So I definitely ate my fair share of Easter chocolate this weekend, and had two roast dinners and a lot of other Easter related goodies, and I'm feeling sort of whale-esque again, so I've been quite good today with my food with the exception of some left over Easter chocolate which I refuse to throw away, and I'm fully planning on going for a run if I get home at a decent hour tonight after prepping for my lessons tomorrow, so hopefully I will end the day on a high! I've got triple lessons this week with a history student as well as three hours in the morning of EFL so I'm going to be so tired in the afternoons :( but it's a good student and a good subject so 👌🏻

Took a quiet and alone time in my classroom today as we bid goodbye to SY 2016-2017. Time flies. I first entered this classroom like a blank slate—no idea what to put here and there. I was wondering what would it be like to have children in it. My first year as an adviser was really a riot. There were times I would be shocked because my pupils were punching each other in the face; or something was stolen from someone. Geez. For the first time, the limits of my patience were put into test. Surely, there were times I wish I could have done more...I wish I could have done better...I wish I were able to teach this and that...Or on the other side of the equation there were times I wished my students were like this, behaved like that, did not skip class, did not drop out 😥But at the end of the day, this classroom was my happy pill. When I got tired, just a short visit there (I stay in our Computer Lab) I am recharged seeing the faces of my children and listening to their stories. I am truly glad I had this class and them as my very first advisory. "There will always be a first time". What I gained from this experience? Aaaaggggh more gray hairs and wrinkles 😂. Seriously, I have discovered that I can be this fulfilled while being a teacher. The stress is all worth it. The sleepless nights were all worth it. Shelling out from my own pocket to let my students experience what I have experienced were all SO WORTH IT. I am far from the perfect teacher as there is no one but I will try my best to be better next School Year. Ghaaaaaad this post is mahaba na. The Life of a Teacher!

Me1: Teaching is great! You get to work with children and make a difference in the world.

Me2: Children?!?! They are the spawn of satan! Those little boogers do everything they can to get on your nerves.

Me1: Sometimes, but there is nothing like the look on their face when they get something right after working really hard on it.

Me2: How much work did you have to put in to get them there though? Some kids just stare at you with those blank looks not even trying.

Me1: If they give you that look then you just have to research other ways to help them out. Use all of the possible strategies that you can find.

Me2: Research? Who wants to research when they go home for the day? I mean, I can get a secretary job, work my eight hours, go home and do nothing.

Me1: You could do that... Or you can feel accomplished when you finally find a strategy that works for a kid that just didn't get it. Then your work pays off.

Teaching Is Life

I am committed to reducing the opportunity gap and the achievement gap in NYC schools. While I am just beginning the teacher certification process, I have two years of experience serving in NYC schools through AmeriCorps. It is because of this service that I decided to pursue certification. My students have taught me so much, and while I have much more to learn, I know that my students will invigorate me and constantly remind me of why I want to be a teacher.

I have particularly enjoyed watching one student grow into who she is and develop and her beliefs over the past two years. When I first met her as an angry sixth grader, she was "that student." Every teacher seemed to struggle with her disruptive behaviors in the classroom. She is her own worst critic, and she saw her failing grades as evidence that she was not smart. In January of this spring semester, she finally seemed to believe in herself when out of the entire class reading and analyzing the poem, The Raven, she was the first to 'get it.' Soon after this, I initiated a conversation with her about her grades because while she is highly intelligent, she was failing many of her core classes. She shocked many of her teachers by reaching out to them about her grades. They had inadvertently written her off. This sparked a change in how she perceived herself, the schools' rules and systems, as well as her teachers. She began writing at home "just for fun." In the time that most students created one writing piece in a unit, she wrote five, all of them deeply philosophical and questioning the world as we know it, one of which she convinced the vice principal to print and hang as a large poster in the hallway. She is "that student," the student that has the power to change the culture of a classroom and a school. She embodies the quote, "strong willed children become adults who change the world as long as we can hang on for the ride and resist the temptation to 'tame' the spirit out of them." I view my small role in her life as a teacher she trusted to see her for who she is as one of my greatest accomplishments.
