Visiting PVD for the first time ever in November, where should I have dinner
oh shit! you are genuinely very lucky. for all my produce shit talking, i think RI is like a secret american paradise for food lovers. this place is genuinely fucking nuts and has a little bit of everything.
if you get out of the city (or maybe they have one downtown idk) you should go to olneyville new york system restaurant (the name is insane i know) and order a "hot wiener all the way" to enjoy the uniquely rhode island experience of having an extremely hairy italian man line up like 10 hot dog buns on his arm and slap a bunch of meat sauce everywhere. i have not had this experience yet. but i want to.
east side pockets has great gyros and falafel but the gyros come with like. franks red hot on them for some reason. so. dont get that and youll have a great meal.
go to literally any pizza restaurant and you will have the best pizza of your entire life. bar none. unquestioned. im partial to rosa mia's but they're a little outside the city.
there's also that conceptually nuts restaurant we went to lately that is a twin peaks themed BBQ restaurant (?????????) which was really good and has a guyanese takeaway place right next to it ive been meaning to try called "pan a day takeaway". it looks awesome lol
eat well and irresponsibly!!!! theres so much good shit

I didn't not enjoy the bear s2, but 2 fucked up things that bother me a lot: 1. Ebra, and sort of relatedly, 2. the show's complete inability to take an actual fucking position on the exploitative nature of the service industry.
on 1: the writing sets Ebra up with the beginnings of an arc but doesn't go anywhere with it until ep 8. there are these gestures towards filling in a backstory (Ebra's clumsiness, the roughshod nature of his skill or lack thereof, his inability to recalibrate in this new environment, his initial dread of uniforms after being fine w the new chef blues Syd and Carmy instituted in s1), which are subsequently abandoned and rendered meaningless in favour of his contrite, apologetic reappearance in ep 8, where he is the one narratively required to make amends for not being up to the task.
for his failings (of not being able to handle navigating institutionalised education bc of war trauma? bc of it being in a language he's still struggling to learn? bc of his age? the condition of his body? his background? we don't fucking know. it doesn't actually matter. we just know he bombed and let Tina (everyone) down), he's relegated to the drive through window. the implication: get w the program or get left in the dust. and why not? they gave him all the necessary resources, the opportunities to /better/ himself, so of course it's on him he's no longer qualified for meat prep, in that fancy new kitchen w equipment that actually fucking works.
Tina made it, right? good fortune is for those who are prepared to receive it. not our (Syd/Carmy/Sugar, the viewers at home sitting proxy, as always, in the position of management) problem Ebra couldn't hack it. it is what it is. some ppl can't deal w things changing. sad. they oughta be grateful there's a position left for them. allowances are being made, after all. generosity and sentiment on the strength of shared history.
that's the viewpoint suggested by the writing in the show.
and moving onto point 2, bc this, too - not hacking it, his perpetual self-sabotage, self-victimisation - was gonna be Richie's fate. until he goes on his own journey of self-actualization accomplished via the Cinderella magic of... internalizing the ethos of artisinal servitude.
yes, the form of labour is regimented and punishing and fucking abusive, but messy ppl who need some semblance of order and purpose in their live are predisposed to excuse and even justify the worst of its excesses bc yeah! their lives can be made materially and psychologically better in certain ways, for having taken a sip of the koolaid. they can, for once, be doing work they personally find meaningful. they can even thrive.
so who's to say if it's actually good or bad! plus don't the middle aged middle classed high school teachers of middle america deserve some luxury? a treat! (as if that's the average clientele of such restaurants bffr!!!!)
is that not the takeaway from these 2 seasons? we are rooting for Syd and Carmy. we are rooting for the survival, nay, success of their fine dining establishment. we want them to beat the odds! we want them to turn this failing shithole filled w sad broken people into a high performing marvel of the American hospitality industry where everyone strives for excellence in all things, bringing only their best selves to work blah blah blah
like, if I were to use the vocabulary reserved for descriptions of enemy states, Richie's turnaround literally reads as the success story of getting shipped out for re-education: a recalcitrant, disruptive element undergoes ideological and thought reform through labour, and returns a model worker fully committed to the leadership and advancement of the cause.
what is the cause? The Bear, obvsly. but more generally, something to do w the virtue of self-mastery, self-perfection, self-improvement, whatever. bc it seems to me so many of the conflicts explored in the show come back to this.
