10 Tips to Practice Agility at Home with Your Dog

You’ve probably seen agility on television or perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to attend a local agility trial in person. No doubt you thought it looked like a fun activity to do with your dog. Well, it is! Dog agility is one of the fastest growing canine sports in the United States because it’s exciting, challenging, and a whole lot of fun.

Of course, agility classes are a great place to get started in the sport. But perhaps your dog is still a puppy, you’re still training basic obedience, or you want to get a feel for things before investing in lessons. In that case, there are plenty of things you can try at home to prepare your dog for agility obstacles and gauge your interest and his enthusiasm for the activity. And as an extra bonus, even these basic skills can help build your dog’s confidence, decrease his anxiety, increase his trust, and introduce him to new experiences.

1. Ensure Success

Unlike behaviors such as Leave It or Come, agility is just for fun. There’s no need to stress over how quickly your dog learns these new skills. Set your dog up for success by starting small and raising your expectations slowly. Some dogs might be ready to move past the basics in a few weeks, but other dogs need a more patient approach.

Remember to use lots of encouragement and praise when your dog is successful. You should keep your early home training sessions short, no more than five or 10 minutes at a time. Keep it fun and stop before your dog loses interest.

2. Increase Attention

Agility is a team sport. Without guidance from his handler, a dog doesn’t know which obstacle to take next while running around the course. Your agility dog must learn to focus on you despite distractions and exciting surroundings. You can foster greater attention by teaching your dog to make eye contact with you on a cue like Watch Me or Look. Start in a quiet location where you are the most interesting thing around, then slowly build up to more distracting locations.

3. Teach Tricks

Tricks let you improve training techniques like your timing and the placement of rewards. Plus, they increase your dog’s coordination and confidence which will help in the agility ring. Certain tricks are particularly beneficial for dog sports. For example, teach your dog to touch his nose to your hand or a target. By moving your hand or choosing a strategic target placement, you can move your dog or adjust his position. This is handy when teaching him to enter the contact zones at the end of an agility obstacle. Or try training your dog to walk backwards. Back Up teaches your dog basic body awareness because he must pay attention to what all four paws are doing. Finally, teaching your dog to jump through a hoop is a great introduction to the tire jump.

4. Develop Flexibility

Tricks that increase a dog’s flexibility are great for agility training. Spin gets your dog twirling right or left and stretching his sides. In the beginning, you can use your new nose targeting trick to lead him around in a circle. Bow is a great trick for stretching your dog’s back. And finally, consider teaching your dog to weave a figure eight around your legs. The tight turns are great for flexibility and a good introduction to weaving through the weave poles.

5. Work on Handling

So much of what happens on the agility course depends on how well an owner handles his or her dog. That includes sending a dog out in front, moving him from one side to the other, or having him work at a distance. Start by teaching your dog to work comfortably on either side of you. When the dog is comfortable walking on the side you indicate, try jogging and running. Reward him for staying on the same side until you indicate a switch. A treat in the hand on the side you want is a great motivator for most dogs!”

Another introductory handling exercise is teaching your dog to move away from you either to your left or to your right. Try tossing a treat in the desired direction to help him get the basic idea that he doesn’t need to beside you all the time.

Finally, teach your dog to wrap around an object (turn tightly around it). This is a great foundation for turning tightly over or between jumps. Use a cone, barrel, or even a garbage can and send your dog out and around the object. Shaping works well here. Start by rewarding any approach to the object and work your way up to having your dog walk around and return to you.

6. Increase Body Awareness

Surprisingly, dogs don’t have stellar body awareness. Where their front paws lead, the rest of them sort of follows. But with obstacles like the dog walk, your dog needs to be aware of exactly where he’s placing each paw. There are lots of ways to help your dog increase his body awareness.

First, teach him to perch on things. Use an upside-down sturdy box, plastic bin, or even a foot stool and encourage him to interact with it. He can place one or more paws on top, jump on it, or even sit on the top. This is great practice for the pause table. Climbing inside objects will also help him think about body position. Flip the box or bin over and lure him in or reward any exploration until he’s willing to fit his whole body inside. You can even make a line of boxes and teach him to crawl or step through them. Finally, walking through a ladder will get your dog thinking about each footstep. Lay a ladder flat on the ground and with a food lure or a hand touch, entice him to step through the rungs. Once he’s got the hang of it, see if you can get him to increase his speed.

