If you told me 8 years ago that the Terminator installment I liked the least (at the time) would go on to become a “comfort film” I would not believe you.

Terminator's an interesting franchise because they spend the entire first movie establishing one of the most iconic and menacing monsters in cinema history and then they spend every subsequent sequel asking
"but what if it was dad?"

Every CGI Terminator Arnold - Ranked
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
Rating: Surprisingly Not Bad.
Oh the Body Horror for sure, and the upside down helps hide some of the uncanny valley. still weirdly plastic in a way, a bit gooey? Squishy. yeah that's the word, Squishy. I could squish that head like a stress ball.
Terminator Salvation
Rating: Not Great Bob
We stuck a CG mold of Arnold's head from OG Terminator (the original SFX team's muold for the full sized prosthetics was still available) onto some random bodybuilder's bod and its not quite right. And the mould face is immovable, unbreathing, might as well put a Jason Mask.
Terminator: Genisys
Rating: Itchy.
I get itchy looking at this one, I don't know why. They wrapped his face onto something that doesn't quite fit. I feel I could stretch out his facial features like Odo's face at the end of a hard day. The texture is wrong. I'd take the Salvation model out before this one.
Terminator: Dark Fate
Rating: Too Veiny
Points I guess for the fit but those arm veins are distracting. This is also the only time I recall the Arnold model ever having stubble. The closer you are to getting it right tho, the wider the uncanny valley chasm gets, but good choice on the sunglasses. I don't want to see those eyes.

How I’d handle a “The Terminator” remake:
If we’re keeping with the basic story (Terminator is sent to kill Sarah, Kyle Reese is sent to protect her), in order to play up the concept of an all-powerful infiltrator machine, the first third of the movie doesn’t make clear who the villain is. Instead of the hulking, monotone Arnold Schwarzenegger, this version of the T-800 is designed to be so human-like, any person can be fooled. So, less giant bodybuilder, more “Detroit Become Human”.
(Insert modern day commentary on A.I. fooling people)
Just for fun, let’s say our time travelers are played by Chris Evans and Joe Taslim. In case you don’t know these actors, you might recognize them as:
For the first 3rd, we don’t know who is Kyle Reese and who is the Terminator. They both act human enough and are both trying to find Sarah Connor. Also, this version of the Terminator is doing their best to blend in and is committing less crimes, so it’s not as obvious. Now the reason why I chose these actors is to also play around with the audience’s expectations. Chris Evans is known more for his heroic roles while Joe Taslim is known more for his villainous roles. By default, people would probably assume Chris is playing Kyle and Joe is playing the Terminator.
(Also, insert commentary about audiences thinking the darker, non-white guy is more likely to be the villain)
We then cut to the nightclub scene. Both Chris and Joe’s characters have found Sarah Connor. Chris gets to her first while Joe…starts pulling out a shotgun! But just when you think that Joe is the Terminator…Chris pulls out his gun and aims it at Sarah. Joe saves Sarah by shooting at Chris, only to realize his shots were ineffective.
That’s right. It turned out, Chris Evans is the Terminator while Joe Taslim is Kyle Reese.
Now I wanna emphasize, the characters don’t actually have to be played by either Chris or Joe. As long as the Terminator is played by someone known for heroic roles and Kyle is played by someone known for villainous roles, the switcheroo/subversion of expectations/fooling the audience should still work out.

I rarely do this kind of post, but I had to share that I am re-watching Terminator Genisys, because it's ridiculous and not very good at all but the cast is crazy-good. And I enjoy ridiculous movies from time to time.
So I took a picture of my TV for y'all so you could see Matt Smith and Jai Courtney together on screen because most of you will probably never watch this unfortunate addition to the wonderful Terminator franchise.
Emilia Clarke is also in the movie, a bit later.
