26 SEPTEMBER 2023 || AW HAINSWORTH, LEEDS
The Princess of Wales visited Leeds and Lancaster to learn more about the textile industry's heritage, sustainable practices and work educating and upskilling young people.
For her first engagement of the day, she visited AW Hainsworth in Leeds which is a family-owned heritage textile mill. Established in 1783, it manufactures British woollen cloth, high-performing technical textiles, and fabrics.
The mill has a special family connection to Catherine as her ancestors owned the business, at the time known as William Lupton & Co, before selling it to AW Hainsworth in 1958.
As she arrived Catherine recieved a tour of the mill, as well as gained a deeper understanding of her ancestors' connection to the business. She learnt about the textile's manufacturing process - from yarn to fabric, and how traditional machinery and techniques are the backbone of today’ s industry. She also met with the company’s apprentices and their mentors, who are passing down generations of specialist skills.

Many contentious, annoying things are happening this morning, so I am choosing to focus only on the piece of clickbait I'm seeing every 4 or 5 posts that just straight up says Keanu Reeves is dead. They didn't even go with the bait & switch of "Celebrities We Lost This Year" plus a random picture of someone like Chris Pratt who is definitely alive just to force the click, they're directly referring to Keanu by name as being deceased--and then there's this peculiarly nasty byline that goes "Hollywood favors couldn't save him from a tragic fate" as if universally beloved icon Keanu Reeves were previously only alive unfairly because of sleazy backdoor rich guy deals and and now we can all be smugly satisfied that he met with the Great Equalizer like a regular jagoff. Like that's the Keanu Reeves story, that's how we all feel about him.
Spam, phishing, and the like fascinate me because it seems like in the majority of cases it's always incredibly primitive and hasn't evolved at all in the decades since the internet became popularly accessible. In this case, the Keanu Reeves death announcement appears to be sponsored by a made-up textile store, and links to a website called Debut Allbum (sic). And like I know the point of clickbait is to force you to look at ads, but the really criminal forms of spam that are straight up larceny are also this stupid. I love that screenshot going around of a threatening text message somebody received from "The IRS" demanding they pay their back taxes by navigating to Caliente Burrito dot com or something. They're all like that, it's like they're not even remotely trying. It feels like they all use some program that dynamically generates Random Threat/Promise + Random Link Text, and not one single person in the entire process has ever said "Maybe the message and the link should appear to be related? Maybe more people will fall for our scary message about their auto insurance if it doesn't come from [email protected]?"
I have a burning desire for a documentary about these kinds of bottomfeeder internet scams. I'm dying to hear from the people who operate them. It seems obvious that the scams don't cost much to run, but do they really turn such a big profit that it would be a waste of resources to try to improve them, to make them even slightly more convincing than not-at-all? Or is it that the people who run these things are really, genuinely as stupid as they seem according to the typo-riddled emails I get insisting that I need to pay the United States Postal Service to reroute my withheld mail by entering my bank information at McDonald's Gift Card dot com? It's funny to think that whoever creates this stuff has enough technical knowledge to execute on it, but not the intelligence necessary to stop the resulting spam from just being word salad. Who are these people?
Of course the inevitable next question is, how are they able to get away with it? The whole situation is so paradoxical. It's like, you have a criminal who is dumb enough to create/pay for the creation of spam that is just a bunch of surreal nonsense, but who is using technology/services sophisticated enough to evade detection and prosecution. And/or our law enforcement machinery is too far behind or too stupid itself to catch even the dumbest crook. It's crazy how we live in the future with all these scientific advantages and an ever-escalating speed of information transmission, yet it feels like nothing about the basic issue human being has changed, and we're all just a bunch of neanderthals trying to navigate a world that is increasingly out of scale for us.

