Gender Discrimation Still Alive.
Gender discrimination in sports can be observed in various forms such as the gender pay gap between the female and male athletes, the sexist attitude towards female sportspersons or even sexual harassment incidents.
Few cases of gender discrimination are:-
BCCI's 2018 retainers contract for its senior women and men players exemplified the same, where the 'A' grade women cricketers (Rs.50 L) receive exactly half the pay of the 'C' grade lowest-earning men cricketers (Rs.1Cr).
Also, the men's team have been offered a salary of 7 crores per annum for cricketers of the 'top performers' or 'A+' grade, leaving behind no such classification for the women's team.  'Hockey', The pinnacle sport of India, also has a ten-fold wage gap between both its men and women's teams. The Indian Football women's team despite their current World ranking of 55 earns between five to eight lakh rupees, while the men's team draw around 70 lakhs per year.
All these contracts should be renegotiated as Women athletes contribute as such as men. These are there rights which they demand as U.S. soccer women players demanded equal pay as they were paid much less than the men's team even when they have won 4 FIFA world cups compared to zero won by men's team.

Studying in the UK for Indian Students in 2021
Indian students are the third biggest group of international students in the UK. As of 2017 to 2018, there were 19,750 Indian students studying in the UK. In fact, in 2019 the number of Indian students in the UK increased by 63%.
Tumblr media
The top-notch quality of education, countless studying opportunities, modern educational approaches, student job opportunities, and future prospects available is an overall exciting studying experience for Indian students.
But, on the flip side, many students from India have difficulties understanding the entire process of applying for a university degree course in the UK because the information is not very clear and often confusing for first-timers. As someone who is not from the UK, it can be difficult to navigate the information to study in the UK for future Indian students.
In this article, we’ve compiled a set of information, in the form of a step-by-step process, that an Indian student would have to go through to study in the UK.
As you may know, there are a large number of universities to choose from in the UK, whereas the number of degree courses on offer is much higher. For international students, including you as a fellow Indian student who may not have much knowledge of universities in the UK does require a little more research before making the final decision (as this will ultimately set you for life !).
However, there’s no need to stress about this too much. As long as you know what your academic goals are and what type of degree or course will get you to your future career, this will be very minor.
Even with the setback of the pandemic, you can reach all universities in the UK online for any further information. So, sit down at your laptop and begin your research with a bit of help from us.
We’ve compiled the list of all recognised universities in the UK… We advise that you do a fast scanning of the list and look into what universities relate to your personal studying goals, financial capacities and the location to study in the UK for Indian students.
List of recognised universities for International Students as of 2021-2022:
University of Oxford –                   Oxford,England
Cambridge University –                 Cambridge England
University College London-           London, England
Imperial College London –              London, England
The University of Edinburgh-         Scotland The University of Manchester-      Manchester, England King’s College London-                   London, England London School of Economics and Political Science- London, England University of Bristol-                      Bristol, England The University of Warwick-          Coventry, England University of Glasgow—                Scotland Durham University—-                   Durham, England University of Sheffield                    Sheffield,England University of Birmingham-          Birmingham,England University of Leeds-                       Yorkshire, England University of Southampton            England University of St Andrews                England
You might want to analyze the university’s study modules first, the proportion of practical sessions during the course (if applicable), the profile and status of its academic staff. These factors will definitely help you decide and choose the most suitable university for you.
Check the requirements
Once you’ve decided about what course you’re willing to enroll in to study in the UK as an Indian Student, it’s time to know what you need to do in order to be admitted through to the final stage. This is to add that you need to check the university’s entry requirements.
There are no typical or rigid requirements for all UK universities, therefore you need to contact the University of your choice by yourself and ask for further details. Overall, entry requirements for Indian students in the UK differ depending on the type of course or degree you want to apply for.
The list of documents required to study in the UK as an Indian student below:
Recognized Qualifications – Transcript of Grades – English Proficiency – Motivation or Reference Letter – Relevant Work Experience/Internships
Please be aware that qualifications attained overseas are most of the time not recognized in the UK unfortunately. For this reason, you may be required to attend a foundation year (1 year) to gain certain knowledge in particular subjects that your actual degree is concerned with. Motivation, Reference letters, and proof of work experience are optional and are usually required in addition to your application at highly-reputed universities (as competition and selection criteria are tight). These documents are mostly required when you apply for a postgraduate degree also.
