead of one of the other gates that existed. I mean. The “future” location’s gate wasn’t destroyed when Krone got the pen right?

I’m guessing maybe it was meant as help for escaping? But then again, why the cure? I guess if they met lambda experiments? I’m just confused.

Also: do we just accept that the layout of GUARDS and SECURITY MEASURES has not changed in 15 years???

*sigh* welp. Still looking forward to seeing some stuff with Isabella hopefully. Time... is not on their side and it shows. Neither run-time wise nor production wise.

TPN ch168

(spoilers that make me nervous)

If I have to thank Peter for anything, it will be for reminding me how busy Norman has been the past two years since he left Grace Field..

..like wow. Our boy really has made quite the impact in the demon world. But cmon now, “pretty impressive for a child raised to be food.” Bro, if that’s how you feel then you’re the one who got ambushed and taken over by a bunch of prime rib steaks. Trust me, you’re not smarter than all these kids. I mean, you turned the tables real quick and I’m not at all happy about it, but still. Give them more credit.

So yeah, this is where my nerves start to shake. The kids have no trouble dealing with demons, but now they’re surrounded by other people. Other humans. My first thoughts while reading this chapter was “damn, how will they get away? they never killed another human being before.” As I’m writing this out, however, I realize they don’t necessarily have to full on kill them. They could just wound them and make a run for it.. but the whole scene just makes me nervous. And if the whole human vs human idea wasn’t bad enough..

.. the demons from earlier are now awake (again, why they didn’t kill them in the first place is beyond me, but i can imagine it was probably emma’s idea there). Oh, and Peter told them about how Sonju & Musica (mujika? which is correct idk) are sentenced to death. The kids already have so much to worry about, so let’s add one more thing! Yeah, that’s gonna totally mess up Emma’s head. Just the thought alone is sending her into a panic mode. I don’t even want to imagine what will happen to her psyche if such an event does occur.. oh my poor girl. I know how badly she wants to save everyone, especially her friends, but it’s becoming so so stressful.

And if Peter’s idea is achieved, then it’ll be impossible. Those kids currently at all the premium farms will most likely be killed. Any kid born afterwards won’t have anything remotely close to a life. No name, no lanuage, and no will to live. god this is getting depressing.

Um yeah moving on, if there’s any good news to come from this chapter, then Vincent still has the enemy’s system on lock and he’s being incredibly fearless, so kudos to him. too bad it gets him shot at a couple pages later (also, we don’t see Hayato tied up at all even though he was with Vincent & the others at the start, so can I please just assume that he quickly ran away? because he is insanely fast? either that or the panels just chose not to show him)

But even before that, just.. Norman. Aahh, you good boy. I’m glad to see that despite the dark and cold path he had to take in order to accomplish what Peter stated at the very start of the chapter, that Norman still has a heart of gold and wishes to live on with each one of his friends. Witness the power of Emma’s influence! It reminds me of that one moment with Ray back at Goldy Pond as well.

These boys used to be so fixated on their own survival in the past to a degree anyways (Ray at Grace Field / Norman at Lambda) but now they’re both like “nah, all or nothing.” They’ve grown to care so much about others over the years that it warms my heart. So thank you Emma. I’ll always be proud of them for that.

No no no. Wrong. Incorrect. If that wasn’t bad enough, he goes on to say such things like:

“If there were no farms, if the Ratri clan wasn’t around.. you wouldn’t have been born. You were fed well. Raised and provided for. Yet you rose against those farms.. escaped.. and now you come back to destroy us. How foolish and disrespectful.”

Like sir, relax. Don’t act all high and mighty thinking you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to these kids. Hell, Ray spent 12 years of his life being miserable because of your clan, believeing that his life was cursed. If he doesn’t respect you, then I promise you, no other kid will. Oh, and especially not Oliver!

As much as this chapter had me shooketh, we do have one saving grace! “Father.” Ooh, that is such a powerful word. Peter, your men killed the one man Oliver thought of as a true father, so I pray our wonderful young man gets his revenge.

here come the feels, ahh rip Lucas, still not over that

But yes, the whole human vs human thing.. still a major concern. And Isabella, whatever she’s up to right now. And Phil.. wherever he’s at.

To see her smile

Since I am now TPN trash...why not write something for it??

Pairing: Emma and Ray

He had always taken an interest in her ever since they were kids. He remembers the day that Mama brought her to the house, she was only three then.

He remembered her coming up to him, bright eyes and a cheeky smile and then hugging as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

She was loud and happy all the time, just like the other kids but something about her made the days feel warmer and sun shine brighter.

And as the grew older, they grew closer. It wasn’t only because they were the oldest of the lot and when Norman came they were the dynamic trio that spent every moment together because that’s all they could do.

She was perfect. Life was perfect but he did dread the day that one of them would get adopted and leave forever.

And then he discovered the secret. It tourmented him as the horror of what laid beyond the gate had in store of all of the children.

Her smile changed that day. Instead he saw her as a beacon of light. A savior. Someone who he need to save at the expense of his own life. What ever happened, she had to live.

He couldn’t tell you why he became so drawn to her, even more than already. But all he knew was he wanted a future where she could be happy with no doubts.

And as the years past and the fire burned the house, she still smiled on. No matter how many creatures chased her or how many hits and winds she collected, that cheeky grin he saw all those years ago was still surfaced.

But now she wasn’t smiling. She was filled with grief and pain as she huddled in the corner of another hideout they had found. During her quiet sobs and shakes he figured it out.

“Emma.” He whispered and sat next to her.

In all the books he had read and stories in his mind, love was never there except for his family.

He never knew about the love that you could have for one person. A deeper affection and admiration. The way his heart fluttered even when she was coated in dirt and blood was an odd give away of his feelings.

He placed a hand on her shoulder and lifted her chin with the other. Her dazzling eyes were muted as tears fell like a rain cloud. The numbers on her neck left a bitter taste in his mouth but there was nothing to be done if that.

“It’s going to be okay.” He reasoned and it didn’t matter if he believed it or not, all Ray ever wanted was to keep her smiling.

She nodded but squeaked out a whine as she took deep breaths.

There was a comfortable silence between them as he rested his forehead against hers, his bangs tickling her cheek but she didn’t mind.

“I promise that we will her through this Emma. You will smile again, I’m certain.” He said and with an uncertain path, he leaned forward and brushed their lips together.

It was a simple peck, nothing too extreme, just testing out the waters. His eyes closed before he pulled away, he’s battled and killed demons before yet this was the most terrifying thing he has ever done.

Slowly he opened them. Grazing over her side eyes until he looked at her lips. A small smile was on her face and he thought he was going to forget how to breathe. She leaned forward and returned the gesture, quick and soft just like his.

He didn’t know what to do next but she took his hands in hers and kissed his knuckles which currently were wrapped in bandages.

“Our battle isn’t over yet Ray, but we are gonna do this together.” She whispered.

His own lips turned to a small grin as he hummed in agreement.

He knew that their entire lives were fragmented and probably shorter than most but the unconditional love and trust the two shared was enough for him.

They rested their backs against the wall and leaned their heads against one another. Using a blanket, they covered their bodies to try and get some sleep in. Their fingers intertwined and their hearts as one, the two teens vowed to fight for the other ones happiness not knowing that this right here was the happiest they had been in a long time.

I hope you enjoyed! I’m a sucker for the chemistry between Emma and Ray and even if they don’t end up together you know that they care and love each other very much.
