Round 1; A bouquet of poppy, zygopetalum, echeveria, dandelion, yucca, twinspur , lotus, tagetes, ursinia, purple hyacinth and hibiscus Vs A bouquet of amaryllis, dicentra, red spider lily and white roses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you know who they are, or are pretty sure of it, please don't tell until this poll has ended!
First, let's talk about the bouquet of poppy, zygopetalum, echeveria, dandelion, yucca, twinspur , lotus, tagetes, ursinia, purple hyacinth and hibiscus
Meaning and why these flowers were chosen: Poppy, for fertility, remembrance, strength, hope, resilience, sleep, and peace. When we meet her, she is stumbling through the wake of her trauma--including grief for both herself and her dead child— without any real goal of recovery, trying to cope through substance abuse, but over a long hard walk she gradually uncovers her inner strength Zygopetalum, for fertility and spiritual connection between people. Fertility is relevant because her pregnancy as a young teen overturned her life; spiritual connection, meanwhile, doesn’t apply in a soulmates way like would be typical for this flower, but instead as a moment of profound enlightenment that she experiences and later relates to someone who very nearly understands. Echeveria, for endurance. She’s been through a whole lot, curled up in a ball, got back up and kept going. Also because it’s one of a few plants called hens-and-chicks, and she was a mother. Dandelion, for determination, joy, and youthful thoughts. She’s just a teenager with big dreams, a love of stories, a history of tomfoolery, and a not irreparably broken soul. Yucca, for new opportunities, loyalty, and purity. She has to leave home to find hope; she is a good friend, or at least she’s trying very hard; and she’s certainly not ‘pure’ by her conservative quasi-Christian mother and culture’s standards, but whose fault is that and what does that mean anyway? Twinspur, for fidelity and friendship. She reconnects with an old friend and tries to accept who they are, their journey, and what they’ve done despite the rift in her since she last knew them; she also ends up befriending/befriended by someone she justly punched in the face before, so there’s that. I also chose this flower by its name because she’s a twin; that’s also complicated. Lotus, for spiritual growth and transcendence. She went looking for it, with her friend who was far more interested in it than she was at first, and she certainly found it even the transcendence suffered for it. Tagetes, for faith (and use in religious contexts), creativity, jealousy, and loss. Religious faith is very important to people in her life and was formative, in an abusive manner, to her in the childhood she’s only partly left; her mother clung to fundamentalist religion in a time that had seen a lot of change, and because of this shamed her all the more for her perceived transgressions against polite society. (After experiencing that, she wound up trying to combat religion-backed colonialism and generally being unwilling to let others be hurt with religion as the weapon like it was for her.) Creativity is a central part of her mind—she pranks, she explores, she lets herself become enveloped in possibly silly ideas and fascinations. Jealousy is something she has for those with more privilege getting into situations not unlike hers and getting away with it, and for those without her knack for getting into trouble (and thus getting, in this case, unjustly punished); in other words the jealousy is for her siblings. The loss part is probably clear by now—loss of her child, loss of faith of varying kinds, loss of social acceptance. Ursinia, for temptation and innocent love; she fell for a man not the least bit worth it. Purple hyacinth, for playfulness and regret; connected in this case since her playful, adventurous nature was a part of what she was shamed for, loosely speaking, when her pregnancy came to light and with the aftermath. In other words, she was too much to be considered a good girl to begin with. Hibiscus, for youth, first love (little good though it did her), and the shortness of life; she was a child giving birth to a child who didn’t survive.
Description: A young woman—eventually admirable, never despicable—with a bad reputation kept small, a self-sabotaging streak that can’t compete with the actual sabotage other people deal to her, and quite a lot of self-loathing her parents don’t care or know to help her process. Desperately needs to be told that what she went through wasn’t funny, actually, but doesn’t know that until it’s actually said. The daughter of a lawyer and a miserable housewife, and it shows. Wildly eccentric when she’s not forcing self-effacement; gets more philosophical as she goes, and unlearns the hatred she was taught for her supposedly sinful body. Once constructs an alter ego whose name is a crude joke, but completely accidentally on her part. Chaotic good