in Richie's arc, compliance within a system where the power a customer or head-chef holds over you might as well be boundless becomes sanctified, as servility is elevated to a kind of craft. even an art form. his initial unhappiness about being put in such a relationship, and to feel demeaned by it, is framed as an attitude problem of insufficient self-regard - if you loved yourself enough, had enough confidence in yourself and yr skills, you wouldn't bristle at this level of labour discipline, or interpret conforming to such standards as harsh.
and the thing is, a big part of the hype the show got last season was for its honest clear-eyed depiction of the restaurant industry. it was praised for being thoughtful about grief, and various kinds of trauma, and how toxic working environments are created and fed by addiction and cycles of abuse. like Truffaut who quipped there are no antiwar movies that don't glamourize war, it's easy for depictions of the brutal pace of modern high-end dining to turn into competence porn.
how the writing, particularly by season 2 and Richie's arc makes me want to interpret the way the show makes sense of this tension is by leaning into psychosocial explanations. ultimately, individuals are the vector by which dysfunction spreads, dysfunction instilled in them by other people. the role the system plays recedes ever more into the background. there's a displacement. in the final analysis, the problem is not the problem, the problem is not being an adequate-to-the-problem problem solver.
the consensus after season 2 is that Carmy needs to work on himself. (and if they're being generous, of course Sydney and the others too) everyone needs sooooo much therapy, goes the common-sense wisdom about almost everything. I mean, yeah, no shit, Carmy is so fucked up. but I don't know what kind of abrafuckingcadabra therapy ppl know about that would make the pressures of keeping your head above water not soul destroying, like, in this economy??
it is almost too funny, that little paean to service that compares hospitality and hospitals. the health industry and precarious service work, two features of the economy that are def not in crisis nor create crises.
and there's every indication we are meant to read him straight, more or less like honestly, now that I'm thinking about it more, it makes me want to puke.
there's the part about training ppl not to see their exploitation, but even welcome it, finding self-worth in the very adherence to this hierarchy. there's the pure distilled ideology of this whole... upgrade being seen as progress, as unquestioned, inevitable, of course that's what Carmy (and Syd) want and have always wanted.
it's not quite enough to make me stop watching. I'm reserving full judgement until after season 3 (feels like something I said last yr, abt s2)
bc we don't know about the other shoe yet, after ep 10. what happens to Richie? what if he lets the koolaid curdle, what if it grows sour and mouldy. maybe Marcus rejects this non choice! and quits! maybe the restaurant fails! maybe the triumph of their (Syd, Carmy, The Bear) commercial success is shown to be achieved through the thorough and continual destruction of other kinds of value, and no one is actually made richer for it. maybe the contradictions won't be reduced to the faintest shadows of narrative handwringing - but at what cost! oh look where they came out of, how could it have been otherwise!
or maybe we'll get more of this thoughtful plausible deniability chaos that pretends nuance is about showing something tragically ironic [every second counts amirite] absent any possibility of refusal and that somehow the power of interpretation is in the hands of the viewers, who are free to evaluate as they see fit all sorts of claims all given equal weight and reality, but who are still left, at the end of everything, only with ennobled suffering.

Dining Virtually
The way we purchase food from restaurants has changed considerably in recent years. The standard dine-in or takeaway, and sometimes a pizza delivered to your doorstep, have been rattled by the arrival of third-party delivery services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub, and more. DoorDash leads the roster with 66% market share.
But it is not just delivery that has changed the landscape, all fueled by mobile apps and digital marketing. Restaurants have added their own twist to the saga with virtual brands. These show up on apps as nearby restaurants, but you would be hard-pressed to find them in real life, because there are no signs announcing their presence.
No, they exist only online and in a kitchen known by a different name.
Many of the big chains are doing it, like Chili’s (Brinker), Hooters, Outback (Bloomin’ Brands), Applebee’s, and Wingstop. Even children’s party palace Chuck E. Cheese does it, with their Pasqually’s Pizza.Imagine learning the next day that the pizza you had delivered last night actually came from Chuck E. Cheese. Yuck.
Denny’s has also ventured into these waters with Banda Burrito, The Melt Down, and The Burger Den. And now it has inked a deal with third-party facilitator The Franklin Group to expand these concepts across 250 franchisees in the Denny’s system.
