Die Mimeoplasm, Die
Tumblr media
What's in a name?
Well, in the case of a legendary creature, it's a big part of what makes them stand out in the crowd. Generally speaking, though, they're often a bit formulaic. It's X, the Ys all day long, and as much as it undeniably works, it's always fun to buck trends. So:
Design a brand-new legendary creature whose name begins with "The."
So, that would be something in the same vein as The Goose Mother, The Archamandrite, or The Ancient One. And I am specifically looking for the article "the," before you go and submit Theodore, the Technically Correct. As well, in case "brand-new" wasn't clear enough, no pre-existing Magic characters allowed.
The challenge here is going to be inventing a character whole-cloth with only a title. Titles say a lot about someone, but so often the name is what completes the metaphorical puzzle. Not to say you can't include a name, as The Infamous Cruelclaw proves you can fit one in with a bit of creative formatting. The best entries will ideally be the most compelling characters, be that flavorfully or mechanically.
Now get out there, and do The Work! —@spooky-bard

Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Ooze
Tumblr media
Art by Simon Dominic
What is an Ooze (flavorfully)?
Oozes are semi-fluid, animate blobs made of countless single-celled organisms fused together to work as one. Oozes have no distinct body parts on anything larger than the cellular level, an amalgamation of amoeba-like creatures acting in unison, like a group of robot lions combined into a single, larger robot.
Oozes are free to grow to any size, can split apart, and exist solely to find food.
Though real-world oozes are rarely larger than a square inch or so, many in Magic’s multiverse are large enough to easily devour a human whole. Though oozes appear on most planes, they’re thankfully quite rare everywhere outside of a Simic lab.
What is an Ooze (mechanically)?
Oozes are primarily green creatures and tend to have mechanics based on growth, multiplication, or both. Though this is usually in the form of +1/+1 counters or making Ooze tokens, it’s far more likely to get weird than a Hydra is, such as having power based on the number of something you control or in your graveyard or somehow absorbing other creatures.  Starting size for an ooze varies wildly, but even the small ones tend to have a lot of potential for growth.
Tumblr media
Can I make an Ooze deck?
Ooze Tribal is absolutely possible. It’s not the fastest midrange option, but there are enough strong Oozes that can be hard to deal with and ways to flood the board that Ooze tribal’s got some answers for most problems. The biggest issue is going to be dealing with aggressive fliers while you build up, so you may want to devote a bit of extra removal for that. Fortunately, Green gets access to both fight and flying hate. For 60 card, mono-Green should work fine.  If you’re a very casual playgroup, try finding a playset of S.N.O.T for the one-drop creature this deck could really use.
For Commander, you’re going to need to expand into other colors to get enough Oozes. Black and Blue are both options, neither really having quite enough Oozes to be happy with but both providing a lot of options in their other spells. I’ll always lean Black in tribal decks for Patriarch’s Bidding and Haunting Voyage as board wipe protection that a lot of tribes really need. Despite the existence of Red oozes, they’re just not good options. Two of them have cumulative upkeep costs and one is basically useless. Bloodhall Ooze can be amazing, but not worth running the color for.
The Mimeoplasm makes for a reasonable commander, providing all three colors, but its abilities don’t really leverage an Ooze tribal strategy. Aeve, Progenitor Ooze, absolutely leans Ooze tribal, but comes with the drawback of locking you into mono-green.
Umori makes for an interesting commander option as a Green/Black option. Ignoring the companion ability, it’s still a 4/5 for 4 that makes your creatures cost 1 less. You don’t need to limit your deckbuilding if it’s your commander.
Sluurk, All-Ingesting, is not inherently the strongest, but its ability is clearly built for +1/+1 counters that Oozes often have and that keyword of “Partner” opens up many, many options. Most notably, Reyhan, Last of the Abzan works very well with many Oozes. Unfortunately, the only Blue-Black partner is basically useless for our purposes.
If you don’t feel the need for your commander to be an Ooze, Muldrotha is in the right colors and is honestly just a complete monster. Cazur and Ukkima can work quite well, too, as Cazur’s ability to put +1/+1 counters on your creatures naturally combines with the primary Ooze plan. You could also pair Reyhan with any Blue partner to get all three colors.
Tumblr media
Is Ooze a good creature type?
Ooze is a great creature type. Ooze stands alongside Hydra as a clear example of Green’s idea of unmitigated growth but does it in a very different way. While Hydras often have X in the cost and can come in at any size based on the mana spent on them, Oozes tend to start small and grow over time. Some of them get big, some of them multiply, but it usually succeeds at that sense of the slow consumption of everything around them.  Oozes have a bit of tribal support, but it’s all weird and unique tribal support. Even the traditional “Lord” for Oozes, Biowaste Blob, reproduces to give increasingly larger boosts.
It’s no secret that Ooze is one of Mark Rosewater’s favorite creature types, and the careful love we see for Ooze and the unique Ooze designs aren’t a coincidence. Ooze is a well designed type with a lot of great stuff going for it, and even if it’s not going to become the big sensation in any set it’s still going strong.