Now, let's talk about the bouquet of amaryllis, dicentra, red spider lily and white roses
Why these flowers were chosen: amaryliss flowers! big personality! and her dress is red. Dicentra. cause if she never tried to marry other character she wouldve lived, and with the dripping part looking like blood or water, she fell into the river. Red spider lily, Not only is it representive of death (and rebirth) anither BIG red flower also white roses because theyre extemely common wedding flowers, and she dies on her wedding. Description: She's an impulsive and vibrant woman who is constantly doing something. She's the type of person to get her entirely family kicked out of the club for being there, but sneak in anyway.

Baby Pronghorn! I was wondering why the adults were hanging out around the parking lot so much late in the day when I spotted this lil dude. Mama Pronghorns will leave their young unattended while they go forage and the babies will hide in the grass until they come back.

Not the most successful Crayfish catching expedition. We only caught two lol. It was pretty early in the day and I don't think they'd had their coffee yet either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of bugs this week. Some sort of beetle grub (not sure the species) and another Bold Jumping Spider! (I think)
Tumblr media
Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) has these beautiful orange flowers. A type of Milkweed which is also a host to Monarch Butterflies.
Tumblr media
Soapweed Yucca (Yucca glauca) are members of the Asparagaceae family (yes, asparagus) and have a symbiotic relationship with Yucca Moths (Tegeticula sp. and Parategeticula sp.). These plants are only pollinated by these species of moths. Yucca Moths will lay their eggs in the flowers of the Yucca plants and when the larvae hatch they'll eat the Yucca seeds. However, these moths know not to overburden the plants and leave pheromone cues for other female moths indicating that eggs have already been laid on a particular flower. Yucca Moths also intentionally pollinate the flowers, unlike bees which pollinate accidentally, and distribute pollen between flowers as they're laying eggs. Soapweed refers to the saponins that are found in this plant, which is a chemical compound that, well, can be used as soap. There are a lot of traditional Indigenous uses for this plant beyond soap, certain parts of the plant are edible and the leaves are fibrous and can be used in cordage for all sorts of things.
Tumblr media
Leafy Spurge Hawkmoth Caterpillar on some Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia virgata) both of these species are introduced to N. America. Leafy Spurge is considered a noxious weed in many states. The Hawkmoth though was introduced as a biocontrol for the plant though, since these caterpillars eat Leafy Spurge. Unfortunately, the introduction of the moth hasn't fully mitigated the effects of the introduced weed, so other weed management strategies still have to be employed.

Finally, some Ladybug porn and this nice Swallowtail Butterfly.

