Teletia S
Looking up references for the Teletia S and went back to the official PGSM website archive. Now that I understand Japanese much, much better, I am fascinated by what the official description says.
Tumblr media
Translation:
The communication items the Senshi holds are cell phone type, but they are special ones.
Except for Minako, the other four Senshi received their respective item from Luna. Whenever a Youma or other enemy appears, even if the phone is turned off, an emergency signal will still be triggered. As long as there is no direct interference from the Dark Kingdom, the Senshi can contact each other anytime, anywhere. The phone also has a function that allows the user to transform into any costume and appearance by taking a photo, and if the image is saved, the user can transform at any time! It seems that all the Senshi have various outfits saved in their respective phones should the need to use them arise Normally, they can enjoy making phone calls and sending messages as if they were normal cell phones.
I wrote AND rewrote EoT chapter 7 before finding this, so I feel a sense of validation for writing the phones to have operated on a "Senshi signal" based on some sort of "Lunarian communication system." lol
Also, I laughed at the part where they said the respective Senshi had saved up different costumes in their phone, though we know only Rei had saved up the practical ones based on Act 31. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not sure what type of costume Makoto might have saved, but I'd bet Minako has the Sailor V costume saved in hers for a pseudo-transformation since that's how Artemis had her transform in Act Zero.
Tumblr media
My specific headcanon about the Teletia S are:
They are waterproof.
They are shockproof and practically indestructible.
They don't need electricity to charge. Just by being near their owners, they are magically charged up.
^Basically it's completely made of alien / Lunarian technology
Emergency signal normally overrides silent/vibrate mode, airplane mode and being turned off. Artemis had to make some special adjustments for Minako's so hers doesn't ring in the middle of her work. Coz.... that'd be awkward.
The only downside of these phones is they look so childishly toy-like. The Senshi all kept theirs even as adults, but everyone but Rei also acquired a normal phone just coz... they got too embarrassed using their Teletia S publicly. Rei feels the same but is too frugal and doesn't use a cell phone enough to bother buying one. :P
Here's my theory/headcanon on how the physical Sailor V costume and Teletia S transformation work together.

Okay so Ami is finally airing some pretty serious feelings to Rei here, and I'll get to that, but...
Usagi, why are you running all the way to Makoto's flat? YOU HAVE PHONES

Found some more random PGSM scans on my hard drive. If I recall correctly, these were cards you could insert into the Teletia S toys, which would play messages from the associated Senshi (but I could be wrong).