I don't normally try and ask my mutuals to specifically engage with a post, but my MtG mutuals I genuinely want some feedback on this. If you had been my opponent here, what would you have done? I'm dying for answers here.
So I was playing my The Mimeoplasm deck last night for the first time in a while.
Tumblr media
And I got the absolute most insane Fact or Fiction I've ever seen in person.
Tumblr media
Like, so insane I snagged a picture of the decision space hell I had just inflicted on the table:
Tumblr media
That's a Burning-Rune Demon, Pull from Tomorrow, Eternal Eitness, Reanimate, and Jin-Gitaxas Augur. Individual pictures below the cut.
Like, I'm the one *piloting the deck* and I've got no fuckin clue how I'd split that. For a little bit of context, it's turn 5, I'm on 5 cards in hand, and I am at present missing my land drop for turn. I had just been hoping for my land for turn plus some extra value. My opponents forget that second key fact that I have 5 cards in hand, and hand me back a 5-0 pile. Either everything is graveyard, or everything is hand. So I gleefully take everything to hand then just discard the Jin, the Demon and a card I'd already been holding to hand size and oh man the look on my opponents' faces as they realized the cataclysmic fuck up here.

I know all of you follow me for my recent return to playing Magic the Gathering, so you will be very excited to know I have finally finished my spooky decks for Halloween.
And by spooky, I mean the commanders are creatures that might be Halloween related? Anyways, for y’all interested here are my shitty Halloween EDH decks. 🎃🦇
Elenda, the Dusk Rose - Scary vampire! Deck came together because I saw the card art and fell in love with it, so I wanted to make a deck using her. General idea behind this deck is tokens, life gain, and more tokens.
Thantis, the Warweaver - Giant spider, creepy crawlies! Honestly I just happened to add Thantis with some other cards to a cart a long ass time ago to qualify for free shipping because I liked her ability. This deck is literally just to fuck with my friends by making them engage (they don’t like to).
Mimeoplasm - And nothing scarier than oozes. Last but not least I wanted a tribal deck. Was gonna do zombies or something else, but I was going through my WIPs and saw I had an okay number of oozes finally put together, so welcome to my ooze deck. The goal? Ooze!

Don’t believe what the “scientists” tell you about extinction. You know about the meteor and the ice age and the volcanoes and blah blah blah. Yeah, maybe some of that stuff happened. But what really truly snuffed out our big reptilian evo buds? How about a mean green dino-eating alien plasmoid. It came to our beautiful blue marble by hitching a ride on that meteor everyone likes to give credit to and quickly started eating up the prehistoric population. It took on the qualities of its prey, simultaneously feeding itself and studying the DNA of dinosaurs. Once, it even grew a T-Rex for an arm. Can you believe that?! A T-REX ARM. Okay, so if this thing was so awesome, then what happened to it, right? Well, that’s the kicker. After it wrecked the Cretaceous Period, it had an extensive power nap. Like millions of years until like only the early 1800s or so. The plasmoid has since evolved by consuming our species, gaining knowledge and power. And that is where things get crazy. I know where or who the plasmoid is. All my evidence points to this one individual….. The President of the United States.