random ass mental thoughts related to mother that my weirdo brain thought up with no rhyme or reason or care for balance or what not #1(?)
Mother series 4v4 tag fighting game >>If you combo long enough, the background slowly shifts to one of the battle backgrounds from mother 2 and 3 >>mother 3's characters would have the rules be different for them with this: they gotta rhythm combo like in the source material roster: >MOTHER 1: Ninten, Lloyd, Ana, Teddy, Pippi (with a raging demon super (that akuma attack people think is funny) for the joke of it), Giegue (Giygas could be seen in some supers), Reab Yddet (with a Sky Yddet's final blow as a max meter super), Dr. Distorto (puppet archetype where he summons Duncan's Factory enemies to beat your ass), Barbot (imagining this lanky dude in a fighter is hilarious, could be kinda a joke character) >MOTHER 2: Ness, Paula, Jeff, Poo, Porky (in his Spider Mech, M3 Porky could be an alt), Frank, Belch, Mad Taxi (with Mad/Psycho Cars as alt costumes), Carbon Dog (with Diamond Dog install/transformation) >MOTHER 3: Lucas, Kumatora, Duster, Boney, Flint, Salsa, Masked Man (him or normal Claus, unsure), Fierce Pork Trooper, Lil' Miss Marshmellow, Fassad (maybe?) >MULTI-GAME: Hippie, Starman, Mook Stages: MOTHER 1: Podunk Outskirts, Magicant, Duncan's Factory, Snowman, Yucca Desert, Downtown Ellay, Live House, Mt. Itoi (Base), Mt. Itoi (Summit) MOTHER 2: Onett, Giant Step, Peaceful Rest Valley, Threed, Andonuts' Lab, Dalaam, Fourside, Stonehenge Base, Saturn Valley, Fire Spring, Cave of the Past MOTHER 3: Tazmily Village Square, Sunshine Forest, Mt. Thank yooooou!
2. How many houseplants in your room, and what kinds are they?
To preface my response to this, I do not have a green thumb. I have killed so many plants over the years. I love them! So I keep trying. Also, I don't have any plants in my bedroom. There's an aloe vera in the bathroom, and then in the living room we have a cactus, a ZZ plant, a yucca, some kind if palm, a spider plant, and a philodendron. So 7 total. And they are all Doing Okay!
10. Something you’ve created in the last year that you’re proud of (a playlist, a piece of art, some writing, a craft hobby, a social media account, etc)
Marigold, and the buzz. 😊
29. A favourite easy recipe: 5 ingredients or less, or takes less than 30 min to make
We call this goulash, but that is being generous. It is heckin' good though, and a staple meal at our house. (Kids love it too!)
1. dice half a medium onion + minced garlic to taste 2. fry up onion, garlic, and 2lbs of ground beef; drain when cooked 3. cook 2 cups (dry) macaroni 4. add cooked macaroni to meat 5. add 2 cans condensed tomato soup to meat and noodles 6. stir together, then eat! great with a slice of buttered bread

Houseplant roundup - all the houseplants that I've picked up for free either in the alley next to the dumpsters or in the green waste dumpsters over the past 4 years. (Except for any aloe shown...I bought one plant and it loves making babies so they're all over the house)
I haven't identified all of them and some of them are still recovering from trauma, neglect, disease, or infestation but they're getting better.
Snake plant. This one had a few droopy leaves and just needed water.
Tumblr media
Philodendron. This one had one leaf left. Just required potting up with new soil and water. The second smaller one just popped up later so maybe this was multi-plant arrangement once?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dieffenbachia (with very tiny leaves) that needed potting up and watering. I'm thinking it might need something else, maybe dividing or root care because it's been a few years and still just puts out tiny leaves. Also a ponytail palm I just picked up today that looks fine, just gave it a bit of water. And above is a purple heart that I actually made from cuttings from the original plant that I currently have outdoors in a pot (overwinters inside). I'm going to pot it up and move it to a hanging basket upstairs to get more light. They get super dark purple in high light unlike this one. Not pictured is the haworthia in the white pot also up top that I didn't realize didn't make it into the pic.
Tumblr media
Nice big jade plant in the back - just needed potting up and water. A flowering vine that I've seen on sale at home depot as a tropical annual and I've noted the name but it doesn't stick. It's like a mandevilla but smaller scale. Got this one in the fall when someone tossed it. It was afflicted badly by spider mites over the winter but has since recovered and exploded with growth. I need to pot this one up again and give it something taller to climb. And hanging we have a big healthy pothos plus two rooted cuttings that I had pruned off for being yellow when I first got the neglected, actively dying plant, but as it was pothos, stuck them in water because why not. I'll probably take some deliberate cuttings soon now that the plant has recovered and quadrupled in size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this one is a majesty palm? It's the huge ones commonly sold in stores anyway. All it's fronds were brown and crispy when I got it but it still had two green leaf spikes in the center, so I did the standard pot up and water and it's gorgeous and huge and happy now. I kept it outside last summer but it's pot is just too heavy to keep dragging it up and down the stairs for seasonal rotation.
Fiddle head fig had brown swathes on nearly all it's leaves so I pruned them off, potted it up, and kept it outside until it got too cold. By that time it had new healthy leaves and had recovered from whatever disease or deficiency it was suffering from. I don't know the next one but it has a light purple stripe along the leaf. I thought it was dead for 6 months after the last live leaf fell, but I was too lazy to dump the pot over the winter and it got new growth this spring so I'm glad I didn't! I'll probably add a different plant in the pot with it to provide an 'understory' since it's like a tall, thin sparkler. And then we have a type of yucca palm. It used to sit on that radiator but got too tall and completely blocked the window. It's less happy now so it's getting moved to replace that one philodendron as that's a south-facing window. I've had this one the longest and I honestly don't remember what shape it was in originally.
Tumblr media
Monstera with one large leaf. Was severely pot bound. Now that it's adjusted, I may pull it out, mess with the roots some more, and pot it up again. I just need more potting soil atm. The aluminum foil is to keep one of the cats from peeing in it until it gets a little more soil coverage. Little unidentified palm in front that was mostly dead in a gallon size pot. Downsized to this smaller pot after I pulled all the dead bits out. I think it had maybe 3 stems remaining so it has recovered nicely. I keep forgetting what the plant hiding behind the monstera's stake is, but it just needed it's dead bottom leaves removed and water. Then two philodendrons. I think. The pale green one is still giving me fits. I have had issues keeping leaves on the main stem, the growth at the base is relatively new. The pale color seems to be part of the variety and it gets leaf scorch ridiculously easily yet yearns for sun. I keep moving it around the house trying to find it's happy place, but it's a work in progress. I think the second dark green plant just needs more sun so it's getting moved upstairs once I clear a spot.
Random succulent (cat planter) that came from one of those multi-variety planters in which all the other varieties were dead from dehydration.
Tumblr media
And another random succulent that has done spectacularly. Some of it's leaf spikes are THREE FEET long. They're mostly round in cross-section (unlike aloe). I kinda want to repot it and move it to give it more room, but it's doing so well where it is.
Tumblr media
And that's it except for roughly 20 aloe plants of various sizes. My home is greening up nicely and all it's costing me is some TLC and potting soil.