Always keep in mind that this initial stage is very crucial when applying to study in the UK as an Indian student because every detail counts a great deal. If your application paperwork doesn’t contain all documents as precisely required by the university it may lead to your admission delay and eventually to not even be enrolled. If necessary write them down and mark each document you have completed as you go through them. This is your future!
Never hesitate to reach your university by email and enquire about every issue that may get in your way during the whole process of your application.
After you have completed the documents required of you it is time to submit your application. Typically, international applications to study in the UK are collected through online means. The majority of UK universities are part of the joint online application platform called UCAS.
To upload your documents you must scan them into a PDF or JPG format. In addition, the application form may also include standardised information about you which you have to fulfill properly.
Wait for your admission letter
As soon as you complete your application and send this off, the University of your choice will send you an email to confirm they have received an application from you. Note that UK universities collect a large number of applications, therefore, it normally takes time to receive an answer. In normal conditions, the university will notify you within a few weeks whether or not you’re given a place at their university or not.
Get your student visa ASAP
You must get a student visa in order to be permitted to study in the UK as an Indian student or international student. Student visa in the UK is regarded as ‘Tier 4’. You can apply for your Tier 4 visa once the university of your choice confirms that you have been accepted. Weighed 95 kg after injury in 2015, felt retirement talks were right: Shami | Cricket News
New Post has been published on https://jordarnews.in/weighed-95-kg-after-injury-in-2015-felt-retirement-talks-were-right-shami-cricket-news/
Weighed 95 kg after injury in 2015, felt retirement talks were right: Shami | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: India’s pace spearhead Mohammad Shami has opened up about the knee injury he suffered in 2015 and the speculation thereafter that his career was coming to an abrupt end. Earlier this year, Shami had revealed that he had played in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with a fractured knee. He was the second highest wicket-taker for India (17 wickets from 7 matches) behind Umesh Yadav (18 wickets) and the fourth-highest overall in the tournament.
“In 2015 and even back in 2018 when I faced an injury, the media said that my career would be over. The media reported that even if I come back, I won’t be the same Shami, and I agree that I am not the same that I was a few years back,” said the Indian pacer while speaking on Amstrad InsideSport Face 2 Face cricket series. “And that’s the only correct thing that they have said. This comment motivated me a lot to do better in the game for which I am known,” he added. The right-arm pacer, who is currently playing for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL), also emphasised on the importance of mental strength. “Everyone faces some problem or the other in their lives. To set a goal and to achieve it, you need to plan a chart and work accordingly. I believe that everyone has to face a difficult phase in life to refocus and work in the right direction,” he said. “I remember after my injury, I weighed almost 95 kg and I felt that what people are saying is true and I can’t do anything about it. But then I had a ball next to me throughout the 60 days of my bed rest. You don’t have to forget things in life and you have to learn and adapt to the situation and you can’t lie to yourself, especially with regard to your profession,” Shami added. Shami has been in great form for the Kings XI so far in IPL 2020, having picked up eight wickets in four games. The 30-year-old further spoke about his time away from cricket due to Covid-19 and about his time practising alone. “When the lockdown started, I took 20-25 days off, but I pushed myself to utilise all the things I had which were needed for practice. Even though it gets a bit boring to practice alone, luckily I had my friend and my brother for the practice. The training during the lockdown and a month of practice in the UAE helped me keep the momentum,” Shami said. According to the Indian pace spearhead, a human body doesn’t function like a car wherein a tank could be filled with petrol and it will run smoothly thereafter. “Obviously, it takes time for any person to get back on the routine. It gets difficult for even office workers, so imagine how difficult it must be for a sportsperson to step out from the leisure of their homes,” said Shami. “The most difficult thing for a sportsperson is to maintain his weight and fitness levels which becomes very crucial. I am very happy that I have been able to utilise what I got from cricket to keep myself in good shape,” he added.

Indian Sportsman Bajrang Punia
Tumblr media
Born in Haryana, Bajrang Punia is a freestyle wrestler from India. This 20-year old promising Indian sports person started wrestling at the age of seven. Punia was trained at the regional center of Sports Authority of India (SAI) located in Sonepat. He participates in the 65 kg wrestling category and is the winner of three medals at the World Wrestling Championship.  Bajrang's first international victory was in 2013 when he won the bronze at the Asian Wrestling Championship after which he won many medals at the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games, and several other tournaments.