25 January 2023: King Abdullah II was briefed on the government’s programme to implement the Economic Modernisation Vision in the industry, labour, and tourism sectors, within a specific timeframe.
During a meeting attended by Crown Prince Hussein, King Abdullah stressed the importance of working to ensure the projects under the vision are implemented successfully by having the required tools, qualified human resources, and funding.
His Majesty urged identifying the roles and responsibilities of each employee at the relevant ministries, and tying performance assessments to project implementation. (Source: Petra)
The King also called for keeping the public informed on the progress of implementing the economic vision, in order to maintain transparency and accountability. His Majesty said the delivery unit at the Prime Ministry must follow up with each ministry on progress in implementation and check for any delays or inconsistencies. Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh gave a briefing on the monthly programme of priorities for the concerned ministries, noting that nine ministries so far have identified these priorities and the projects that fall under them within the Economic Modernisation Vision. The prime minister noted that work is underway to set up an electronic system to monitor delivery and execution, submitting monthly and quarterly reports on progress. Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply and Minister of Labour Yousef Shamali, and Tourism Minister Makram Queisi gave a briefing on their ministries’ programmes and tasks within the economic vision. Shamali said the industry and labour ministries’ priorities include building and developing a centre for exhibitions, devising and implementing a national strategy for exports over the next two years, and preparing industry policies to focus on high-value sectors such as the textile and pharmaceutical industries. He also referred to plans to establish a technical training centre specialised in hybrid and electric vehicles, as well as heavy machinery. Queisi said the tourism ministry’s priorities within the economic vision include developing the tourism product and the historical narrative of archaeological sites, encouraging tourists to extend their stays, and streamlining measures for investors in the sector. The minister also pointed to plans to regulate adventure tourism, bolster cooperation with the Public Security Directorate to ensure tourists’ security and safeguard tourism sites, implementing promotional campaigns, and developing conference and medical tourism.

CHAUDHRY SHAFAY HUSSAIN LAYS FOUNDATION STONE TO BUILD 19 CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE
Lahore, 18 September 2024:
Provincial Minister for Industries and Commerce Chaudhry Shafay Hussain laid the foundation stone of the project to build 19 Centres of Excellence in Government College of Technology at Allama Iqbal Town. Under the project, Centres of Excellence will be established in 16 institutions of TEVTA and 3 institutions of Punjab Vocational and Training Council. With the support of Asian Development Bank, 19 centres of excellence will be built and the project will cost Rs. 5 billion.
Speaking at the event, Chaudhry Shafay Hussain said that the plan to establish centres of excellence in Punjab is a milestone in the preparation of skilled manpower. Completion of the project will increase the efficiency and professional technical skills of these institutions. CBTA based courses will be conducted on modern lines in all these centres of excellence.
Chaudhry Shafi Hussain apprised that under this project, access to technical and vocational education will be easy. The youth will get decent employment opportunities. 8 different priority economic sectors have been selected under this project which include information communication, technology, health, hospitality, construction, textiles, garments, light engineering, agriculture farm machinery, surgical instruments, automobiles, auto-bike assembling and food processing sectors as well.
The Provincial Minister for Industries and Commerce said that a revolutionary project has been started to create centres of excellence for the promotion of skill development. Garment City is being built in Quaid-e-Azam Business Park Sheikhupura on an area of 630 acres. China's textile industry will move to Garment City and new factories will also be built over there.
Chaudhry Shafay Hussain said that Chinese companies will set up factories for manufacturing solar panels and electric vehicles in Punjab this year. He underscored that if all institutions work hard and diligently, there will be no need to borrow from the IMF. For the first time, solar studies have been initiated in TEVTA’s facilities and the project to upgrade TEVTA’s facilities has been initiated.
Chairperson Chief Minister Task Force on Technical Education Adnan Afzal Chattha said that a major skill development project has been started with the support of Asian Development Bank. 37,000 children will benefit from this project launched with the support of Asian Development Bank. He said that under the Chief Ministerial Development Program, IT short courses are being provided free of cost to the youth.
Provincial Secretary for Industries and Commerce Ehsan Bhutta said that 64% youth population is not a burden but the future of the country. The destiny of the country can be changed by making the youth skilled. He said that girls have been given free pick and drop facility in Garment City and they are also being given a stipend of Rs. 20,000 per month. He further informed that Centers of Excellence in Sialkot and Mianchannu will be completed by December. Project Director Zohaib highlighted the salient features of the project.