Tumblr media
To be fair, there has been a small shakeout in the virtual brands sector of late, with Red Robin terminating its concepts and sticking solely to its main brand. But that is not unusual in any industry for weaker concepts to be shed, and new ones to replace them.
Virtual brands allow a restaurant chain to make better use of under-utilized facilities, especially during parts of the day in which customer traffic may sag. Having complementary products can help fill out those peaks and valleys.
They also allow restaurants to test new menu items or concepts, as well as serve different markets. But in many cases, the product is pretty much the same as if you went to Hooters or Chili’s. It’s just in a different package.
Some might consider it disingenuous, even misleading, for a restaurant to employ virtual brands. Essentially, it could be considered as smoke and mirrors, and perhaps problematic if different pricing strategies are used for identical products. Imagine if CPG (consumer packaged goods) companies did that. There would be riots.
The range of food items falling into the virtual brands category is somewhat narrow, typically limited to pizzas, burgers, and wings. These travel well with readily available packaging. While the courier services will attempt to deliver just about anything—including menu items that might seep, spill, or swish around en route—it just makes matters easier if there is some standardization.
Virtual brands are not to be confused with ghost kitchens, although there could be an overlap in some instances. Essentially, a ghost kitchen is a commercial-grade kitchen at which multiple brands are prepared on shared facilities. There are variations on this as well, such as the one in Atlanta owned by Inspire Brands, and featuring the brands under its corporate umbrella, including Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Jimmy John’s, and Sonic Drive-In. DoorDash also owns ghost kitchens, which it typically leases to local mom-and-pop operators, and with whom it has exclusive delivery rights.
And if you are wondering, a food hall is kind of the same concept as a ghost kitchen, with shared food prep facilities among numerous small food service operators. It’s just that it is all visible to consumers.
Meanwhile, virtual brands continue to proliferate, much like craft breweries. They satisfy our urgings for something different. In the case of Denny’s and its burrito, burger, and patty melt brands, the food may be much the same as what you would order off the standard menu, but at least it sounds different.
You just didn’t know it. Until now.

Verified WhatsApp For Restaurants, Hotels & Cafe’s
WhatsApp Business, WhatsApp Business API, Verified WhatsApp
Tumblr media
In the restaurant business, it’s all about convenience, speed, and quality. You have already won half the battle if you can find a customer support avenue that guarantees these three. This is the rationale behind the creation of a brand-new WhatsApp meal ordering and delivery system.
It’s a wise move for your F&B business to try to reach out on platforms that your customers already frequently use. It facilitates relationships and creates a channel that serves as both a marketing tool and a channel for customer assistance. One such tool that can assist you in achieving all these without significantly depleting your money is WhatsApp Business for restaurants.
On your Android or iPhone, you can download WhatsApp Business without charge. To reach your intended customers, just register a business account and fill it out with pertinent information (such as contact information, your company’s name, and logo, opening hours, etc.). This service can be very helpful to small Businesses.
The opportunity: How WhatsApp Business can revolutionize your restaurant operations through AI
An app like WhatsApp has limitless market potential. WhatsApp is used by more than two billion people worldwide. Within a year of its 2018 launch, WhatsApp Business had amassed more than five million subscribers.
This is a very well-liked method of accessing services, scheduling appointments, ordering home delivery, and other things in the current market. Restaurants may make good use of these related traits. You can guarantee quicker customer service and more reach by allowing WhatsApp ordering at your restaurant.
You provide clients with a simple way to contact you with WhatsApp Business for restaurants so they can place orders, reserve tables, plan events, and contact you with any questions or issues. This can greatly benefit your local business and expand your customer base.
The issue WhatsApp Business can address
Due to rising competition, business owners of restaurants and home delivery services are seeking strategies to expand their customer base without spending a lot of money on advertising. Given that more users now prefer to order takeaway, this is now more crucial.
Research by the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association found that 24% of Gen-Z and 21% of millennials each order home delivery three to four times each week. The post-pandemic world is, to put it mildly, much more on-demand friendly.
Additionally, because they run on-demand or with a tiny staff, small businesses cannot afford to invest in advertising, billboards, or even outside food delivery services.
Such enterprises require a low-cost avenue to:
Promote their goods
Performing service deliveries
Actively interact with consumers
broadcasting offers and availability
The tools that WhatsApp for small businesses offers enable users to perform all these tasks and more.
Conversational AI is the solution.
