What is TEC Certification?

The Indian government's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) depends on the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC). TEC's primary function is to assist in developing and implementing various guidelines and regulations that ensure the responsible and secure use of emerging technologies in the telecommunications industry.

Initially voluntary in 1991, TEC certification became mandatory in 2019 under the law No. 10-1/2017-IT/TEC/ER, which introduced the Mandatory Testing Certification of Telecommunication Equipment (MTCTE) law incrementally.

In India, TEC serves as the authority for certifying telecommunication equipment, following the stringent standards set by the MTCTE program.

There are three types of specifications for telecom equipment quality measures:

Generic Requirements (GRs)

Interface Requirements (IRs)

Service Requirements (SRs)

Note: The issuance of TEC Certification can take up to 30 days from the application date, depending on the product category, testing requirements, and other factors.

TRAI says domestic production of telecom equipment is increasingly in strategic interest

Amid concerns over China's use of devices in telecom networks on a large scale, the Telecom Network Authority of India (TRAI) has said that India should speed up domestic manufacturing of communication devices for 'strategic' reasons. TRAI chairman RS Sharma told PTI, "India has become a major center for mobile handset manufacturing, but the same needs to be done in the case of telecom devices." It is a sensitive and core system of strategically important telecommunications networks. Sharma said that detailed recommendations have been made on the manufacturing of telecom equipment at the local level.

Voices are being raised in the world and India for not using Chinese devices in the network for security reasons. From this point of view, this statement of the head of TRAI is important. India is still assessing whether Huawei and ZTE can be excluded from the upcoming 5G trial. However, the final decision thus far has not been made. Sharma said, "It will be in the strategic interest of the country to speed up the manufacturing of telecom equipment at the domestic level." TRAI has given its recommendations on this some time ago.
