The Time of the Daleks
Tumblr media
One of the slightly more interesting stories in the Dalek Empire subseries. Them quoting Shakespeare was slightly delightful, even if that subplot was mostly useless. The Margaret Thatcher-type character was slightly too evil to believe. Charley comes up a few good ideas here mostly accidentally. The Doctor shows some brilliance dealing with mirrors for time travel ala The Girl in the Fireplace.

Eight: What did they teach you at school? Did you never study Hamlet?
Charley: What, small villages?
Eight: Plays! Shakespeare! You know, Shakespeare? Elizabethan playwright, quite popular in his day?
Charley: Oh, Doctor, you can’t expect me to know all about the obscure people–
Eight: Obscure!
Charley: –you come across in your travels–
Eight: Excuse me!
Charley: –I mean, if you’d quoted from Johnson or Marlow–
Eight: What?!
Charley: –Or a decent playwright of the time that people have actually heard of –

The Time of the Daleks
[Image: watercolor painting, mostly in blue tones. A lot of mirrors and clocks of various shapes and sizes, floating in a blue starry space. A Dalek in a library, Eight, some explosions, another Dalek and a woman running away with some books can be seen in some of the mirrors. Some of the woman’s books have also fallen into space, pages open. The Eighth Doctor and Charley Pollard, holding hands, closely followed by a Dalek, have leaped out of a mirror and are trying to jump into a different mirror.]

The noise I made in front of a busload of tourists when the eighth Doctor made that terrible "tsunami or not tsunami' joke in The Time of the Daleks was so very far and different from the pained noise when Leahman (?) started quoting Richard II.

i listen to big finish on spotify and i have to download it to my main list of songs so that i can listen to it offline, but that often means when im listening to music on shuffle i end up getting a load of big finish and hearing out of context lines. for example, just now i went from lily allen’s ‘smile’ to ‘THE DALEKS VENERATE SHAKESPEARE. HE IS THE GREATEST PLAYWRIGHT IN THE UNIVERSE’

The Time of the Daleks
yaay. daleks.
ahh i love the dalek ship noise so much
“tsunami or not tsunami, that is the question” no
they’ve all forgotten shakespeare, oh no, how sad
why are daleks reciting shakespeare
“we are the masters of time” uhhuh sure
“lay on, mcdalek” this pun makes up for this entire audio
“i could murder a cheese and pickle sandwich” judging you so hard rn
this is almost very very good but. is failing
“you’re quite, quite mad, aren’t you” I LOVE CHARLEY SO MUCH
eight seems very concerned about the web of time for someone who threatened the web of time in his first audio
i swear this one is longer than the other audios
!!!!!!!!1 I KNEW IT!!! I KNEW I HEARD A DALEK SAYING ‘EMERGENCY’ IN SEASONS OF FEAR
woahhh that’s intense
on second listen it sounds more like they said ‘push it in the dip’ which. makes more sense. but saddens me greatly.
theY INVADED GALLIFREY WHAT
shakespeare!dalek wtf did i miss something
“L E T  U S  T E L L  S A D  S T O R I E S  O F  T H E  D E A T H  O F  H I S T O R Y” why this
“alas, poor daleks”
so charley is the centre of all the fucked up timeywimeyness
oh dear

Listening to The Time of the Daleks and Eigth just called this guy McCrimmon...several centuries later and it’s still the name he thinks of when in trouble...*sobs*

Lead on, MacDalek!
Eighth Doctor, The Time of the Daleks; aka the most weirdly British sentence THAT HAS EVER BEEN UTTERED. (Seriously tho, I can’t even listen to the Daleks spouting Shakespeare without dissolving into giggles repeatedly.)

We have seen some shit in these audio dramas - sentient houses that eat people, derelict space ships on planets with no suns, American cults, mobsters, mind control, aliens who need blood sacrifices, Charley with a sword - and I know that we're really only just getting started.
But hearing Charley say she's never heard of Shakespeare just made me more anxious than any of the previous episodes have, holy shiiiiiiit. It is so unsettling to listen to her speak so firmly about him not existing.