A platform that provides the following can help restaurant businesses with their reachability issue:
automated customer service and problem solving
Lead generation and conversion
interaction with customers using their preferred medium
CSAT (customer satisfaction) and NPS (net promoter score) improvement
Personalized and prompt customer service
Affordable and widely accessible service
Learn more about why: Why is Everyone Talking about WhatsApp Chatbots for Food Tech?
One of the most popular apps in the world is WhatsApp. WhatsApp is used by 96% of all smartphone users in India alone. For a sizable portion of people in nations like the US, UAE, etc., WhatsApp is the main platform for online communication. As a result, it is a fantastic marketing tool for restaurant owners.
If a customer can get food and drinks through WhatsApp, they are more likely to do so than if they had to call a business and deal with waiting times or network problems.
Restaurants’ WhatsApp Business use cases
In just a few seconds, WhatsApp Business links companies with potential clients. It moves customer service beyond making an online purchase and has effectively supplanted antiquated methods like calling in orders.
This is the best route a company can offer its clients for tailored responses, requests, and query resolutions.
We will trace a customer’s path through a restaurant company’ sales funnel using the use cases that follow.
1. Generate, evaluate, and qualify leads quickly for smoother online-ordering
Lead generation is the first stage in every sales funnel. In the online restaurant sector, conversion cycles are frequently brief and quick. As a result, it’s critical for restaurants to review and validate leads as soon as possible customers present themselves.
Once a client messages your company on WhatsApp, you can get their name and phone number. additional information, including location, preferences, and email ID. You can also direct customers to WhatsApp and increase your lead generation by including a “click to chat” link on your website or in your ads.
After the initial message, you can chat with the client via the WhatsApp API for 24 hours. After that, you’ll need the customer’s opt-in consent to continue talking to them.
2. Quickly respond to inquiries during the ordering process or afterward
People who are hungry want answers now, please!
That is what an AI chatbot for WhatsApp can achieve! They could inquire about the location of your restaurant, the menu, the services, the return procedures, and the customization possibilities.
While assisting customers with placing food orders on WhatsApp, you can instantly respond to these questions.
3. Immediately acknowledge and validate placed orders
After addressing the FAQs, placing orders is the next step. The procedure for placing an order should be straightforward and comprise as few stages as feasible. This keeps the customer’s interaction light and enjoyable.
If this stage has too many obstacles, the customer can decide not to place an order from your restaurant.
Making an order also involves submitting requests for things like event and table reservations. There must be a customized response for each request.
4. Enable quick payment for orders from your users.
Recently, WhatsApp unveiled its payment tool, which your users can also use for companies. As an alternative, you can address any problems customers might be having paying for the order while simultaneously pointing them to additional payment alternatives over WhatsApp. For streamlined checkouts, you can link a variety of payment gateways with your chatbot.
Here’s how to seamlessly accept payments by integrating Platform with MsgClub.
5. Provide them with order tracking in real-time to ease their minds.
The importance of delivery updates in ensuring a good customer experience cannot be overstated. When the food is ready for delivery, providing an estimated time of arrival, and communicating the delivery person’s contact information are all necessary steps. You may also use a WhatsApp chatbot and the WhatsApp API to send automatic push alerts for the same.
6. Bad food? Inaccurate items? Refunds and returns that have been validated
Refunds and returns play a significant role in the restaurant business as well. The customer must have a platform to ask for returns or refunds if they decide they don’t like the food or run into other issues.
You may arrange returns, start refunds, and take additional actions to help a dissatisfied customer using WhatsApp Business.
7. Your user loved a dish or a restaurant? Let them place repeat orders
Your customers can order their preferred items from their preferred eateries. Giving your users discounts and vouchers is one way to thank them for their loyalty. This may encourage them to make more frequent orders from you.
By allowing users to gain discounts through a slot machine game each time they finish placing an order from one location, for instance, Swiggy recently made food ordering much more involved and exciting. Users are drawn back to their service to place more orders thanks to a sizable 30% discount on the following order.
8. “How did your order go?” Gather comments and ratings
The gathering of client feedback improves the customer experience. As soon as a sale is over, make sure to quickly gather feedback over WhatsApp so that your customers are more inclined to submit their most recent feedback. Your customers are more likely to reply to requests for feedback on WhatsApp than on SMS or emails because more people use chat apps.