7. Build Confidence With Moving Objects

One of the scariest obstacles for a novice agility dog is the seesaw (or teeter). It seems stable to your dog until he starts to climb. Then suddenly it moves and bangs down on the other end. That’s a lot for your dog to get used to. Instead, start with lower objects that move so your dog gets used to shifting ground beneath his paws. A skateboard or child’s wagon can come in handy here. Or build a wobble board. It’s a piece of plywood, at least two-foot square, with something small underneath, like a brick or a tennis ball, to make it unstable. Reward your dog for any interest in the board, then encourage him to put a paw on top. Eventually, see if you can get him to stand on it completely and balance through the wobble.

8. Conquer Fear of the Dark

Some dogs have no problem running through a tunnel the first time they see one. But many dogs are intimidated by the dark opening. They need to get comfortable with being in a covered space. Although you can buy an agility tunnel to use at home, to get started it’s just as easy to build your own mock tunnel with a blanket and some chairs. Drape the blanket over the spaced-out chairs and teach your dog it’s fun to walk through to the other side. You can even use a large open cardboard box. Keep the length short at first so your dog can see the other side. And don’t force him through. Instead lure him or poke your head through from the other side and encourage him to follow you in.

9. Jump for Joy

Jumping is a critical agility skill and an easy one to practice at home. Use a broomstick or other pole and balance it between two low objects like a stack of books or flower pots. Don’t practice on a slippery surface or you risk your dog injuring himself. And be sure the pole will fall if your dog accidentally hits it, so he’s not hurt.

Remember, agility isn’t a high jump competition. It’s essential to keep the jump height low, at walking level for growing puppies. What a dog can jump and what they should jump are two different things. You don’t want to cause an injury. You can gradually work up to the dog’s competition jump height, but there’s no rush. He’s got plenty of other things to learn before he’s ready to compete.

10. Introduce the Weave Poles

The weave poles are probably the most challenging obstacle to teach, and there are many different training approaches, so you’ll likely need expert guidance to help your dog master this skill. But for an easy at-home version of the weaves, you can stick tomato stakes or similar sized poles into the ground outside. Space the poles 24 inches apart and always ensure your dog enters between the first and second poles in the row from his left side.

By mastering these basic skills at home, you and your dog will be ahead of the game when you enter the sport. You can continue your training by attending agility classes at a local training facility where your dog can practice on actual agility obstacles. For help finding local clubs and a chance to try the obstacles, look for AKC’s My Dog Can Do That events. And when you’re ready, consider the Agility Course Test (ACT) which is an entry-level agility event where beginning dogs and their handlers can test their skills. In no time, you and your dog will be on your way to reaping all the benefits of this challenging and exciting sport.

A-X-L

Here's another story of a boy and his dog—except that the dog is a robotic killing machine, developed by an amoral arms manufacturer for the United States military. What could possibly go wrong?

The answer, expectedly, is a lot, and that doesn't have anything to do with the details of the plot of this strange movie. "A-X-L" wants its eponymous dog to be both cute and threatening, depending on whatever mode the screenplay by director Oliver Daly is going for at any particular moment. Daly goes through a few approaches to this story, taking it from a generic tale of a teenage dirt bike racer who feels stuck in his life and bonds with the robot, to a plot about hiding the dog from various locals and the dastardly arms mogul's mercenaries, and, at one point, to an all-out horror story, in which the robot tries to viciously murder a jerk teenager who, earlier, had attempted to kill it for a laugh and some internet views.

We're introduced to AXL (pronounced, "Axle") in a helpful, introductory computer simulation/marketing slideshow. The acronym stands for "attack," "exploration," and "logistics," meaning that it can display its skills with radar or a massive machine gun, depending on the situation. The war machine was created by Andric Craine (Dominic Rains) in the spirit of dogs serving as a companions/helpers to human warriors throughout history. This robot can pair with a single owner and form a bond that's as strong as any natural canine.

It escapes, naturally, and is eventually found by Miles (Alex Neustaedter), the aforementioned bike racer who doesn't see any way out of his current life. He and his father Chuck (Thomas Jane) manage his racing career and work in an auto shop. His dad wants him to think realistically about his future, but Miles doesn't think he's smart enough to go to college. That about ends any level of character development here.

After being left in the desert by Sam (Alex MacNicoll), a well-funded competitor who's jealous of Miles' talent, Miles discovers AXL hiding in a freight crate. Once the awkward misunderstanding of the robot trying to kill him for invading its territory is resolved, Miles fixes up the artificially intelligent dog (which seems to be damaged and incapacitated quite a lot for an advanced weapon of war). The two become buddies of sorts, and the robot helps quite a bit in Miles' attempts to gain the affections of Sara (Becky G), the daughter of Sam's family housekeeper.