State of the Union | Spring 2023
Tumblr media
I do A LOT of deckbuilding and evaluation. Every once in a while it probably makes sense to check in on the overall status of my collection and deck library. Things move pretty fast these days. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
I plan on doing this semi-regularly throughout the year, looking back on the same set of questions.
What decks do I currently have built?
I am currently sitting on 14 decks.
Pako & Haldan  |  Play from Exile
Vadrik, Astral Archmage  |  Spell reduction and copy
Daryl, Hunter of Walkers  |  Draw all the cards, Gruul Enchantress
Reyhan & Jeska  |  +1/+1 Counter and Sac
Hopper and Lucas  |  Affinty for Artifacts
Inquisitor Greyfax  |  Tappers and Fliers
Kelsien the Plague  |  Political Experience Matters
Obeka, Brute Chronologist  |  Tokens and EOT Shenanigans
Jaheira Feywild Visitor  |  Token Ramp
Mike & Max  |  Naya Value Train
Falco Sparra  |  Top Deck Matters
Tymna & Anara  |  Life gain and card draw
Belbe  |  Play all YOUR cards
Mimeoplasm  |  Rogue Mill
14 is too many decks, but some of these are permanent locks.
What s my current favorite deck?
Usually, I’d say Pako & Haldan because it is aggressive, while still giving you plenty of interaction and random decisions. But right now, I am very into Reyhan & Jeska. It is the most aggressive deck I have, but with all the good value pieces you get from Jund. It gets to play with some of the great old Jund cards, but in a way that feels modern.
What is my newest deck?
I just built up Obeka. It’s still a little rough. There aren’t any extra turn spells, but you get to play with crazy cards like Zilarian of the Claw and Sneak Attack. I expected it to be a high value-driven deck (which it is), but it also has the ability to be incredibly explosive.
What decks have been recently retired?
Flamewar was the most recently retired deck. I liked her a lot. Rakdos artifacts with a heavy necron theme. Unfortunately, there were two issues that sent her off to the “farm upstate”
1. She competed on theme with Hopper & Lucas - which is a more fun artifact deck.
2. She did really fun things with discard and sacrifice abilities, but it was hard to build up an interactive board when you we playing with trinkets.
I do think there is a very strong deck there, I just don’t see me reaching for her all that often.
The other big retirement this time around is “Sliverless” Overlord. I really liked having a 5-color deck, and the creature type matters theme was unique. But the game play loops were very controlling and inevitable. No one really like playing against it - no matter how clever it was.
What are my favorite new card?
After being pretty down on sets for about a year, there are a ton of new (and or new to me cards) that I’m really excited about.
Firemane Commando is an immediate slam dunk for me. She’s adding a really nice, evasive source of card advantage that fits directly into decks like Kelsien and Inquisitor Greyfax.
Meeting of Minds is a sleeper uncommon. If you read a post below, you’ll see I’m very high on cheap card draw. A potentially free, instant-speed draw 2 fits in a ton of decks.
Defabricate is a nice utility piece. I think you’ll be surprised how many times you’ll want this effect to blank something terrible your opponent is about to do.
Halo Forager is probably the best uncommon in years.
Suspend was a sleeper card from Modern Horizons 2. I think in most games, this is equal to, if not better than Path to Exile.
Ancient Runes is excellent, old-school anti treasure tech.
What cards do I really want to find a home for?
I’m doing a pretty good job getting the cards I want to play into decks right now, but there are always a handful that get cut for slots, or that just don’t have a home right now:
Phantom Steed
Null Brooch
Sword of Hearth and Home
Jabari’s Influence
Eldrazi Displacer
Vhati il-dal
What have I learned about myself or the format recently?
First off, I’m starting to dial in my deckbuilding to create games that I think are fun. I currently only have one deck that contains a Propaganda or a Rhystic Study. I really want to be pushing the game forward. I don’t like going all out aggression and leaving myself open, but I don’t mind being the problem at the table. I’m not only trying to out-value the table.
Next, I’m pretty down on ramp in most decks - especially signets and talismans. There are some decks that want it, but I don’t think it should be default to put 10 ramp sources in every deck. Instead, I want a TON of fast card draw.
Similarly, I think people have forgotten how important Wraths are in the game. We’ll discuss more of that later.