9. How did the food delivery go? Encourage your users to recommend their friends
Having a satisfied stomach encourages positive word of mouth.
You can urge clients to tell their friends and family about your company. According to research, if a friend recommends a new restaurant, consumers are four times more likely to try it.
10. Discover what your users enjoy by gathering customer information.
The meal delivery option for WhatsApp Business makes long-term customer information collection simpler. This also holds true for clients who may have recently changed their phone number or other contact information.
Only from MsgClub, your all-in-one WhatsApp chatbot for your restaurant business
So it turns out there are a tonne of things a WhatsApp chatbot can do for your restaurant! A capable WhatsApp chatbot delivers a wide range of functions that can automate and expedite the majority of your customer communication, from accepting orders to making payments.

If you had to spend $100 at a restaurant for only you, what would you get?
hmm, there are so many options for this.
I think I'm gonna go with what we'd order if it was like, me and a few of our frequent fronters going for a meal at this restaurant because I'm not really sure what I'd order for myself but I know what other alters (mostly Lucy) would get me to try.
assuming it's a restaurant that serves anything we want, I think it'd be really fun to order a bunch of foods the system used to enjoy that we haven't had the chance to eat in a while. it'd give Lucy a chance to have some foods they've really missed, and since all our other frequent fronters haven't been around that long, it'd give us a chance to try some of the foods that other alters have told us about, and maybe chat about some of the nice memories associated with those foods.
the main things I can think of include:
the pizzas we used to get from a local takeaway (apparently they're just really, really good pizzas)
various Latin American foods from a restaurant we used to go to whenever we had birthday money and could justify treating ourselves
fries made the way our nanan used to make them, because we've never had ones made by anyone else that looked or tasted the same as those but apparently they were amazing
probably just like, a big bowl of paella
homemade tomato soup the way our mum made it when we were a kid
for dessert we'd probably have coffee & walnut cake, banana bread, and mango sorbet
drinks would probably include non-alcoholic shandy, Victorian lemonade (yes, the stuff I inhaled the other day), and virgin piña coladas
I have no idea if this actually adds up to $100 but oh well. they're all foods we have fond memories of or find comforting in some way and I think it'd be really nice to get to sit down and eat a bunch of them and have fun learning about some nice stuff from the system's past in the process

Leti + kitchen and bedroom :)
Hey thanks!
Kitchen:
Her favorite food is pasta with vodka sauce. Mainly her brother Sam's recipe. She ate it so much growing up, and requested it so much in the short time she had Sam in her life as a child, he started calling her Leti Spaghetti.
Leti is pretty good at cooking. She grew up cooking and baking with her mom before she disappeared and Leti ended up in foster car. But after going home with her father Sully, she gradually got back into it by helping Sam and Nate with cooking and baking and by her teen years she was cooking full meals for everyone. Both her traditional Colombian dishes and American/other ethnic dishes.
Leti does not lol she's very tidy in her home and if she's in someone else's she always offers to help clean. She's one of those that cleans as she cooks so there's less mess.
Lots of fruits and veggies in this girl's fridge. But she also has a lot of fresh ingredients. She buys as she needs, like red meats, fish, and poultry so it doesn't sit there and waste but also the standard butter, cheeses, milks and eggs amongst other random things.
Leti is a fair mix of all. She likes to cook fresh from scratch but sometimes she likes to eat out and order takeaway. She frequently has dinner with her father at a restaurant; think maybe 2-3 times a week for a specific meal. One day could be breakfast, another day lunch, another day dinner. If she orders take-away/delivery, she's feeling lazy and wants to curl up on the couch with a movie and her partner (could be Carlos or Rafe).
Bedroom:
Leti has a fairly simple evening/bedtime routine. Sometimes she showers at night if she's feeling stressed. Always a nightly face mask, sometimes she'll braid her hair other times she'll leave it down. She likes to put a calming lotion on before bed, think lavender and chamomile. Sometimes she'll read some of a book, look at emails, or finish up some work before relaxing in bed. She likes total darkness and a cool room so she usually has a fan on and pointed towards the bed, her door closed with just a crack left open, and blackout curtains. If she's alone she tends to sprawl out and switch spots on the bed for comfort, and is typically a side/stomach sleeper.