Childhood Days
Hailing from a small village in the Jhajjar district of Haryana, Punia was encouraged by his father to venture into the avenue of sports. Not having enough money to receive training in sports like cricket or tennis, he started to take part in free sports like wrestling and Kabaddi. Initially having the hope of playing Kabaddi for Haryana Punia eventually became more adept at the game of wrestling.
A professional Indian Wrestler, Bajrang's father, Balvant Singh Punia, began his son's training at a local mud wrestling school. Soon his family shifted to Sonepat so that he could receive better training at SAI. From his early childhood days, Punia would follow the moves and techniques of famous wrestlers and work on his strength and agility. Growing up in a poor family, these wrestling stalwarts were his superheroes, his only inspirations.
Punia was greatly inspired by the famous Indian sports personality, Yogeshwar Dutt, who is an Olympic medalist in wrestling. His path to glory began on a prosperous note as he won the bronze in 2013 at the World Championship, Budapest. He continued to win yet another bronze at the Asian Championship 2013, and a silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, 2014. In 2015, Punia was honored with the Arjuna Award for his contribution to the game of wrestling. Currently, this young sports talent also works for the Indian Railway to provide support to his family.
In the Spotlight
Inspired by Yogeshwar Dutt who later became one of his mentors, Bajrang Punia has laid a flourishing career in wrestling. In the 2013 Asian Wrestling championships held in New Delhi, Punia represented India for the first time. Even though he lost the game, in the same year the freestyle wrestler bagged the bronze at the World Wrestling Championships.
In the next year, Bajrang's unmatched skills and technique in the game fetched him the Silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, 2014. Punia's career in sports has seen an upward rise ever since as he kept winning medals for the nation. Punia next won a Gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Championship in Singapore.
In the 2017 India Asian Wrestling Championship held in New Delhi, this famous Indian sportsperson won the gold medal earning accolades for himself. The next year, in the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia he won the gold medal by competing in the under 65kg freestyle wrestling category. 2018 won him yet another gold at the Asian Games, where he defeated Takatani Daichi.
Success Story
Not being born in a prosperous family, Bajrang's climb to success was filled with hardships indeed. However, he always had the strength and support of his family to walk on the path of his ambitions. Bajrang Punia with his flourishing accomplishments has become the role model for youngsters in the nation. Not only does he have to devote long hours to the practice of his game, but Punia also dutifully does his job at the Indian Railway.
After winning the bronze in 2013, Punia has put in even more dedication to his practice, determined to win all the other tournaments that he eventually took part in, and performed incredibly too. Throughout his victories and achievements, Punia is known to have been a humble man and has always strived towards improvement, an inherent trait of every true winner.
In the Pro Wrestling League that was spread across six cities, Bajrang fetched at Rs. 29.5 lakh, and the wrestler was picked by the JSW owned Bangalore franchise. On 18th January 2020, Bajrang emerged victorious over Jordan Oliver in the 65kg freestyle category of the Rome Ranking Series and became one of the great contemporary sports personalities of India, in the game of wrestling.
The Future
In 2019 Bajrang once again won a bronze at the World Championships, for a second time. This led to his much-deserved selection for the Tokyo Olympics, 2020 in the 65kg freestyle wrestling event. But as circumstances continue to pose threat because of the COVID 19 pandemic, we are yet to witness Punia's feat in the event. The sports icon has also donated his six month's salary to Haryana's COVID relief fund.
However, Punia is in constant touch with his Georgian coach, who instructs him online. Thus this famous sports personality of India is keeping himself physically and psychologically fit to pick up where he left off, once the game commences for him.

Sound of silence, the stadium cut - other sports
https://liveindiatimes.com/sound-of-silence-the-stadium-cut-other-sports/
When the most influential career in Indian sport ended in 2013 – which momentarily felt like all of sport itself had come to a halt, like it has today – the retiree was unequivocal about what he would miss most. “The memories that you have left me with will be with me forever and ever. Especially ‘Sachin, Sachin’ – that will reverberate in my ears till I stop breathing,” said Sachin Tendulkar at the end of his farewell speech, blinking back tears and directly addressing the spectators at the Wankhede Stadium.
Not his strokeplay, which stretched our imagination. Not even his hundredth hundred, which stretched his career into a 24th year. Only the sound of the crowd, which forever reminded him of its presence with a chant of his name; and by his own admission, continues to do so.