The dog itself is portrayed by a disjointed combination of sleek visual effects (for the moments when it goes into action) and ungainly puppetry (whenever it's shot in close-up). The puppet seems bulkier and far more rickety in its movements than its digital counterpart, which smoothly runs and leaps and flies through the air with jet bursts. In other words, it never feels like a real thing, because it's always obvious that the dog is either a special effect or a puppet—and also obvious when Daly switches between the two.

As for the story, well, there isn't much of one. Miles and Sara try to figure out how to hide the robot while they decide what to do with it. Craine watches AXL bond with Miles through the robot's eyes, believing that he's accidentally stumbled upon a human test subject ("Let's see how this plays out," he says, while watching AXL pin Miles' bully to the ground and threaten the guy with the sharp, whirring gears in its mouth). Miles and Sara keep having to repair the dog, as Craine's corporate goons get closer to them. Chuck offers some sane advice to his son about playing with a machine that was designed to kill, while Craine's right-hand man (played by Lou Taylor Pucci) snivels about his boss' unethical behavior.

Daly doesn't possess any real concerns about the ethical quandary of this dog's existence, of course. The robot is as much a tool for the filmmaker as it is for the villain. The dog is supposed to be loveable, with its red eyes switching to a neon blue whenever it finds a new friend or plays fetch, or a ruthless killing machine, such as when it hunts Sam like some stalking killer in a horror movie (even popping into frame with rough barks and sharp, metal teeth to scare the kids in the audience into the arms of a parent).

What's missing is any genuine personality from the robot (or the human characters, for that matter). After a violent standoff/chase, "A-X-L" promises a sequel (good luck with that) and an improved dog. Hopefully, its temperament gets an update.

Cat Friendly Handling: Your Cat Deserves a Positive Experience at the Veterinary Clinic

Thanks to the internet, cats are the most popular pet, yet they receive less medical care than their canine counterparts. Join me and the Conscious Cat in this two part series on what actually happens when your cat is handled in the veterinary clinic, and how you and your cat can have that positive experience you’ve always wanted.

But first I need to take a step back and explain a few things…

Handling practices for cats

One of the top comments I see in many of my pet related posts on THE CAT LVT is how so many people don’t like how their cat is handled at the veterinary clinic.

In my 20+ years of being in veterinary medicine, I’ve seen quite the evolution of animal restraint in practice. So why are our handling practices for cats still so primitive? Is it because we don’t care to gain further knowledge and move forward in our standards of care? Is it fear of the animal itself? Or is it because “we’ve always done it this way?”

As pet guardians want to be more involved in their pets’ care, and as we treat the newer generation of pets, our industry needs to make much needed changes both in terms of treating patients and to keep a practice thriving. While these changes are happening, it feels like they are happening at a snail’s pace.

As veterinary professionals, we are dedicated to providing excellent care: care and compassion that is paid for by you, the client.

Veterinary medicine is categorized as a “for profit” industry, as pets by law are considered personal property for which you elect us to provide medical care. Yet I see on many Facebook forums for veterinary professionals how anti-cat they can be. How is this possible? We all work in this field for various reasons. To see the negative comments about our feline patients can be disheartening and downright embarrassing at times.

How can we as caregivers boast of our love for animals and then speak of them in a negative manner? I see cats labeled as “demons”, “aggressive”, “awful”, and many four-letter words that don’t need to be repeated. This is not only unprofessional and abhorrent behavior on the professionals’ part, it also means that they either do not understand the language of the cat, or they really don’t want to learn and work with them.

I’m not a fan of working with dogs. I never have been and I’m not afraid of admitting it. I don’t understand their language, and their presence can be too much for me to handle physically. I grew up with dogs. My family still has them as pets. I just prefer not to work with them. So what did I do? I found a practice that was exclusive to the species I wanted to work with: cats. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you don’t prefer to work with a particular species, but if you have made the choice to work at a mixed practice, you are expected to be kind, compassionate, and understanding regardless of what species your patient is.

Understanding cats sets up a more successful vet visit

Learning how a patient acts and reacts in a clinical setting can help set up a more successful visit. We as professionals need to make sure we are prepared in advance to make sure that happens. You as a client need to be honest about how your cat has behaved at previous veterinary visits so we can anticipate your and your cat’s needs accordingly.