Leti's pajamas range depending on season lol spring and summer you'll see her in just a tank top or cami and her panties or shorts, or an oversized shirt (again either Carlos's or Rafe's, just depends on who she's dating at the time). Once it starts cooling off it's a regular t-shirt or her partner's shirt and longer pants. If it's really cold during the winter, she'll wear long sleeves and even socks sometimes.
Depends on how she's feeling and her stress levels when it comes to her dreams. Post Uncharted 4 events, she had a lot of nightmares that took a long time for her to work through and get over. When she doesn't have something stressful going on, she usually dreams of her loved ones. They're happy dreams.
Leti is very neat. She likes to keep her personal spaces as clutter free and clean as possible. She gets anxious frequently and if there's Too Much going on in her space, she feels trapped and overwhelmed. Sometimes she can let things collect, like her desk space, but even her messes are organized and not actually messy lol she deep cleans every weekend.
Leti can be pretty affectionate. She loves to snuggle with her partner in bed, loves to spoon; she can be both big and little spoon, she just enjoys the concept very much). Growing up, she was very touch starved/deprived while in the foster care system in Colombia. She got an overload from her father, Nate, and Sam growing up. She needs a lot of physical touch to feel okay. She likes to hug and likes to hold hands as well.

Food and Beverages: What are the Impacts in the Post-Pandemic Era?
The COVID-19 pandemic heavily changed the food and beverage industries. The pandemic changed consumer habits and raised food demand. Consumers’ eating and buying habits were impacted by restaurant closures or reduced operations, which caused a shift in orders. Trips to supermarkets rose significantly as shoppers bought long-lasting basics like wheat, rice, canned goods, and frozen foods. Customers favored takeaway and home delivery choices out of necessity.
Since the lockdown was lifted, the industry has been adjusting and inventing to overcome these difficulties and regain profitability. To increase consumer confidence and boost profits, the sector is developing new service offerings and COVID hygiene measures.
Impacts on the food and beverages industry in the post-pandemic era are:
1. Cloud Kitchens
Due to the decrease in consumer traffic in the QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) industry, most companies have begun the move to a cloud kitchen model, which offers significant infrastructure cost reductions. For the convenience of the customer, this approach is supported by partnerships with food aggregators that provide online ordering and delivery alternatives. Cloud kitchens saw a lot of growth post-pandemic as people now prefer to order in rather than go out to eat.
2. Digitalization
India’s food and beverage industries are undergoing remarkable changes, primarily due to digitalization. The “Chitale Group,” one of India’s top organizations, has put in place a traceability system that allows milk to be monitored from the point of purchase to the point of sale. They maintain a high degree of quality across their supply chain, allowing for the tracking of operational performance and digitization to identify breakdowns at any moment. This gives consumers transparency to see how the product is made as post-pandemic people are ready to spend a little extra on quality and sustainably made products.
3. Contactless Solutions
With an eye on health, safety, and security standards, contactless solutions are being used alongside self-service stations post-pandemic. Robotic delivery, digital menus, and in-app ordering are a few of the contactless options that are popular right now. The hospitality industry is utilizing technology like face recognition and contactless biometrics to allow customers to self-check in and check out, unlock rooms, and control elevators through facial scans.
If you are a brand that is looking to start a business in the food and beverages industry or you already have a business in the industry, you should conduct market research to see how your product will work in the post-pandemic era. Conduct market research today with IBI Global Research Solutions.

Switching to a service provider, the unit price per customer increased by 40%, and the messy fees were gone.
Tumblr media
▶Offline light food brand Douyin operation HE Tuber manager, over 50 offline stores in Beijing + Chengdu
We have also encountered pitfalls when looking for Douyin operators.
In April this year, the agent operator gave us our first live broadcast. The GMV of the five-hour live broadcast reached more than 200,000 yuan, ranking third on Douyin’s local group buying life list in Beijing. Sounds great, but there's no money to be made.
Because points are raised based on sales, the agent operation keeps the package price very low. For example, a burrito priced at 32 yuan is priced at 27.9 yuan in the store, and the discounted price is 27 yuan on Meituan Takeout and our mini program. During the live broadcast, they directly marked the price to 19 yuan, which is almost 40% off; there is also a 35 yuan burrito. The chicken breast meal is priced at 28 yuan, and they sell 50 yuan vouchers in the live broadcast room for 35 yuan, which is equivalent to a 30% discount, which is 24.5 yuan.