For a sportsperson, any sportsperson, the sound of the crowd is the first and possibly the least adulterated feedback. Before that shot is beamed to a million television sets, before it causes a Twitter trend and before it earns trophies and makes the player richer by several zeroes, the sound of the crowd is the most instantaneous paycheck. The kind of paycheck that makes even the all-time greats—with career-earnings the size of a small nation’s GDP —coming back for more. Just ask the greatest of them all, Roger Federer.
In 2018, Federer won his 20th (and thus far final) Grand Slam at the Australian Open. He did not break down when he accepted and kissed the trophy, or even when he thanked his team for helping a near-38-year-old body achieve the ludicrous. But when he addressed the crowd at the end of the speech, his eyes welled up. “You guys. You fill the stadiums, you make me nervous, you make me go out and practice. I’d just like to thank you for everything,” he said with a lump in his throat. “It wouldn’t be the same without you guys,” he said, a hand on his face to wipe away the rolling tears.
Federer is usually an emotional man. But these tears felt different from his usual tears of joy. So, he was asked about it in the press conference that followed. “It was because of the full crowd. No people in the stadium wouldn’t make me emotional, I’ll tell you that,” he said and pointed at the trophy beside him. “This is for them.”
Sporting events are slowly beginning to resume, but behind closed doors. At least for the near future, the new normal will be the empty stadium. No matter how big the sport, or how big the match, it will be played to vacant seats. The sound, fury and joy of the crowds will be missed—by those playing, and those of us watching on TV. To illustrate this point, allow me to take you back to the Delhi Test of 2017 – a game of cricket so far ahead of its time that the Sri Lankan team played with face masks, albeit due to pollution and not Covid-19.
On the fifth and final day of the Test, a large enough crowd had packed the stands of the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium; they were largely quiet as the game moved towards a draw. After a long period of lull in the stands, Virat Kohli had had enough. Kohli’s bowlers were tiring and he decided to administer them with the most effective drug – love from the crowd.
From his fielding position in the slip cordon, the Indian captain waved his right hand at the West Stand. When he had their attention, Kohli cupped a palm behind his right ear – Hulk Hogan style – and the West Stand roared. Then he held his hand out, like a traffic cop, and the noise vanished. He turned towards East Stand and repeated his gestures – hand wave, cupped ear, palm out – and East Stand obediently followed.
Kohli laughed and held both his hands out—when he raised one hand a stand bellowed and when he raised the other hand the other stand bellowed. He moved his hands rapidly, like a man juggling invisible balls, and the Kotla came alive. Next over, a 198-ball stand was felled with Dinesh Chandimal’s wicket.
In the post-pandemic world of sport, what sounds will stadiums produce in the absence of spectators?
EMPTY GALLERIES
Domestic sport in India, including cricket, is largely played in front of empty galleries. The handful that dot these yawning and silent stands are sports journalists. As a social experiment, we asked the sports reporters in this newspaper to relive their most cherished experience from an empty ground. Almost unanimously, these experiences hinged on sound.
One journalist had a vivid recollection of the elemental sounds of the kick of a football, amplified by the acoustics of a spectatorless stand in Delhi.
“Bhaichung Bhutia was curling freekicks all by himself. He lined up the ball, ran up, and kicked with a resounding, short, thud. If you have not heard that sound from up close, it is difficult to grasp just how hard a ball can be hit,” he said. “When the ball hit the crossbar, there was another thunderous report – a metallic ringing that echoed across the ground.”
Even during the big games, that metallic ringing can be heard across most football venues in India (save for a few grounds in Kolkata and the states of Goa and Kerala). Our football correspondent remembered the sound of laptop keyboards clacking louder than the spectators during a Delhi Dynamos game in the Indian Super League.
This is true for Indian tennis as well, outside of the odd Davis Cup tie or the annual ATP event. Here’s one reporter’s experience at a tennis tournament in Delhi: “Match after match one could hear the exhausted players’ heavy breathing. But even louder were their strokes. The ball hitting the boards sounded like the beating of a drum.”
At the end of one match, a player walked up to this reporter and asked, “How did I play?” There was no one else there to give him feedback.
Tennis is anyway a sport played in silence. Noise erupts only between points; just before the ball is tossed up in the air again the crowd either self regulates or is policed by the chair umpire.