The feline patient has a unique body language and can arrive at the clinic already stressed out. Those of us working the veterinary field need to learn how to understand the clear signals cats give us, and adjust our behavior accordingly to be able to work with them safely. In reality, these cats are scared, and are acting out in a manner completely appropriate to a situation they did not willingly put themselves in. Once that is understood, speaking their language gets easier, and they are quite rewarding to work with.

However, we do need your help. We need to know if your cat prefers certain staff members. We need to know if your cat needs or has been given an anxiolytic (medication to ease anxiety before the visit) in the past or might benefit from such medication, or if your cat needs to be sedated to handle.

Outdated restraint and anesthesia techniques

Unfortunately, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) still requires the veterinary professional to learn outdated restraint/anesthesia techniques for companion animals. Restraint methods such as scruffing, and even worse “tanking” or “boxing”, (putting the cat into an oxygen tank and running anesthetic gas into the tank to sedate them) are not only unsafe, but are considered outdated, cruel and unnecessary handling methods. They are also unsafe for the staff performing the task.

Not only does scruffing put dangerous stress on the cervical vertebrae, it can be painful for cats with arthritis and skin ailments. It also heightens the stress response.

Tanking and boxing is one of the worst anesthetic practices, as the patient cannot be accurately monitored. It causes severe cardiac depression. The cat’s fur becomes supersaturated with an anesthetic gas that the staff handling the cats are then going to inhale. A scavenging system is not designed to protect staff from gas inhalation when used with a tank, and is actually a violation of OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration) standards. If a hospital does not care to update their anesthetic protocol to safer methods for pets and staff, it speaks volumes about the medical care provided and how staff are treated.

The AVMA needs to evolve in supporting safer, better methods of restraint and anesthesia techniques for cats, and removing the unsafe and outdated techniques taught in veterinary programs, so that our next generation of veterinary professionals are prepared to provide a more positive experience at the vet office!

There are better, safer methods of restraint for the feline patient.

Our goal in a Cat Friendly Practice®

Our goal in the cat friendly practice is to make sure your cat gets the medical care he or she needs and deserves, and that you understand what we are doing every step of the way. There is no need to be embarrassed at how your cat reacts at the vet office! It’s normal, expected behavior – we understand they are stressed out. We want to make sure that stress level is kept to a minimum for you and your cat(s) by being prepared in advance.

It can provide detailed insight on how we categorize and work with, not against our feline patients. This can help you understand how we train to be better prepared for working with a variety of feline patients. It is encouraging that many clinics are becoming Cat Friendly or Fear Free. The staff at these clinics is specifically trained to have protocols in place to ease the stress of the animals that are presented for care. Look for the Cat Friendly Practice® logo by the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) on a clinic’s website or front door, or look for the Fear Free Certified® logo, as many mixed practices are training in that method because they treat more than just cats.

You want the people who you bring your pet in for medical attention excited about caring for them! If you don’t see that, it is your right as a client to seek care at a clinic where these methods are practiced. It is OK to get a second opinion.

Currently, there are over 26,000 animal hospitals in the United States. If you don’t like the practice you are with, find a practice that fits you and your cat’s needs.

When looking for a feline centric clinic, at a minimum check for the following:

● Cat Friendly Practice© or Fear Free Certified® logo ● Staff bios on a website that state they LOVE working with cats ● Does the practice have a quiet atmosphere, or separate canine and feline lobby areas and separate exam/hospital ward that cater to your cat’s emotional needs? ● Is the clinic willing to get your cat in for an appointment regardless of his or her stress level and previous negative experiences? ● A place that will honestly tell you who is working with your pet, what anesthetics are used, how, and who they are administered by ● Do they practice updated feline medicine and work with you and your cat’s lifestyle by using practice guidelines created by the AAFP? ● Do they perform all necessary tasks such as lab work in front of you or remove the cat from the room? ● Are they using cat friendly methods of handling and restraint? ● Are there credentialed veterinary technicians on staff?

Once you have your questions answered to your satisfaction, make an appointment.

A note from Ingrid: I think it’s a good idea to make an appointment without your cat when you are evaluating a veterinary clinic.  By going to see potential vets without your cat, you will be more relaxed.  Ask for a tour of the hospital.  If you want to speak with a veterinarian, offer to pay for an office visit.  Most vets won’t charge you for this introductory visit, but offering to pay for their time sets the right tone for a future relationship of mutual respect.  Come prepared with a list of questions.