Miraculous Ladybug’s YoYo - Compact Caller vs Make Up YoYo
This is a review I would have liked to make much sooner, since I guess that the Ladybug Compact Caller is one of the key toys this Christmas (it is sold everywhere here), but life happens and I had no time before.
Oh well. These are still cool toys and I wanted to share ^_^
------------
Let’s start with the Compact Caller!
Tumblr media
As I said, this here seems to be the go-to toy this Christmas. I don’t know how Ladybug became so crazy popular in Spain, but I’m so happy that it is doing so well! It has also replaced the Paw Patrol as the omnipresent franchise, and however that happened, thank youuuuuu!
The packaging of the Caller is very eyecatching, with lively colours (Ladybug has started to suffer the same pinkering as Spiderman, but thank goodness is not very spread... yet) and a multilayered shape that makes it easy to spot even in the all-black-and-red Miraculous Ladybug aisle.
The front is open enough to see all the available cards:
Tumblr media
And the back shows them all, plus instructions and a not-very-thrilled girl:
Tumblr media
The 9 friends that you can talk with are: Ladybug, Marinette, Tikki, Chat Noir, Adrien, Plagg, Marinette’s mom, Marinette’s dad and Alya (who has Marinette in her picture). This is a very Marinette-centric toy, is what I mean.
Tumblr media
The screws are way too obvious for my taste, though. At least it closes (with a rotation), which was not obvious at first glance:
Tumblr media
Now, at first I wondered if the cards were electronic themselves, but this toy works pretty much in the same was as the Teletia S from PGSM: press certain keys (in this case, the four peripheral buttons) in a certain order and then press the call button, and the character answering depends on the key combination. It works without cards just the same.
The Teletia had it better in that the numbers on the card were obscured and could only be read when the card was inserted, because the screen had a filter that made the number combination visible. However, you could also try random numbers, all the sentences were pre-recorded anyway.
This is the Spanish version of the toy, so all the recordings are in Spanish. This is not as usual as it should (I’m looking at you, Disney!) and I’m glad ZAG has bothered to make this toy’s fun actually accessible to the kids.
On the other hand, they didn’t bother enough to choose recordings that made sense in a so-called ‘caller’. Every character says random sentences from random episodes. I haven’t tried very hard, but maximum I’ve gotten are two sentences per character, and they are pretty stupid - Marinette’s mom telling her to wait for the clients in the shop, or Adrien saying that he’s gonna fetch some water... I would complain more, but I am too ashamed by the fact that I could place most of the sentences so that’s that.
Now the real reason I got this myself - how good is the Compact Caller as atrezzo?
Tumblr media
The size is very good! Well, I’m tiny for an adult, but I love its weight and shape on my hand, practically the same as the real thing.
Still not perfect, since the back is smooth with the spots just painted:
Tumblr media
And the front has a telephone symbol on the front, which is also a very well hidden light:
Tumblr media
(Remember to turn it off or Adrien will keep calling to tell you about water!)
So I do recommend it as a toy for any young fan, while collectors would probably like something closer to the real thing.
---------------
Let’s now move on to this little thing I found by chance. This one is not as easy to find as the Caller, but is cheaper and, in my opinion, more interesting: the Make Up YoYo.
Tumblr media
This is one of those silly ‘toys’ that are actually just glorified containers of cheap make up.
Again, the packaging is cute and attractive and lets you see everything you are getting, while the back proclaims that with this you will be ‘like Ladybug or Marinette’ (do kids like Marinette better than Ladybug? Why is every of this toys so focused on her?), plus lots of info on the cheap make up that your kids are gonna spread everywhere including their faces:
Tumblr media
Here we are all the contents:
Tumblr media
As you can see, the lids open straight, and the one opening in an angle is actually loose and just packaged that way for display purposes. You need to shove it in place yourself.
There’s a see-through lid on the make up, but everything is flimsy plastic barely held down by a tiny piece of.. sticky something. Very easy to remove, barely any force needed.
Tumblr media
The make up went straight to the garbage, but still I have to say that it is such a generic palette. They didn’t even try to get a Marinette-inspired palette or something. Oh well.
And how does this toy pass the atrezzo test?
With flying colours! I love it!
OK, it is a tad small:
Tumblr media
But the back is much better than the Caller’s, wit the spots being raised and looking just like those in the front:
Tumblr media
(the sticker can be removed, no probs)
And the best part, and a very pleasant surprise: it is a working yoyo! And a pretty decent one. I surprised myself yoyoing between takes, it is just so easy.
Even before I opened these toys, I had been working on a design to include as many functions of the original on a homemade one, but I doubted that the yoyo part was feasible - now I know that it is!
-----------------
So, which Ladybug yoyo do you like better? Is there any other version out there that I have yet to see?

the only bad part about pgsm is that we didn’t get to see usagi weighing down her teletia s with a million adorable phone charms and luna sobbing defeatedly

So here's a funny thought: This flip phone (which is apparently called the Teletia S) can store outfits, sure...but we never see them manage their 'inventory' so to speak.
Does this thing even have a delete button in-universe? What if it *doesn't*? Usagi goes all shutterbug with it and then finds out she can't delete any of the outfits she changed her mind on, so they forever take up space in the lineup and she has to thumb past them every time she's choosing an outfit.
Two years later, as fashion trends have moved on, Usagi will groan at all the outdated, useless stuff she has on there. No one would wear this, she'd moan! This won't make for an effective disguise at all!
She also quickly flips past all the outfits she didn't mean to take a picture of. Either her thumb slipped or her aim was thrown off by something. Suddenly she has the most unflattering outfit ever on her phone and she can never ever delete it. Oh, the possibilities!
Also consider: if this thing has an infinite hard drive for outfits, that means Rei can go on a quest to photograph every single profession in the world. She'll be like a Pokémon master, just for work-related disguises.

The suspenseful bgm continuing to play as people filed into the church is a nice touch, but the fact no one was talking at all and then Hina opened her mouth with a really perky voice was such a weird dissonance for me. I just have to laugh imagining her voice echoing off the walls given the acoustics in the hall, and everyone turning their head and trying to shush her. lol
Nice segue though from MamoHina to the UsaMamo plot:

USAGI, PLE--ASE LMAO
This transition scene is out of this world! Absolutely bonkers! They REALLY decided it's time to insert some Usagi-style humour into this scene to liven things up in this episode and remind the audience Usagi is still Usagi even when she's lovesick!
Usagi was so deep in thought she thought the phone vibration was her heart pounding too loudly in her chest! HAHAHAHA And the melancholic bgm abruptly stopped when she thought "あ! 携帯か!"? The semantics of this phrase suggests her attributing her Teletia S. to the sensation she was thinking about, I cannot with this silly rabbit. The editing and scriptwriting really hit me in my sense of humor lol

Using someone else's name to get into an auction? Sailor N here is truly an honorary Senshi! Someone get this girl a Teletia S so she can sneak into every single place and solve every single crime.
I wonder if Teletia S libraries could ever be made shareable. If so, Rei could instantly upload disguises of every single profession in the world to Naru's phone. She'd be like the Q to Naru's James Bond!