Even at the Grand Slams, if you walk a few yards away from the show courts, the only sounds that can be heard from the matches on the side courts are grunts and shots – before, during and after a point.
“The US Open in New York is the biggest and noisiest Grand Slam. But a few metres away from Arthur Ashe Stadium, the only ‘noise’ is of the ball smacking the strings of the racquet, the effort put in by the players and the odd applause from their coaching staff,” said one of our correspondents. This is perhaps what the largest tennis arena in the world, the Arthur Ashe Stadium, too will sound like on resumption – and for that matter Rod Laver Arena, Wimbledon’s Centre Court and Phillippe Chatrier too.
Which brings us to our national obsession, cricket. There is a precedence of a high-profile international game being played behind closed doors, even if the doors were closed on the spectators only for a few minutes. This occurred at the Asian Test Championships contest between India and Pakistan in Kolkata in 1999 – a Test better remembered for Shoaib Akhtar’s consecutive yorkers that cleaned up the stumps of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar in India’s first innings.
But our cricket correspondent remembered the match for the surreal and then-unprecedented scenes that unfolded on the fifth day of the match.
“Start of the fifth day, India needed 65 runs with four wickets in hand.
But once the penultimate wicket of Kumble fell, the Eden Gardens crowd lost its cool and flung missiles on to the field, prompting the police to clear every stand until the stadium was a concrete behemoth,” he said. “It took Pakistan exactly 10 balls to finish off proceedings – Akhtar dismantling Prasad’s stumps with yet another yorker. Even on TV, the sound of the clattering stumps echoed louder than the Akhtar yorkers that had castled Tendulkar and Dravid earlier. Defeat had never sounded this deafening.”
This is possibly the closest description to what international cricket will feel like in the near future. But make no mistake: when your wait for the resumption of sport ends, the players’ wait for your presence in the stands would have only just begun.

BHIM-UPI TOISA: PV Sindhu shines brightest amongst sports winners for 2019 - Times of India
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/bhim-upi-toisa-pv-sindhu-shines-brightest-amongst-sports-winners-for-2019-times-of-india/
BHIM-UPI TOISA: PV Sindhu shines brightest amongst sports winners for 2019 - Times of India
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: PV Sindhu, Rohit Sharma, Rani, Saurabh Chaudhary, Dutee Chand, Manu Bhaker, Bajrang Punia and Jaspal Rana are some of the prominent names that featured among the winners at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) powered by BHIM-UPI, which honoured the best performances in Indian sport in 2019 at a glittering awards function in Delhi on Thursday.
The who’s who of India’s sports fraternity were present at the awards ceremony, including one of the country’s most legendary sports persons, hockey Olympian Balbir Singh Sr, who was part of three of India’s gold-medal winning teams at the Olympics, besides being the manager of the squad that lifted the 1975 World Cup.
The event was also attended by a few very special guests – members of the 1980 Olympics gold medal winning hockey team, including captain V Basakaran, MM Somaiya, Mervyn Fernandes, Zafar Iqbal, Surinder Singh Sodhi and MK Kaushik.
Tumblr media
Sindhu’s historic feat of becoming the first Indian to win the badminton World Championships remained unmatched and she was, therefore, named the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’, besides being the joint winner in the Jury’s Choice Award for ‘Badminton Player of the Year’ along with Sai Praneeth. Sindhu, who is currently ranked sixth in the BWF Rankings, completed a hat-trick by winning the ‘Unbreakable Spirit of Sport award’ as well. She is set to enter the Tokyo Olympics in an endeavour to improve on the women’s singles silver medal she won in Rio four years ago.
The men’s award in the badminton category went to 2019 BWF World Championships bronze medallist Sai Praneeth, who created history by becoming only the second man after Prakash Padukone to win a medal at the premier tournament.
The elite panel of jury members that picked the ‘Jury’s Choice Award’ in 19 categories included former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir; former India football captain Bhaichung Bhutia; hockey’s Olympic gold medallist Zafar Iqbal; Asian Games silver medallist and former athlete Ashiwni Nachappa; the first Indian paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics, Devendra Jhajaria; and Chief Editor of Times Internet Limited, Rajesh Kalra.
The ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award went to Rohit, who set the 2919 ICC World Cup ablaze with a record five centuries, besides crossing many more landmarks in the year. Women’s hockey captain Rani, whose goal helped the team qualify for its second consecutive Olympic appearance, was named the ‘Hockey Player of the Year’. She was also selected as the ‘Inspiration of the Year’ for her exploits in 2019, which also saw Rani winning the ‘World Games Athlete of the Year’ award — the first Indian and the first hockey player to achieve the feat.