In Douyin Live, the sales price has been discounted by 40%. In addition, the platform deducts 2.5% and the operator deducts 10%. The total deduction is 12.5%. We will definitely make no money.
In mid-May, we switched to another agent and by the beginning of June we had done a total of 4 or 5 live broadcasts. Although the cumulative GMV was just over 400,000 yuan, the unit price per customer increased by 40%. We have also reached an agreement with the agent operator. We will not pay the pit fee for the experts to visit the store. We will adopt a pure commission model, and the commission will be included in the 10% commission we give to the agent operator. In other words, we do not pay any additional fees except the commission to the agent operator.
We have more than 50 light food restaurants in Beijing and Chengdu, with annual sales of nearly 100 million yuan. Takeaways contribute 60% of our revenue, currently Meituan is the main one. We do Douyin mainly for exposure and to increase the awareness of young people. At present, the proportion of sales is not large and the write-off rate is not high. In May, the GMV of our Douyin live broadcast was only 400,000 yuan, and 210,000 yuan was written off, with a write-off rate of just over 50%.
But Douyin is also solving the problem of in-store verification. Previously, we used an in-store verification system called HuaLaLa, but it did not support Douyin, so we had to prepare a separate mobile phone for verification of Douyin group buying coupons. At the end of February, Douyin was connected to Hualala, and store cashier computers can directly scan Douyin’s QR code.
In terms of time period, Douyin is also stimulating demand in "off-season" periods such as Mondays and Wednesdays. In May, our live broadcasts will also be held on Mondays and Wednesdays. They will also focus on node marketing. For example, in May, we did "Xindong 51". We labeled the products with event labels. If consumers place an order of more than 50 yuan, the platform will subsidize users 2 yuan.
At present, our main transactions are still with Meituan. Meituan has not taken any action yet, and the platform deduction points have not been reduced.
3. The write-off rate of Douyin Catering reaches 50%, and the write-off rate in one day accounts for 50%
▶The leading service provider of Douyin life services, operating GMV of hundreds of millions in 2016
This year, the GMV target of Douyin Local Life has tripled, and service providers with average strength also want to get a share of the pie. As a result, many catering businesses complained that the current agent operators of Douyin Life Service have chaotic management and chaotic charging.
Last year, at the Douyin Service Provider Conference, there were only 8 catering service providers around our city. This year, the number has increased to more than 200. In the past, most of those who transformed themselves into Douyin service providers were e-commerce service providers. But this year, all kinds of people want to get a piece of the pie, such as BDs from Meituan and Koubei, and catering businesses. Now, Douyin’s local life service providers have a low threshold and only need to pay a deposit of 100,000 yuan.
However, we feel that the chaos is only temporary. Douyin will gradually tighten its policies and eliminate a group of service providers with insufficient capabilities. Therefore, the confusion in management and fee exchange is only temporary.
At present, Douyin is doing whatever it takes to provide good services to KA and SKA merchants, trying to create a number of benchmark cases. We mainly serve KA customers. We hold a meeting with Douyin once a month to connect with the person in charge of operations of Douyin’s life service provider.
We charge commissions to catering merchants, usually 3%-8%. The larger the merchant, the lower the commission point. For example, if a customer like Cha Momo has sales of over 100 million in a single day, we would be happy to do it if the commission is 1%.
Compared with Meituan, Douyin provides merchants with resources, including traffic and low deduction points. Douyin’s deductions for catering merchants are 2.5%, beauties (including haircuts and medical beauty) are 3%-10%, entertainment is 3%-9%, travel agencies are 6%, cars are 5%, and shopping is 5%.
Now, Meituan has been reducing the deduction points, from the original 8% (catering package) to 4%. Some companies even waive the fee, while Meituan only charges a basic service fee. Correspondingly, they signed an exclusive agreement with Meituan. Either the price of other channels must be consistent with Meituan, or they must offline Douyin group purchase, but the agreement was only signed for three months. Meituan is not a charity, and it is also looking at the effects of these countermeasures.
In our view, Meituan’s measures have little impact on Douyin. Merchants should conduct live broadcasts and conduct promotions on special holidays. Because Douyin has made inroads outside of Meituan, through live broadcasts and short videos, consumers’ orders are entirely driven by content.
The write-off rate of Douyin’s catering sector has reached 50%, and this number will only be 30% in 2021. For Douyin catering packages (or vouchers), 50% are written off in one day, 15%
