16th Global Film Festival Noida Explores the Harmonious Relationship Between Literature and Cinema
Tumblr media
Noida: The third day of the 16th Global Film Festival Noida witnessed an engaging seminar delving into the “Correlation between literature and cinema.” Organized under the guidance of Festival President Dr. Sandeep Marwah, the event celebrated the interwoven narrative between words and images, presenting a symphony of storytelling that resonates across diverse cultures.
During this enlightening session, Festival President Dr. Sandeep Marwah, along with esteemed dignitaries, unveiled the book “The Definitive Biography Talat Mehmood” by Sahar Zaman, adding a significant literary touch to the festival.
Marwah expressed admiration for the cultural tapestry woven by literature and cinema, recognizing it as an art form that transcends linguistic and geographic boundaries. Renowned Actor Abhishek Duhan emphasized the profound connection between acting and literature, stating, “Acting is the art of breathing life into words, and literature provides the script for the cinema of our imagination.”
Renowned Composer and Singer Hriju Roy highlighted the role of music as a bridge connecting literature and cinema, transforming words into lyrical notes that dance through cinematic landscapes. Author Prem Singh Dhingra eloquently described the journey from the written page to the cinematic stage as a beautiful correlation between literature and cinema.
Actor and Singer Aroon Bakshi celebrated the relationship between words and visuals through the lens of cinema, creating a timeless composition. He expressed, “Literature is the mother of Cinema.” Renowned Director Pankaj Parashar described directing as a dialogue between literature and cinema, where every scene speaks the language of words written and images envisioned.
Hon. Consul General of Comoros K L Ganju acknowledged film festivals as bridges where the written word meets the visual narrative, fostering a harmonious connection between literature and cinema. Filmmaker from the USA Mike Berry eloquently stated, “Cinema is the canvas where literature paints its stories in vivid motion, transcending pages to captivate hearts.”
The distinguished guests were felicitated with festival mementos by Dr. Sandeep Marwah. Furthermore, Abhishek Duhan and Rajendra Parsekar were honored with the Hindi Cinema Gaurav Samman, adding another layer of recognition to their contributions. The session concluded on an interactive note, with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Festival Director Ashok Tyagi.

Boot Polish   :  Director’s Cut
By
Tumblr media
Dinesh Shankar Shailendra DIRECTOR'S CUT
Prakash Arora
While he was working on the script of Shri 420, Raj Kapoor decided to give his assistant, Prakash Arora a break.... It would be a De Sica like film.... About orphans, anti-begging and about dignity of labour.....A common practice that exists even now, whenever a big producer gives a debutante director a break, he has the final say in the editing of the film...Initially planned as a songless film, 'Boot Polish' seemed too serious for an R K Production..... Raj Kapoor called his 'dream - team'...... Shanker Jaikishen, Hasrat and Shailendra and, after showing them the film, they discussed the situations for songs.... They finally settled on 7 songs !One written by Saraswati Kumar 'Deepak' ( Raat gayi phir din aata hai ), two by Hasrat Jaipuri and four by Shailendra....After this film ( 1953-54 ), it was only after Shailendra passed away in 1966, that a third writer ( apart from Hasrat and Shailendra ) would write for an R K Film.... The reason was definitely not just friendship !!!One song, written by Shailendra, had the producer, Raj Kapoor in a fix.... He was madly in love with the song.... His 'Pushkin' had written it beautifully.... He was looking for the right person to perform it on screen.... He suddenly got an idea.... He told Shailendra..... " Kaviraj..... you will sing it on screen.... "Shailendra was a little camera - shy and refused...... Raj Kapoor blackmailed him....... " Either it is you on screen or I will not have this song in the film...." !!!Shailendra gave in.....Dressed as a street performer, a few teeth blackened, he was playing the banjo as he sang this Talat Mehmood song..... Asha Bhonsle sings for the little girl who dances .... A fact worth mentioning is that both voices match the actors on screen perfectly...The situation is sad.... Bhola, the young boy ( Master Ratan ), is grieving as he has been separated from Belu ( Baby Naaz ) He is sad.....A 'sarangi' piece from the background music leads into the song....The song starts with a mid-shot of Shailendra sitting under a tree....banjo in hand... As he starts singing, the camera trucks back to include people gathering and a little girl dancing..." Chali kaunsey desh, gujariyaa, tu sajj dhajj ke...."She answers :"Jaaoon piyaa ke desh, o rasiyaa, main sajj dhajj ke..."The interlude starts with a sweet mandolin piece ( for the banjo ) .... The girl is dancing gaily ....Violins bring the song back to a serious note...The first verse....Shailendra sings..." Chhalkey maat, pitaa ki ankhiyaan, rovein terey bachpan ki sakhiyaan, bhaiyya karey pukaar, na jaa ghar aangan taj ke...."The little girl sings..." Jaaoon piyaa ke desh, o rasiyaa main sajj dhajj key..."The second interlude is longer.... again another mandolin piece, ending with violins.... Now