Tumblr media
In the men’s category for ‘Hockey Player of the Year’, Harmanpreet Singh was named the winner, as he turned into a leader of India’s defence, which played a major role in India achieving its best ever world rank of No. 4.
The ‘Team of the Year’ award was won by the men’s hockey team which achieved its best ever FIH rank of 4, besides qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. Meanwhile shooting star turned National junior coach Jaspal Rana was chosen as the ‘Coach of the Year’ for producing talents like Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary.
Incidentally, Chaudhary and Bhaker were joint winners in the ‘Shooter of the Year’ category. In a pathbreaking year for Indian shooting, the duo bagged the 10m Air Pistol mixed team gold in each of the four ISSF World Cups in 2019, besides bagging the Tokyo Olympics quotas in the men’s and women’s 10m Air Pistol.
The other male-female winning combos included Anish Bhanwala (shooting) and Lalremsiami (hockey) as the ‘Emerging Players of the Year’. While Bhanwala won a gold and a bronze in 25m Standard Pistol at the two 2019 World Cups, hockey striker Lalremsiami was named the ‘FIH Rising Star of the Year for 2019’ — a first for an Indian woman. In athletics, Tajinder Pal Singh Toor and Dutee Chand bagged the ‘Athlete of the Year’ awards. Shot-putter Toor won gold medals at the Asian Athletics Championships, while Dutee’s history-making moment came at the World Universiade, where she became the first Indian woman sprinter to win gold.
Amit Panghal and Lovlina Borgohain were the joint winners in the boxing category, while Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa were selected as the best squash players.
Panghal’s memorable 2019 included a golden hat-trick at the Strandja Memorial, Asian Boxing Championships and India Open; and his best moment came when he won his maiden medal, a silver, at the World Championships.
Borgohain too had a brilliant year in the boxing ring, where she claimed a bronze at the Strandja Memorial, gold at the Salam Umakhanov Memorial and a bronze at the World Championships.
Squash star Ghosal won the Asian Individual Squash Championships, which helped him enter the top 10 of PSA Rankings. Both those achievements were a first for an Indian male squash player. Chinappa, on the other hand, defended her Asian Individual Squash Championships crown and then won a record record 17th title at the National Squash Championships.
Top Indian wrestler Punia started 2019 by winning the gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships. Later in the year, his consistency at the international level earned him the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. At the World Championships, he had to settle for a bronze medal, but it helped him bag an Olympic quota for India in the 65kg freestyle category. Vinesh had a successful run in 2019, which culminated with her maiden medal (bronze) at the World Championships and a quota place at the Tokyo Olympics.
Archers Deepika Kumari and Abhishek Verma were also among the winners. Deepika won gold at the 2019 Asian Championships and with it an Olympic quota in women’s recurve.
Mirabai Chanu made a terrific return from injury in 2019, with gold medals at the EGAT Cup and the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship. Sathish Sivalingam was the male winner in the weightlifting category.
At the World Championships in September 2019, Chanu improved on her own national record and came agonisingly close to a podium finish before settling for a fourth-place finish in the 49kg category. In the process, she became the first woman weightlifter from the country to breach the magical mark of 200kg.
Among the other ‘Jury’s Choice’ award winners were billiards and snooker player Sourav Kothari, chess star R Pragnanandha and football icon Sunil Chhetri.
In para-sports, shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Manasi Joshi were the jury’s pick as winners for their feats at the 2019 World Championships, where they both won gold medals in the singles categories becoming world champions.
Bhagat became a force to reckon with in 2019, winning twin gold medals at the Para-Badminton World Championships in the men’s singles (SL3 category) and men’s doubles (SL3-4 category). An IIT graduate, Bhagat contracted polio as a 7-year-old but never let that impede his ambitions.
Joshi secured her maiden gold at the Para World Championship. An engineer by qualification, Manasi lost her left leg in an accident in 2011. She enrolled at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad in 2018 and since then has not looked back.
Some of the special awards given on the occasion included the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Bhaichung Bhutia, ‘Mentor of the Year’ to India’s national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and ‘Youth Icon of the Year’ to Vijender Singh, the Olympic-medal winning boxer who turned pro a few years ago.