My god, the effects! They...they exist! ...Honestly, they tried, kudos for that.
In the prequel act, we find out Minako can 'transform' into Sailor V with her phone, so I feel like this costume is just a backup in case she loses her Teletia S. OR it's a clever ploy for plausible deniability in case she ever gets recognised as Sailor V! She can pretend she was cosplaying.
Anyway, this is the first real scene with Minako that we get. That's right: This is the audience's introduction to Aino Minako. So far she's been posing on tall things and warning Sailor Moon, but not much else. Now, though, we get our first proper look at the character.
When in the presence of her team/staff as an idol, she seems like a normal, although reserved, young girl. She smiles, she's polite, and she works hard at her career. But once she's left alone, things change. It's as though a switch has just been flipped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PGSM actually executes a good editing trick here. We immediately switch from the familiar footage of Sailor V to this face from Minako. Sailor V is taunting Tuxedo Kamen in this shot. It gives her a playful feel. However, Minako seems anything but playful.
Through this simple cut, we're shown that the Sailor V we saw at the start is not what Minako is like in her day-to-day existence, especially in private.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As is known by most people who have heard of PGSM, this version of Minako is the biggest departure among the five main characters. This Minako is stoic, pragmatic and serious to a fault. As both a teen idol and a solitary Sailor Senshi, she's been completely cut off from a normal life. Hell, she doesn't even go to school on-screen. (I say on-screen because there are a few deleted scenes with her in a school uniform.)
Minako may have a habit of being expertly positioned to assert authority over those she speaks to, but she's also utterly alone as a result. Isolated. Always on the outside, looking in on the things she can't have. How that affects her is something that--like every main character's emotional baggage--will shape the story of PGSM.

Costume choice wise, I think it very interesting that Ami's wearing basically what's currently Usagi and Makoto's colours - the pink matching Usagi's and the beige matching Makoto's bag (like is literally the same shade). I certainly can be over-projecting here, but I wonder if it's a visual representation of her role in this episode (and continue to be in the coming episodes in building up to the Darkury arc), that she's a passive bystander as everything moves around them. Ami also generally has a lot of pink in her wardrobe, but I'm pretty sure it lessens after the Darkury arc.
Anyway, it's adorable to have this scene, it seem Usagi appeared a bit more her normal self while walking around with Ami and Makoto. The piece of knitted cloth is also a nice piece to indicate to us that after allllll the singing at Crown, Usagi managed to do some knitting. Though as Makoto mentioned, it's barely done as part of the complete project. lol
LOL that when their Teletia S rang, Usagi and Ami searched their phone in sync but Makoto caught on late. I guess when all of them have the same ringtone, it gets confusing. :P

The three of them turning around with their serious faces on, and the slow zoom in is SO COOL! They look awesome af as well running off together!
Welp, next scene's gonna be fun...

We’ve gone full circle again!!!!!!  I LOVE PGSM’S STORYTELLING SO MUCH!
Minako had lost motivation and grew “tired” because she met Usagi in person, but now she has renewed her motivation and felt rejuvenated because she got to KNOW Usagi as a person!  Knowing the whole story, it’s also highly significant and important that just from taking action, at this moment, Minako had arrived to the conclusion that Usagi is someone worth fighting for.
On a very different note... FAN THEORY TIME!
okay, I know many people have given PGSM flak for the plot hole of this Sailor V transformation scene, because we saw the V costume in Minako’s suitcase earlier in Act 11.  Honestly I was critical of this too. But now, I have A THEORY. A theory that might close the hole.
First of all, Sailor V wasn’t Minako’s true transformation; it’s different to Sailor Venus and thus the power/magic doesn’t source from the Sailor Jewelry Bracelet.  In fact, in Act Zero, Artemis had actually used Minako’s Teletia S to snap Minako into the Sailor V appearance.  As we’ve learnt since Act 2, the Teletia S can manifest and snap the girls into any costume or outfit from just a click of a button, but for it to happen, it NEEDS TO HAVE SOMETHING TO GO OFF OF -  A SOURCE. It’s like copy and paste from an Excel spreadsheet.  If the cell is empty when you copy, there is nothing you can paste from.  SO. Because Sailor V costume wasn’t purely manifested from magic, there needs to be the source, and that source is the costume Minako kept in her suitcase.  As long as the “original”, the source exists, Minako can transform into it whenever she wants to.  But if the original, the source is destroyed/not with her, she will just lose the Sailor V persona completely.
There. Theory end!

Y’know... I always wondered (1) how is it they have their phone when they transformed??? And (2) WHY DOES THE COMMUNICATOR ON THEIR WRIST NOT CONNECT TO THE TELETIA S PHONE LINE????
I’m definitely making the communicator a usable device in my fanfic.