the girl sings..." Door desh, merey pi ki nagariyaa, main unki, woh merey sanwariyaa, baandhi lagan ki dor, mainey sab soch samajh ke...."A mandolin piece brings up the end of this song... It comes across as a simple song of 'bidaayi'....the married girl going to the house of her beloved .... leaving her parental home....That is too simple for a song written by Shailendra....!!!Have you noticed a glaring fact ? Any girl, during her 'bidaayi' cries too....This girl is HAPPY...!" Baandhi lagan ki dor, mainey SAB SOCH SAMAJH KE "She is celebrating ! ... It is the soul that is talking about being one with the MAKER !Unfortunately, it is in the third verse that Shailendra opens his cards... He probably feels that the common audience will not understand the 'Sufi' side of this song....So he decides to spell it out for them....Unfortunately, the third verse is not in any of the videos available...Before I go further, I would like to request the uploaders, especially my friend and 'thinking' uploader, Ajay Yuvraj , to kindly do a little more, so that the essence of a particular song percolates to the average thinker like me...The third verse..." Do din jag mein, dhoom machaaye, jaakey koyi, waapas na aaye, khoj, khoj thakk jaaye, do naina, chaand suraj ke......"The whole song comes across differently..... It is all about going through the process of life..... of love..... to be a soulmate of the creator.....Shanker Jaikishen understand perfectly what has to be said.... They keep it as simple as possible.....The director shoots it wonderfully....Talat Mehmood and Asha Bhonsle sing it to perfection...Shailendra and the others play their parts to perfection...."taj ke "...... ( tyaag karkey, sacrificing the home and courtyard of one's home )A rare expression for any form of poetry... A rustic word to match the situation and the setting...Think about it...

Remembering Hindi cinema's legendary singing star Surendra on his 109th birth anniversary today.
This generation may not have heard of him, but he was heard with pin-drop silence when he sang his soul-stirring song “Kyon yaad aa rahen hain guzare huye zamzne...” on the stage during Indian Cinema's Golden Jubilee celebrations in the year 1982. The audience that included biggest of the Bollywood names knew him well and had their eyes moistened by the touching melody which looked so true to life. The glorious bygone era of Surendra, the singing star sensation of the 30s and 40s and heartthrob of thousands then, seemed to have suddenly come back before them. Their spontaneous applause and standing ovation made him overwhelmed with emotion, as their so much admiration and regard was, perhaps, his best recognition in many decades since his most melodious early years of Hindi films.
Surendra was born on November 11, 1910 in Batla village of Punjab. He always used B.A., L.L.B. with his name and wanted to establish himself as a successful lawyer, but due to his pleasent voice everyone suggested him to become a singer and try hands at Hindi cinema. Finally, he agreed with them and came to Bombay to join Mehboob Khan's Sagar Movie Tones.
In 1936, he got his first break in Deccan Queen. Deccan Queen established him as a sining star. He released a parody of K. L. Saigal's 'Baalam Aaye..' in his voice as 'Birha Ki Aag Lagi..' which became an instant hit with the film-goers. His next film Aansuon Ki Duniya went un-noticed. He sang 'Tumhi Ne Mujhko Prem Sikhaya..' with Bibbo in his next film Manmohan which became very successful soon after the release of the film, and he got recognition as a singing star of those times. With Jaagirdaar he got his first chance to sing under the baton of great music director Anil Biswaas. Anilda recognised the talent in the young man and was very much impressed by Surendra's voice and ability to sing. Anilda fortified his singing abilities. He gave further chances in Gramophone Singer, Jiwan Saathi, Alibaba, Aurat, Ghareeb, Jawani, etc.
When Anil Biswaas switched over to Bombay Talkies, Surendra sang under Khemchand Prakash and Gyan Dutt for about 2-3 years. Khemchand's Bharthari (1944) was among his best musical creations. Surendra sang 'Bhanwara Madhuban Me Jaa..', 'Bhiksha De De Maa..', 'Allah Naam Ras Pina Praani..' and 'Prem Bina Sab Soona..' in Bharthari. In 1946, Surendra got the opportunity of his life time, when, Mehboob who was making Anmol Ghadi, called him up and gave him the chance to work against the then singing stars Noor Jahan and Suraiyya. For Anmol Ghadi, Naushad gave him a golden chance to sing with Noor Jahan, and Surendra lived up to all expectations. Surendra got songs like 'Aawaz De Kahan Hai..' a duet with Noor Jahan, which was a huge hit, 'Kyun Yaad Aa Rahe Hain Gujre Hue Zamaane..' and 'Ab Kaun Hai Mera..'.
Anmol Ghadi was a huge success and thus Naushad repeated Surendra in Anokhi Ada, Elaan, etc. Surendra sang probably his best song in Gawaiya (1954) under music directly Ram Ganguly, the song was 'Teri Yaad Ka Deepak Jalta Hai Din Raat..' the other version (faster) of the song was sung by the great Talat Mehmood. But, it was the slow version sung by Surendra who took the notice of the film-goers. Ironically, after this he almost stopped singing and confined himself to acting. He acted in many films, like, Dil Deke Dekho, Mughal-e-Aazam, Baaghi, Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne, Waqt, An Evening in Paris, Milan and Sarasatichandra, to name a few.