whenever i get too depressed i go outside and look at bugs and at all the critters in the bucket pond
today i saw: a stink bug with a very attractive design on its back; possibly a katydid nymph at a higher instar than im used to seeing; the very pretty little spider ive been checking on for days that lives in my yucca; a black flying thing that looked rather like a wasp coming to drink from the moss growing out of the bucket pond; paper wasps; a variety of bees that im not rly able to ID; a grass skipper (moth); tiny little hover flies; a very shy little spider where i could only make out legs in its deep cocoon web; aphids on the sage; and in the bucket pond, many many mobile dots i could never ID in a million years; many pond snails; the hydra; and a copepod of some kind. i love seeing the copepods, the way they move is so charming

Deep Dive - Into the Desert
Come, join Crispy in the desert air for a Deep Dive that will quench your thirst!
A desert can be an unforgiving place, full of beauty and danger. The barren landscape can appear lifeless, a lack of rainfall reducing its shifting sands into the most hostile conditions for animal and plant life to survive.
But you would be wrong in this assumption.
Every inch of sand – from the Atacama on the Pacific coast to the vast, Gobi Desert in the east, is full of life – you just need to know where to look for it. Geckos, toads, meerkats camels, snakes, and spiders, to name but a few, all thrive in these inhospitable lands.
Temperatures can rise to a blistering 50 degrees Celsius in the African Sahara to a freezing zero in northern Chile. And if you’re planning on spending any length of time in a desert, thick-walled shelters with small windows are the order of the day, as is the wearing of white; your body covered fully to protect you both day and night. The colour green is a virtual constant for desert plant life, with Yuccas, Agaves, Cacti, Prickly Pears, and Joshua trees adapting with ease to the harsh conditions.
This Deep Dive will take us into the heart of the desert, so hop on a camel, fill your water bottle with cold, refreshing H2O and come along with Crispy for the ride.
Artists include Jim Morrison, David Bowie, Kings of Leon, Yawning Man and The Orb.