Also, the state of Odisha was conferred with the award for ‘Change Agent of the Year’ for its contribution towards sports, and the Reliance Foundation was named the ‘Corporate Supporter of the Year’.

Women all the way- When sailor Nethra Kumanan and footballer Bala Devi set example with their extra-ordinary feat
Tumblr media
Indian women sportsperson proved their mettle once again as Nethra Kumanan becomes the first Indian to win a Sailing World Championship medal and Bala Devi is set to become the first Indian woman footballer to play professional Football.
NETHRA KUMANAN
Chennai-based sailor Nethra Kumanan became the first Indian woman to win a World Championship medal when she clinched a bronze in the Hempel World Cup Series at Miami. She was in the lead on multiple occasions in the Laser Radial Class of Sailing but eventually finished in third spot.
The laser radial is a small, dinghy-style boat that is sailed by one person. It has a shorter mast and reduced sail area, allowing light sailors to sail in heavy winds. Nethra represented the country in this event in the 2014 and the 2018 Asian Games, finishing fourth in the latter event.
But this time Kumanan succeeded to have a podium finish. She finished behind Erika Reineke of the USA and Vasilieia Karachaliou of Greece. The official twitter page of World Sailing exclaimed, “What a finale!............And a brilliant Medal Race win for Nethra Kumanan gives her bronze!”
Nethra Kumanan started sailing at a summer camp that was organised by the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association. She started training professionally in 2013. An engineering student from SRM College in Chennai, Kumanan is now eyeing to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She will have a chance to qualify for Olympics if she finishes in the top-two at the Asian Sailing Championships that is scheduled from March 15, 2020 at Abu Dhabi.
“We have never been to the Olympics for Sailing before. I guess my goal will be to perform in the next Olympics. This time, I have a really good shot at qualifying and I am doing the best I can do, obviously. But to really achieve something I’d give myself another four years,” Nethra Kumanan said to Olympic Channel.
BALA DEVI
Bala Devi, who has a prolific record at the domestic level with over 100 goals in 120 games and 52 goals in 58 games for the national team, has been signed by renowned Scottish club Rangers FC on an 18-month deal. This has made 22-year old Bala Devi the first Indian woman to become a professional footballer anywhere in the world. She also has become the first Asian international to join Rangers Women.
Amy McDonald, Women's and Girls' Football manager at Rangers FC welcomed Bala to the club and said, “Bala is a playmaker who likes to play as a number 10 and we believe she will contribute goals and assists to the team. She will provide us with an attacking threat and a versatility that we can utilise to our benefit going into the 2020 season.”
Bala Devi was named as All India Football Federation (AIFF) Women's Player of the Year twice, in 2015 and 2016. She has been the top scorer in the Indian Women's League for the past two seasons.  Bala had travelled to Glasgow in November 2019, after which Rangers decided the deal. But there was a process of legal clearance as she did not automatically fulfill the eligibility criteria to play in the United Kingdom.
The Indian women’s team is ranked 57th in the world but the eligibility criteria for a woman footballer to play in the UK specify that the player's country should be ranked in the top-40 of the FIFA rankings. The criteria also refer that the player should have featured in a minimum of 75% of international matches in the last two years. Bala did not fulfill both the criteria.
Thus, a special appeal was made to a six-member panel to the Scottish Football Association (SFA) wherein the head coach, technical team and a lawyer from Rangers presented the case. From India, Bala Devi was officially recommended AIFF President Praful Patel, Indian women’s team coach Maymol Rocky, former Indian women’s team skipper Bembem Devi, ex-player Bhaichung Bhutia and Renedy Singh and Indian men’s team captain Sunil Chhetri.
Considering these facts, the Scottish panel unanimously voted in favour of granting work permit on the basis of special exemption to Bala Devi. The deal is now subject to international clearance, which will be completed on February 3.
Sunil Chhetri, in his twitter account, wrote, “You're going where no Indian woman footballer has gone, and you will be carrying the dreams of us all. Good luck, Bala. Do us proud.”
Rangers FC is Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 team, which is the premier division for women’s football in Scotland. Rangers Head of Academy Craig Mulholland said, “I would like to warmly welcome Bala to both Rangers and to Glasgow. Rangers are committed to building a successful women’s team for years to come and the acquisition of the talent like Bala is another step towards our goal of domestic and European success.”