Now that the Prerlease for M.O.M has come and gone and the story has been fully posted online I can finally ask this question that has been on my mind for so long! Which Legendary creature would your ocs team up with, hypothetically or otherwise, in defense of the multiverse. And if you feel like it what would their card be like?
Technically, Liya missed the Phyrexian invasion, being stuck on a different plane. But hypothetically, and if I’m allowed to break my own rules, I think she’d pair well with Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit. For the card, I could see it as the usual Bolster effect, but with a buff to defense, and Defender added. Liya’s style is more defensive than what I imagine of the more modern Abzan.
Yri, being on Ravnica and already attached to the guild, would be pairing with Lazav, the Multifarious. She’d be running distraction tactics while the guild master did his work. Card-wise, I could see the Surveil changed into a regular card draw. She’s not that combat-focused.
Vasil is interesting. Canonically (insofar as fanfic is canon) he defied New Phyrexia to take on the Knights on Melenas. But allowing for the hypothetical, I could see him being forced by the oil to team up with Geth, Thane of Contracts, against his free will. He’s had a taste of mental domination, and isn’t as comfortable with it as he might have been. The card would change the static -1/-1 to Infect.
Caidi is also interesting, but for being a non-combatant. For the fun of it, I’d put them with The Mimeoplasm. It would be an almost Majiin Buu-esque absorption to gain power. Throw Evolve on the card, and lower the P/T.
Kolya is unsurprisingly easy. He’s already in with the Azorius, and didn’t agree with Dovin Baan. As soon as word starts getting out, he’s teaming up with Lavinia of the Tenth, despite operating in different districts. Easiest way I can think to represent Kolya’s precognition is to give the card First Strike, which works well with Lavinia’s detaining and protection from red.
The Coterie is also an interesting case, given they’re already teaming up, and are on a homemade plane during the set. But I could see them teaming well with Jaxis, the Troublemaker. Someone to take the fight to the ground while they use their combined magic to control the crowd.
Definitely giving the imagery of some interesting fights! Thanks for the ask!

Recycle Reduce Reuse
Long time no update! Still playing regularly but wanted to dive in to a little bit of my deck building journey for a change of pace
Tumblr media
Recently I decided to finally retire some old EDH decks.   I’ve converted decks to something new before but kept the pieces intact so the deck itself still existed. So this is the first time officially retiring one and selling/trading the leftovers Among them was Muldrotha. She was the 2nd commander deck I ever made back in 2018. During construction I was very much blinded by the value she presented being able to replay permanents from the graveyard. When I finally got around to playing it this year it absolutely delivered on that promise of value BUT it was not all that fun to play.  Filling my graveyard with answers to everything was great! However, back then I NOT building with a wincon in mind. That mean most games felt like I was constantly fishing for answers in the graveyard to shut down other players while doing little to advance my own.
Tumblr media
So after admitting it wasn’t working it out it was time to break it down to sell it for parts and possibly use the base cards for a new Commander. Some buds gave me some good options to consider. Like Sidisi or Meren.
Tumblr media
Sidisi was another prominent Sultai commander but it didn’t excite me in the same way Muldrotha did. Meren on the other hand was a deck I’d considered building for awhile. I had the Precon. I had a lot of her core cards already. I liked her artistocrats gameplan. However, I had a reanimator deck with Chainer that had a bit of overlap with her already. Especially with Wincons.
Tumblr media
At this time it also happened to be building a Goro-Goro and Satoru deck. This meant that a lot of splashy creatures from my old Satoru deck free agents now. So I went my bud Preston’s suggestion that was the perfect home for the leftovers from both!
Tumblr media
The Mimeoplasm! It can dump all my favorite nasty creatures from Satoru into the graveyard. Then mix and match to make even bigger threats while retaining what I loved about Muldrotha. Heck I might even throw Muldrotha into the 99 once in awhile too. Overall the deck feels way more focused and fun in playtesting. I look forward to playing it in person soon!
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading my little post about my deck building journey! I’d love to hear about some of yours! Let me know in the comments if you want about decks you’ve retired and turned into something else!
